Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is shaping up to be a career-defining role for Cillian Murphy. The longtime Nolan ensemble member stepped into a lead role in one of the auteur’s films for the first time, and his nuanced performance as atomic bomb inventor J. Robert Oppenheimer has made him an early Oscar frontrunner. You could even say that Oppenheimer was a role that Murphy was born to play.
As it turns out, Murphy came close to portraying the infamous nuclear physicist in another project nearly a decade ago. One of the most recent dramatizations of the Manhattan Project was the WGN TV series “Manhattan,” which featured Daniel London in a reoccurring role as Oppenheimer. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Sam Shaw and writer Lila Byock revealed that they cast a wide net when searching for the right actor to play father of the atomic bomb. With a little help from "Barbie," "Oppenheimer" enjoyed a historic opening weekend at the box office, bringing in an impressive $82 million. Such success not only proved that Christopher Nolan is one of the all-time best box office bets, but that original ideas can still triumph despite not being based on long-standing IP. That is, unless you consider J. Robert Oppenheimer a kind of existing IP. The man who created the atomic bomb and changed our world forever was always going to command significant cultural awareness. In that sense, Nolan isn't operating entirely without the aid of audience familiarity.
Still, it's not as though the director's adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's biography, "American Prometheus," was ever going to have the same cultural caché as, say, Batman propelling its box office. Which just makes the success of "Oppenheimer" all the more impressive. And while much of that is...

If you’re making a production with J. Robert Oppenheimer in it, your casting call is likely to include Cillian Murphy.
As it turns out, Murphy — who plays the title role in Universal’s film box office hit — was also considered to play Oppenheimer in a short-lived TV series.
Manhattan, a show on WGN America nine years ago, was set in the Los Alamos, N.M. efforts to develop an atomic bomb. The series primarily centered on Frank Winter (played by John Benjamin Hickey), a physics professor leading the Manhattan Project.
J. Robert Oppenheimer appeared during the first season and in beefed up appearances in Season 2. But that was the last season for the series.
“When we were casting Oppenheimer, we went through a whole series of different ideas,” Lila Byock (The Leftovers), a writer on Manhattan and the wife of series creator Sam Shaw (Castle Rock), told Vanity Fair.

Before Christian Bale landed the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy, the filmmaker screen-tested his “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy. Both men have since admitted that Murphy was never a real threat to steal the part from Bale, and Murphy told GQ Magazine UK in a recent interview that it “was for the best” that Bale won the coveted role over him anyway.
“Yes, I think it was for the best because we got Christian Bale’s performance, which is a stunning interpretation of that role,” Murphy said. “I never considered myself as the right physical specimen for Batman. To me, it was always going to be Christian Bale.”
Nolan didn’t think Murphy was right for the part either, but he still screen-tested him for Batman so that executives at Warner Bros. could see what an amazing actor he was. The director wanted Murphy...

"Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir this show's blood." Hulu has decided to walk away from "Devil in the White City" -- the series adaptation of Erik Larson's 2003 non-fiction historical novel -- after developing it with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio for over two-and-a-half years. Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter all brought word of the new development at the same time. Their sources say that the show's producers, ABC Signature and Paramount Television Studios, are still committed to the project and will be shopping "Devil in the White City" around to other platforms, in the hopes of finding a new home. But as of now, the series is more or less dead.
According to THR, Jude Law ("Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore") and Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear") were last in talks to star in "Devil in the White City," with Matt Ross...

An adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City has been in the works for over a decade. The most recent incarnation was set up at Hulu as a limited series, but after losing leading man Keanu Reeves (John Wick: Chapter 4) and director Todd Field (Tar) last year, it seems that the streaming service has scrapped The Devil in the White City.
The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a visionary architect who sets out to mark history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” that was built in the shadow of the Fair.” THR’s report states that producers had been nearing deals with Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Dumbledore) to star in the...

The series adaptation of “The Devil in the White City” is no longer moving forward at Hulu, Variety has learned.
The series had originally been ordered to series at the streamer in August 2022 after originally being put into development there in 2019. At the time it was ordered, Keanu Reeves was attached to star in one of the lead roles with Todd Field onboard to direct.
However, Variety exclusively reported that Field had dropped out of the show in October, with Reeves also exiting. According to sources, Reeves had signed on to the series due in part to Field’s involvement, but left the show once Field did.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, there are plans to shop the project to other outlets.

The devil was in the details, apparently: Hulu has decided not to move ahead with The Devil in the White City.
The long-gestating limited series was to tell the story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the fair’s shadow.

