Will Hollywood studios license their productions as training material for artificial intelligence models? That question seems to be on every big tech firm’s mind. After OpenAI held talks with film industry bigwigs, Alphabet and Meta have followed suit by working their respective studio ties.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Alphabet and Meta are hoping to convince studios to license their content so that it can be used to train video generation software. OpenAI has already staked its claim in that field with Sora, a potentially revolutionary video generator that is currently undergoing tests. As OpenAI fine-tunes Sora, the Microsoft-backed firm has touted the product’s potential for film productions, with CEO Sam Altman leading discussions with Hollywood elites.

YouTube is actively looking into whether OpenAI used creators’ content to train Sora, Google CEO Sundar Pichai says.
He joined The Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel on the latest episode of Patel’s podcast The Decoder, and said YouTube is “following up and trying to understand” recent reports alleging OpenAI scraped videos from its platform for its text-to-video generator product.
You’ve probably seen the mega-viral interview where OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati pulled quite the memorable face and said she didn’t know if Sora had been trained on YouTube videos.
“I’m actually not sure about that,” Murati told The Wall Street Journal. “You know, if they were publicly available to use, there might be data. But I’m not sure. I’m not confident about it.”

Even as linear TV continues to struggle, the video advertising market on YouTube continues to grow.
The Google-owned video platform on Thursday reported advertising revenue of $8.1 billion in Q1 2024, up more than 20% from $6.7 billion in the Q1 quarter a year ago. Wall Street estimates were for YouTube ad revenue of $7.7 billion.
Q1 is often a soft one for advertising, in Q4 (which is usually the best quarter for ads), YouTube had ad revenue of $9.2 billion. Both quarters were up by more than $1.2 billion from a year ago.
“Our results in the first quarter reflect strong performance from Search, YouTube and Cloud,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a statement. “We are well under way with our Gemini era and there’s great momentum across the company. Our leadership in AI research and infrastructure, and our global product footprint, position us well for the next wave of AI innovation.”

The Alphabet earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2023 was a mixed bag, but the holding company’s video-oriented subsidiary delivered positive results. YouTube ad revenue reached $9.2 billion in Q4, up from $7.96 billion a year ago.
YouTube ad revenue rose 15% year over year and was up a similar amount quarter-over-quarter. In its Q3 2023 earnings report, Alphabet put YouTube’s ad revenue at approximately $7.95 billion. The latest figure puts YouTube in a very different place from where it was a year ago. In Q4 2022, the video giant’s ad earnings missed Wall Street expectations. In contrast, YouTube met analyst projections during the most recent quarter.
Alphabet’s topline revenue of $86.31 billion exceeded projections by about $1 billion, but some divisions of Google‘s business are lagging behind the pack. Its flagship search engine posted quarterly revenue of $48 billion, which fell just short of expectations. On the day Alphabet released its Q4 2023 earnings,...

Google’s subscription platforms grew 23% in year-over-year revenue in 2023, though the company declined to confirm how many subscribers Sunday Ticket has.
Google met with Wall Street analysts via conference call this week to discuss its latest quarterly earnings report. The company maintained its reputation for keeping detailed information close to the vest, but it did reveal tantalizing tidbits, including the possibility that its live TV streaming platform YouTube TV will be expanding to other territories outside the United States.
Google executives said they were “closely looking” into the possibility of an international launch of YouTube TV. Chief business officer Phillipp Schindler said Google was “pleased” with Sunday Ticket signups, but declined to confirm a hard subscriber count. Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube, said subscriptions from its digital platforms helped bring in $15 billion in overall revenue last year.
The figure includes the sale of subscriptions to YouTube Premium, third-party subscriptions sold through YouTube’s streaming marketplace YouTube Primetime Channels, an uptake in the streaming cable TV replacement YouTube TV and various other subscriptions sold through the Google Play Store.
Executives revealed the data point during a conference call with investors and reporters on Tuesday after Alphabet said it earned $86.31 billion during Q4 2023, an increase of nearly 14 percent on a year-over basis and slightly higher than the $85.33 billion Wall Street analysts expected.
During the call, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai affirmed the bulk of Google subscription revenue came from YouTube, though he did not say which of YouTube’s various products brought in the most money.

