Sufjan Stevens’ Seven Swans and his music as a whole is beloved by hipsters who may not have paid attention in Sunday School (if they even attended it). Here’s a look at the Bible story that inspired the track “Abraham” from Seven Swans. It’s a morally complex tale that has been interpreted differently by Jews and Christians.
Sufjan Steven’s ‘Seven Swans’ references an attempted child sacrifice from the Bible
In the Book of Genesis, God blesses the prophet Abraham with a son named Isaac in his old age. Subsequently, God asks Abraham to execute Isaac. Abraham binds his own son in preparation for a human sacrifice, and an angel tells him that the Lord was merely testing his faith by asking him to sacrifice Isaac. The Lord blesses Abraham and he sacrifices a ram, rather than his son, to the divine. Christians often interpret this story as...

Sam Alito — the arch conservative Supreme Court justice — now has two flag controversies to explain, and another striking reason to doubt his impartiality in cases involving Donald Trump and the Jan. 6 defendants.
Alito has already been in the news for an upside-down American flag that flew at his primary residence during the period surrounding Jan. 6, 2021. Alito has blamed the placement of that flag — which is typically only to be flown to signify national distress, including when the government has fallen — on his wife Martha-Ann. He characterized her action as the...

Almost everyone seems to have an opinion on Jenelle Evans’ return to MTV. Last week, rumors began to swirl that Evans would appear on Teen Mom: The Next Chapter after being photographed with Briana DeJesus. MTV confirmed the rumors with a recent trailer for the series’ upcoming season. Once the news was confirmed, fans took to social media to discuss the shocking twist. Former Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham has an opinion, too. She slammed Evans for returning to the series. Evans has responded.

News that Jenelle Evans has officially been added to the Teen Mom: The Next Chapter cast shocked many, but apparently, it didn’t surprise Farrah Abraham. Abraham, who appeared on Teen Mom for several years, took to social media to discuss the addition of Evans to the cast. Her upload started off nicely enough. That didn’t last long.

Robert Kirkman, the creator behind The Walking Dead comic book series, has an unexpected favorite character within the expansive universe. While many would assume that he would choose someone like Steven Yeun’s Glenn, Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, or any other impressive character from the original survivors, Rickman’s choice diverges significantly from popular opinion.
The Walking Dead (image credit: AMC)
Despite the array of memorable heroes and villains introduced throughout the series, Kirkman’s preference surprisingly lands on Negan, one of the most brutal characters in the series.

Season 6 of The Walking Dead introduced Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the notorious Saviors’ leader Negan followed by what has been considered the most shocking and brutal moments in the whole series, Negan beating Abraham and Glenn to death in front of the survivors.

The Flats, a film about The Troubles in Northern Ireland, won the top award at Cph:dox in Copenhagen at a Friday night, earning a €10,000 prize.
The documentary directed by Alessadra Celisia takes place in “New Lodge in the center of Belfast, a neighborhood still haunted by the nearly 30-year conflict between Catholics and Protestants which officially ended in 1998.”
In their citation, the jury called the film witty, multi-layered, profound and provocative. They wrote, “Our main award recognizes not only creative and conceptual daring, but a filmmaker with the humility to realize when the story outgrows its framework, and the confidence to follow where it, and its fantastically vivid characters lead. We live in a world of divisions, borders and locked gates. There has been a resurgence of crime-investigation thrillers in Malayalam cinema. The past films, such as Cbi: Our Diary Kurippu (1988) and Anjaam Paathiraa (2020), have paved the way for some interesting stories about serial killers, following the investigation path chosen by the leads in the film. Rorschach, which was released in 2022, also provided insight on how certain revenge stories can be executed. Directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, the 2024 film tells the story of a tormented insomniac police officer who works to keep his thoughts at bay and finds himself embroiled in an interesting murder case.

Elden Ring is getting its anticipated Dlc in a few months, but Shadow of the Erdtree isn’t the only expansion that FromSoftware fans should be looking forward to in June. The Soulsborne community has been asking for more Bloodborne content since its initial PS4 exclusive release nearly a decade ago, and it seems like the requests have been heard, although not in the most conventional way.
The intriguing lore created by Hidetaka Miyazaki will continue in The Bleak Dominion, another graphic novel that further builds on the gothic world introduced by the Soulslike title in 2015.

