Fiona Apple is the go-to songwriter for exorcising your romantic demons, ruing the ones you loved, the ones who didn’t love you back, the ones you pushed away amid yet another freefall of your own design. She’s also the go-to singer for three studio comedy auteurs: Michael Showalter, Judd Apatow, and Paul Feig.
Apple’s songs have featured in three of their films — Apple wrote the original song “Dull Tool” for Apatow’s “This Is 40,” capturing a decades-long marriage at its breaking point. Elsewhere, her epic ball of romantic resignation “Cosmonauts,” off the 2020 album “Fetch the Bolt Cutters,” was also originally meant for that film. Meanwhile, her classic cabaret-inspired love song “Paper Bag,” about having too much emotional baggage to enter into a new relationship she wants “so bad, oh it kills,” featured in Feig’s “Bridesmaids” in a montage of Annie (Kristen Wiig) making cupcakes as...

New York singer-songwriter Cassandra Jenkins is back with “Only One,” the lead single from her new album My Light, My Destroyer.
Opening with the line “Sea sick dawn,” the track is steeped in synth-pop sadness as Jenkins roams around New York City. Check it out below.
“It’s about a Groundhog Day effect, finding yourself in the same situation over and over again, not knowing how to get out of that loop,” Jenkins said of the track. “And in some sense, an unwillingness to break a cycle because you’re blinded by your circumstances.

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” says Linda Martell, a country music pioneer, in the intro to Beyoncé’s “Spaghettii.” “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.” Those two sentences perfectly sum up how Beyoncé has subverted expectations in recent years by spreading her wings beyond pop, hip-hop, and R&b to infuse rock, house, and now country music into her own unique style that ultimately really is just “Beyoncé.”

Mitski recorded a new rendition of “Buffalo Replaced,” off her most recent album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, for Spotify. Like the studio version, the recording features strummed acoustic guitar and Mitski’s delicate lyrics describing an open frontier and the fleeting nature of hope; it’s just a little more raw and up front, and her singing at the end takes centerstage. She also recorded a version of the folk song, “Coyote, My Little Brother,” which Pete Seeger popularized, pushing her voice heavenward in the intro...

Mitski has officially released her cover of Pete Seeger’s “Coyote, My Little Brother” as part of her new contribution to the Spotify Singles series.
This past September, Mitski debuted her version of the song during an intimate show at New York City’s Town Hall. Originally written by American folk singer Peter Lafarge, “Coyote, My Little Brother” first appeared on Lafarge’s 1963 album As Long as the Grass Shall Grow before Seeger took it on for his own LP, Broadsides: Songs and Ballads, one year later.
While introducing “Coyote, My Little Brother” as the final song during her set at Town Hall, Mitski praised Seeger for his environmental work in the Hudson Valley. “Bless him,” she said, before gloomily admitting that Seeger’s efforts mostly went for naught.

As he’s always wont to do, Barack Obama has been trickling out his favorite bits of culture from 2023 over the past few weeks, and he’s finally shared his list of favorite songs.
The playlist is vintage Obama-core — a wide-ranging, always tasteful, potentially focus-grouped assortment of music from across the globe. A mix of hits, critical darlings, and plenty of songs that make you wonder, “Ok, which intern, or daughter, put him onto that?” (Not that there’s anything wrong with any of that — there’s plenty of...

It’s hard to think of 2023 in music and not mention the success of Barbie, Karol G’s international takeover, the rise of singer-songwriter-dancer-engineer Victoria Monét and the launch of future pop star Tyla.
And then there’s Sza and Beyoncé. They released mind-blowing albums last year, but they didn’t snooze in 2023.
And speaking of snooze, here are 10 favorite songs of the year.
1. Sza, “Snooze”
“Ain’t a home when you’re not here/Hard to grow when you’re not here,” Sza sings on this modern love song currently uniting the entire world. Babies and young children are cutely singing the melody (and in harmony!). Boys and men are proudly singing the lyrics written solely by a female artist. And the aunties approve of its R&b authenticity. With some production assists from living legend Babyface and legend-in-the-making Leon Thomas, Sza’s confessional track is poignant and perfect.

Speaking of which: Sixty-five years after its release, Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is finally at Number One. In another 65 years, “Cruel Summer” will probably still be in the Top 10. If we’re lucky, Jason Aldean’s “Try...

The project was announced today by producers Level Forward, Tony-winning Tina star Adrienne Warren, Lawryn Lacroix, and Tony Award-winning producer Mara Isaacs (Hadestown).

The Hollywood Reporter named its top 25 Platinum Players in music, and below some of the top-performing acts — from Kim Petras to Coco Jones — share their favorite films of the year, top album of the year and say how they hope the music industry will change for the better.
What Is Your Favorite Song Of Album Of The Year?
Kim Petras: Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd by Lana del Rey.
Boygenius: The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We by Mitski.
Coco Jones: Renaissance by Beyoncé.
Noah Kahan: My favorite song this year would have to be Hozier’s “Unknown/Nth” from Unreal Unearth. It’s just a beautiful song, so expressive. Exclusive: S.S. Rajamouli is currently assembling a production team for a new movie about the birth and rise of Indian Cinema.
Rajamouli, whose Rrr racked up an Oscar win and over $166M WW, is not directing, we understand. At $130M, Rrr is the third highest grossing movie in Indian cinema. Rajamouli is ‘presenting’ which over in India is a bigger title than producer on a film, though akin to how Hollywood views the role of a producer.
The new biopic about Indian Cinema is not yet titled, though reps for Rajamouli promise it’s a “magnum opus telling” which will be told “on a huge scale and canvas.”
Rrr followed the fictitious telling of two legendary revolutionaries and their journey away from home before they started fighting for their country in the 1920s.
Rrr won an original song Oscar this past spring for its single “Naatu Naatu” written by M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose.

