Producer Mark Burnett expected a hit when he sent 16 contestants and a then-unknown 38-year-old host named Jeff Probst to the Borneo island of Malaysia for an adaptation of the Swedish competition show Expedition Robinson. What he got instead was a cultural phenomenon. Survivor instantly became a ratings juggernaut, and viewership for the first season finale reached north of 50 million. Reality TV existed before Survivor, but the show’s low overhead and potential for mass appeal single-handedly ushered in the reality-competition boom.
In the 24 years since it hit airwaves, Survivor has morphed from a “social experiment” into television’s most complex and grueling competition, with players practically raised on the show elevating it to new heights of strategy. Its motto—“Outwit. Outplay. Outlast.”—speaks to the complex permutations of physical strength, mental acumen, and social skills that can produce winners as diverse as season 30’s Mike Holloway, who got himself to...

So far, The Challenge: USA winners have been “Survivor strong,” between the first two seasons. In Season 1, it was Danny McCray and Sarah Lacina who were the only ones to finish the final. And now, in Season 2, Chris Underwood and Desi Williams each took home $250,000. “We’re just trying to keep the train rolling,” Underwood says. It was a two-day final, the first of which consisted of trials that tested the players’ Strength, Smarts, Skills, and Steel Stomachs. The second was a 10-mile race, with a few challenges along the way. In the end, Underwood reached the flag first and Williams third (and first of the women). Below, Underwood and Williams take us inside that final. Desi, you were right about encore performances (her partner quit during the first leg of the USA Season 1 final), and Chris, you beat the people who targeted you. Now that you’ve had time to process,...

Outwit, outplay, outlast. The basic formula for competing on “Survivor” hasn’t changed since the reality series made its debut on May 31, 2000. Contestants continue to be divided into tribes and forced to form a new society as they adapt to their physical and social surroundings. Players still have to compete in challenges, build their social game and face the elements and hear host Jeff Probst yell his signature phrases like “You gotta dig deep!” and “Wanna know what you’re playing for?” — and they still have to look into his eyes while he utters the dreaded phrase “The tribe has spoken.”
While the essential gameplay of “Survivor” hasn’t changed throughout 44 seasons played over 23 years, the game certainly has evolved. A myriad of new twists and advantages, the 39-day format shortened to 26 days, and the evolution of the contestants themselves have led to the long-running series having...

After 44 seasons and 23 years on the air, “Survivor” is finally updating its sit-out rule.
“It used to be that the sit-out would reset after a tribal council,” host Jeff Probst informed the “Survivor 45” castaways during Wednesday night’s second episode. “So here’s the new rule. You cannot sit out of back-to-back challenges, period. So whoever sits out of this challenge will run in the next challenge. Make sense?”
The rule change is a direct result of what happened in “Survivor 44,” when Claire Rafson sat out of three consecutive challenges, resulting in her tribe voting her out unanimously. The audience uproar prompted Probst to announce on his “On Fire” podcast last spring that the rule “does need to be updated.”

The Challenge: World Championship episode 5 ended with a stalemate that resulted in Ben Driebergen and Kaycee Clark seemingly getting blindsided into elimination. Ben might have unintentionally put them in the Arena by not voting for Jordan Wiseley and Kaz Crossley, as he previously told Danny McCray. However, it’s possible Ben didn’t cause the stalemate because Jodi Weatherton claimed it would have been prevented if one of her allies voted with her and Team Australia.
‘The Challenge: World Championship’ episode 5 ended in a stalemate
When Wes Bergmann and Zara Zoffany placed last in The Challenge: World Championship episode 5, the rest of the cast took the opportunity to throw in another strong team to face them in the Arena.
However, they couldn’t agree on who, resulting in a stalemate. Therefore, it gave daily winners Darrell Taylor and Kiki Morris all the power to throw any team they wanted into elimination.

The Challenge: Australia winner Kiki Morris was the fourth female global Mvp to pick a legend, and she chose four-time champ Darrell Taylor after Wes Bergmann, Jordan Wiseley, and Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio were already selected.
In a March 2023 interview with The Challenge Chronicles, the Australian reality TV star admitted she hadn’t watched the show before and didn’t know anyone’s prior accolades before heading into the season. The Challenge champ Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio told podcast Challenge Mania that CBS should include MTV veterans in The Challenge: USA Season 2, believing it needed established personalities to show the newcomers the ropes. Here are five legends from the flagship that would make exceptional additions to the upcoming season.
Johnny ‘Bananas’ Devenanzio
The winningest competitor has appeared in over 20 seasons since his debut in 2006’s The Duel, and he’s racked up 68 daily wins, 27 elimination wins, $1,222,720 earned, and a historic seven wins. Even though he’s already appeared in season 38’s Ride or Dies and spinoff World Championship after taking a two-season break, Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio has become a franchise staple, and his presence would make the show feel a little more authentic.

