Box office preview: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ will try its best not to divide the moviegoing nation
After a quieter April opening weekend, we get a slightly busier one with one high profile wide release and a handful of smaller releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “Civil War,” filmmaker Alex Garland‘s fourth feature film as a director, and one that is reportedly A24’s biggest budget production, reportedly costing $50 million. Set in a dystopian war-torn future America, the movie stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” as two wartime journalists heading to D.C. to interview the President (Nick Offerman), who is about to be deposed by a group of opposing rebels. The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Garland established himself as a screenwriter with films like Danny Boyle‘s “28 Days Later” and the 2012 “Dredd” movie starring Karl Urban, but his 2015 directorial debut “Ex Machina...

Within its first few minutes, director Wade Allain-Marcus’ “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” proves a worthy remake. Putting a modern comic spin on its ’90s counterpart’s opening sequence, it sets up our young heroine for a rude awakening and an indelible coming-of-age journey. By rearranging a few key details, losing some vestigial supporting characters and refocusing the story on a Black family learning to come together, the proceedings gain hilarity, buoyancy and resonance. Genuinely funny, charming and sincere, it’s a respectful and revelatory update in a world where those are few and far between.

[This story contains major spoilers from the first season of Love Island Games.]
Following an intense season of Peacock’s new spinoff Love Island Games, filled with both team and couples’ challenges and games, Justine Ndiba and Jack Fowler came on top.
Though they have been in the villa before in Love Island USA season two and Love Island U.K. season four, respectively, the new iteration brought a new competitive edge, focusing on extreme challenges and duels. While trying to build a romantic connection since coupling up at the beginning of the season, Ndiba and Fowler also had to battle it out with other couples to stay ahead.
Their relationship ran into a few speed bumps, including Fowler having to fight it out in the ring to stay in the villa with Ndiba at one point, but they proved to be stronger together through the end. Especially since they had to trust in each other and their own abilities since there wasn...

Rocky, Ginger and their family’s newest member Molly lead the charge in a fight to free their fellow chickens from a deadly nugget plot in the first full trailer for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
Hailing from the Academy and BAFTA award-winning Aardman animation studio and Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated director Sam Fell, it’s the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film ever, Chicken Run.
After pulling off their escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) have built a life on an island away from the human world — a sanctuary alongside the flock with their newest hatch, Molly (Bella Ramsey). “We’ve put the past behind us,” Ginger says in the two-and-a-half-minute trailer. “We have to think about Molly now.”
A curious Molly is unaware of the world across the water, the place her parents and community fled from, with Ginger fearing for her daughter.

It's been over 20 years since Aardman made history with the release of the first "Chicken Run." The studio's first feature film, it became the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time. This means that anticipations are quite high for the follow-up, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget." How do you follow what was a rather simple premise, two decades later? Well, not without some hiccups.
The new film finds Ginger and Rocky living with the other chickens on an idyllic island. The couple have a daughter, named Molly, the first new chicken born on the island. This is a rather big retcon from the end of the first movie, which ends with a bunch of chicks on the island being trained by Fowler. Turns out, this was a conscious choice based on two important points.
First of all, there are only two roosters on the island — Rocky and Fowler. It...

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the sequel to Aardman Animation’s 2000 stop-motion hit, is arriving 23 years after the original. Mused director Sam Fell during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders London, “At the end of the first one, you’re kind of a bit sick of chickens. It takes about three or four years to make these things so I think everyone wanted to do new things.”
At the time, he also remarked, “Animated sequels weren’t a big thing back then, Toy Story 2 was probably the first great animated sequel.”
A follow-up had been “in the background” and there were “brainstorming sessions,” but the original Chicken Run “is so brilliant, you can’t do something less than that,” Fell said.
Fast-forward to 2016 and Fell ran into the previous film’s co-director Peter Lord who told him, “We’ve got it, we figured it out.” The trick was a single line: “This time,...

Julius and Brutus Creed are officially reinstated in Nxt after the brother duo defeated Rip Fowler and Jagger Reid and seemingly destroyed the entirety of Schism in the process. Fowler and Reid jumped the Creeds to start the match and Brutus was carried off by masked members of Schism, leaving Julius all along to The Dyad who used their chaotic nature to make the cage their home. Julius managed to hold on long enough for Brutus to return, and the two showed why they belong in Nxt as they hit a dual Brutus Ball and secured their reinstatement to Nxt.

