Fox is preparing to handle more animals. The network has renewed Joel McHale-fronted comedy Animal Control for a second season.
The move is a boon for the company’s first wholly owned live-action company, which it said was its most-streamed scripted debut of all time.

Fox wants in on the broadcast comedy renaissance and is hoping that Animal Control, a single-camera comedy starring Joel McHale, will provide that bite.
As Abbott Elementary soars on ABC, NBC has a multi-camera hit in Night Court and CBS continues to scare up viewers with Ghosts, Fox is looking for its own comedy pet project, which premieres tonight.
“We believe that Animal Control is going to be the comedy that propels Fox back to the forefront of this comedy renaissance that’s currently underway. That’s why we’re going all in and giving it this huge launch because we really believe in it,” Michael Thorn, President of Scripted Programming at Fox told Deadline.
“I think it’s great for broadcast TV to have several comedies that people are watching and engaging in and I really believe that the majority of the audience wants to laugh right now and the more comedies are working,...

How’s this for a creature comfort? Joel McHale is back leading another pack of lovable oddballs in an unlikely setting, only this time, instead of a community college, they’re protecting the community. McHale stars in the sharp new comedy, Animal Control, as Frank Shaw, one of the long-suffering officers working for a Seattle animal-control department. He tells us more. I think your fans are going to love seeing you in another ensemble comedy surrounded by quirky characters, like your partner Fred “Shred” Taylor (Michael Rowland), a super cheery ex–pro snowboarder, and your awkward boss, Emily Price. Joel McHale: Well, aren’t we all quirky? [Laughs] No, this is definitely a weird group. I was drawn to it because the characters are so darn well-drawn. And it’s something we don’t really see, very similar to how we never saw community colleges on TV. (Credit: Fox) Have you ever called animal control yourself?...

Before entering an ostrich enclosure, Frank, an animal control officer, sneaks something into his partner’s back pocket. It’s a stick of jerky, and within moments, Frank is openly guffawing as the flightless birds are chasing his hapless colleague.
That’s the general vibe of “Animal Control,” a new sitcom on Fox. Here, “Community” alumnus Joel McHale plays Frank, a former cop who got fired after trying to root out corruption. (This is a neat trick in sidestepping the ongoing national conversation about policing — our complicated protagonist got removed from the force for being too virtuous.) His partner, a Fred who goes by Shred (Michael Rowland), arrived on this particular force through an unconventional path as well; he’s a former pro snowboarder whose laid-back affect suggests that, inside, he never really left the slopes.
It’s their relationship that is the backbone of “Animal Control,” but that backbone...

You’ve seen Fox’s Animal Control before, even if you can’t possibly have seen Fox’s Animal Control before because it’s a brand-new series. From its opening seconds, the comedy feels familiar in everything from its character types to its interpersonal dynamics to the rhythms of its predictable punchlines.
This is not necessarily a complaint. Sitcoms often thrive on the reliability of a well-worn formula, and in that regard, Animal Control knows how to deliver exactly what’s expected of it. What it hasn’t figured out, at least in the first three half-hours sent to critics, is how to deliver the extra bit of zing that might distinguish it from all the other shows serving up variations of the same thing.
Its premise is straightforward; think Brooklyn Nine-Nine if the characters were policing creatures and not other humans. Joel McHale headlines the cast as Frank, an...

Exclusive: Joel McHale got up close and personal with a baby cougar for Fox‘s Super Bowl ad promoting the network’s new comedy series Animal Control.
The spot, which will air during Sunday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, pokes fun at the cost of an ad for the big game as McHale quips: “Wanna hear something crazy? This ad cost 3 million, and only half of that went toward my hair.”
He adds: “And everything you’ve heard is true. Attractive cougars in your area want to meet you.”
His co-star (the baby cougar) sits peacefully in his arms as he tells viewers to tune in Thursdays at 9 p.m. for the show. In an outtake, McHale jokes that Fox only gave the show 15 seconds for their ad, which, coincidentally, is “the maximum amount of time you can hold a cougar before it decides to maul you.
