Tyler the Creator reunited with fellow Odd Future member, Earl Sweatshirt, during his headlining performance at weekend two of Coachella 2024.
Joining Tyler for renditions of “AssMilk” (its first performance since 2014) and “Rusty,” Earl’s appearance marked the highlight of an otherwise guest-less set. Still, the joy the two expressed at sharing a stage again came across.
Calling Earl his “brother,” Tyler said, “I love this guy so fucking much.” After “Rusty,” the two embraced with a hug, and Earl turned to face Tyler’s stunning, desert-landscape-themed stage, saying “Look at the biggest show on Earth!” Watch videos of the performances below.
Elsewhere in his set, Tyler made allusions to another former collaborator: Frank Ocean. During the intro to the two’s duet, “She,” Tyler told the crowd to “sing the song” if they knew it, because Ocean was “not coming out.”

J Balvin made his return to Coachella on Sunday night, and he brought along Will Smith for a performance of “Men in Black” towards the end of his sub-headlining set.
Complete with backup dancers donned as ETs, a massive alien head popping up in the center, and a reprise of the 1997 film’s costumes, J Balvin pulled out all the stops for his Men in Black production. Will Smith emerged to perform the blockbuster’s titular theme song — halfway through, the track’s beat switched to a reggaeton groove, and Smith and J Balvin recreated the dance from the song’s music video.
The performance concluded with J Balvin being “captured” by suited backup dancers and Smith flashing the audience with a memory-eraser ray. Watch footage of Smith’s appearance below.

On Saturday night, Tyler the Creator headlined Coachella 2024 with a stunning, immersive performance, augmented by special guests like Childish Gambino, Kali Uchis, A$AP Rocky, and more.
With the stage decorated by massive sets and a wrap-around screen depicting an idyllic desert scene, Tyler’s set was a theatrical triumph. Throughout the set, the visuals morphed between cool starry nights and warm, sunshiney bliss, as Tyler exploded out of a camper van, donned an epic park ranger fit, scaled a cliff, and brought out his many guests.
The night’s surprise features began with Childish Gambino taking the stage for the Igor track “Running Out Of Time.” After that, A$AP Rocky helped deliver “Potato Salad” and “Who Dat Boy,” and Charlie Wilson loaned his voice to “Earfquake.”
A highlight of the set was its second-to-last song, “See You Again,” for which Tyler and Uchis dueted across the desert landscape.

Tyler, the Creator is no doubt one of the greatest showmen working today in hip-hop. During his headlining set on Saturday night (April 13) at Coachella, the rapper once again proved just that, transforming the main stage into a desert canyon and using lighting and projections to create an ambiance so vivid and entrancing that it could only have sprung from an imaginative mind as his own.
To that, Tyler made the most of his first headlining show at the festival, where he has performed numerous times before. “The first time I played Coachella was 2011,” he told the crowd midway through the set. “I didn’t know what the fuck Coachella was, but me and my friends at the time, we went by Odd Future. And it was great. We were in a house. We rented a crib, went to target n—a, bought some snacks, and performed. The performance was terrible.

When Jennifer Lopez started working on This Is Me… Now, she knew a lot of people wouldn’t get the full concept at first. Yes, she was planning an album that would be a direct sequel to her 2002 LP This Is Me… Then, an album she wrote when she was first falling in love with Ben Affleck, who she reconnected with and married almost exactly 20 years later. But she also wanted to pair the music with an out-of-the-box film that would capture the romantic journey she’d been on over the last two decades.

The last time Sean Combs’ music competed at the Grammys, a then-unknown Mark Zuckerberg had just created Facebook, Nipplegate occurred at the Super Bowl and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King garnered a record-tying 11 Oscars. It was 2004, and Combs, aka Diddy, won best rap performance by a group or duo — his third Grammy — for the thumping hit “Shake Ya Tailfeather,” featuring Nelly and Murphy Lee. The track appeared on the Bad Boys II soundtrack, which Diddy executive produced and released on his Bad Boy label.

Orquídeas includes the previously released singles “Muñekita” featuring El Alfa and City Girls’ Jt, “Te Mata,” and “Labios Mordidos” featuring Karol G. Few artists can set a scene like Kali Uchis. Each of her albums has proven that she’s a master of mood boards and a queen of aesthetics: Her 2018 debut album, Isolation, was a lush world of retro R&b best enjoyed on a heart-shaped couch; 2023’s Red Moon in Venus included cosmic, shape-shifting pop songs to be drunk up during a lunar eclipse. Across each project, she’s stitched disparate sonic textures together like fabric swatches and placed her voice front and center — allowing it to gently guide her...

Of course Sza’s Sos was the album I played the most in 2023 — but remember, it came out in December 2022 and I ranked it second on last year’s list of top albums, obviously under Beyoncé’s Renaissance.
Though Sza owned the year, several great albums showed up in 2023. Here are the projects that lived rent free in my home and in my headphones.
1. Victoria Monét, Jaguar II
It’s a beautiful thing when someone working to help others achieve their dreams steps into the limelight. With Jaguar II, that’s Victoria Monét. The songwriter behind hits for Ariana Grande and others has been releasing incredible music for years — check out 2018’s Life After Love, Pt. 2 and 2020’s Jaguar if you’re just arriving at her fan club — but she’s finally at the forefront, and her major label debut album is a masterpiece. She’s bold and bombastic on “On My Mama,...

