The bar wasn’t very high to clear, but Lionsgate’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 did manage to break a box office record here in 2024, achieving the highest opening weekend at the domestic box office out of any horror movie released this year… so far. This despite largely negative reviews, once again proving that the horror genre is as review-proof as it comes.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 debuted with $11.83M at the domestic box office in 2,856 locations, just barely topping Blumhouse’s Night Swim to rip the crown off the top of its head.
Here’s the full lineup of domestic opening weekends for horror this year…
The Strangers: Chapter 1 – $11.8 million Night Swim – $11.7 million Abigail – $10.2 million Imaginary – $9.9 million The First Omen – $8.3 million Tarot – $6.5 million Immaculate – $5.3 million Lisa Frankenstein – $3.6 million
For further context and comparison, 2018’s The Strangers: Prey at Night opened to $10.4 million before making $31 million worldwide, a number Chapter 1 may eventually reach.

The first instalment in a new Strangers trilogy arrives in theaters this weekend, and the reviews have been pretty merciless so far, with one critic going so far as to call the home invasion slasher "one of the worst" horror films they've ever seen.
With 53 verdict counted, The Strangers: Chapter 1 currently sits at an abysmal 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.
We're not sure why anyone would have been expecting very much from this after what might honestly go down as the worst trailer of the year (see below), but it's fair to say the majority of critics were less than enthusiastic about what sounds like a beat-by-beat rehash of the original.
Check out some reactions below.
The Strangers Chapter 1 might be one of the worst horror remakes I’ve seen in a long time.
Boring, uninventive, and painfully sterilized. Really makes you wonder why bother remaking this movie if you’re just...

Sixteen years after Bryan Bertino's The Strangers shocked moviegoers, Lionsgate is reintroducing moviegoers to Dollface, Pin-Up Girl, and Scarecrow in The Strangers – Chapter 1, the first film in a new trilogy that brings the movie's masked murderers back to the big screen as they stalk a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) spending the night at a secluded cabin in the woods. Ahead of the film's world premiere in Los Angeles last week, Daily Dead had the chance to talk with lead actors Madelaine Petsch (who is also one of the film's executive producers) and Froy Gutierrez about what attracted them to playing their respective characters, developing a realistic chemistry in a short amount of time, and working with legendary director Renny Harlin.

This article contains major spoilers for "The Strangers: Chapter 1."
The horror genre is no stranger (pun intended) to creatures returning from the dead. After "The Bride of Frankenstein" brought back the Monster in 1935, no major cinematic horror character has lain dormant for too long, with even the unlikeliest of beasties or killers coming back for at least a second go-round or more.
The villains of 2008's "The Strangers" count as one of those unlikely killers, though not because they're difficult to sequelize. On the contrary, the very ethos of the Strangers — that being they kill "because you were home" — is incredibly open-ended and ripe for exploration and expansion in further films. Yet therein lies the rub, as they say, for a large part of what makes "The Strangers" so terrifying is that it's a home invasion movie where absolutely no rationale is given for the tragic fates suffered by the...

The first trailer for the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was released online yesterday afternoon, and Prime Video has now followed-up with a special "Look Inside" featurette spotlighting quite a bit of new footage.
The video takes us behind-the-scenes of the sophomore season of the Lotr prequel series, as the main cast members bring us up to speed on their respective characters.
By far the biggest talking point from the trailer is the return of Sauron, who has now taken his Elven "Annatar" form in an effort to hide out in Eregion. If the show follows the lore, the "Giver of Gifts" will befriend Celebrimbor and aid him in the making of the Nine (that were given to men) and Seven Rings (gifted to the Dwarves) of Power.

Sauron’s rise in Season 2 of “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will begin August 29 when the new installment of Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy series based on J.R.R. Tolkien IP arrives on the streamer. Prime Video released a teaser trailer and behind-the-scenes featurette Monday. Based on parts of Tolkien’s posthumous “The Silmarillion,” the series has a planned arc of five seasons.
What is ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 about?
The drama series takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books with an ensemble cast of familiar faces mixed with new characters. Set in the not-for-long peaceful Second Age of Middle Earth, the show marks a first-time venture into the adaptation of Tolkein’s history of the fabled period. Whether you liked it or not, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power became a hit series for Amazon, and it was expected that the series would be renewed for a second season. The series explored the era of Tolkien’s world before the main series, as well as the story of The Hobbit, expanding the universe we’ve already explored earlier. Now, some of the fans weren’t happy with the series in general, but the series has done fairly well and we are now waiting to see where it heads in the upcoming season. The second season will premiere later this year, and Amazon is slowly heating up for the upcoming premiere, which is what we are going to do with this report as well.