Vagabon wanted her new album, "Sorry I Haven't Called," to provide some relief for people after a few hard years. In order to do that, the artist, whose real name is Laetitia Tamko, decided to retreat from the world to write it.
"I have friends who live in Germany, and they told me about this house in the countryside of Germany. Being the dreamer that I am, I was like, 'Hmm, I can see myself in a house in the countryside of Germany. That sounds nice,'" she tells Popsugar. "For me to sit down and make an album - I've only made three albums, but it seems to always start with a little nugget of a dreamlike thing like that that can get my fires going."
The strategy worked, and the retreat ignited her creativity. The result is her most electric, expansive album yet.

Mitski’s seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has arrived. Stream the album below. Update: To coincide with the album’s release, Mitski has also shared a new video for “My Love Mine All Mine.”
Spanning 11 tracks, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We features many of the things you would expect from a Mitski album, like production from longtime-collaborator, Patrick Hyland, thoughtful songwriting, and brilliant moments of catharsis. Yet, focusing on the inescapable contradiction of love and isolation, she reaches some of her most profound musings, with impactful arrangements to match the mood.
In his review, Consequence’s Jonah Krueger celebrated the project for being Mitski’s “most comforting, hopeful yet.” Explaining that she finds solace in the heartache of loss, Krueger writes that the overarching theme of the album endows the listener with invaluable emotional tools, and looks past sorrow to find strength.

“I don’t like my mind/I don’t like being left alone in a room,” Mitski sings on her seventh album, her voice honeyed and rich despite her distress. “Please don’t take … this job from me.” We could read this as your average American workaholic, consumed by the grind. But it’s hard not to hear those words as autobiographical — after all, this is the same woman who decided to quit music, then came back, drawn to it like the tides to the moon. As she told Rolling...

Bob Boilen, the founder of NPR’s All Songs Considered and the popular Tiny Desk Concert series, has announced his retirement from the organization after over three decades.
“After 35 years, I am leaving NPR,” Boilen tweeted. “I’ve had the thrill of creating Tiny Desk Concerts, All Songs Considered, directing All Things Considered for 18 years and so much more. I love the people I’ve worked with, but it’s time to find new challenges. thank you for listening/watching.”
According to NPR journalist Lars Gotrich, Boilen’s last day will be October 2nd. Boilen — who served as director for All Things Considered, NPR’s premier news program, from 1989 to 2007 — started All Songs Considered, its online music show, in 2000. Mitski has a soft spot for Mexico City. In 2022, her last two live performances of the year were there, one being a stop on her Laurel Hell tour and the other being a festival set at Corona Capital. On Friday, the singer will release her seventh studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, but because her love for Mexico City runs so deep, those who got tickets to the intimate show she held there on Monday have already heard it.

With last year’s Laurel Hell, Mitski elaborated on the eclectic, ’80s-influenced sounds of 2018’s Be the Cowboy, synthesizing the lessons she’d learned from her earlier work about multi-instrumental songwriting and thematic cohesiveness. “According to that pattern,” Mitski told Apple Music at the time, “the next thing I’ll do will be completely different.” Indeed, her seventh album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, delivers on that promise, adapting her poignant lyricism to the acoustic strings and traditionally rural setting of country music.
As always, Mitski’s music aches with longing, and by leaning into a bleak vision of the heartland, she unlocks a gothic sense of dread. “Bug Like an Angel” opens the album with the gory image of a bug stuck to the bottom of a glass. Accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, Mitski sounds like a lonesome country balladeer, or the drinker on the...

Just as music is a big part of The Summer I Turned Pretty, the Amazon Prime Video original series’ star, Lola Tung, used it to get into character. What the actor listened to for a fast way to get into Isabel “Belly” Conklin’s “headspace” and what she looked for in songs.

Kim Petras’s “You Can’t Do Better” might’ve blared through the speakers as Belly sang along on the way to Cousins with her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman), and mother Laurel (Jackie Chung) in the Tsitp premiere episode. However, the track may not have made the cut for season 2 based on Tung’s description of her own Belly playlist that helped her get into character.
“It was a lot of slightly more emotional songs — songs that felt nostalgic,” she told The New York Times.

Mitski has unveiled “Star” and “Heaven,” two new songs from her forthcoming album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. She also unveiled a string of European tour dates for October.
According to a press release, both “Star” and “Heaven” were written a few years ago, and have been biding their time, waiting to be adapted and encompassed into a larger work. As The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We began coming together, that moment finally arrived — Mitski teamed up with arranger and conductor Drew Erickson, the two recruited a full orchestra, and versions of both songs were cut, with a sense of openness and subtle craftsmanship that perfectly fits into the album’s sound.

Fresh off his appearance on IndieWire’s Best Performances of the 80s list, David Byrne will be bringing down the house — hopefully packed movie theater houses.
A24 is gearing up for its re-release of Jonathan Demme’s adored Talking Heads concert documentary “Stop Making Sense” at TIFF and in a Global IMAX Live event on September 11, with the film rolling out to the general public in the weeks after. Watch the trailer below.
The distributor had previously released a 40-second teaser that showed Byrne picking up his laundry and getting back… the big suit! The comically oversized, boxy suit the buttoned-down singer/songwriter wears during the latter part of the concert during songs like “Girlfriend Is Better.” In that teaser, he put it on again and did his trademark wiggle, the awkward-chic moves that, along with many other things, have endeared him to audiences the past four decades.

The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, which Mitski describes in a press release as her “most American album,” pulls from a vast pool of influences, including spaghetti western soundtracks, Arthur Russell, Igor Stravinsky, and more. To help flesh it out, she employed a full orchestra and a 17-person choir, working again with her longtime producer Patrick Hyland.
