Chicago – Gary Oldman has been generating memorable film portrayals since he broke through in the 1980s. From Sid Vicious (“Sid and Nancy”) to Lee Harvey Oswald (“JFK”) to Jim Gordon (Dark Knight Series), Oldman is a consummate actor. That is expressed in his latest role, as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.”
The title refers to one of the most challenging moments of Churchill’s career. Newly minted as Britain’s prime minister in 1940, he faces the onslaught of Adolf Hitler’s attack on his homeland, including the surrounding of the British troops at Dunkirk. Gary Oldman embodies the pugnacious bulldog that characterized Churchill at the height of his power, including the soaring rhetoric that strengthened the morale of the British people.

dick clark productions announced today that prolific actor, Gary Oldman, will receive the “Hollywood Career Achievement Award” at the 21st Annual “Hollywood Film Awards.” Gary Oldman’s career has spanned over three decades and includes an Oscar nomination, Emmy nomination, SAG nomination, two BAFTA Awards, and countless memorable roles including Sid Vicious (Sid & Nancy), Dracula (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), Sirius Black (Harry Potter franchise), Commissioner Gordon (The Dark Knight series), George Smiley (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), and most recently playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. “Harry Potter” tends to bring out the best in people, but there are always a few Slytherins who have to go and ruin it for everyone else. The latest example came just this week, when a short prequel story J.K. Rowling wrote for charity was stolen. Now she and the West Midlands Police are looking for help finding it: “Please don’t buy this if you’re offered it,” Rowling pleaded on Twitter. “Originally auctioned for @englishpen, the owner supported writers’ freedoms by bidding for it.”

J.K. Rowling cast a spell over the world with her Harry Potter series, and when she released the final book in the series in July of 2007 diehard fans of the boy wizard were desperate for more. The British author has appeased fans over the years with related releases, but there is one piece of writing she is imploring fans not to buy: an 800-word prequel that was written on a notecard for a charity auction in 2008 — and was recently stolen.

J.K. Rowling is warning 'Harry Potter' fans not to shell out any Galleons for a handwritten prequel that fell off the back of a broom ... as in, it was stolen. The burglary happened last month in Birmingham, England at the home of someone who purchased the prequel at a 2008 charity auction for about $40k. It's a pretty cool piece of Potter history -- 800 words written on a postcard that lay out the story of Harry's pop,...

We were baffled last October to learn that Bruce Springsteen wrote a song for Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone, and even more baffled that the film’s studio, WB, turned it down. Sixteen years later, the song is finally available for listening, and it’s a little more understandable why it was never used.
It’s a nice song—Hypable reports that Springsteen wrote it for his son after they read The Sorcerer’s Stone together—but it doesn’t exactly fit with John Williams’ tinkling-magic score for the films, nor does it address anything specific to the story’s plot. Instead, it feels like a message of friendship and support for someone going through hard times—a message Ron and Hermione communicate to Harry consistently through the series—or a parental figure like Dumbledore or Sirius Black telling Harry he’s not alone.

While last year’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was originally pitched to audiences as its own standalone story set in the Wizarding World, the movie itself was chock-full of wonderful Easter eggs and nods to the Harry Potter books and film. In addition to the little details and nods, this first movie made it perfectly clear that the future movies will have more than just passing references. In placing Gellert Grindelwald at the center of this story, they have, for better or worse, linked it strongly to the original Harry Potter lore.
One of the other key ways they acknowledged the Harry Potter franchise was in a seeming romantic interest for Newt Scamander, our quirky protagonist. While walking around his fantastic beast zoo inside his suitcase, Queenie (a psychic), noticed a photo of Zoe Kravitz nearby. Without Newt mentioning it, Queenie instantly knew her name: Leta Lestrange.

Oh, Harry Potter. The franchise that’s launched a thousand careers. Okay, that may be overselling it a bit. However, there’s no doubt that no matter your opinion on the Harry Potter books or the Harry Potter films, they've had an immeasurable impact on pop culture, and while it may not have launched a thousand careers, it definitely launched two healthy ones with Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. A good five-plus years after the final film hit theaters, these two are still as relevant today as they ever were. In addition to the careers the films have launched, there’s also the fact that they were released over the course of an entire decade, after all, and with such a release schedule comes the fact that it’s a film series that’s shaped millions of childhoods.

Movie sequels are big business for Hollywood. Many fans are getting burnt-out on sequels, especially since so many of them are unnecessary. Still, let’s not forget that when they’re done right, sequels can be great. Here are a dozen of the greatest sequels ever made.
12. Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan (1982): Still the best of all the Star Trek films, this excellent sequel corrected everything that went wrong with its disappointing predecessor, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The action, the humor and the character interactions were all excellent. The comparisons to Moby Dick gave it a literary flavor, and Ricardo Montalban was fantastic as the villain, Khan Noonien Singh. The death of Spock was a surprise to long-time fans, even if it didn’t last. This film made the Trek film franchise fun and set the standard for the future films.

