ReviewD Imman’s background score valiantly tries to add some suspense to this Shakti Soundar Rajan film. But with the hopeless acting and unoriginal screenplay, it is a lost battle.Sowmya RajendranCredit: YouTube/ Think Music IndiaThere is something to be said about director Shakti Soundar Rajan’s obsession with making the ‘first’ movie of its kind in Tamil cinema. His last outing Teddy was the “first Tamil film to use an Indian animation company to design a special animated character”. But while his previous experiments sound more impressive on paper – the first Tamil film to feature a dog as the main character; the first Tamil zombie film; and the first Tamil space film – they were quite disappointing in execution. In this grand line comes Captain, which I suppose one can call “the first Tamil film to liberally copy from Predator and other Hollywood movies and make a mess of it...

Rajan is one of the most interesting filmmakers working in Tamil/Indian cinema with a strong track record of high concept genre films. After Miruthan, he made Tik Tik Tik, a sort of Indian take on Armageddon swapping a drilling team for a master magician tasked with saving the world from...

ReviewIn comparison to Shakti Soundar Rajan's previous films, the writing in ‘Teddy’ is better but the film still takes liberal leaps with logic. Sowmya RajendranScreengrabShakti Soundar Rajan is fond of introducing genres to Tamil cinema. Apart from claiming to have made the first Tamil bank heist film (Naanayam), he's also made the first Tamil zombie apocalypse film (Miruthan) and the first Tamil space film (Tik Tik Tik). Coming in this line-up is the first Tamil teddy bear film, Teddy. Starring Arya, Sayyeshaa and an overstuffed teddy bear, Teddy is about a young woman, Sree (Sayyeshaa) who turns into a teddy bear and has her human form simultaneously abducted by some evil forces. Arya plays Shiva, a bespectacled genius with a photographic memory. He can not only learn Russian in a jiffy, he's also a seasoned martial arts specialist. He only has 12 friends on Facebook and is leading a content life till he meets Sree.

KollywoodIndia’s first space film looks convincing but is in desperate need of good writing. Sowmya RajendranDirector Shakti Soundar Rajan’s Tik Tik Tik is one of those ambitious projects that you desperately want to like. It’s India’s first space film, after all. As Appu (Arjunan) tells us, everyone remembers who the first man on the moon was, not so much the second and the third. Being first, venturing into something new for the industry has a certain value, and full marks to Tik Tik Tik for trying. Tik Tik Tik is definitely not a Hollywood film. For one, Hollywood is obsessed with saving the world. Shakti Soundar Rajan is modest – his characters just want to save a part of India. But one wishes that this director, who seems to have a real thirst to take Tamil cinema to vera level, would get a writer on board. Someone who can flesh out the characters and write a proper script. At a taut runtime of just over two hours, Tik Tik Tik starts with the problem – a giant asteroid is about to destroy Tamil Nadu and kill over 4 crore people. Who can stop it? The answer, it turns out, is not the scientists or even highly trained military personnel – it’s a Robin Hood-type magician, Vasu (Jayam Ravi), who does his good Samaritan work through a hacker (Arjunan) and a contortionist-helper (Ramesh Thilak). They are the team the army chief (an out-of-sorts Jayaprakash) trusts to prevent this minor apocalypse. Even if physicists around the world are in danger of suffering a seizure at the idea, the audience could have still warmed up to it, if only the screenplay had more on offer. Take the introduction scene for Vasu – after we’re elaborately told about how he landed in prison and what a genius of a magician he is, we see him doing… card tricks and the same ‘magic’ handcuff switches we’re already expecting him to do. This lack of imagination plagues the film throughout. Nivetha Pethuraj plays Swathi, a Lieutenant – but even as she’s training the team, Shakti Soundar Rajan can’t resist putting her in a swimsuit and having the men ogle her. And of course, because she is a woman, Vasu has to chivalrously come to her rescue when the villain targets her. Lieutenant, be damned. It’s heartening, however, that the director thought of including some women in the team of scientists although they do little but gasp. And yay, there’s no cheesy love duet in space. Jayam Ravi’s real life son, Aarav, plays his kid in the film, too. Their relationship and what happens to the son is an important plot point but the director barely invests any time in building their bond on screen. We’re shown real life photos of the father-son and this is supposedly enough to convince the audience about the love between them. Such laziness in scripting costs the film dearly as we just don’t get involved enough