The latest striking, singular foreign film to fall prey to the clutches of Hollywood remake artists, Swedish director Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure is a gloriously uncomfortable deconstruction of masculinity and cowardice.
A middle-class Swedish family holidaying in the Alps find their picture-perfect facade beginning to crack after a not-quite-brush with mortality. During lunch at a mountaintop restaurant, a seemingly distant avalanche crashes down over the terrace and envelops everything in sight. It's a deftly executed exclamation mark of a scene, and sets in motion the almost unbearably quiet domestic drama that follows.
The disaster movie setup rapidly gives way to something much pricklier and more gripping - as it turns out, the avalanche is at a safe distance from the restaurant, but it leaves chaos in its wake nonetheless.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

Think that only American families go on disastrous vacations? Well this new film from Sweden certainly disputes that notion. In writer/director Ruben Ostlund’s heart-wrenching drama, we’re introduced to a picture perfect family unit on “holiday” at a swanky ski resort up in the French Alps (they must be fairly well off to afford this little getaway). There’s handsome thirty-something dad Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke), lovely mom, Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsil), big sister Vera (Clara Wettergren), and kid brother Harry (Vincent Wittergren). Speaking of pictures, when we first meet them, the resort’s photog is snapping some shots of them on the slopes. But it seems that mom and dad needs extra prodding from the cameraman to get closer. Later, when Ebba looks at the proofs, her smile fades as she comes to the pic of her and her hubby. They continue to ski away their days until...

With previous screenwriting-directing gigs in The Guitar Mongoloid (04), Un Certain Regard selected Involuntary (08), and the Directors’ Fortnight selected Play (11), it is with Force Majeure (aka Turist), that Swede Ruben Östlund celebrates his first decade in filmmaking. Starring Johannes Bah Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergren, Vincent Wettergren, Kristofer Hivju, Fanni Metelius and Brady Corbet, his fourth foray was rewarded with a Special Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and would land at major film festivals such as Tiff prior to bing released theatrically by Magnolia Pictures (October 24th). Here is the premiere night presentation of the film and post-screening applause.

Last year, RADiUS scored at the box office and in Awards Season with its documentary 20 Feet From Stardom (nearly $4.95 million and Best Documentary Feature Oscar win). This year, it may have another non-fiction awards behemoth, hitting theaters this weekend.
Citizenfour, directed by journalist and filmmaker Laura Poitras, tells the story of Nsa leaker Edward Snowden as he disclosed massive domestic U.S. government spying. The film unfolds in real time as Poitras and Guardian colleague Glenn Greenwald, working on a long-term project about government surveillance, were contacted online by a mysterious source calling himself “Citizenfour.” The film, completed in secret while Poitras was in self-imposed virtual exile, alleges even more Nsa overreaching at home and abroad than just what came out of the massive pile of U.S. documents Snowden leaked.
Another potential awards contender also arrives in U.S. theaters this weekend: Sweden’s entry for Foreign Language Oscar,...

I can only hope to do writer/director Ruben Ostlund's Force Majeure justice within the confines of a review. It's being marketed as "wickedly funny" and classified a "pscyhodrama" and when placed under a microscope requiring definition I guess that works. As for the title, it alludes to the guiding force of the film's narrative. In this case beginning with a circumstance that befalls a Swedish family during their ski vacation in the French Alps, a situation that puts into question gender roles and puts a wealth of strain on the marriage of Tomas and his wife Ebba. To say it's "wickedly funny" is not to necessarily suggest you'll laugh out loud, but comes as a result of Ostlund's dark sense of humor, his ability to laugh at human folly while also recognizing the uncomfortable darkness of the situation. Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke) and Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli) have brought their two children,...

Force Majeure (Turist) Magnolia Pictures Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten. Data-based on Rotten Tomatoes Grade: B+ Director: Ruben Östlund Screenplay: Ruben Östlund Cast: Brady Corbet, Kristofer Hivju, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Johannese Kuhnke, Clara Wettergren, Vincent Wettergren Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 8/20/14 Opens: November 2014 In writer-director Ruben Östlund’s darkly comic vision, a cowardly decision in a single moment can spell either an end to a marriage or at least redefine a couple, who might think, “This is not the person I married.” It doesn’t matter how rich or poor the couple may be, and in fact the principals in “Force Majeure,” Swedish title “Turist,” are upper-middle class tourists [ Read More ]

I admit I was slacking a little bit in updating the list of Foreign Language Oscar submissions for this year, but I just did a complete overhaul and we're now up to 29 total films submitted, one of which is Cannes Film Festival hit Force Majeure from writer/director Ruben Ostlund starring Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergren and Vincent Wettergren. Magnolia picked up distribution rights and will bring the film to theaters on October 24. Here's the synopsis: A critical favorite at this year's Cannes Festival, where it took the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard, this wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family--handsome businessman Tomas, his willowy wife Ebba and their two blond children--on a skiing holiday in the French Alps. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but during a lunch at a mountainside restaurant an avalanche suddenly bears down on the happy diners.

After being awarded with the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at this month's Cannes Film Festival, Ruben Ostlund's fourth feature "Force Majeure" has been acquired by Magnolia Pictures for its U.S. distribution. "Force Majeure" focuses on events that are set off by an avalanche scare at a ski resort. The film stars Johannes Bah Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergren, Vincent Wettergren, Kristofer Hivju and Fanni Metelius, and was written by Ostlund. The deal was negotiated for Magnolia by John Von Thaden and Dori Begley with Olimpia Pont Chafer for Coproduction Office.

Cannes -- What if you were to learn that you are not the man you think you are? And even worse, what if your family learned it at the same time you did? That is the question that is cannily posed by "Force Majeure," a new film written and directed by Ruben Ostlund, and with one minor quibble, I found myself deeply impressed by how complex and smart the movie is, and how well it sets up that question and then spends time digging deep to try and answer it. Ostlund pulls off a remarkable balancing act of tone throughout the film, and while many movies feel like they work overtime to try and reach some sort of profound statement, "Force Majeure" effortlessly offers up an examination of just how difficult it is to define and live up to modern ideas of masculinity. Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke) and Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli...
