There are few songs more quintessentially ’80s than Norwegian band A-ha’s “Take On Me.” It’s a synth-heavy power ballad accompanied by a high-concept music video, checking all the boxes that defined the pop music of the decade. When choosing the song for their cover, Brooklyn-based band Lake Street Dive ditched the…

The ripples extended far past the shores of Lake Wobegon when Garrison Keillor recorded his final episode of A Prairie Home Companion on July 1. In 2015, announcing his decision to step down, Keillor, 74, marked mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile as his successor.
Though Thile, 35, was a frequent guest on the show, he initially struck some as an odd choice. Thile rose to prominence with indie-bluegrass group Nickel Creek and has made a name for himself both with his own alt-leaning bluegrass group The Punch Brothers and as a highly-sought after collaborator for other instrumentalists like double bassist Edgar Meyer and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

The Avett Brothers stopped by The Tonight Show for a rootsy performance of new song "Satan Pulls the String." The band released their ninth album, True Sadness, last Friday.
Scott and Seth Avett passionately delivered the bluegrass track with their full band. The performance wrapped with a quick banjo, fiddle and guitar jam session at the end.
The Avett Brothers will be touring in support of their Rick Rubin-produced album this summer, with dates across North America scheduled through October. In February, they'll play several nights at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya,...

“Before Dylan... There Was Davis”
By Raymond Benson
The first Coen Brothers feature to be given the “Criterion treatment” is, oddly, their most recent release—Inside Llewyn Davis, which received (mostly) critical praise upon its release in late 2013. Kudos were especially heaped upon the film’s relatively new star, Oscar Isaac. Sadly, while the picture recouped its investment and made a little money, it wasn’t as widely embraced by audiences as it should have been. This is probably because the Coen Brothers typically don’t make movies for the masses. The auteur siblings create art that appeals mostly to intelligent, hip audiences willing to enter a strange, sometimes disturbing, always surprising, universe that is distinctly Coen-land.
Inside Llewyn Davis is presented as a comedy, but in the Coen Brothers’ oeuvre, “comedy” can mean many things. It can be wild and wacky (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski) or it can...

After Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani confirmed their romance earlier this week with a statement from her rep and public displays of affection, his ex-wife Miranda Lambert is speaking out - well, sort of. The country star, who gave a touching speech at the Country Music Awards on Wednesday night, took to Instagram on Thursday to share two photos with emotional messages. In the first snapshot, Miranda is seen cuddling up to a horse, writing, "'Horse Power' . . . I'm still floating around on a cloud from last night. Today was a day spent reflecting on this amazing life that Nashville and country music fans have given me. And my friends. I'm so grateful." In the other photo, which was a screenshot from a Lake Street Dive album, Miranda shared the lyrics, "'I could spend ages reading the news. I could spend days singing the blues. But I turn up the TV light.

One classy country star! Miranda Lambert took to Facebook on Thursday, Nov. 5, around his new relationship with Gwen Stefani. "I could spend ages reading the news, I could spend days, singing the blues," the 31-year-old singer wrote, sharing the lyrics from Lake Street Dive's song "Better Than." "But I turn up the TV light. Give up without a fight. Better than pretending to know what's wrong and what's right," she continued. "This song. This band. These lyrics,” she added, commenting on her own post. “@lakestreetdive thanks [...]...