Postmodern attempts at genre defiance have become de rigueur for pop artists today. In a streaming-dominated world where we can type away on our laptops to ambient hip-hop in the morning, sing along to old yacht-rock hits on our afternoon commute, and dance to Edm at night, what other way is there to keep our attention than to try to give us everything everywhere all at once? We’ve gotten a few attempts to do just that in 2023, from Kara Jackson’s quietly rebellious blending of folk and R&b, to Yves Tumor’s kitchen-sink instrumentation, to 100 gecs’s audacious and absurd hyperpop assaults.
Many of the artists who appear on this list, though, no longer seem content to just break down old barriers, as they also seek to shatter interpersonal and emotional ones as well. The oft-cited isolation of modern living, heavily exacerbated by the pandemic, has compelled some...

Two Colombiana reinas have teamed up to bring back Og reggaeton: Kali Uchis just released “Labios Mordidos,” a new collaboration with fellow superstar Karol G. The song carries an old-school reggaetón energy, as the artists sing sensually to each other about getting dirty in the dark, with Uchis declaring, “Tonight I’m a lesbian, you make me want it.”
Both stars have been teasing their new collab, which follows Bichota Season‘s “Me Tengo Que Ir,” for some time now. Karol G recently sang her verse in the collaboration while...

Bringing a stripped-down version of her Sos Tour to the grounds outside Dodger Stadium on Sunday night, Sza closed out Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival — the two-day music festival curated by Tyler, the Creator — with a stylish and soulful flourish.
The performance was a victory lap of sorts for the singer-songwriter born Solána Imani Rowel, her first since her nine Grammy award nominations — a record this year — were announced on Friday.
Pulling from her critical and commercial 2022 smash album Sos, her 2017 debut Ctrl and various other sources (her 2018 Black Panther soundtrack duet with Kendrick Lamar, “All the Stars,” plus covers of Dojo Cat’s “Kiss Me More” and Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy”), Sza writhed in giddy delight, her voice as strong as ever. She even mounted a silver ball suspended in the air for her rendition of “The Weekend.”

This year the Grammys moved the Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical categories into the general field. The way voting works, academy members are only allowed to vote in three fields besides general, and can only vote in 10 categories between those three fields. Songwriter of the Year was its own field when that award was introduced last year, and most members probably didn’t want to burn one of their three fields to vote for just one award. Now all voters can participate in these contests, hopefully generating a more representative list of who excelled behind the scenes. This year in particular has a diverse and exciting list of possible contenders in both categories, so let’s consider who might make the cut in the songwriting race.

On Instagram on Monday, Oct. 9, the Colombian-American artist teased LP4, tentatively titled, Orquídeas (or “Orchids” in English). Still, the record itself won’t arrive until Jan. 12, 2024.

Kali Uchis has announced her new album Orquídeas, out January 12th, 2024. It’ll mark her fourth studio album overall and her second sung entirely in Spanish.
While Uchis hasn’t offered many more details about the record, she did explain the significance of its botanical title: “The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth,” she explains in a press release. “I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower. This album is inspired by the timeless, eerie, mystic, striking, graceful and sensual allure of the orchid. With this vast scope of fresh energy, I wish to re-define the way we look at Latinas in music.”
Pre-orders are ongoing. See the artwork for Orquídeas below.
Orquídeas will arrive less than a year after her last LP, Red Moon in Venus. In August, she shared the single “Muñekita” featuring El Alfa and City Girls’ Jt.

A sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl merits no less than a special guest — or two. During Kali Uchis’ show at the storied Los Angeles venue, the singer surprised fans with special appearances from Omar Apollo and Tyler, the Creator during her career-spanning set.
After opening her show with “Muñekita” and her Tyler, the Creator collab “See You Again” by herself, Uchis welcomed frequent collaborator (and gay bestie) Apollo for his verse on Red Moon in Venus‘ “Worth the Wait.” The Mexican singer received a lap dance from Uchis’ backup dancers during the performance.

Karol G's New "Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season)" Is Drastically Different From the Original Album
There seems to be a subtle shift going on in reggaetón as of late. While 2022 and early 2023 saw the genre embrace a kind of eclectic, cross-genre experimentation (most visibly championed on Bad Bunny's critically acclaimed album "Un Verano Sin Ti"), the tail end of this year has seen the pendulum shift toward simplicity and a focus that characterized reggaetón's earlier years. Maybe it's due to the rise of the alt-perreo genre and experimentally inclined artists like RaiNao and Pink Pablo. Or maybe the recent resurgence of old-school artists like Chencho, Maldy, Jowell & Randy, and Tego Calderón has added a healthy dose of nostalgia to the zeitgeist. But regardless of the specific catalyst, many of today's most popular reggaetoneros are harkening back to the genre's roots. With her latest album, "Mañana Será Bonita (Bichota Season)," Karol G trades in the upbeat pop-reggaetón sound that characterized the original "Mañana Será Bonita" for...

Fresh off the success of her third studio album, Red Moon in Venus, and a sold-out tour, Kali Uchis is back with more dates and more new music.
Featuring Dominican dembow singer El Alfa and City Girls’ Jt, “Muñekita” is a grooving track with a fairly standard, irresistibly-dancey reggaeton beat (though Uchis has posted online that the album will not be primarily in the reggaeton style). Still, the single marks the onset of “a new era of Spanish-language music” for Uchis, according to the press release.
For her part, Uchis explained how excited she was to work with El Alfa and Jt. She first connected with the artists via DMs, and the collaboration was born out of the three’s mutual admiration. “I love bringing artists together that you’d least expect,” Uchis said in a statement. “El Alfa is a Latino legend and Jt is someone I’ve admired forever.