The ever-glamorous Christie Brinkley posted a decidedly unglamorous photo on social media — an image that showed her recovering from a procedure to remove skin cancer near her left eye.
“The good news for me is we caught the basal cell Carcinoma early, she wrote on Instagram (see the post below). “And I had great Doctors that removed the cancer and stitched me up to perfection like an haute couture Dior. The good news for you is that all of this can be avoided by being diligent with your sun protection!”
The longtime model and part-time actress, who had a memorable role in the 1983 comedy Vacation, said she was there for her daughter’s routine checkup and asked a doctor at the last minute to examine “a little tiny dot I could feel as I applied my foundation.” Good idea.

[This story contains major spoilers through the first two episodes of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.]
In the earliest days of The Walking Dead, no one was safe. Not even beloved comic book characters. Just ask Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), who survives dozens of issues in Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s comics, only to die unexpectedly in the show’s second season.
But as the series wore on, it felt increasingly unlikely to lose any major players from the board, a notion that contributed to Christian Serratos requesting to be written out in the series finale. Rosita notwithstanding, the late stages of The Walking Dead were fairly easy on even the supporting cast. Gone were the days where a fan-favorite antihero like Michael Rooker’s Merle could bite the dust after so much build-up, or even moves as shocking as Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Abraham’s (Michael Cudlitz) twin executions in the season seven premiere, divisive as that story decision was.

The 2024 edition of the Berlinale continues to generate heated debate around Israel’s war in Gaza, with out-going Berlin festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian defending the Feb. 24 closing awards show speeches against mounting criticism from German politicians and media.
“This year’s festival was a place for dialogue and exchange for ten days; yet once the films stopped rolling, another form of communication has been taken over by politicians and the media, one which weaponizes and instrumentalizes antisemitism for political means,” Chatrian said in a letter posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Friday.
The artistic chief argued statements made on stage at Saturday’s closing awards gala were protected under German freedom of speech laws.
“No matter our individual political convictions or beliefs, we should all keep in mind that freedom of speech is an essential part of what defines a democracy. The award ceremony on Saturday, February 24 has been...

Outgoing Berlinale head Carlo Chatrian has distanced himself from the criticism made of the fest’s closing ceremony speeches earlier this week.
On Wednesday, Israeli filmmaker Yuval Abraham, who last week picked up the best documentary award at the Berlin Film Festival, said he received death threats and had to cancel his flight home after German officials and Israeli media described his acceptance speech as “anti-Semitic.” He said “a right-wing Israeli mob came to my family’s home yesterday to search for me, threatening close family members who fled to another town in the middle of the night.”
In a new letter today posted on X, Chatrian, who has just presided over his final Berlinale, said the awards ceremony over the weekend “has been targeted in such a violent way that some people now see their lives threatened.”
“This is unacceptable,” wrote Chatrian. You can read the full letter below.

Los Angeles’ Frieze week got off to a hot start in a fairly chill environment: a roller rink.
“I’m so glad Jimmy finally found a place to entertain in!” cracked James Corden, regarding the estate of super-producer/entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine. The former Late Late Show host played emcee to a crowd that included a rare fusion of music and art royalty: Ed Ruscha, Brian Grazer, Katie Couric, Joel Madden, Benny Blanco, Bob Geldof and sports agent Rich Paul, aka Adele’s partner.
All convened at the sprawling Bel Air manse of Iovine for an art auction, co-hosted by Dr. Dre, to raise funds for a revolutionary education program. In 2013, Iovine and Dre (born Andre Young) opened the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy, a novel university program fusing art, tech and business. In 2022, the duo went a step further, opening their own magnet high school in Leimert Park: the Iovine and Young Center.

The heated debate over the awards ceremony of this year’s Berlin Film Festival shows no signs of cooling down.

Speaking to newspapers of Germany’s Funke media group, Buschmann said the film festival “suffered serious damage” as a result and suggested there could be criminal consequences for some of the statements and slogans.

The organizers said on Sunday, the day after the festival concluded, “The Instagram channel of the Berlinale Panorama section was briefly hacked and antisemitic image-text posts about the Middle East war with the Berlinale logo were posted on the channel. These statements do not originate from the festival and do not represent the festival’s stance.”
Organizers added: “The Berlinale condemns this criminal act in the strongest possible terms and has deleted the posts and launched an investigation. In addition, the Berlinale has filed criminal charges against unknown persons. The...