"Darkness will bind them." Here we go again! Prime Video has revealed an epic first teaser for Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series. It's start to launch in late August during the fall - just like Season 1 did back in 2022. The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. For Season 2, as we all know from the finale of Season 1: Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season 1's epic scope and ambition, Season 2 plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness,...

Prime Video has announced that we will get our first look at some footage from the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power tomorrow when the first teaser trailer is released online.
Production has been underway since late 2022 at Bray Studios, just outside London. Season 1 was shot in New Zealand, but the decision was made to change-up location because The UK is "considered more economical and is also where the company is establishing a multi-show hub."
The first season concluded with the reveal that the seemingly benevolent Halbrand was actually Sauron all along. The Dark Lord offered Galadriel the chance to join him once his ruse was discovered, and when she refused, he fled back to the Southlands (soon to be known as Mordor).
It was also heavily implied that "The Stranger" was really Gandalf, but this is yet to be confirmed by actor Daniel Weyman or the showrunners.

We always love a good viral marketing campaign, and with Lionsgate gearing up to release The Strangers: Chapter 1 in theaters on May 17, they’re pulling out all the stops this month.
The three masked slashers from the franchise – known as Pinup Girl, Dollface and the Man in the Mask – have been showing up on home security cameras across the country!
Videos and images posted to Tiktok, Twitter, and even Next Door have been documenting the sightings, one of which is a creepy doorbell cam video of a roommate who was allegedly followed home by the masked trio earlier this month. Another video sees them lurking around outside of a gas station, eventually stopping to look directly into the security camera.
The Strangers were also spotted standing outside the Manhattan Criminal Court House, making for “a strange, slightly unsettling scene,” as one Twitter user perfectly described it.

Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and this past weekend they continued their viral marketing approach to promoting the movie. When the South by Southwest festivals were held in Austin, Texas last month, the Strangers were spotted around the city. When the music and arts festival Coachella was going on in Indio, California, the Strangers showed up there, too. Over the weekend, the Stagecoach Festival – which is described as “country music’s biggest party” was also held in Indio… and the Strangers crashed that party as well. Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and with that date just three weeks away the Motion Picture Association ratings board has announced that they’ve given the film an R rating for “horror violence, language and brief drug use.” That puts it pretty much in line with the ratings to the previous two movies in the Strangers franchise. Released in 2008, The Strangers was rated R for violence/terror and language. The Strangers: Prey at Night followed in 2018 and was rated R for horror violence and terror throughout, and for language.

Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and they’re taking a viral marketing approach to this one. When the South by Southwest festivals were held in Austin, Texas last month, the Strangers were spotted around the city. A video of the Strangers at Coachella can be seen in the embed above, and images of their time at the festival can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Scarecrow, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl show up in the dead of night at the front door of their chosen victims in Lionsgate’s The Strangers – Chapter 1 30-second security footage clip. The studio also unveiled three character posters featuring the creepy mask-wearing strangers.
Chapter 1 stars Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale), Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer), Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), and Ema Horvath (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power). Renny Harlin directed from a screenplay by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, based on The Strangers by Bryan Bertino.
“After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin,” reads Lionsgate’s synopsis. “Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in The Strangers – Chapter 1, the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature film series.

Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and with that date just a month and a half away, they have unveiled a new promo, along with a trio of character posters. The promo is embedded above and is meant to look like security camera footage, with the stranger known as Pin-Up Girl (who doesn’t seem to be able to see through her mask very well) approaching someone’s door. The character posters feature the three strangers; Pin-Up Girl, Dollface, and the Man in the Mask (who is now being referred to as Scarecrow). You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

A young couple fight for their lives in the official trailer for Lionsgate’s The Strangers – Chapter 1. What was supposed to be a relaxing getaway turns into a battle with psycho killers in the prequel to 2008’s The Strangers.
The 2024 horror film stars Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale), Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer), Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), and Ema Horvath (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power). Renny Harlin directed from a screenplay by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, based on The Strangers by Bryan Bertino.

Nearly 16 years after Bryan Bertino's The Strangers shocked cinemas (moments from that movie still linger in my mind rent-free), it's time to "witness how the strangers became the strangers" in the trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 1 ahead of its May 17th theatrical release via Lionsgate.
Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Alan R. Cohen & Alan Freedland and a story by Bryan Bertino (and based on The Strangers written by Bryan Bertino), The Strangers: Chapter 1 stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Guitierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath. The film is produced by Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Alastair Burlingham, and Charlie Dombek.

