Edward James Olmos is recalling the harrowing experience of battling throat cancer. The legendary actor spoke about it publicly for the first time with Mando Fresko on the “Mando & Friends” podcast, saying doctors had to aggressively attack the cancer to the point they were unsure what his voice would sound like after it was all said and done.
The 76-year-old actor says he’s thankful to be alive after finishing his last round of radiation on Dec. 20. The “Stand and Deliver” star credits his relentless pursuit of living a healthy lifestyle — with daily exercise and healthy eating — which he says gave him a fighting chance against a cancer that’s cost the lives of many of his friends.
“This would be the first time publicly I’ll be coming out and saying it, but I had throat cancer,” Olmos said. “I just finished getting through it. December 20 was my last radiation.

Edward James Olmos has spoken out about his battle with throat cancer on Mando Fresko’s podcast, “Mando & Friends.”
The 76-year-old Olmos said he finished chemotherapy and radiation in December.
“I sit here saying now to you, Mando and friends, that one thing that I’m very grateful for was that I was in condition to fight this,” Olmos said. “I was in good condition — and I still am. I swim a mile a day at least, sometimes two miles a day. Every day, seven days a week. And then I row and do weights.”
Still, Olmos said he lost 50 pounds duing treatment, including a lot of muscle mass.
“There were times in the months of treatment that the body gives up. And I didn’t want to take my food through my stomach,” Olmos said. “They had to get 2,500 calories into my body every day. That was ridiculous, that was so hard.

Edward James Olmos is opening up for the first time publicly about his battle with throat cancer.
In an interview with Mando Fresko on Mando & Friends shared Thursday, the actor detailed his recent health scare.
“This would be the first time publicly I’ll be coming out and saying it, but I had throat cancer,” Olmos said. “I just finished getting through it. December 20 was my last radiation and the week before I’d finished my chemo.” He noted that he spent “months and months” on radiation and chemo.
The 76-year-old went on to explain that he still has a bump where his lymph nodes were: “They burned them out because they shot this area with radiation.” He also recalled the doctors telling him that because he was undergoing radiation, they weren’t sure how his voice would sound after treatment.
“A lot of my friends have passed because of this.