The Berlinale has filed criminal charges against unknown persons who over the weekend hacked the film festival’s social media channel and posted a Gaza Ceasefire message with the festival’s logo and branding.
The festival criticized the posts as “anti-Semitic” in regards to the ongoing Israeli and Palestinian conflict in Gaza. The festival quickly deleted the posts, which appeared on Sunday, January 25, and have launched an investigation into the hacking.

Reviewing No Other Land out of Berlinale, Rory O’Connor described the “disorienting and dispiriting landscape” into which it was premiering. Quite an understatement to say the city of Berlin and its major-market festival fumbled through any response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, against which many filmmakers who’ve attended the festival in years past have spoken out. As Rory summarizes:
“The film premiered this week at the Berlinale, a festival mired in recent controversies in a country that is failing to acknowledge the limits of its own guilt. In the month leading up to the festival, several filmmakers pulled their work from the selection to protest the lack of Palestinian solidarity. Workers of the festival then released an open letter calling for the festival’s organizers to demand a ceasefire. In the weeks leading up, the city’s cultural minister, Joe Chialo, had to backtrack on a proposed ‘anti-discrimination...

The Walking Dead star Josh McDermitt made a revelation, stating that he wouldn’t have taken on the role of Eugene Porter ten years ago. The reason? He was not into horror or zombie movies.
McDermitt is known for his role as Eugene Porter on AMC’s The Walking Dead. He also acted in Showtime’s The Loudest Voice and the final season of AMC’s Mad Men.
Josh McDermitt in a still from The Walking Dead
The revelation was shocking, considering how successful his portrayal of Eugene Porter has been. Eugene Porter debuted in issue 53 of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic series.
Before the outbreak, Eugene was a high school science teacher. In the comics, he was portrayed as more cynical and less likable compared to his TV version.
Eugene showed up in Season 4, Episode 10 of The Walking Dead, Inmates with Abraham and Rosita. Over the years,...

“No Other Land” co-director Yuval Abraham announced he is receiving death threats after calling for a ceasefire in Gaza onstage during the 2024 Berlinale closing ceremony.
Abraham, who co-directed documentary “No Other Land” alongside Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, and Rachel Szor, pointed to the different experiences between himself and Adra due to their ethnicities. While Abraham is Israeli, Adra is Palestinian and living under military occupation in the West Bank; according to Abraham, despite living only a half-hour from one another, their political rights vastly vary.
“We are standing in front of you. Now, we are the same age. I am Israeli, Basel is Palestinian. And in two days, we go back to a land where we are not equal,” Abraham said onstage at Berlinale while accepting the Best Documentary Award alongside Adra. “I am under civilian law; Basel is under military law. We live 30 minutes from one another but I have voting rights.

The Berlinale has been criticised by local politicians from the Berlin house of representatives for anti-war statements made by award-winners and jury members at the closing night gala on Saturday February 24.
Joe Chialo, senator for cultural affairs, said on X [formerly Twitter]: “Culture should offer a space for diverse political opinions, but this year’s award ceremony of the Berlinale was marked by self-righteous anti-Israeli propaganda that has no place on the stages of Berlin.”
Speaking to local broadcaster Rbb, Melanie Kühnemann-Grunow, spokesperson on media policy for the Social Democrats (Spd), said, “The Berlinale has suffered damage - whether this...

A high-politicized edition of the Berlin Film Festival ended Saturday, but divisions surrounding political messaging during the festival appear to be ongoing.
Sunday afternoon, the official Berlinale shared a statement on its social media account announcing that it plans to “file criminal charges against unknown persons” who it said shared “posts about the war in the Middle East.” The posts mentioned by the festival were shared on the official Berlinale Panorama Instagram account and featured a series of infographics.
“Genocide is Genocide. We are all complicit,” the first infographic said.
Another post claimed that festival staff had decided to “shed the idea that German guilt absolves us of our country’s history or our current crimes,” and in turn, they have decided to call for an “immediate and permanent ceasefire” to violence in Gaza.
The posts ended with the message: “From our unresolved Nazi past to our genocidal present — we...

Some years ago, an uncle of mine traveled to Palestine with a group of volunteers. It was a time of fewer videophones, certainly in the region, and the organization involved had requested that they visit the West Bank and simply document what they saw. After a few days, my uncle circulated an email in which he recounted the story of a mechanic who, having refused to leave his home and business, had his tools arbitrarily confiscated by the Israeli army. The tools, the fruits of years of labour and, given their value, effectively irreplaceable, should have provided for him and his family for years to come––an entire livelihood disappeared with the flick of a pen.
Something that’s occasionally forgotten amongst the carnage and statistic of recent events is how relentless the decades of conflict have been on regular Palestinian lives: the daily humiliations enacted on anyone forced to...

