For most of her career, Camila Mendes has been known as Veronica Lodge. She portrayed the rich, confident high schooler on The CW’s “Riverdale” for six years, appearing in 136 of the 137 episodes before the series wrapped up last year. And now, she’s ready to put that behind her in order to show the world what else she can do.
“I’m sure I will be typecast — I think people are gonna offer me roles based off things that they’ve already seen me do. So it only’s natural that’s what would happen,” she tells Variety.
Which is part of the reason Mendes is attracted to projects she can also produce, and she’s both the star and an executive producer of “Upgraded,” a new romantic comedy that dropped on Amazon Prime Video’s on Feb. 9. In it, Mendes plays Ana, a young art intern who meets...

The treasure trove of young talent that emerged from The CW’s “Riverdale” is truly astonishing, and Camila Mendes is no exception. Her star power as both an actress in and executive producer of the immediately classic rom-com “Upgraded” takes the New York University alum to new heights.
While Mendes’ former “Riverdale” costars are flying high in their respective lanes, with Cole Sprouse stealing scenes even as a mute zombie in the Diablo Cody-penned “Lisa Frankenstein” to Charles Melton’s haunting, award-winning (yet Oscar-snubbed) performance in “May December,” Mendes has proven her own visionary chops in recent years. The star had a standout role in frothy high school dark comedy “Do Revenge” opposite Maya Hawke, and now holds her own alongside iconic actress Marisa Tomei in “Upgraded.”

It’s quite the feat to craft a satisfying, clever romantic comedy in this cynical day and age, given almost every meet-cute, situational shenanigan and grand gesture has already been put to celluloid. However, “Upgraded,” which initially appears to be a stereotypical rags-to-riches tale centered on a desperate gal’s life drastically improving after telling a white lie to a cute guy, keeps these expected elements fresh and vibrant. Director Carlson Young and screenwriters Christine Lenig, Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts ground sharp, soaring sentiments in a reachable reality, innovatively remixing the genre’s familiar formulas to create their own meaningful and rather endearing movie.

Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) is now back on our screens in the thriller Above Suspicion, directed by Phillip Noyce with the screenplay by Chris Gerolmo. The film is based on the book by Joe Sharkey – the true story of America’s first ever conviction for murder of an FBI agent back in 1988.
Clarke plays Susan Smith, a drug addict and young mother of two who also acts as the film’s narrator, but telling the story from beyond the grave. She is the victim of FBI agent Mark Putnam (played by Jack Huston). This case became a memorable moment in American history and one that should never be forgotten.

Banana Split
Stars: Hannah Marks, Dylan Sprouse, Liana Liberato, Luke Spencer Roberts, Meagan Kimberly Smith, Haley Ramm, Jessica Hecht, Addison Reike, Jacob Batalon | Written by Hannah Marks, Joey Power | Directed by Benjamin Kasulke
April (Hannah Marks) has spent the last two years of high school in a relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse), from first frantic make-out session to final tear-stained breakup. In the aimless summer between graduation and college, the newly single April mends her heartbreak by striking up an unexpected friendship with an unlikely candidate: Nick’s new girlfriend, Clara (Liana Liberato).
With an oddball title like Banana Split I was expecting a quirky, just as oddball rom-com. However what you actually get is a touchy tale of two women who should be enemies, after all they’ve both dated and slept with the same guy, but instead find a common bond that leads to a sweet, tender platonic...

There are a lot of classic ingredients that go into a banana split. So it seems appropriate that “Banana Split” includes all the tasty components of a good, fun, soulfully smart summer-after-senior-year teen flick. It’s got sharp-tongued dialogue and fresh appealing actors who know just how to deliver it. It’s got an anthropological eye for youth culture, with its perpetually evolving fashions and habits and pop references. It nods to the mythology of John Hughes — in fact, it opens with deadpan-cynical April (Hannah Marks) getting hit on by dreamboat Nick (Dylan Sprouse), who looks like if-Brad-Pitt-and-Leonardo-dicaprio-had-a-baby with long blond ’90s Hanson brothers hair, the two high schoolers wasting no time before they make out in a diner booth, which leads to a love montage, encounters with a goofy stoner third-wheel friend, a first fight and, of course, the senior prom. And that’s all in the movie’s first five minutes.

Few genres are as beholden to tropes than the romantic comedy, which has long traded in predictable patterns, both the good and the very bad (pitting so-called friends against each other in service to new relationships). The path to love never did run smooth, but too many love stories seem to delight in running over people on the way to eternal bliss. It’s a trope that’s been used as plot and as a dirty little garnish, always fortifying the most basic and bland of lessons: Romantic love is more important than anything else.
It’s a trope long due for a refresher. One way: jettison the emphasis on romantic love and lean into the value of friendship, a twist that’s been used to great effect in “Booksmart” and “For a Good Time, Call.” Both films placed a premium on the platonic Bff-ships and use the rom-com structure...

The world needs a lot of things right now, and one of them just happens to be easygoing entertainment. So be grateful for “Banana Split,” a charming teen romance that fits neatly into the era of “Booksmart” but also manages to stand solidly on its own.
Cowriter Hannah Marks (“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency”) also stars as April, a high-school senior in a long-term relationship with dim hottie Nick (Dylan Sprouse). Marks, cowriter Joey Power and director Benjamin Kasulke spend about five minutes introducing, capturing and ending this relationship, in a quick but clever montage that both fills us in and keeps us at a distance.
That detachment does leave a nagging hole in the story, because we never have the chance to become invested in this couple. But it’s also a purposeful choice: It soon becomes clear that the filmmakers have something other than romance in mind.