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

Lila Byock has signed a two-year overall deal with ABC Signature, Variety has learned exclusively.
Byock spent five years on the editorial staff of The New Yorker magazine. She has written for TV shows including “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers” at HBO, “Manhattan” at WGN America, and “Castle Rock” at Hulu.
“Lila is a wildly talented award-winning writer who has literally done it all- from writing for some of our favorite shows of all time to contributing articles to The New Yorker,” said Jonnie Davis, president of ABC Signature. “We’re so excited about the projects she’s already set up at Hulu but even more, that she’s made ABC Signature her exclusive home. She’s fantastic and we feel lucky to have her.”

Lila Byock, who served as a writer and producer on Damon Lindelof’s Emmy-winning “Watchmen” limited series, has a question for Ted Cruz: “What the fuck are you talking about?” Byock was one of many social media users ripping Cruz after the senator evoked “Watchmen” and “Avengers: Endgame” to criticize the left for thinking “people are a disease.” Cruz made the argument on the most recent episode of his “The Verdict” podcast, a video excerpt from which circulated Twitter and earned over one million views in less than 24 hours.
“You talked about inevitable,” Cruz tells co-host Michael Knowles. “I have to say it brought to mind ‘Avengers: Endgame’… what is interesting, and ‘Endgame’ is curious. Have you noticed in many movies how often rabid environmentalists are the bad guys? Whether it’s Thanos, or go to ‘Watchmen’…the view of the left is people are a disease. They buy...

“Watchmen” had no idea how relevant it would become, from correctly foretelling the renewed protests for racial justice in the U.S. to the wide-spread practice of mask wearing.
“It’s eerie, it’s absolutely eerie,” Jean Smart, who was nominated for her role as Laurie Blake on the HBO miniseries on Tuesday, told TheWrap. Damon Lindelof’s adaptation scored 26 total nominations on Tuesday, the most of any program. For Smart, the accolades only underscored the show’s resonance with viewers.
The nine-episode run of “Watchmen” began by going back to the site of one of the ugliest, and mostly untold, moments in American history, the 1921 Tulsa Massacre. It is widely considered to be the country’s single worst incident of racial violence, and one that many, including Smart, weren’t even aware of.

In the wake of declarations by President Donald J. Trump to bring “law and order” to the country, television’s cops are donating to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
With social media turning today into #BlackoutTuesday to amplify the voices of black people, TV actors who have played cops or detectives, including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” actress Stephanie Beatriz and “Blue Bloods” actor Griffin Newman, are urging others to make large donations of their residuals and salaries to the Emergency Response Fund.
Both of their Tweets emphasize urge creatives to donate: “If you currently play a cop? If you make tens of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop?” Beatriz and Newman each pledged over $10,000 to support various organizations.
This has spread to other people associated with cop and law enforcement series. “Law & Order: Svu” writer Celine Robinson gave $5,500. “Castle Rock...

The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.
This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.
Last year, the guild did not line up with Oscar’s screenwriting prizes, awarding Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade in original screenplay and Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? in adapted. Green...

The Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won-penned South Korean class thriller “Parasite” won Best Original Screenplay and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards Saturday night.
The annual awards, which honor the best in film, TV, and radio writing, were handed out at dual ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.
Both “Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” are in the running for Oscars in their respective categories.
“Parasite” bested three Best Original Screenplay nominees up for the Writers Guild Award: “1917,” “Knives Out,” “Marriage Story,” and “Parasite.” The WGA swapped the fifth Oscar-nominated script, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” in favor of a nomination for “Booksmart.”

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.
Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Pain and Glory.” The former is by Quentin Tarantino,...

The true origin of Laurie Blake's Dr. Manhattan dildo on Watchmen has been revealed by HBO.
Long before the HBO TV series, or before Zack Snyder put Jon Osterman on the silver screen, no discussion of Watchmen could possibly be considered complete without someone making a joke about Dr. Manhattan’s enormous, glowing, blue penis and his predilection for nudity. Doctor Manhattan is nude through most of the pages he appears on in Watchmen, the vast majority of the time in a non-sexual context, and that atomic powered dong is always there, as much a part of the book’s timeless iconography as the Comedian’s badge or Rorschach’s mask. It took three episodes, but HBO’s Watchmen did finally show us Dr. Manhattan’s dick, although in the form of an astounding sex toy brandished by Jean Smart’s FBI Agent Laurie Blake in...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Watchmen” Episode 3, “She Was Killed by Space Junk.”]
Damon Lindelof likes his jokes. Since a joke is just a story with a punchline, it should come as no surprise that Lindelof tells his jokes just like he tells the rest of his stories: There’s an intriguing premise, a lengthy middle (with a few curious twists and turns tossed in), and the punchline is often a thinker. He told a great joke, perhaps the greatest I’ve ever heard in a TV drama, during “The Leftovers” Season 2, stretching a knock knock joke from the premiere to the penultimate episode before revealing the sum total of its payoff.
So, like just about everything else in “Watchmen,” when Laurie Blake picks up the telephone to speak with Dr. Manhattan (casting Tba) at the start of Episode 3, “She Was Killed by Space Junk,” it wasn’t simply for her or his amusement. In...

