Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden surged past defending champion Marcus Ericsson on the final lap – then jumped out of his car and ran into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway grandstands to celebrate with fans – as he won the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 for the first time in his career.
“I started out as a fan in the crowd and this place is amazing, regardless of where you’re sitting,” Newgarden said after the race. I have always wanted to go up into the crowd here. I’ve seen people go up the fence – I wanted to go through the fence. I wanted to celebrate with the people…it was a dream of mine.”
Newgarden gets his first Indy 500 win in his 12th try, tying Sam Hanks (1958) for the most starts for a first-time champion. It’s team owner Roger Penske’s record-extending 19th race win.

Josef Newgarden, a two-time IndyCar champion and star of the new “100 Days to Indy” series on the CW network, shook a little spice into the rivalry between his North American open-wheel racing series and Formula One – suggesting that “Drive to Survive” on Netflix has been “fabricating” storylines.
Newgarden made his comments from onstage Wednesday night during a Q&a session following the premiere of “100 Days to Indy,” a quick-turnaround documentary-style show being co-produced by CW and Vice. He said IndyCar, which holds its third event of the 2023 season this weekend in Long Beach, has enough close racing to keep things interesting organically.
“The competition is so good that there’s no need to fabricate anything,” Newgarden said, “unlike … some motorsports products.”
That drew a knowing laugh from the Long Beach crowd and fellow IndyCar drivers onstage including Pato O’Ward, Marcus Ericsson, Scott McLaughlin and “Drive to Survive” director...

No one disputes the direct line between the exploding popularity of Formula 1 in the United States and the hit series “Drive to Survive,” soon to launch its fifth season on Netflix. So it was only a matter of time before IndyCar, America’s premier open-wheel racing series, would try something similar.
But getting F1’s American counterparts to open the throttle could be tricky – at least at first.
A production crew from Vice Media this week began crawling all over Thermal, California, where the Ntt IndyCar Series’ nearly 30 regular drivers started testing their machines ahead of next month’s 2023 season debut. The TV series, “100 Days to Indy,” is expected to air this year on the CW.
IndyCar brass has instructed teams to allow the Vice crews unfettered access, forbidding them from dismissing cameras for any reason. But it sounds like some IndyCar teams – with widely varying degrees of media...

An all-time finish in the Indianapolis 500 saw a red flag halting the race with just four laps to go, setting up a sprint to the finish that saw Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson fend off a late charge to win.
The first Indy 500 in front of a full capacity crowd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2019 saw a yellow flag come out on the final lap, but Ericsson was already in command.
“I was praying so hard that there was not going to be another yellow flag,” Ericsson said after his win. “But I can’t believe it. I’m so happy.” Ericsson becomes the second Swedish driver to win the Indianapolis 500, joining 1999 winner Kenny Brack.
Ericsson took control of Sunday’s race late and had it under control for Chip Ganassi Racing until a crash by teammate Jimmie Johnson with four laps remaining brought out a rare red-flag stoppage at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