Google execs are actively considering an international expansion of pay-tv service YouTube TV, Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call.
“It is something we are closely looking at,” Schindler said. “There’s nothing specific I have to add at this moment in time on this one.”
Schindler and CEO Sundar Pichai both took note of highlights for YouTube TV in the quarter, notably the debut of NFL Sunday Ticket as an exclusive offering after 29 years on DirecTV. The premium package is available either as an add-on for YouTube TV subscribers or as a stand-alone offering through YouTube’s channel store.
“YouTube TV is doing well,” Pichai said. “They’ve had great consumer feedback on the experience.” NFL Sunday Ticket “has found its perfect home on YouTube,” he added.
YouTube landed Sunday Ticket a little more than a year ago, paying more than $2 billion a season in a 7-year deal.

In a blowout quarter, YouTube saw its advertising revenue soar to $9.2 billion in Q4 of 2023, up from just below $8 billion in the year prior and the quarter prior, and in line with what Wall Street was expecting.
In a statement, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted YouTube’s performance, noting that the video platform is “already benefiting from our AI investments and innovation. As we enter the Gemini era, the best is yet to come.”
YouTube’s quarter indicates that the video platform is firmly back in growth mode after a quiet year last year.
On the company’s earnings call, executives revealed that YouTube and Google subscriptions, including YouTube Premium, YouTube Music, NFL Sunday Ticket, and YouTube TV, are now a $15 billion business annualized.
Overall, YouTube parent company Alphabet reported revenues of $86.3 billion in the quarter, up 13 percent year over year. It also repoed net income of $20.7 billion. Total advertising revenue,...

The third quarter of 2023 produced some positive results for YouTube and its parent company. During its trimonthly call with shareholders, Alphabet reported $76.69 million in quarterly revenue and a net income of $19.69 billion over the same period.
Both of those numbers outdid Wall Street expectations. The overall revenue figure represented an 11% year-over-year increase. Alphabet doesn’t break out all of YouTube’s revenue during its earnings call, but the video platform’s ad business experienced its own double-digit year-over-year uptick. According to Alphabet, YouTube pulled in $7.95 billion of quarterly ad revenue, which beat projections and exceeded YouTube’s Q3 2022 ad revenue by 12.5%.
Since Alphabet doesn’t include YouTube’s subscription revenue in its earning reports, the financial impact of the NFL Sunday Ticket package is still a mystery. It’s been almost one year since YouTube acquired the coveted football slate, and top Alphabet decision-makers indicated that the package has strong potential.

YouTube advertising revenue increased 12% to $7.95 billion in the third quarter compared with the same period a year ago, helping corporate parent Alphabet beat Wall Street expectations.
Total revenue rose 11% over the year-earlier quarter to hit $76.7 billion, while earnings per share surged to $1.55 from $1.06. Wall Street analysts had estimated revenue of $71.6 billion and Eps of $1.36.
Despite the results coming in well above forecasts, Alphabet shares slipped more than 5%. They came into earnings up 59% this year to date.
The main flaw in the earnings report that was seized upon by investors was the performance of Alphabet’s cloud business. It undershot Wall Street estimates, reaching $8.41 billion in revenue compared with forecasts for $8.6 billion.

Google said that it will require election advertisers to disclose when their spots include content that has been “digitally altered or generated,” including via the use of artificial intelligence.
The announcement comes amid increasing concerns over the ability of AI to manipulate candidate images and statements in advance of the 2024 presidential election. When President Joe Biden announced his reelection campaign, the Republican National Committee responded with an AI-generated ad that imagined a dystopian future if he had another term.
A Google spokesperson said, “Given the growing prevalence of tools that produce synthetic content, we’re expanding our policies a step further to require advertisers to disclose when their election ads include material that’s been digitally altered or generated.” The spokesperson said that the policy would “further support responsible political advertising and provide voters with the information they need to make informed decisions.”