with any of the characters. It’s the sets, cinematography and VFX work that really carry Tik Tik Tik through. Given that the budget is nowhere close to Hollywood flicks, the visual effects are impressive and convince us that this unlikely bunch actually is in space. Even if we don’t care about the characters crying, it’s fun to see their tears floating up – how better a film this would have been if the attention to detail had also been extended to the storytelling! D Imman’s Tik Tik Tik in the background score is quite addictive even if the screenplay doesn’t really keep us on tenterhooks about the ticking hands of the clock. The comedy inserted into the script floats around like an object in zero gravity, not landing anywhere and just getting in the way. Aaron Aziz plays a Chinese (the name of the country is beeped out but it’s an easy guess to make) villain who is entrusted with the unenviable task of shouting praise at the Indian hero – “You Indians! You have an astronaut who fights!” he yells in disbelief. I was tempted to take him aside and say, “Actually, that’s a magician who is a Robin Hood, who is now an astronaut, and he is fighting!” Imagine how blown he’d have been. Tik Tik Tik feels like a missed opportunity. It’s neither a proper ‘masala’ film, nor a sophisticated thriller – but despite the fact that it never really takes off, it deserves a consolation prize for trying. Here’s hoping Shakti Soundar Rajan gets some specialists on board the next time and doesn’t attempt to be the magician-director-writer. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew. KollywoodTNM caught up with the director whose next project, touted to be India’s first space film, releases this Friday.Siddarth SrinivasFacebook: Jayam RaviAfter making his debut with Naanayam, director Shakti Soundar Rajan changed focus to a dog-action thriller in Naaigal Jaakirathai, which turned out to be a successful venture for actor Sibiraj. Up next was Miruthan, which introduced the concept of zombies to Tamil cinema. And with his Tik Tik Tik coming out this Friday, Shakti brings yet another novel concept to Kollywood – space films. Tnm caught up with the director during a tea break as he checked the final prints. After Shakti completed Miruthan with Jayam Ravi, talks about Miruthan 2 had surfaced. Reports indicated that the sequel would be a superhero film too, but little did we know that it was going to be a stride into untouched territories – a genuine space adventure. Giving us a sneak peek into the birth of the project, Shakti says, “I had narrated the one-liner to Jayam Ravi two weeks after the release of Miruthan. He immediately agreed to do the film and asked me to begin work in the background. Two months later, Jhabak came on board and only then did we start working on the final script. It took 8 months for us to lock it down, but I’m glad it happened.” Comparisons to Hollywood films When it comes to a space film, comparisons to Hollywood blockbusters are inevitable. Films like Interstellar, Gravity and Apollo 13 have been strongly etched into the minds of movie buffs, who will not lose an opportunity to point out if something didn’t work. Shakti agrees, saying, “If you take the list of original space films (without fantasy) round the world, it’s hard to name even ten. Ridley Scott, before making Prometheus, stated that no director who has made a space film has ever made a second one. The genre is a tough nut to crack, even in Hollywood. In my case, the plot is extremely simple. Writing the whole script was the actual challenge, especially when we were trying to fit it into the commercial format.” Shakti also agrees that Hollywood audiences have better knowledge of thought process and aesthetics, so when it comes to making a Tamil film in such a risky space, the line between spoon-feeding and premise education becomes very thin. So how does one bring such a film to an audience who sometimes may not even understand the contextual meaning of the word ‘space’? “We were very clear that we are not going to make a masala entertainer. There’s no romance in the film, we didn’t need a dance master either. Our focus was to avoid any lagging moments and present a clean and pure single-genre space film that’s damn interesting to watch. If people are able to connect emotionally, they won’t even care where it’s happening. I think everything else automatically falls into place,” he remarks. Picking the right actors The director has an interesting angle when he speaks about the cast of the film. When it would be easy to pick actors for a regular potboiler, what kind of parameters does one set for a film like this? Shakti explains, “This was not about star power and reach. It was clearly about how much they could endure, whether they could go through the physical strain of the film. Nivetha, being a martial artist with a black belt in Taekwondo, was exactly what we needed