The Blood Window Showcase will scare Cannes once again. This time, with six new features, currently in progress.
During an exclusive screening on May 19, in Palais K, industry guests will get to see “The Tree House,” “1978,” “Fifteen,” “Eyes of the Abyss,” “Parvulos” and “Remanence: A Voltage Cosmic Tale.”
“One of the highlights this year is the quality of projects and their diversity,” said the head of the program Javier. C. Fernández.
“We have a coming-of-age story among zombie apocalypse in ‘Parvulos,’ a vengeful quinceañera with plenty of gore and dark humor in ‘Fifteen’ or even a horror tale set on a ship during the Falklands War in 1982 [‘Eyes of the Abyss’]. This is different from previous editions, focusing more on stories about exorcisms and urban legends. Now, there are offerings for every taste.”

Following his 2017 film, What The Waters Left Behind, director Nicolás Onetti crafts a further tale of the cannibalistic family living within the flooded town of Epecuén. The focus is on an Anglo-American rock band on the last stop of their unlucky tour, where the members’ frustrations are spilling out into explosive arguments. Approaching them after the performance is the mysterious Carla (Magui Bravi), whose offer of a place to stay leads the band into a hellish scenario.
Adapting Camilo Zaffora’s screenplay, the influences of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Hostel are felt in this tale of a rock band thrust into an unimaginable nightmare. It’s a shame the focus is on such a tiresome group whose...

Cleopatra Entertainment has announced that they will be giving director Nicolás Onetti’s horror film What the Waters Left Behind: Scars a VOD, Blu-ray, and DVD release in North America on July 18th! This film is a sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre-esque horror film What the Waters Left Behind, which Nicolás Onetti and his brother Luciano made in the devastated city of Epecuén in Argentina a few years ago.
As the synopsis for What the Waters Left Behind explained, “Epecuén was one of the most important touristic villages of Argentina. Thousands of people concurred, attracted by the healing properties of its thermal waters. On November 10th, 1985, a huge volume of water broke the protecting embankment and the village was submerged under ten meters of salt water. Epecuén disappeared. Thirty years later, the waters receded and the ruins of Epecuén emerged, exposing a bleak and deserted landscape. The residents never returned.

New Zealand-based Black Mandala Films is handling world sales on “Mother Superior,” a gothic horror fairy tale linked to World War II and the Nazi experiments on the purity of the lineage.

Time (absence), utopia – dystopia, ideology, folklore and faith are recurring themes in her films, as well as in his artistic installations. One of the things that I had come to learn last year was that Argentine actress Clara Kovacic was well regarded as one of the country's scream queens. I had come to realize that I had seen her briefly in films like Abrakadabra back in 2018 and then seen her name pop up in numerous anthologies since then: A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio, Asylum: Twisted Horror and Fantasy Tales and The 100 Candles Game. It was when I was watching the Chilean horror anthology Apps when I didn't so much say out loud in my review that she was underused in the wrap around segment, Freak Date, but I was sure thinking it. With a co-starring role in frequent collaborator Nicolas Onetti's...

I'm already queasy after watching this first trailer for the upcoming horror slasher movie What the Waters Left Behind: Scars, the sequel to Nicolas Onetti's first flick. I seem like I say it quite regularly but I do really enjoy horror anthologies. There are obviously plenty of poor ones out there but generally if the runtime of each segment is kept short, then there’s always a good short or two in each anthology. And if you’re not enjoying one, then it’s never much of a wait until that one is over and another new story will start.
The wrap-around segment of The Red Book Ritual shows three friends playing the red book ‘game’. Kind of like a Ouija board but what they don’t know is that in the...

Where to start with The 100 Candles Game? How about the fact this is actually yet another one of those direct to DVD anthologies made up of numerous unconnected shorts which are contained within a wraparound story filmed specifically for this release – think Zombieworld, Galaxy of Horrors, Battle in Space or A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio. And its the latter anthology that is most connected to 100 Candles, as both films come from producer Nicolás Onetti; with A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio‘s writer Guillermo Lockhart also directing here – namely the wraparound segment of the film.

Ventana Sur’s Blood Window, one of Latin America’s most important platforms for up-and-coming horror, science fiction and fantasy filmmaking, is headed to Cannes’ Marché du Film with seven works in progress and a new market screening premiere for buyers and film festival programmers.
Although Blood Window’s beginnings are steeped in blood and gore, the festival has diversified its offerings across recent editions, embracing films of fantasy and science fiction with increasingly political storylines and constantly bigger budgets. That’s not to say there isn’t plenty of slashing to be had in this year’s lineup with classic cabin in the woods fare like “The Shape of the Woods,” zombie slasher flick “Dead Alive” and ghost stories “Don’t Come Back Alive” and “Huesera,” but two of this year’s crop are full-on sci-fi titles: “The Last Boy on Earth” and “Alien Island,” the former set in...

These eight horror shorts, chosen and directed by men, offer lots of forgettable nastiness … and one killer mermaid
Here’s a male-only horror anthology: a collection of eight shorts fresh off the festival circuit, none of which is directed by a woman. The films are a mixed bag of tricks and (significantly fewer) treats. If there is a common thread linking them it’s that most are stories of women being tortured or terrified – trembling in the male gaze. They have been chosen by film-making brothers Luciano and Nicolás Onetti, who also shot the framing story: a late-night radio DJ with a mellow stoner vibe spins spooky yarns to his listeners.

*full disclosure: this reviewer has promoted this film through online marketing, previously. Directors/writers: Luciano Onetti, Nicolás Onetti. Cast: German Baudino, Paula Brasca, Mirta Busnelli, Victorio D'Alessandro and Victoria Maurette. What the Waters Left Behind is a slasher film, from the Onetti brothers. Known as Los Olvidados (The Forgotten) in Argentina, this title lifts the story of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) for a South American audience. Though, horror fans in North America will be able to see What the Waters Left Behind, on Amazon Prime, this month (Oct. 26th). This release is full of horror tropes. From a freaky gas station to a cannibal family, you have likely seen this film before. Still, the Onetti brothers have chosen a few interesting locations, including an entire destroyed city. And, the filmmakers admit that they have been influenced by American cinema, including Hooper's earlier effort. What the Waters Left Behind is.

Black Mandala presenta... A full trailer has debuted for an intriguing horror film titled Abrakadabra, the latest film by the Onetti Brothers (Luciano & Nicolás) who previously made What the Waters Left Behind and El Pulpo Negro. The brothers have been making their own version of the "Giallo" trilogy, starting with Sonno Profondo in 2013 and Francesca in 2015, and this is the final film in that trilogy. And they definitely go all out with that wacky, weird, twisted Giallo feel complete with the film stock grain and blood-splattered faces. The story follows a prestigious magician who presents a show, after which a series of murders occur, with the magician being framed. Starring Germán Baudino, María Eugenia Rigón, Clara Kovacic, Ivi Brickell, Gustavo D'Alessandro, Raúl Gederlini, and Pablo Vilela. This looks bloody and mad crazy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Luciano & Nicolás Onetti's Abrakadabra, from YouTube: Dante, "The Great", a prestigious magician,...

Written by Larry Cohen (The Stuff) and directed by William Lustig (Maniac), Part 2 of the series is my personal favorite entry in the series.
