Dylan O’Brien is a bloody mess in the upcoming drama “Ponyboi.”
Based on the 2019 award-winning short film of the same name, “Ponyboi” stars O’Brien, Victoria Pedretti, and Indya Moore, with writer-director River Gallo leading the feature.
The official synopsis reads: Ponyboi is an intersex runaway. He works at a laundromat and hustles as a sex worker. But after a mysterious encounter with a man from his dreams, he learns that perhaps he is worthy of leaving his seedy life in New Jersey behind.
First-look photos show O’Brien covered in blood, with Pedretti sporting a fake pregnant belly. The duo previously worked together on 2020 anthology series “Amazing Stories.”
Gallo co-directed the short alongside Sadé Clacken Joseph, with Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, and Seven Graham executive producing. “Ponyboi” premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.
The feature film is directed by Esteban Arango (“Blast Beat”) with Ed Wu serving as the cinematographer.

You need to start watching “Rap Sh!t” yesterday.
Created by Issa Rae, HBO Max’s new comedy series follows the story and perspective of Shawna (Aida Osman), an aspiring Miami rapper working at a hotel for the time being. When she teams up unexpectedly with Mia (KaMillion), their impromptu freestyle becomes a viral track and the start of a promising collaboration.
“Rap Sh!t” is hyperspecific, laugh-out-loud funny, and deeply engrossing. Osman and the cast shine with Rae’s once-again winning team of writers and directors. It’s a breakout comedy series that isn’t to be missed.
Here are five (more) reasons to watch “Rap Sh!t” on HBO Max.
1. The Artist’s Struggle
In the very first episode, Shawna laments the state of the rising rap community online, a cacophony of influencers, social climbers, and the appearance-obsessed, all notably lacking in the talent she knows she has. “Rap Sh!t...

CAA has signed writer-director Sadé Clacken Joseph, who most recently directed two episodes of Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t,” for representation.
The HBO Max comedy series stars Aida Osman, KaMillion, Jonica Booth and Rj Cyler, with Syreeta Singleton as showrunner. Joseph helmed the pilot and second episode, titled “Something for the City” and “Something for the Girls” respectively. Both launched on July 21 to widespread critical acclaim.
“’Rap Sh!t’ may be grounded in reality, but there’s something lightly surreal about the experience of watching it,” Variety’s Caroline Framke wrote in her review of the series, examining how the comedy “bobs and weaves between its stories and the ones its characters are constantly posting on Instagram.”
Of the visual language of the show, Framke added: “The camera adopts the perspective of their phones as they scroll and Facetime; people watch each other’s stories with suspicion and envy; onscreen...

Just days before Rap Sh!t’s HBO Max debut, the Issa Rae produced comedy looks to be coming back for a second season and heading out to the Golden State.
Penned by the Insecure co-creator and starring Aida Osman and KaMillion, Rap Sh!t was awarded over 12.6 million this morning in the latest round of small screen tax credits from the state of California. Centered on job creation, the award was one of the two relocating series allocations during this award period from the California Film Commission.
The incentive is intended for a Season 2 of the Miami-set series about the trials and tribulations of two old but now not-so close friends who band together to form a hip hop group. With Rap Sh!t to drop on the Warner Bros Discovery streamer on July 21, no formal Season 2 announcement has come from HBO Max yet. However, the application for the tax credit...

Natasha Rothwell has lent her voice to a new ad for Planned Parenthood.
Released in the wake of the Supreme Court’s June 24 ruling overturning the constitutional protections granted in Roe v. Wade, the PSA is a somber, weather-themed clip, with the White Lotus star encouraging Americans to join the women’s health organization in fighting to restore reproductive rights.
“For decades, anti-abortion supporters and politicians have worked to overturn Roe through voting restrictions, unjust laws, misinformation and fear-mongering,” Rothwell said in a statement. “But for generations, activists have also fought for our freedoms — and won. Together, we will build on this legacy by lifting our voices and mobilizing in our communities to defend abortion rights. We have always been a force to be reckoned with, and we won’t back down now. We will be fearless. Let our message be clear: Keep your bans off our bodies.