What just happened here? Harry Potter grew up within a turn of the page at the end of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and then Daniel Radcliffe got a little salt-and-peppery at the end of the film saga. And now there's a sequel stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. But we'll forever think of the adolescent wizard and his schoolmates at Hogwarts as children. Potter's the boy who lived, after all. So while the series was unfolding, both in books and on the big screen, we had our grown-up crush-crushes on the elders of the franchise, whether a Lupin fan, a moody Mad-Eye girl, a Sirius Black groupie or a loyal disciple of Severus Snape. But now Rowling has...

At first, it seems difficult to envision any actor in the role of Sir Winston Churchill – let alone Gary Oldman. The former U.K Prime Minister was once bestowed with the nickname ‘The British Bulldog’, and that hardly seems to fit with the presence of the actor who delivered the roles of Commissioner Gordon (The Dark Knight Trilogy), Sirius Black (the Harry Potter franchise), Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (The Fifth Element), Dracula (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), Lee Harvey Oswald (JFK), and Sid Vicious (Sid And Nancy). But, this collection of performances shows nothing if not an incredibly vast range, and what we have with Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, is some epic drama, and electrifying speeches.
Sir Winston Churchill has been long regarded, and publicly named, as the Greatest Briton of all time – and with good reason. The economic and foreign policies he spearheaded throughout his career were undoubtedly often problematic,...

"Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling only recently revealed that Harry Potter's godfather, Sirius Black, was born on November 3. Yesterday, in honor of what would've been his 56th birthday, Rowling shared some fan art showing Sirius and James Potter, aka Harry's dad:

J.K. Rowling isn't afraid to play a little dirty, getting fans to tweet support for her Scottish rugby team in exchange for some "Harry Potter" intel. Love your style, Jo, don't ever change!

Sniff. Curse you, Internet! This magic is too strong to fight. A YouTube user named theredsoxfan18 made a video combining "Harry Potter" character deaths with the "Furious 7" song "See You Again" -- the tribute to the late Paul Walker -- and it has fans moaning loader than Myrtle. The 2 minute mashup was posted back in May, but in true World Wide Web style, it took a while for it to go viral, and many of us are only just discovering it now.
The video starts with Dumbledore's voice telling Harry Potter, "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living - and above all, those who live without love." Your emotions may start getting the best of you right there, and things won't get easier after seeing Dobby, James and Lily Potter, Sirius Black, Snape, Lupin, Fred, and our trio of heroes along their journey.

'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' poster. With Daniel Radcliffe. Rupert Grint. Emma Watson. 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' quiz question: Does state-of-the-art CGI equal movie magic? (Oscar Movie Series) Alfonso Cuarón seems like an odd choice for director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third installment in the Harry Potter movie series. That is, if one thinks only of Cuarón's pre-Harry Potter sleeper hit, the François Truffaut-esque Y tu mamá también, while ignoring two of his earlier efforts, the critically acclaimed A Little Princess and the moderately respected Great Expectations. This time around, working with a reported $130 million budget (approx. $163 million in 2015), state-of-the-art special effects, and the Harry Potter franchise, Cuarón surely could do no wrong. At the box office, that is. For although Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is stylistically superior to Chris Columbus' previous work in the series,...

We head back to Hogwarts, and try and sort out the Harry Potter films. Is Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets the best one, then?
This article contains spoilers for the Harry Potter movies.
The Harry Potter films didn’t need to be good.
The books were already a phenomenon. Only Twilight and Dan Brown’s novels have resulted in midnight openings at bookshops across the world in recent years, and when you look at their film adaptations (Angels And Demons grossed nearly $500 million worldwide, despite being Angels And Demons), it’s clear: the Harry Potter films didn’t actually have to try that hard to be a success.

Even before Emma Watson took the stage at the Un to give a speech about feminism, and before the video was shared by everyone you know on Facebook, and everyone was talking about her and whether she should be the face of modern feminism…before all that, she was still our boss ass witch. Throughout all eight Harry Potter films, Watson played Hermione Granger, the female member of the Holy Trinity that also includes Harry and Ron Weasley. Though Harry is ostensibly the hero of the series, considering it’s named after him, Hermione is the ingenious character and the one that saves the day more often than not. Many have pointed this out, but it’s worth saying it explicitly: Hermione Granger is the hero of the Harry Potter series.

It’s the fourth Harry Potter movie, and the darkest yet. Mark looks back at Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire…
Even more than the final book, Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire is the most densely packed story in Jk Rowling's series. Between the release of the first film and this film's November 2005 release date, Rowling's literary saga-in-progress had seen two more novels published, The Order Of The Phoenix in 2003, and The Half-Blood Prince in July 2005 and both took the boy wizard into dark new territory.
Rowling had occasionally intervened in the adaptations in order to point to elements that were essential to the as-yet incomplete story so that the filmmakers didn't cut characters they would need later on, but here was a story with a dozen new characters who were specifically important to this story, which spanned a whopping 600 pages in print.