Match #1: Carmelo Hayes, Trick Williams & Ilja Dragunov def. Schism The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Trick Melo Gang and Ilja Dragunov proved they could work together by defeating Joe Gacy, Rip Fowler, and Jagger Reid, but there is still a level of animosity heading into their Nxt Championship Match at the Great American Bash. Fowler and Reid tried to use their signature underhanded tactics to gain an advantage, but Carmelo Hayes had Trick Williams’ back and saved him from their clutches. Once Dragunov tagged into the match, his tenacity got the better of him as he accidentally hit Williams with a flying corkscrew elbow, and while it frustrated Hayes’, it didn’t affect his game as two Schism followers interfered and allowed...

Canberra (Australia), July 26 (Ians) Australia’s national team has been dealt another major injury blow on the eve of their second FIFA Women’s World Cup match, with rising star Mary Fowler ruled out.
Football Australia (Fa) on Wednesday announced that 20-year-old forward Fowler and veteran defender Aivi Luik will miss Thursday night’s Group B match against Nigeria after sustaining separate concussions at training on Tuesday.
“Fowler and Luik have both fully recovered and commenced Fa’s graduated return to play protocol,” a statement said.
Fowler had been widely expected to reprise her starting role up front for Australia in the absence of captain Sam Kerr, who is continuing to recover from a calf injury suffered days before the start of the tournament, a Xinhua report said.
It means Caitlin Foord could be the Matildas’ only available striker for the second group stage match.

Canberra, July 24 (Ians) Australia have started preparations to face Nigeria in their second FIFA Women’s World Cup match with confidence that they can reach the knockout stages without injured captain Sam Kerr.
The Matildas on Sunday returned to training following a 1-0 win over Ireland in their World Cup opener on Thursday, reports Xinhua.
They will again be without star striker Kerr against Nigeria as the 29-year-old continues to recover from a calf injury suffered on the eve of the tournament.
Despite the absence of their best player and leader, the Matildas are confident they can guarantee qualification for the round of 16 with a win on Thursday night, with Caitlin Foord and Mary Fowler expected to again lead the attack.
“The message is we’ve just got to adapt and Cait and Mary played a really important role against Ireland,” defender Charli Grant told reporters on Sunday.

Rickie Fowler is well-known in golf circles. He’s won multiple PGA Tour championships and finished in the top 3 in the four Majors during his career. Fowler is only one of three golfers to shoot 62 in a major championship, which he did at the 2023 U.S. Open.
While his accomplishments in the sport are well documented, fans have questions about the woman by his side cheering him on at tournaments. Here’s more about Fowler’s wife Allison Stokke.

“Wild Kingdom” is roaring its way back onto NBC more than 60 years after it first debuted on the broadcast network. The iconic wildlife show will return to the Comcast-owned broadcaster this fall in a new iteration produced by Hearst Media Production Group in partnership with the original show’s sponsor, Mutual of Omaha.
Titled “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild,” the new version will be hosted by wildlife expert and “Wild Kingdom” alum Peter Gros, who first appeared on a version of the series in 1985 alongside then-host Jim Fowler. Fowler was the second expert to host “Wild Kingdom,” taking over for the show’s original narrator, zoologist Marlin Perkins, after acting as Perkins’ sidekick from the start.
For NBC’s new “Wild Kingdom,” Gros will be joined by wildlife ecologist Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, a National Geographic Explorer and research faculty member at the University of California,...

Scott Menzel, founder of The Hollywood Critics Association, said in an email to members Wednesday that the organization is restructuring and bringing in a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion advisor. The announcement arrives the same day former board president Nikki Fowler went public with accusations of racism against Menzel.
Fowler resigned earlier this month, citing a “hostile, biased and dismissive” work environment. On Wednesday, she shared a long tweet in which went into details, including that every time she mentioned racial bias, she was met with “hostility” by Menzel, Hca treasurer Alisa Gichon and vice president Nestor Bentancor.
“In my opinion, they wanted a Black female public-facing token President but brought in without any announcement, a white female Treasurer, Alisa, to be studio-facing with financial transparency alongside Menzel,” Fowler wrote.

Coming along twenty-three years after the release of the original Chicken Run, the sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will be released through the Netflix streaming service on December 15th – and even though that date is still six months away, Aardman Animations founder Peter Lord, producer Layla Herbert, and director Sam Fell shared some footage from the film at the Annecy International Film Festival.
As described by Deadline, the footage shown featured the utopian island chicken haven – described by Fell as a sort of “Chicken Wakanda” – created by heroine Ginger after she led the breakout from the Tweedy farm in late 1940s Britain (in the first movie). It’s now the early ’60s and Ginger is the mother with Rocky of rebellious teenager Molly. Ginger in the meantime has buried her rebel side, devoting herself instead to keeping the peace in her island idyll. The arrival of the fortress-like...