A review of this week’s Watchmen, “She Was Killed By Space Junk,” coming up just as soon as I rule out extremist gophers…
Early in “She Was Killed By Space Junk,” FBI agent Dale Petey(*) gets in trouble with his boss, Farragut, for inserting a page from Rorschach’s infamous journal into a briefing on the Seventh Kavalry. “Is it the 1980s?” Farragut asks dismissively. “Then who gives a shit about Rorschach?”
(*) The man behind Peteypedia, which continues to go into way more of this world’s backstory than the show does.

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

The WGA on Thursday unveiled its nominations for in TV, new media, news, radio/audio and promotional writing for 2018, with writers for Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and NBC’s Saturday Night Live among last year’s winners to make the cut.

SNL returns to the Comedy/Variety sketch series category it won last season, this time facing the likes of the final season for IFC’s Portlandia and Sarah Silverman’s Hulu docuseries I Love You, America. Castle Rock is burning. Not just because of the wildfires raging across the hills that surround the town, either, although their hazy orange glow, reflected in the skies above, gives this new episode — “Harvest” — an appropriately infernal vibe. Consider the opening flashback, in which Henry Deaver seeks treatment for the unexplained ringing in his ears that’s plagued him on and off since he was a teenager. “I guess everyone thinks they grew up in the worst place in the world, huh?” the doc asks with a smile. In the lawyer’s case,...

HBO has put into development an adaptation of the upcoming short story collection “You Know You Want This,” from “Cat Person” author Kristen Roupenian.
“The Leftovers” alums Carly Wray and Lila Byock are attached to write and executive produce the planned anthology series, which will explore the dark, complex and funny connections between gender, sex and power across genres.
Roupenian went viral last year when her short story “Cat Person” was published in The New Yorker. Detailing a new relationship as it blossoms via digital flirtation and eventually sours with an intensely bad sexual encounter, the story blew up on social media for its incisive examination of the gender dynamics of modern-day dating.

Shortly after the story’s success, Roupenian signed a seven-figure book deal with Simon & Schuster imprint Scout Press. “You Know You Want” is scheduled to be published next spring.

HBO has bought for development You Know You Want This, an anthology drama series project based on Kristen Roupenian’s upcoming short story collection from former The Leftovers scribes Carly Wray and Lila Byock.
Written and executive produced by Wray and Byock, You Know You Want This will explore the complex and often dark and funny connections between gender, sex and power across genres. The project falls under Wray’s overall deal with HBO.
Roupenian’s collection will be published in January 2019 by Scout Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Her debut story in the New Yorker, “Cat Person,” a tale about bad dates that sparked conversations about sexual consent and gender dynamics, became the magazine’s second most-read article of 2017. Cat Person is part of the to-be-published collection, but is not included in the deal with HBO.

Manhattan, Season 2, Episode 7, “Behold the Lord High Executioner”
Written by Lila Byock and Vinnie Wilhelm
Directed by Jennifer Getzinger
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Wgn
“His acting has definitely improved.” – Fritz
After last week’s “33” efficiently set the table for the last few episodes of the season, “Behold the Lord High Executioner” goes back and grabs the loose threads of Jim’s storyline and starts to wrap them around his throat. For most of the episode, it plays as a spy thriller worthy of The Americans. Unfortunately, Manhattan‘s writers decide to end the episode by making Jeannie do the dumbest thing in the world just so she can get grotesquely bludgeoned on the head and Jim can become officially unlikable.
One of the best things about Manhattan is its consistently complex portrayals of its ostensible heroes and villains. For instance, Frank is a dick, except for when he...

Manhattan, Season 2, Episode 3, “The Threshold”
Written by Lila Byock and Vinnie Wilhelm
Directed by Andrew Bernstein
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Wgn
“Men always want a woman who understands them, but when they get one, they learn what a burden it is to be known.”—Kitty Oppenheimer
Being known can be a burden if it leads someone to outsmart you, become bored by you, or decide you’re not worth it. However, being known can also lead someone to recognize when you’re not yourself and need another chance. It can lead them to fight for you. To forgive you.
Manhattan‘s third episode of the season, “The Threshold,” begins with a flashback to January 1939, when Liza was locked in the Seneca Falls Sanatorium after the “incident” (suicide attempt) she alluded to in the series premiere. There is a naked woman on the floor and other women are screaming in the background.