The Challenge: Australia champ Kiki Morris quickly proved herself by winning the first elimination of the World Championship, which allies Grant Crapp and Emily Seebohm inadvertently nominated her for by agreeing to use her as a pawn. Three-time champ Wes Bergmann won the Gates of Hell daily in The Challenge: World Championship. However, USA winner Danny McCray disputed his victory as he thought it should’ve gone to a tiebreaker; a rule the former NFL player says “didn’t exist in real-time.”
Wes Bergmann won the daily in episode 4 of ‘The Challenge: World Championship’
In episode 4 of The Challenge: World Championship, the daily challenge required the duos to race each other to the end of a corridor before a gate closed.
If a player can’t make it back in time, their team is eliminated from the game. Additionally, the challenge would include a tiebreaker where the contestants would race to the opposite gate, with the person who reaches it the fastest winning the daily for their team.

With over 43 seasons of Survivor, it’s difficult to choose which ones stand out the most. There have been numerous entertaining seasons full of impressive gameplay, dynamic casts, and shocking Tribal Councils that have left us with our jaws on the floor. But we’ve narrowed the list of all-time great seasons to five must-sees for any Survivor fan.
Jeff Probst | Photo: Robert Voets/CBS 5. ‘Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X’
Including Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X on our list of the top five Survivor seasons might be a controversial pick, but we wholeheartedly stand by it.
Adam Klein is one of the most underrated winners (aside from Vecepia Towery). After all, he is one of five castaways to win the show unanimously, and he played a smart (yet chaotic at times) strategic and social game. Plus, Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X introduced us to multiple memorable players, including Zeke Smith,...

It’s believed that The Challenge: USA champ Danny McCray picked recent winner Tori Deal as a teammate in World Championship because she’s his wife Kiki’s favorite competitor. However, Kiki seemingly threw shade at Tori in a recent tweet.
Danny McCray’s wife Kiki tweeted her thoughts after ‘The Challenge: World Championship’ episode
The Challenge: USA champ Danny McCray’s wife Kiki is nearly a cast member, as he frequently mentions her. After The Challenge: World Championship Season 1 Episode 4 aired, she defended her husband, who was frustrated with his partner Tori Deal for not wanting to make big moves.
Initially, they seemed as one of the strongest pairs but the two are clearly not on the same page when it comes to gameplay.

Survivor champ and The Challenge: USA winner Sarah Lacina called out Tony Vlachos for his real job as a police officer, eventually leading to one of the most successful alliances in franchise history, Cops-R-Us. During a recent interview, the Game Changers winner admitted production played a role in helping her discover Tony’s true identity.
Sarah Lacina reveals how producers helped her identify Tony Vlachos as a cop
Speaking to podcast Challenge Mania during a February 2023 appearance, Iowa-based investigator Sarah Lacina noticed Tony Vlachos during casting and felt he looked, dressed, and walked like a cop.
Additionally, Sarah recalled him repeatedly getting brought up in her interviews and realized producers “lit up” when she identified him as a police officer, clueing her in. When asked about using production as an edge in the game, the Iowa native noted she used her Cagayan experience with them to help her game in subsequent seasons.

After two decades and 43 seasons, who are the 19 “Survivor” castaways with the most days played on the island? Obviously, frequent returnees “Queen” Sandra Diaz-Twine, “Boston” Rob Mariano and Parvati Shallow all make the list, but some of the other record-holders may surprise you. Note that the last season to feature former contestants back to compete again was “Winners at War” (Season 40), which reintroduced 20 of the most memorable champions of all time. The castaways of “Survivor 43” have positioned themselves to set a new record next week — all they need to do is vote out a fifth woman in a row. So far the cast has only eliminated females: Morriah Young, Justine Brennan, Nneka Ejere and Lindsay Carmine were the first four players voted out, matching a franchise record. If they continue on this path and vote another woman out next week, they will go down in infamy as the record holders for longest succession of female eliminations to start a season. Yikes!
Luckily, as it stands in Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, the cast is not headed toward setting such a disastrous record. Instead, Geo Bustamante leads our current predictions to be eliminated in Episode 5 at 19/25. Teck Holmes, a former Real World star and two-time competitor on The Challenge: All Stars, continues to speak about being misled by the reality TV competition show’s production regarding the prize money involved.
The 46-year-old reality TV star recently offered a message to The Challenge: USA star Danny McCray, partly offering him congratulations on his successful season.
Danny was one of the 2022 CBS spinoff show’s two winners, with fellow Survivor star Sarah Lacina the other winner in a grueling final held in Patagonia.
Teck, an Og cast member from The Real World: Hawaii, appeared in the first two seasons of Paramount Plus’ The Challenge: All Stars, reaching the final in the second season but failing to win.

