Photo: ‘We Broke Up’/Courtesy of Vertical Entertainment The Rom-Com genre has always been a widely accessible and popular subsect of movies, however, that popularity is not always directly correlated to the actual quality of production, itself. Romantic comedies thrive when they have likable, attractive stars with large enough names to get butts in seats based on cast, alone. Usually, you can expect some cheesy shmooze-fest with unoriginal ideas and what could be described as tactless romance. ‘We Broke Up’ is one of those releases that defies all of your expectations upon an initial watch, servicing almost none of the contrived rom-com stereotypes. William Jackson Harper won fans’ hearts (and earned a supporting actor Emmy nomination) as Chidi in “The Good Place.” But now that the NBC comedy has reached the afterlife, the actor is stepping into rom-com leading man status with “We Broke Up.”
Harper, who will next star in HBO Max’s romantic anthology series “Love Life” and has a role on Barry Jenkins’ Amazon limited series “The Underground Railroad,” plays Doug in the new indie relationship comedy from director Jeff Rosenberg. The pair previously collaborated on “The Good Place.”
In the film, Doug and his girlfriend Lori (Aya Cash) have been together for a decade, but when he spontaneously proposes and she vomits in response, the relationship comes to a screeching halt. The one wrinkle, the breakup comes just days before Lori’s little sister’s wedding, where both are expected to attend, so the couple decide to pretend they...

, Jeff Rosenberg’s “We Broke Up” eventually gets around to some pressing questions about the all-or-nothing framework of monogamous relationships — questions that it’s mighty refreshing to see asked in such good faith — but after 70 minutes of contrived plotting and broad caricature, there isn’t much time left for the movie to provide any meaningful answers for itself.
The good news is that most everybody who gives this thing a shot will probably sit through the feather-light first two acts and stick around for the payoff at the end, as the “we” of Rosenberg’s film are played by two actors with a rare and proven talent for mining literary depth from characters that exist between Nissan commercials. That shared gift sparks a chemistry that makes us want Lori (“You’re the Worst” star Aya Cash) and Doug (“The Good Place” breakout William Jackson Harper) to get married from the very first shot,...

Lori throwing up at his feet wasn’t quite the answer Doug expected when he popped the question at the start of “We Broke Up.” Then again, Doug calling it quits on the heels of that reaction wasn’t exactly what Lori imagined either. After all, the pair have been together for 10 good years. Luckily, audiences are in for more pleasant surprises.
In this charming outing — starring Aya Cash as Lori and William Jackson Harper as Doug — each is legitimately aggrieved by the swift turn of events in their relationship. They went from a cruise-controlled 60 to zero so quickly that the film will later revisit (in a cleverly edited montage) what precisely happened.
They are also utterly flummoxed about the rules of disengagement. Although one might hazard that atop that list would be the dictum, “Do not go with your freshly minted ex to a wedding.” But go they do...

Love’s defining moment meets the end of a decade-long relationship in “We Broke Up.” The film’s contrasting views on the subject of romance present a broad picture of what is, could be, and might have been. Jeff Rosenberg, who co-wrote “Broke’ with Laura Jacqmin, highlights the usual tropes while turning them on their collective heads with this creative take on the usual romantic comedies. As a director, Rosenberg relies on his experience with series such as “Veep” to keep timing just right.

EstroGenius 2014 4th Street Theatre 83 E. 4th St., NYC October 2-November 2, 2014
The EstroGenius Festival, currently in its 15th year, spotlights women artists in theater. It is organized into three separate shows -- Andi’s Night, Deb’s Night, and Sarah’s Night -- that each consist of five short plays totaling about an hour and a half per "Night." At the end of a program, audience members can vote for their favorite performer, writer, and director on a ballot included in the program, and votes can also be cast for favorite play for a one-dollar donation per vote. The winning play receives a special encore performance at the end of the festival.
Andi’s Night opens with Snow White Zombie (by Brent Lengel; dir. Sara Stevens), a light, almost fan-fiction-esque imagining of a zombie plague in the land of classic fairy-tale characters. It includes some fun fight choreography and the nice...