As Google celebrates its 25th birthday this month, its CEO Sundar Pichai has reminisced about how technology has changed the way we communicate, create and innovate. Celebrating Google’s rich history of events (the company will officially celebrate its 25th birthday later this month), Pichai said it’s time for some gratitude, and a moment to reflect.
“Years ago, when I was studying in the US, my dad — who was back in India — got his first email address. I was really excited to have a faster (and cheaper) way to communicate with him, so I sent a message.
“And then I waited…and waited. It was two full days before I got this reply Dear Mr. Pichai, email received. All is well,” he wrote late on Tuesday.
Fast forward to a few months ago.
“I was with my teenage son. He saw something interesting, took some quick pictures and shared them with his friends.

San Francisco, Sep 3 (Ians) Tech giant Google, which turns 25 on Monday, has come a long way from being born as a search engine in the garage of Susan Wojcicki — the future boss of YouTube — in a new tech landscape of generative AI, chatbots and social media.
Google was founded on September 4, 1998, by American computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were PhD students at Stanford University in California.
The company — now part of the parent group called Alphabet and run by Indian-origin Sundar Pichai — has diversified into several tech streams and launched several products.
The company rapidly grew to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Cloud, Chrome, YouTube, Workspace, Android operating system, cloud storage Drive, Google Translate), video chat app Meet, Pixel smartphones, Google Assistant, Bard AI and more

A gallery of tech industry CEOs, including Tesla/X’s Elon Musk, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sundar Pichai, are scheduled to attend a Senate forum on artificial intelligence next month.
They also will be joined by the president of the WGA, Meredith Stiehm, as well as other union leaders, along with Charles Rivkin, the chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association. The meeting, organized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, comes as AI is an issue in Hollywood’s current labor strife.
Schumer is billing this as the first “AI Insight Forum,” and it is scheduled for the morning of Sept. 13. It’s unclear if all of the attendees will be there in person or appear via videoconference.

San Francisco, Aug 3 (Ians) Google has announced new updates to the AI-powered Search Generative Experience (Sge), which includes related videos within AI-powered overviews.
With Sge, users can quickly get up to speed on a new topic, uncover quick tips for their specific questions or discover products and things to consider, the tech giant said in a blogpost on Wednesday.
“Sometimes, it’s more powerful to understand something by seeing it– so we recently brought images to even more AI-powered overviews.”
For instance, when someone searches for something like “tiniest birds of prey,” they will quickly be able to reference what the bird looks like and get relevant information from the web.
Over the next week, users will also start to see videos within some overviews where it will be helpful to see something in motion, such as a demonstration of a yoga pose, or how to get stains out of marble.

The second quarter of 2023 was a smashing success for Alphabet. In its latest earnings report, the parent company of Google and YouTube reported quarterly revenue of $74.60 billion and a net income of $18.37 billion during Q2.
Those figures allowed Alphabet’s earnings report to exceed Wall Street expectations for the second-straight quarter. The tech giant posted a strong overall showing in Q1 despite disappointing results from YouTube.
YouTube’s Q2 2023 performance told a different story. Over three months, the leading video platform hauled in $7.7 billion of ad revenue, which represents a year-over-year increase of about 5%. YouTube’s ad revenue had previously declined for three straight quarters.
Several factors contributed to YouTube’s reversal. In CEO Neal Mohan‘s first full quarter since he took over for former YouTube boss Susan Wojcicki, he began to deliver the creator-friendly tools he had previously teased. Q2 2023 was the first full quarter for Primetime Channels and YouTube Shorts ads.