After more than half of “The Challenge: USA” competitors quit during the season finale, cast members began complaining about inconsistencies in the rules.
Tyson Apostol, who dominated all season long, ultimately ended up dropping after he couldn’t finish a Sudoku puzzle. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said that while Sarah Lacina was able to time out of the first puzzle, production didn’t allow him to time out.
“I don’t know if she timed out of Sudoku, nobody was there to see her do it and they didn’t show her doing it on camera,” he said. Lacina, along with Danny McCray, went on to win the season — and were the only two who actually finished the Sodoku and scaled the mountain.
He also claimed that one producer on set told him the rules were in his head, but not written anywhere. His ally through the entire season,...

The Challenge: USA final is officially in the books, as 10 finalists battled it out in Patagonia to determine who would win the spinoff season.
After grinding through various checkpoints featuring puzzles, laborious tasks, and challenging weather conditions, Survivor stars Danny McCray and Sarah Lacina emerged as winners.
The pair were the only competitors to make it through every checkpoint in the final, while others ended up disqualified or quitting ahead of the finish line.
With the victory, Danny and Sarah won their share of 500,000 in prize money and qualified for the world championship tournament, set to arrive on Paramount Plus.
The format of that international tournament remains unclear, although it’s known it will feature other winners from spinoffs The Challenge: Australia, The Challenge: Argentina, and The Challenge: UK.

Devin Walker is giving his thoughts about The Challenge: USA final. Pic credit: MTV
Devin Walker has called out several of The Challenge: USA stars after watching how things went for the cast members competing in the CBS spinoff show’s final.
The show recently aired its two-hour grand finale on CBS and featured a final that some fans might consider comparable to the MTV show’s finals.
However, CBS’ version featured a variety of circumstances that happened before and during the final that viewers and spinoff cast members have criticized.
Several things caused issues for the competitors, putting them at a disadvantage or costing them a chance to continue competing. In addition, post-season exit interview comments from some finalists have indicated production wasn’t correctly explaining rules along the way.
That said, Devin isn’t listening to any excuses, as he even called out one of the finalists by name,...

Sarah Lacina appears in The Challenge: USA promotional video. Pic credit: CBS
With The Challenge: USA, viewers saw some minor feuds, grudges, and rivalries emerge during the show, but the one that took center stage involved Sarah Lacina and Angela Rummans.
Angela, a former Big Brother houseguest, proved to be a strong competitor from the start, winning early enough to establish some strong allies in the game.
Meanwhile, Sarah was part of the strong Survivor alliance immediately, which kept her protected from eliminations throughout most of the season.
However, it took her a while to eventually prove herself and qualify for Tj Lavin’s final. By then, it was clear that her primary target ahead of that final had become Angela.
Both women would make it to the final after winning eliminations to survive in the game. However, only one woman could win out of the five women that reached the final.

In The Challenge: USA finale, viewers saw ten competitors learn that they’d officially qualified for Tj Lavin’s final, including six Survivor stars.
Ben Driebergen was amongst those Survivors as he played a strong season, kept himself tight with his allies, and stayed out of the eliminations at The Arena.
However, Ben got some unfortunate news when he and his castmates arrived at the final’s starting site in Patagonia.
Tj revealed that after Ben suffered an injury during the last daily challenge of the season, the medical team decided that it wasn’t best for him to continue competing.
That meant Ben was eliminated from the final before it started, and based on his details in post-show interviews, it was the right decision.

Survivor star Desi Williams spoke about her appearance in The Challenge: USA final. Pic credit: MTV’s The Challenge/YouTube
The Challenge: USA final recently concluded, with two winners crowned as champions for the spinoff season. They were the only two competitors out of 10 to complete Tj Lavin’s final in Patagonia.
However, one competitor could not complete the final due to a situation she didn’t have much control over. It all came down to a strict rule: if your teammate quit, you were also out of the final.
The final consisted of checkpoints, and it was one man paired with one woman randomly for each one. Survivor star Desi Williams had the misfortune of The Algorithm randomly pairing her with Big Brother’s Enzo Palumbo for the first leg.
Enzo revealed in previous daily challenges that he’s not a fan of swimming, which came into play in...