"Why are you doing this to us?!" "Because you're here." Lionsgate has revealed the first official trailer for a horror sequel titled The Strangers: Chapter 1, arriving in theaters starting this May. It's the next sequel in The Strangers horror series, but it's also the start of a brand new trilogy, sort of a re-imagining but using the same premise of creepy, masked people showing up at a home. Madelaine Petsch & Froy Gutierrez star as a couple who come into contact with the three psychopathic masked strangers while on a roadtrip through Oregon. Serving as the third film in The Strangers series created by Bryan Bertino, it's also the first installment of a new trilogy of standalone sequel films, where Chapter 1 will follow a similar premise to the the first film and takes place in the same continuity as the first two installments. This is directed by action master Renny Harlin,...

Lionsgate has shared the first trailer for Renny Harlin’s prequel slasher. Take a look at The Strangers: Chapter 1 trailer here.
2024 has been a little barren for horror films, but fear not, my friends. Things are looking up.
Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 is heading our way in May and if it captures even a smidge of the atmosphere of the 2008 original, we’re in good company.
The first trailer has just surfaced online for The Strangers: Chapter 1 and you can take a look at it below.
Chapter 1 is the third film in the franchise, following on from Bryan Bertino’s 2008 original film, simply titled The Strangers, and its 2018 sequel, Strangers: Prey At Night.
The trailer showcases the iconic masks worn by the intruders in Bertino’s film. The trailer’s tagline also invites us to “witness how the strangers became the strangers”.

What do you do when they come for you? Beloved horror franchise “The Strangers” is getting a revamp, courtesy of prequel “The Strangers: Chapter 1” starring “Riverdale” alum Madelaine Petsch. Two more sequels are due later this year, all from “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger” director Renny Harlin.
In this first film, Petsch stars as a young woman who is trying to start a new life with her fiancé. Yet, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, the couple become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath co-star.
Sure, it may sound like a run-of-the-mill slasher, but “The Strangers” franchise has a haunting allure, thanks to its creation by filmmaker Bryan Bertino. The director has a “story by” credit for “Chapter 1,” which is helmed by Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Trailer Looks Like a Direct Remake of the 2008 Home Invasion Horror Movie
The first installment in a brand new reboot trilogy from Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is said to be something of a remake of the original 2008 movie, while its sequels – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 – will blaze a new path from there.
Our hope is that the two subsequent movies will allow Renny Harlin to get crazy and inject a little more of his personal filmmaking style into the proceedings, because The Strangers: Chapter 1 indeed does look to be a pretty straight up remake of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic. This first trailer essentially goes through all the familiar beats, ending with a new/lesser version of the most iconic line from Bertino’s movie. “Because you were home” has been replaced with “Because you’re here,” which doesn’t quite have the same punch to it.

Remember "The Strangers"? They're back — in trilogy form. Released in 2008, "The Strangers" is a wildly effective horror pic in which a couple finds themselves targeted at random by a trio of masked killers. Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, the film made great use of sound design and slowly building dread to create a memorable scary movie that went on to become a sleeper hit at the box office. In 2018, we got "The Strangers: Prey At Night," a sequel that followed a similar formula but changed up the atmosphere a bit (it felt like more of a traditional slasher movie than the first film).
Now, we're getting a whole new trilogy, helmed by none other than Renny Harlin, the filmmaker behind "Cliffhanger" and "Deep Blue Sea." The plan is to release all three films in one year, and things are kicking off with "The Strangers: Chapter 1." Don't call it a remake,...

Lock your doors, because Lionsgate has released the trailer for the upcoming horror film “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” set to release on May 17.
The third film in “The Strangers” franchise, which originated with Bryan Bertino’s 2008 film, stars Madelaine Petsch as a woman moving to the Pacific Northwest to start anew with her fiancé (Froy Gutierrez). Their plans go askew when they stay at an AirBnB in Oregon, where they are subject to the torment of three masked strangers that show up at their door.
Other cast members include Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, Richard Brake and Ella Bruccoleri.
“Chapter One” is the first film in a new trilogy directed by Renny Harlin, who has previously helmed “Die Hard 2,” “Cliffhanger” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” among other projects.
The original “Strangers” starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as the targets of masked killers who break into their home.

Yesterday, director Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) and producer Courtney Solomon were on a panel at New York Comic Con to discuss their upcoming trilogy of movies inspired by the 2008 film The Strangers (watch it Here) – and you can find out some of the details that were revealed during that panel at This Link. Lionsgate will be releasing these Strangers movies – which are said to be titled The Strangers: Chapter 1, The Strangers: Chapter 2, and The Strangers: Chapter 3 – to theatres throughout 2024… and coinciding with the panel, they have also released a clip from The Strangers: Chapter 1, along with a couple posters! JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols was also able to sit down for an interview with Harlin before the panel began, so we have that video embedded above. The clip and posters can be found at the bottom of this article.