YouTube posted 4% advertising revenue growth in the second quarter as parent Alphabet rode momentum in search and cloud services to smash Wall Street analysts’ expectations.
The tech giant reported diluted earnings per share of $1.44 and total revenue of $74.6 billion, compared with consensus forecasts for $1.20 and $65.4 billion, respectively. YouTube’s ad take came to $7.665 billion. The video giant changed leadership earlier this year, with Susan Wojcicki stepping down after 9 years as CEO and passing the baton to veteran exec Neil Mohan.
The upbeat quarterly report reverses more discouraging results of late, including an unprecedented dip in ad results at YouTube, which was seen as an ominous portent for other players navigating a choppy ad market. Total ad revenue had slipped in the two previous quarters, a rare slump for a dominant force in the ad arena.
“There’s exciting momentum across our products and the company,” CEO Sundar Pichai said in the earnings release.

YouTube brought in $7.7 billion in advertising revenue in its second quarter, reversing the prior trends of a downturn.
This is an increase from the $6.69 billion in the previous quarter, which had been the third consecutive quarter marking a decrease in ad revenue, and above the $7.3 billion brought in during the second quarter of last year. Overall, in the three months ended June 30, Alphabet, the parent company of YouTube, reported revenue of $74.60 billion in revenue and net income of $18.37 billion, or $1.44 per share, beating Wall Street expectations.
This is the first full quarter under new YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, who succeeded longtime executive Susan Wojcicki in March. In his first letter to the community, Mohan said “supporting the success of creators” was among his top priorities, and he planned to improve monetization tools and grow creator communities. Focus areas included YouTube’s short-form video offering, Shorts, and streaming products such as YouTube TV and Primetime Channels.

New Delhi, July 22 (Ians) The rapid rise of Indian-Americans from politics to administration, entrepreneurship to technology, medicine to hospitality, science to academia has put the global spotlight like never before on the high-achieving four million-plus strong diaspora.
The community happens to be the most educated with the highest median income in the US, with an average household earning of $123,700 — making them the top earners in the US among other Asians in the country.
As the profile of the Indian American community — now the second-largest immigrant group in the US — has grown, so too has its economic, political, and social influence, according to a recent Carnegie Endowment study.
In 2010, only 18 per cent of Americans saw India as “very important” to the United States, according to The Chicago Council survey.
Now, India is perceived by Americans as their seventh favourite nation in the world, with 70 per cent of people viewing India favourably in 2023, says a Gallup survey.

New Delhi, July 4 (Ians) Ironic it may read but a mental health and wellbeing manager working at Google for the last 10 years, is among 12,000 people who were handed out pink slips in January this year.
Writing on linkedIn, the UK-based Gaby Triess said she was “made redundant along with thousands of others” in January, but got “temporary protection during parental leave”, and her role at Google ended only last week along with her “second mat leave”.
The temporary protection meant that she “had more time than others to process the shock”, than others.
“After 10 years at a company that has always given me so much, the redundancy email was a major plot twist.”
Triess noted she served several roles at the tech giant: “first Google Books, then Google Movies and TV, but most of all Mental Health & Wellbeing”.

New Delhi, June 27 (Ians) The tech sector partnership between India and the US, announced last week during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic state visit, will turbocharge tech ecosystems in both the countries, accelerating the pace of innovation in critical emerging technologies for mutual and global benefit, says Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and It.
In an interaction with Ians, the Minister said the tech sector partnership — starting with an MoU in the critical and emerging technologies — is tectonic and historical.

Earlier this month, YouTube decided it would “stop removing content that advances false claims that widespread fraud, errors, or glitches occurred in the 2020 and other past US Presidential elections.”
That policy–a significant departure from YouTube’s previous crowing about how committed it is to preventing the spread of election misinformation–is now under fire from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

San Francisco, May 5 (Ians) US Vice President Kamala Harris has told top Big Tech CEOs, including Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI (ChatGPT fame), that the private sector has an ethical, moral, and legal responsibility to ensure the safety and security of their products.
In her meeting with CEOs of four US companies who are at the forefront of AI innovation, which also saw US President Joe Biden dropping by, she stressed that in order to realise the benefits that might come from advances in AI, “it is imperative to mitigate both the current and potential risks AI poses to individuals, society, and national security”.
“These include risks to safety, security, human and civil rights, privacy, jobs, and democratic values,” the White House said in a statement late on Thursday.
“Every company must comply with existing laws to protect the American people.

