Buccaneer Media, the production company behind hit Anna Friel series “Marcella” and Irvine Walsh adaptation “Crime,” has super-charged its management team with two new senior hires: Moreyba Bidessie joins as executive producer and Jo Evans (right) as head of production.
Both Bidessie and Evans will report to Buccaneer’s joint chief executives Richard Tulk-Hart and Tony Wood at the company’s London headquarters. Bidessie will work closely with Wood and executive producer Anna Burns on the company’s scripted development slate while Evans will oversee all Buccaneer’s production activity.
“Jo and Moreyba are joining Buccaneer at a very exciting time for the company,” said Tulk-Hart. “We have produced two big dramas during a very difficult year for everyone and have a number of shows set up around the world for next year and beyond, further fuelling our growth. ABC is putting the town of Southold in its rearview mirror, having cancelled the sci-fi drama Emergence after one season.
During its 13-episode run — which never aired more than four episodes in a row — Emergence averaged not quite a 0.5 demo rating and 2.7 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day numbers), well shy of what The Rookie did in the time slot (0.7/4.2 mil) last season. Out of the 10 dramas ABC has aired this TV season, it edged out only The Baker and the Beauty in the demo while ranking seventh in total audience.

If you’ve seen any of the (numerous) commercials for ABC’s Emergence, then you already know the strange event that happened in the town of Southold: “A plane crashed on a beach!”
But, as we learned in Tuesday’s premiere, it’s really what happens after the plane crash that’s even weirder.

There are fewer “Lost”-alikes nowadays than there used to be: Given how frequently hour-long puzzle-box shows seeking to draft off of the ABC smash’s success were met with utter indifference, the networks, give or take an occasional attempt like NBC’s “Manifest” moved on to attempting to copy the “This Is Us” formula. So it’s actually a bit charming to see “Emergence,” a new network show that puts forward a big supernatural-adjacent mystery expanding outward into potential conspiracy or mysticism. It’s the sort of show that they don’t much make anymore.
Here, Allison Tolman plays a small-town police chief who finds a young girl at the site of a plane accident; this young woman (Alexa Swinton) seems to have no recollection of who she is or how she got there. Tolman’s Jo Evans takes the young girl into her home but quickly finds herself...

[Editor’s Note: The following review is more of a first impression, as the only episode available for advance screening was the pilot. For new broadcast series that warrant a deeper look, check IndieWire for a more thorough analysis in the coming weeks.]
“Lost” has one of the most iconic openings in the history of television. Jack wakes up with scrapes on his face, alone in the woods, and quickly rushes to the beach where he’s surrounded by chaos. A plane has crashed, and the survivors are scrambling to stay that way, ducking cascading debris and avoiding whirring engine blades. Director J.J. Abrams’ intense sequence thrusts you into the action before you can question anything, before working backward to fill in the gaps — a pattern the show replicates through its iconic flashback structure and general time-jumping.
“Emergence” also opens with a plane crash. It also airs on ABC, focuses on a traumatized survivor, and, eventually, unveils its genre as “conspiracy thriller.” But Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters tackle their opening and pilot very differently, introducing the heroes, setting, and overall grounding elements before toying with some really weird stuff at episode’s end.

Allison Tolman wasn’t going to lie. On the set of her new ABC mystery Emergence, “I faked it,” she admitted to Michael Ausiello during a visit to TVLine’s San Diego Comic-Con video suite with her castmates and EPs.
She didn’t mean that she faked the acting part, of course — she meant the gun-wielding part of her role of Jo Evans, a police chief who takes in a young plane-crash survivor whose past is one big question mark. “When I had to do weapons training for Emergence, I was like, ‘Guys, it’s cool. I’ve done this before.