Hannah Marks deserves to be a force in Hollywood. One glimpse at her new movie Banana Split is clear evidence of that. The actress and filmmaker is a complete buzzsaw, mixing charisma, sarcasm, and screen presence to put forward instantly iconic work. Banana Split shows her doing so both in front of the camera as the star, as well as behind it as the co-writer. She’s helped to craft a funny, moving, and real story that immediately and throughly enraptures you. This is something special, plain and simple. Coming to Video On Demand this weekend, you owe it to yourself to make time for this one. The film is a comedy about an unlikely and very unique bond of friendship that grows over the course of a summer. For two years, April (Marks) has been in a relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse), defining her life in the latter parts of high school.

"You guys are perfect for each other, you know that?" This originally premiered in 2018 at the Los Angeles Film Festival, but still hasn't been released just yet. It will finally be available to watch at the end of this month. It may not be wholly revolutionary in both its approach and the material it explores, but Phoenix Forgotten was a lot more fun than a lot of folks might give it credit for, and it completely took me back to my high school days of being obsessed with The X-Files, science fiction, and the question of whether or not we are truly alone in this universe. Phoenix Forgotten does an admirable job of blending fact and fiction, and while there was one plot point that I felt was a little “too convenient,” overall, co-writer/director Justin Barber crafts an intriguing sci-fi-fueled mystery that hooked me from the very beginning. It may not make my list of favorite movies from this year, but Phoenix Forgotten was still an entertaining time nonetheless.

Arriving in theaters this weekend is Phoenix Forgotten, a docu-style sci-fi film co-written and directed by Justin Barber. The film is centered around the Phoenix Lights phenomenon, a weird occurrence that happened back in 1997 which has yet to be explained over 20 years later. Barber’s project interjects a little fiction into the mix, as Phoenix Forgotten is focused on three missing teens who went out searching for the truth behind the mysterious lights that appeared, only to never be heard from again.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Barber, and after we finished geeking out over ’90s sci-fi, we chatted about his experiences working on the project with both his co-writer T.S. Nowlin and his cast (Luke Spencer Roberts, Chelsea Lopez, and Justin Matthews), how his career thus far has prepared him for his very first time helming a narrative feature, and more. Look for Phoenix Forgotten in Us theaters this weekend.

Director Justin Barber tells his own ‘X-Files’ Story inspired by real-life events.
On Thursday, March 13, 1997 a strange event occurred in the nighttime skies of Phoenix, Arizona. According to thousands of eyewitnesses, a triangular formation of lights were seen in the sky. Some reported seeing stationary lights hovering over Phoenix, which was later identified by the Air Force as flares being dropped from an air craft performing exercises at the nearby Barry Goldwater base. But there were other reports of the triangular formation passing over Arizona towards Nevada and these have never been explained. At the time of the event, Arizona governor Fife Symington famously mocked the event, holding a press conference where he had a staff member dress up like an alien. But years later, he admitted to also seeing the event and admitted there was no explanation for it.

"For decades they've been lying to you." Cinelou Films has released a final trailer for sci-fi horror found footage film Phoenix Forgotten, which is set to open in select theaters later this month (on April 21st). We already featured one teaser trailer for this film previously, as it's a very mysterious found footage feature "based on true events" about kids who go to investigate mysterious lights of Phoenix, Arizona and end up disappearing. It's kind of like The Blair Witch Project, but for UFOs and aliens and something like that. The "unseen footage has finally been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition." The cast includes Florence Hartigan, Chelsea Lopez, Justin Matthews, Luke Spencer Roberts; with Wes Ball, T.S. Nowlin, Ridley Scott, Mark Canton, and Courtney Solomon producing. This certainly looks freaky. Here's the second official trailer for Justin Barber's Phoenix Forgotten, direct from YouTube: Based on the shocking,...

A new trailer has surfaced for the upcoming UFO "found footage" thriller Phoenix Forgotten. The film is being produced by Ridley Scott, which is interesting because I never thought I'd see him get involved with a "found footage" film like this. There's obviously something he saw in the movie that attracted him to it, though.
The film is based on the true-life events that occurred on March 13th, 1997 when several mysterious lights appeared over Phoenix, Arizona. The event is known as "The Phoenix Lights," and it's one of the most famous and massive UFO sightings in history.
The movie basically looks like The Blair Witch Project but with students on the hunt for UFOs instead of an evil witch.

"I shouldn't have brought you guys out here." Cinelou Releasing & Freestyle Releasing have unveiled the first trailer for a mysterious, eerie sci-fi horror film titled Phoenix Forgotten, about a group of kids who disappeared from Phoenix, Arizona in 1997. The film is being billed as a Blair Witch-esque found footage thriller about these kids who went into the desert on the night lights were seen above Phoenix. The "unseen footage has finally been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition." The cast includes Florence Hartigan, Chelsea Lopez, Justin Matthews, Luke Spencer Roberts; with Wes Ball, T.S. Nowlin, Ridley Scott, Mark Canton, and Courtney Solomon producing. This definitely looks creepy, and it definitely looks like they want to replicate the Blair Witch concept, but with aliens in Arizona. Have a look. On March 13th, 1997, several mysterious lights appeared over Phoenix, Arizona. The event is known as "The Phoenix Lights," and it's one of the most famous and massive UFO sightings in history. This event serves as the inspiration for the found footage movie Phoenix Forgotten, and today we have a teaser trailer for you to watch.
Ridley Scott is producing the film through his Scott Free production, and it involves the producers behind films such as The Martian, 300, and The Maze Runner, so it's got some pretty heavy Hollywood hitters behind it. It just looks like another found footage type film to me, but who knows, maybe there's something more to it than what we're seeing in this teaser.
