Will Packer Productions and Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios are teaming to develop an untitled project based on Evan Ratliff’s Bloomberg article, “The Fall of the Billionaire Gucci Master.”
The companies won the rights in a highly competitive situation and have set up the project at Universal Pictures.
Ratliff’s article digs into the story of Nigerian Instagram influencer Ramon Abbas. The figure otherwise known as Hushpuppi, or the Billionaire Gucci Master, is alleged to have perfected a simple internet scam that allowed him to launder millions of dollars.
Packer and Abu’s project is described as a globetrotting action thriller — a hybrid of Catch Me If You Can and The Usual Suspects.
Writer discussions are said to be progressing quickly.
Will Packer and James Lopez will produce through their Will Packer Productions, with Abudu producing for EbonyLife.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has put in development Mastermind, a crime drama series based on Evan Ratliff’s critically praised book The Mastermind: Drugs. Empire. Murder. Betrayal., with the Russo brothers’ Agbo Films, Noah Hawley’s 26 Keys and Skybound Entertainment producing. Writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917) is set to pen the adaptation.
Based on Ratliff’s book, Mastermind is the true-life story of Paul Le Roux, an unassuming former programmer who built a sophisticated globe-spanning criminal empire— the sheer volume and diversity of which authorities had never before encountered— until he was taken down by his own lieutenant and the DEA and became one of the biggest criminal informants in DEA and FBI history. The show follows Le Roux’s lieutenants as they compete for his power and affection, institute wild criminal schemes, and examine the nature of good and evil for each other in the process.

Noah Hawley is kind of a big deal in the world of television. Hawley has created two critical hits for FX, Fargo and Legion, in addition to directing episodes and serving as the showrunner for both series.
Joe and Anthony Russo are no strangers to must-see TV, either. You may know them best from directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, as well as the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, but the brothers got their start in television. They directed numerous episodes of the critically acclaimed series Arrested Development, as well as key episodes of Community.
Variety is reporting that FX is now developing a crime drama with Hawley And the Russo brothers serving as executive producers. The Mastermind will be based on the investigative stories of Atavist Magazine co-founder and CEO Evan Ratliff. It will tell the true story of Paul Le Roux, a...