for the role. We could have cast more popular faces, but I was doubtful of their commitment. I wanted Tik Tik Tik to be at the top of the priority list for every artist involved in the film. That was my criteria.” Budget A project like Tik Tik Tik would require a Hollywood range budget, but Shakti didn’t have that cushion. Ask him about the challenges of making the film within the available budget and he replies without complaining, “I made sure beforehand that we had the budget for whatever was required. We compromised on other things, avoiding stuff that we don’t need in the film. In addition, we shot quickly and made maximum use of call sheets as possible. We have 85 minutes of CGI in the film, we spared no expense on that. To cut down on costs, we put in physical sets and used minimum green mat technology.” Introducing Jayam Ravi’s son Aarav Tik Tik Tik also marks the debut of actor Jayam Ravi’s little son Aarav Ravi as a child artist. According to Shakti, the film dwells on the bond between father and son, as presented in the hit track ‘Kurumba’. “Firstly, I was very happy that Ravi sir had no qualms on playing a father. We auditioned a lot of kids, the young ones weren’t able to perform and in the older ones, there was something missing. I really pushed it on Ravi sir and his wife, they were worried that it would affect his studies. Ultimately, we made it happen by shooting on weekends and off days. We shot a lot of double call sheets, but this kid never got tired. He’s such a natural. I don’t know what they told him at home, but they did a great job.” With such a varied pick of genres in his career so far, it’s interesting to ask Shakti about his ideas and goals for the future. The director says, “I want all my films to be a complete audio-visual experience, something that should be seen in theatres. When people look at the poster of my film, they shouldn’t think of waiting and seeing it on TV or downloading it. Big-screen-worthy is my primary idea.” Even before the release of the film, Shakti proudly says that he has decided what he is going to do next. “It is going to be bigger and much more extravagant than Tik Tik Tik. I’m just doing the back-end work right now, it will take time,” he says. Despite a long delay, the buzz about Tik Tik Tik is still positive. At a favourable runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes, the film seems like a great launch-pad into a genre less trodden in Tamil cinema. KollywoodAccording to industry trackers, over 30 films are waiting to be released. Tnm StaffThe Tamil film industry has come to a screeching halt. The producers’ council first called for a strike over the rates charged by the Digital Service Providers (DSPs). While this protest was a decision taken by all four south Indian film industries, it’s only the Tamil industry which has refused to reconcile with the new terms offered by the DSPs. Following this turn of events, theatre owners in Tamil Nadu announced an indefinite strike starting March 16 over the local body tax and the government’s rules regarding seating, license renewal and theatre maintenance. Only theatres in Chennai and a few screens outside the city are open but the majority are shut. That’s not all. The producers’ council upped the ante by declaring that there will be no shooting schedules from March 16. While some producers who are shooting outside the state have been given permission to do so till March 23, all others have been asked to stop. Several films lined up for the summer are stuck because of the ongoing strikes in the industry, including Rajinikanth's Kaala, which is scheduled for an April 27 release. Currently, it’s exam season, a time when footfalls are low in theatres. However, since the films which were to have released in March have now been pushed, producers will demand that their films be given priority over the scheduled April releases. Already, small producers in the Tamil industry have expressed their discontent over how the producers’ council resolves issues before big film releases at the cost of their films. Here’s a look at some of the summer releases which may have to find new dates. Irumbu Thirai: Originally scheduled to release on March 29, the film stars Vishal, Arjun, and Samantha. Directed by Mithran, the film is reportedly an action flick that deals with technology. A viral clip from the shooting spot of the film, which showed Vishal with piles of currency, did the rounds on social media a while ago. Irumbu Thirai has been produced by Vishal Film Factory and is among the summer’s highly anticipated flicks. Imaikaa Nodigal: Starring Atharvaa, Nayanthara, Raashi Khanna and Anurag Kashyap, this thriller was also supposed to have released towards the end of March. Directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, who made the horror film Demonte Colony, the film has been produced by Cameo Films India. The teaser of Imaikaa