By now, it’s no secret that the cast of Robert Eggers’ “The Northman” pushed their bodies to the limit in their quest to tell a historically accurate Viking story. It seems like everyone who worked on the film has an anecdote about the brutal shoot, but nobody worked themselves harder than Alexander Skarsgård.
The actor had long dreamed of making a Viking movie, and he was not going to let the opportunity to play the warrior prince Amleth go to waste. But acquiring the muscular physique required for nude volcano fights is no easy task, so he enlisted the efforts of celebrity trainer Magnus Lygdback. In a new interview with Variety, Lygdback details his efforts to transform Skarsgård from a Hollywood leading man to a Viking warrior.
To build those massive traps, Skarsgård ate 3,700 calories a day, consuming clean protein every two to three hours to keep his metabolism up.

In Robert Eggers’ new epic “The Northman,” out this weekend, Alexander Skarsgård seeks revenge on a man who has killed both his parents and usurped the throne from his royal father. It’s a noble task, one that sees his character scaling mountains, rowing through tumultuous waters and getting into brutal, primal, combat. Tasked with such body-intensive missions, it makes sense that the 45 year-old actor would need to make some serious physical transformations in preparation for the film — not only to convincingly take on the role of a Nordic Viking but to simply make it through a scene without breaking down from exhaustion.

Of all the images in Robert Eggers’ Viking epic “The Northman,” there’s no sight more jaw-dropping than that of Alexander Skarsgård’s bulging traps. The actor’s shoulders look like two protruding volcanoes ready to erupt. Skarsgård’s muscles are a testament to his work with Magnus Lygdback, the celebrity trainer who helped the actor pack on 20 pounds of muscle and transform into the hulking Viking warrior prince Amleth.
Lygdback, who first worked with Skarsgård on the 2016 adventure film “The Legend of Tarzan,” is both an exercise trainer and a movement coach. Moviegoers might know Lygdback’s work best from M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass,” starring James McAvoy as a man with 24 different personalities. McAvoy’s disturbing body contortions were the result of his work with Lygdback, who similarly helped Skarsgård learn to shape his body so that his trapezius muscles were bulging and defined. Lygdback calls this “postural manipulation.

You could say that Alexander Skarsgård worked his axe off preparing for The Northman. To look the part of a Viking prince in the film, the 45-year-old actor teamed up with Magnus Lygdback, a fitness trainer he had previously worked with while preparing for the titular role in 2016's The Legend of Tarzan, for another body transformation. The intensive body transformation took six months, according to Magus. Still, the trainer says, anyone can look like a Norse warrior with enough hard work. "You don't have to be scared of something that's going to make you healthier and look better," he told E! News in an exclusive interview. "Trust the...

For Gal Gadot, 35, the work of Wonder Woman 1984 (out Dec. 25) started in January 2018 when L.A.-based, Swedish-born trainer Magnus Lygdback was tasked with getting the actress ready to wield the Lasso of Hestia again.
With the physicality of Gadot’s character firmly established in the fight scenes of 2017’s Wonder Women, training for the Cold War era-set sequel wasn’t required to be as intense and demanding. “Both [director] Patty Jenkins and Gal had a vision of how Wonder Woman should look and they didn’t change much,” Lygdback (who did not work with Gadot on the first Wonder ...

What’s a nice Academy Award winner like you doing in an action blockbuster like this? It’s asked as a joke and Alicia Vikander smiles in response, but you're immediately aware that you’re not being nearly as clever as you think you are and that she's just being really polite. She’s been down this avenue of questioning before in regards to her reboot of Tomb Raider, but the good thing is that she doesn’t seem bothered by it at all. Alicia, who took home that Oscar for 2016’s The Danish Girl, actually sees it as a natural progression. "Any actor comes in thinking that if we're going to get the next job, whatever it may be, we’re happy," she tells Life & Style. "I love these kind of action films and to be given the chance to be part of making one has been extremely wonderful.