Basel Adra, a young Palestinian activist, and Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist, join forces to prevent forced evictions and demolition of Palestinian homes by Israeli authorities in the trailer for No Other Land, which is having a world premiere at the Berlinale.
Adra and Abraham are also one half along with Palestinian photographer Hamdan Ballal and Israeli cinematographer Rachel Szor of an Israeli-Palestinian film collective that wrote, directed, produced and edited the feature documentary having its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.
“We have to raise our voices, not being silent as if no human beings live here,” Basel says at one point in the trailer as he looks to undue any notion Palestinians don’t exist as a nation or have a collective consciousness.
No Other Land follows Adra as he looks to oppose the threatened expulsion of Palestinians from the West Bank Masafer Yatta community.

Mpakani: Story of the North is an attempt at telling a patriotic tale where a few individuals come together and hunt for a terrorist who has threatened to wreak havoc on Kenya. The 10-episode series is a bit too lengthy for the kind of story the makers are trying to tell, and it is clear that the tautness is missing. However, there are some things to note about the show. Despite the story having significant pacing issues and the production value not up to par in some scenes, the show maintains an engaging storyline with inspirations taken from shows like Homeland. There is action, stunts, humor, and tragic deaths in this show, which neatly introduces us to the characters and then puts them together to let the drama begin.

HBO kicked off the current iteration of the premium true-crime movement with The Jinx back in 2015.
As they prepare to launch The Jinx – Part 2, Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham, EVPs of HBO Documentary and Family Programming, laid out their strategy to find films involving “crime with a conscience.”
The pair, speaking at the Realscreen event in New Orleans, highlighted recent docs including The Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York, directed by Anthony Caronna, and Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning from The Last Dance director Jason Hehir.
Heller said of The Last Call, which premiered in July, “[Caronna] feels that the true-crime in that case was a trojan horse to getting the audience there and then having a much deeper issue about homophobia and the NYPD and all of the bad things that allowed this bad man to stay on the loose and brutalize people. This post contains spoilers for "The Exorcist: Believer."
50 years ago, the incomparable William Friedkin's adaptation of William Peter Blatty's "The Exorcist" caused a media frenzy. Protests took place outside theaters, people were reported to be throwing up and passing out in their seats, and stories of the film's "cursed set" only added to the film's allure. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Office of Film and Broadcasting (Usccb-ofb) officially and publicly condemned the film as being unsuitable for a wide audience, and Warner Bros. Studios used stories of religious outrage to keep the media machine running. However, according to Amy Chambers' "Somewhere Between Science and Superstition: Religious Outrage, Horrific Science, and 'The Exorcist' (1973)," in reality, "reviews produced for the office by priests and lay Catholics and correspondence between the Vatican and the Usccb-ofb show that the church at least notionally interpreted it as a positive...

The former Beverly Hills home of singer Nancy Sinatra — where she was once photographed with some of her iconic made-for-walkin’ boots — is hitting the market for $2.95 million. Much of the midcentury property remains the way it was when Sinatra owned the home in the 1960s.
“It’s been my family home for 50 years,” says Orly Frank, the home’s current owner, whose parents Abraham and Renee Frank purchased the home from TV and film director Sobey Martin (Four Nights of the Full Moon, Lost in Space), who had himself acquired it from Sinatra. “He lived in it very briefly,” continues Frank, who recalls that she was in high school when her parents moved in to the house.
Over the years, according to Frank, “Nancy Sinatra stayed in touch with my family. She came up and visited, and she sent some handwritten notes to my parents. She loved the house.”

Judging from talk in restaurants and on the Telluride gondola, one of the films provoking the strongest reaction at the festival this year is The Mission. The National Geographic documentary, directed by Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss, tells the story of missionary John Chau whose shocking demise in 2018 made headlines around the world (and elicited insensitive memes).
The world premiere and subsequent screenings here have triggered debate over the ethics of Christian missionary work, particularly when it involves attempts to convert Indigenous people who have had little or no previous contact with outsiders, as was the case in Chau’s endeavor. He took it upon himself to try to bring the Gospel to the North Sentinelese, a group living on a remote island in the Andaman Sea. After initially being repelled by a warning shot from an arrow, Chau returned the next day and was felled on the beach. His body was never recovered.