Nodigal revealed that Nayanthara would be playing a Cbi officer who is challenged by a ruthless criminal. Tik Tik Tik: India’s first space film, this Jayam Ravi starrer was supposed to release initially for the Republic Day weekend in January. However, the film, which also stars Nivetha Pethuraj and Aaron Aziz, was postponed just two days before its original release date. Directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan, the film was then expected to release in February. However, the team announced that Tik Tik Tik would hit the screens on April 12. The ongoing strike may well throw a spanner in the works and end up in the film getting postponed again. Bhaskar Oru Rascal: A remake of Malayalam director Siddique’s Bhaskar the Rascal, this Arvind Swamy-Amala Paul starrer about two single parents was supposed to release for Pongal this year. However, there were too many films releasing for the much coveted dates and the makers decided to bow out of the race. Having lost out in January, the film was expected to release either in February or March. But considering the long line of films waiting to hit the screens, the film may well be pushed further. Semma: This comedy starring Gv Prakash and Arthana Binu in lead roles has been directed by Valliganth. It was initially expected to release on March 27 but may now be postponed. The song 'Sandalee' from the film has gone on to become a hit. Gv Prakash has also composed the music for the film, apart from acting in it. Pariyerum Perumal: Director Pa Ranjith’s first full length feature film production, this film directed by Mari Selvaraj has Kathir and Anandhi in lead roles. The promos of the film so far have been very quirky, especially the Karuppi song with its stark picturisation. Set in the Tirunelveli-Thoothukudi region, the film has music by Santhosh Narayanan and was expected to release in March. Goli Soda 2: The prequel to the 2015 Vijay Milton film Goli Soda, the film was expected to release on March 29. The film stars Chemban Vinod Jose, Rohini, Subhiksha, Samuthirakani and others, with Gautham Menon playing a supporting role. The first Goli Soda revolved on the lives of four young boys. It did not have a big opening but went on to become a hit and win critical acclaim. Kee: Described as a sci-fic psychological thriller, Kee stars Jiiva, Nikki Galrani and Anaika Soti. The film has been directed by Kalees, who worked with Selvaraghavan as an assistant director. Kee was supposed to release on 28 February but was postponed to March 30. Now, however, there may be further delay in the film hitting the screens. The film is about the dark side of the web and the promos had even mentioned the Blue Whale game, which had created an uproar all around the world. Mercury: Karthik Subbaraj's thriller, which has been promoted as a film without any languages, is supposed to release on April 13. The director, who shot to fame with Pizza, is known for delivering original thrillers and although the teaser of Mercury reminded people of Don't Breathe, it has managed to evoke a lot of curiosity. Starring Prabhu Deva, who appears to be a visually impaired man, Mercury also stars Sananth Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Anish Padman, Shashank and Remya Nambeesan. Industry trackers say that there are over 30 Tamil films waiting to be released. With no resolution in sight for the crisis, the Tamil film industry is likely to be hit badly by the uncertainty.

The director/actor duo of Shakti Soundar Rajan and Jayam Ravi tore up the genre festival circuit last year with their impressive - and very fun - musical survival horror action zombie thriller Miruthan last year, and the team is back at it again and upping the stakes with India's first space adventure film of the modern era. Tik Tik Tik pairs the team once more in what looks like a high concept space thriller that also has the potential to be extremely fun. Tik Tik Tik is story of an impending asteroid strike set to wipe out a large section of south India. In typically filmi (hyperbolic) fashion, the only man who can save them is a "trained magician and escape artist" portrayed by Ravi...

In 2016, director Shakti Soundar Rajan broke new ground in regional Indian cinema by delivering Miruthan, the first zombie film ever made in the Tamil language. Miruthan was a success both at home in Tamil Nadu and abroad where its unique blend of survival horror and south Indian masala was well received at festivals around the world including Fantasia, Neuchatel Fantastic, BiFAN, Sitges, and several more. Not one to rest on his laurels, Rajan is back with yet another pioneering film concept in Indian cinema, a space adventure called Tik Tik Tik. There have been a couple of relatively low budget attempts at this type of science fiction effort, but nothing has ever been hugely successful. With the recent proliferation of decent visual effects around...