“The Blackening” is a slasher movie that’s also a slapdash enjoyable social satire. That the satire turns out to be sharper than the scares isn’t a problem — it’s all part of the film’s slovenly demonic party atmosphere. The set-up, which feels like a “Friday the 13th” sequel by way of “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” reunites nine old college chums to celebrate Juneteenth weekend in a big roomy house they’ve rented near the woods.
As Tina Turner’s cover of “I Can’t Stand the Rain” spins on the turntable, the first two to arrive, Morgan (Yvonne Orji) and Shawn (Jay Pharaoh), find their way to the basement game room, which has shelves of old board games, an ancient TV set, a Ouija board, and a prominently displayed game called The Blackening. Taking the box cover off, they discover, to their horror, that there’s a plastic...

In a message to its members, the Hollywood Critics Association board responded Wednesday to former president Nikki Fowler’s resignation, which alleged a “hostile” work environment, among other accusations.
“First and foremost, we want to recognize her contributions to the organization and the
outstanding leadership [Nikki] gave,” the letter began. “The goal has always been (and remains) to take Hca onwards and upward by elevating the members of this organization, and Nikki was a staunch advocate of this.”
In her resignation letter to the critics association on Friday, Fowler described a “hostile, biased and dismissive executive work environment” that was “not in alignment with the original duties offered when elected president last year.”

Nikki Fowler, an entertainment journalist who has served as the president of the Hollywood Critics Association during a tumultuous period in the history of the organization, which produces the Hca Awards, has resigned from that position and the group, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
In a letter obtained by THR on Friday, Fowler wrote to the Hca’s board that, for her “own well-being,” she is no longer willing to subject herself to “a hostile, biased and dismissive executive work environment.”
Fowler, who in 2006 founded and has since served as editor-in-chief of the entertainment publication/website Glitter, had been an Hca member since May 2021, served on its board since April 2022 and as its president since September 2022.
She stood behind the organization when it came under fire last year amid questions of financial and voting impropriety, emphasizing the importance of its founders’ stated mission of being gender balanced and racially diverse.

Two highly-anticipated comedy series are hitting streaming platforms this week, the excruciatingly relatable "Beef" on Netflix and the musical prequel series, "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies" on Paramount+. Meanwhile, there are films like "The Drop" and "Mayhem" available to stream that might help viewers get ready for a series like "Beef." Both flicks are exclusive to their prospective streaming platforms, so hopefully you've got Hulu and Shudder in addition to Netflix. There's also the Netflix series "Julie and the Phantoms" and the oft-forgotten "Grease 2" on Paramount+ to serve as the perfect companion pieces to "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies." Last-up, there's also the Prime Video series "Paper Girls" which manages to capture the girl-power energy of the new prequel series while boasting a stand-out performance by one of the stars of "Beef."

Dreams. Some of my favorite work at this year’s Berlinale engaged in some way with death or the afterlife. Lighten up, you say? Impossible. The most literal and beguiling of these was Lois Patiño’s Samsara, which ingeniously conjured the transitional passage between life and death, Buddhism’s intermediate state of bardo. There were the cinematic afterlives of lost films, excavated collections, and reimagined family albums; the archive’s perpetual reincarnation as a generative source for experimental and artists’ film. There were homages to artists from the past, whose legacies continue to inspire the present, including work by the recently deceased Michael Snow and Takahiko Iimura, and film tributes to avant-garde legends like Margaret Tait in Luke Fowler’s Being in a Place, and John Cage in Kevin Jerome Everson’s If You Don’t Watch the Way You Move. Then there was the teeming, unseen world of spirits...

Since the beginning of the mumblecore movement in the 2000s, independent cinema has been saturated with stories of young (often white) people in their 20s in a state of arrested development. For these people, adulthood is a playground characterized by risk-taking and pontificating about the state of their romantic relationships. With spare lighting and naturalistic camera movements, these films attempt to mimic the rawness of real life, adding weight to the mundane. Though the movement has already passed, these stories continue to thrive at festivals.
In Lisa Steen’s feature directorial debut Late Bloomers, millennial angst is once again at the center of a deeply personal, minimalist story. Karen Gillan plays Louise, an aimless and depressed musician in her 20s struggling to get past a painful breakup. When she discovers that her ex-boyfriend is moving on without her, Louise tries to drunkenly climb into his apartment through the window. Falling and injuring her hip,...