The first three months of 2023 proved to be a tumultuous time for Alphabet. The parent company of Google and YouTube started the quarter with a massive round of layoffs that affected many long-time employees. Then, in February, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki stepped down from her role after piloting the video platform for nearly a decade. Amidst all that turnover, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and TikTok’s search engine status presented great challenges for one of Google’s core businesses.
But after enduring all that turmoil, Alphabet is looking strong. The holding company’s Q1 2023 earnings exceeded expectations, though YouTube experienced a year-over-year decline for the third quarter in a row.
Alphabet reported strong topline numbers during a call with investors on April 25. The company’s Q1 earnings reached $1.17 per share, which beat projections by ten cents. Revenue topped out at $69.79 billion, nearly $1 billion above Alphabet’s expected quarterly mark.

New Delhi, April 26 (Ians) Google-owned YouTube saw its revenue from ads falling 2.6 per cent (year-on-year) in the March quarter — third quarter in a row that its ad revenue has decreased.
YouTube logged $6.69 billion in advertising revenue for the quarter that ended March 31, compared to $6.87 billion during the same period last year.
The company, however, is seeing growth in Shorts as watch time and monetisation is “progressing nicely”.
“People are engaging and converting on ads across Shorts at increasing rates,” according to Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer.
According to Sundar Pichai, Alphabet and Google CEO, the number of channels that uploaded to Shorts daily grew over 80 per cent last year.
“Those posting weekly on Shorts saw the majority of new channel subscribers coming from their Shorts posts,” he informed during the analysts’ call late on Tuesday.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube, bucked the recent trend in the tech sector and topped Wall Street’s financial expectations in the first quarter.
The company posted $69.8 billion in revenue, up 3% from the same quarter a year ago, and diluted earnings per share of $1.17, down 5%. Analysts’ consensus outlook was for revenue of $68.8 billion and earnings of $1.06 per share.
Those results were achieved despite a $2.6 billion charge taken during the quarter due to reductions in workforce and office space. Alphabet announced last January it was cutting 12,000 jobs, about 6% of its workforce. The largest staff reduction in company history followed what was described as a “rigorous review” of operations.
Investors responded positively to the earnings report, sending shares of Alphabet up almost 4% in after-hours trading. The stock more than doubled from early 2020 to the first half of 2021 as the pandemic magnified the draw of Alphabet’s products and services,...

New Delhi, April 22 (Ians) Google has updated its AI chatbot called Bard to help people with programming and software development tasks, including code generation, code debugging and explanation.
The company is launching these capabilities in more than 20 programming languages including C++, Go, Java, Javascript, Python and Typescript.
“You can easily export Python code to Google Colab — no copy and paste required. Bard can also assist with writing functions for Google Sheets,” said the tech giant.
In addition to generating code, Bard can also help explain code snippets for people, especially those who are learning about programming for the first time.
If Bard gives you an error message or code that doesn’t do what you intended, just tell Bard “this code didn’t work, please fix it”, and Bard can help you debug, said the company.
Bard is still an early experiment, and may sometimes provide inaccurate, misleading or false information while presenting it confidently,...

Pichai’s salary, however, has remained steady at $2 million for the past three years, according to reports.
On January 20, Google CEO confirmed in a letter to employees that about 12,000 people will be laid off globally, accounting for more than 6 per cent of the total workforce.
Amid layoffs, tech giant Google is also creating several cost-cutting measures such as cutting down on free snacks and workout classes for its existing employees, the media reported.
