The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is moving ahead with a plan to eliminate two of its gender-specific acting categories. As first reported by Variety in August, the organization has been looking into merging combing its outstanding younger actor and actress categories into one. The TV Academy is expected to formally announce the change on Thursday, in time for its 2020 awards.
The new category will now be called Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series, replacing the two actor and actress categories.
Also, NATAS plans to clarify that in its remaining gendered acting categories, performers will be encouraged to enter the one they feel best fits their gender identity. The Daytime Emmys will allow eligible performers to select the category they feel best represents themselves.

Kyle Pettis accepts the younger actor award at the 2019 Daytime Emmys. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) is discussing the possibility that the Daytime Emmy Awards will combine its outstanding younger actor and actress categories into one, according to a report in Variety.
The organization already has a guest performer category that combines both genders. Now, the Daytime Emmys is looking at single young performer category, open to all. As part of the change, the newly merged category would also combine broadcast drama and digital drama performers in the same category.
The categories for younger actor in a drama series and younger actress in a drama series were first presented in 1985 when there were many more daytime soap operas in production. With just four major network soaps remaining, it may make sense to combine the younger performer categories into one (or eliminate it altogether).

Our sister site Variety reports that the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is considering a big change for its 2020 Daytime Emmy Awards: merging Best Younger Actor and Best Younger Actress into one gender-neutral category that would also include fresh-faced performers from digital dramas. Do you think that’s a good idea? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
The categories for younger actors honor performers aged 25 and under, and over the years they have honored up-and-coming stars like Julianne Moore (“As the World Turns”), Jonathan Jackson (“General Hospital”), Anne Heche (“Another World”) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (“All My Children”). But with only four broadcast soap operas left on the air — “Gh,” “Days of Our Lives,” “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” — there are far fewer eligible contenders for those awards than their used to be. Lovers of daytime soap operas know Kyler’s name. For three years he played an amazing young man named Theo Carver on Days of Our Lives. Theo was a singular character because he’s not just one of the too rare African Americans on a daytime soap; he also had autism. The role was wonderfully received, and clearly well portrayed. Kyler is still a fan favorite for his hard work even though he’s no longer on the series. For all you fans, we’ve collected a few juicy tidbits about the star while we all wait to see what role he takes on

“Days of Our Lives” came into the 2019 Daytime Emmys with the most nominations (27), but it was “The Young and the Restless” that left Sunday night’s ceremony with top honors. The CBS soap opera won Best Drama Series for the 10th time in its history, which makes it the second show ever to hit double digits, following “General Hospital” with its record 13 victories. But “Gh” had a good night too thanks to its historic sweep of the acting races. Check out the complete list of Emmy winners here.

Last year’s Daytime Emmy race for Best Younger Actor ended in an upset when Rome Flynn (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) defeated the overwhelming favorite, Casey Moss (“Days of Our Lives”). Will this year’s race be just as surprising? There’s only one returning nominee in the category (“Days” star Lucas Adams), who is joined by four newcomers. It’s the only acting race this year guaranteed to crown a first-time winner. So who’s out front?
The Daytime Emmys are unique in that the nominees and winners are both decided in a single round of voting during which blue ribbon panels viewed sample performance reels from the nominees. The academy made those reels available to the press, so here’s the scoop on all the Younger Actor contenders at this year’s kudos so you can make informed predictions here in our predictions center before this weekend’s show.

She’s up for Best Younger Actress for playing the conniving Claire Brady on “Days of Our Lives.” But alas, her time on the show is almost over. Fans of James Reynolds, who’s played Abe Carver on NBC’s soap opera Days of our Lives for almost four decades, can celebrate today — after the actor won the Outstanding Lead Actor award at the 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Sunday night. Reynolds treated the audience to some astonishing work last year and his long-overdue recognition came for scenes involving Abe and his comatose son Theo (Kyler Pettis). James Reynolds has played Abe Carver on NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” since 1981, and in the process earned nominations at the Daytime Emmys for Best Supporting Actor in 2004 and 2017. The 2018 Daytime Emmy Awards will be presented on Sunday, April 29, but the winners in the drama acting categories have already been decided by blue ribbon panels that viewed sample performance reels. In the race for Best Younger Actress, Olivia Rose Keegan is nominated for her role as Claire Brady on NBC’s “Days of Our Lives.” This is the first nomination for Keegan, who has played the role since 2015. She submitted scenes in which Claire deals with the aftermath of the release of a sex tape featuring herself and her boyfriend.
The tape showing an intimate moment between Claire and Theo (Kyler Pettis) is leaked on the internet by Jade (Gabrielle Haugh). Claire is defiant about it when her grandmother Hope (Kristian Alfonso) and Theo’s father Abe (Best Actor nominee James Reynolds) confront her, and she is heartbroken and angry because Theo believes she released the tape herself to further her music career.

The 2018 Daytime Emmy Award winners will be announced on April 29, but they’ve already been decided in the soap opera acting categories by blue ribbon panels that viewed sample performance reels. That includes the race for Best Younger Actor, where Casey Moss is nominated for his role as Jj Deveraux on “Days of Our Lives.” The 24-year-old actor has played the role for the last five years, but this is his first Daytime Emmy bid. Will it lead to his first win?
Moss’s performance reel focuses on the police shooting of an unarmed black man. In this case, Moss is that police officer. In the first scene Detective Deveraux is interviewed by fellow cop Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso) about the incident. He remembers being alerted to an attempted break-in at a warehouse. When he investigated he confronted a man in a hoodie with an unknown device in his hand.
