We take a look at Sailor Moon's glorious history of Lgbtq+ visiblity and the mark it left on a generation.
At last we’ve come to it. The final volume of the classic Sailor Moon anime from the '90s has been released by Viz Media on DVD and Blu-ray, and while we’ll cover Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Vol. 2 in a minute, there is a discussion at hand that this final season of the show in particular makes especially relevant: the inherent and indomitable queerness of Sailor Moon.
Never a show that shied away from Lgbtq+ representation, even if some of it may be slightly problematic by today’s standards, at the time Sailor Moon busted the door open in the area of sexuality and gender for a lot of fans. Many hadn’t seen characters in the media, especially in animation, that represented them.

We take a look at the episodes that made Disney's Gargoyles such a classic!
Disney’s Gargoyles is one of the seminal works of serialized American animation. While ostensibly a cult classic, having never reached the mainstream popularity of contemporaries like the beloved '90s X-Men cartoon and Batman: The Animated Series, it nonetheless left a mark on a generation with its intricate, sprawling mythology, complex characters, and smart writing. Running for two seasons and a total of 65 episodes, the series dealt with timely themes while stoking a love of noir, various world mythologies, and Shakespeare in the hearts of millions of kids who might have otherwise never given them the time of day.
While for years you had to either have a serious VHS collection of episodes taped off TV or catch the reruns on The Disney Channel, the full 65-episode run of Gargoyles...

We sit down with five cast members from the final season of Sailor Moon and get a peek behind the curtain.
You want Sailor Moon cast interviews? Oh, you’re gonna get ‘em, because we got a chance to speak with the Sailor Guardians from the original Season 1 cast all the way up through Sailor Stars, the final season of Sailor Moon, the first volume of which is now available from Viz Media.
In this free-for-all, we’ve got five Sailors on the docket. In accordance with the Sailors’ debut queue, we start with Cristina Vee, who has rocked a pair of scarlet high heels for the last five years as Sailor Mars.
Den Of Geek: You were part of the original power trio that started it all, debuting only ten episodes into a 200-episode run. What has it been like experiencing the cast grow and change over the years?...

The name and release info for the upcoming Sailor Moon theatrical films have been announced!
Once again, we come to the last day of the sixth month -- June 30th -- known to Moonies far and wide as the birthday of our lunar queen and her pink-haired daughter, and... you know... I should know by now not to be surprised when some huge piece of Sailor Moon news comes our way on this holiest of days, but by Serenity, they got me again!
Two years ago today, Sailor Moon Crystal’s creative team announced that the fourth arc of the manga, “Dream,” would not be adapted into a fourth season of Sailor Moon Crystal, but rather two feature films. This naturally raised a lot questions about how faithfully it would be able to adapt the arc on the matter of running time alone, but we did...

The villains of Sailor Moon season 5 have been cast!
When we covered Viz Media’s announcement of the new voice talent joining the Sailor Moon family, we couldn’t help but note a few absences. While we got the casting info for the Sailor Starlights, Sailor Galaxia, and Chibi-Chibi, there was nothing on Galaxia’s henchwomen, the Sailor Animamates.
Well, ask and you shall receive!
It’s been just barely a week, and we now know who will portray these animal/metal-themed villains of Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars.
First up is Katie Leigh as Sailor Iron Mouse, the first agent of Shadow Galactica to face off with the Sailor Guardians, whose childlike cuteness betrays a nasty mean streak. Leigh hasa few anime credits to her name, but her voice-over career goes waaay back, and English-speaking audiences would probably know her best as Alex from Totally Spies,...

The new voices joining up for the fifth and final season of Sailor Moon have finally been revealed.
Sailor Stars, the fifth and final season of Sailor Moon, is kind of a big deal. The only season of the show never before dubbed into English due to its radical assertion that genderfluid people, you know, exist, it’s long been a subject of controversy amongst pearl-clutching moral guardians. Literally no one else cared. Pretty much everyone else loves the Sailor Starlights, this season’s rival/pseudo-antagonist faction to the Sailor Guardians, just as Tuxedo Mask and the Outers were in their introductory seasons.
And what’s not to love? A boy band that transforms into a trio of young women dressed up like cosmic, superpowered dominatrixes… dominatrices?... okay, maybe if I squint I can kind of see how some people might feel a little weird about...

We consider where the Sailor Moon movies fit within the franchise as a whole.
The Sailor Moon movies are an interesting case. Three in number, though not what one could structurally or stylistically consider a trilogy, each is named for a season of the anime and loosely based on that season. Very loosely based. In fact, since the release of these films, moonies have debated their exact place in the continuity and how they fit into the Sailor Moon mythos.
The short answer is, well… they don’t.
One film is based on a manga side story, another on some design sketches, and the third on the aesthetic of probably the most maligned arc of the anime. None of the films even attempt to conform to their associated seasons aside from the heroes’ magical items, transformations, and attacks, and perhaps some thematic imagery, nor do they...

As 2018 draws to a close, we examine the year's last bits of Sailor Moon news!
With only a few weeks left in 2018, we’ve stumbled upon some eleventh hour riches on the Sailor Moon news front. Before we ring in 2019, let’s take a look at what we have to look forward to.
First on the docket is the release of Sailor Moon SuperS Vol. 2, which dropped on November 13th. In the second half of this somewhat polarizing season of the classic series, we continue to follow the Sailor Guardians’ fight against the eerie and bizarre Dead Moon Circus, who are searching people’s dreams for the elusive Pegasus (Chris Niosi). Despite having formed a close bond with Sailor Chibi Moon (Sandy Fox), Pegasus is still holding back some secrets. As the plot thickens, new villains appear, including the distubingly sexualized despite their age Amazoness Quartet...

In the mood for a rewatch of the '90s X-Men animated series? Of course you are! Here's a list of the must-see episodes.
X-Men: The Animated Series. Few cartoon show from this era are held in as high regard. It was pretty much X-Men, Batman: The Animated Series, and Gargoyles. Everything else was simply beneath them.
Watch everything Marvel and more with a Free Disney+ Trial, right here!
Which is not to say X-Men didn’t have its problems. In fact, when people remember it fondly, they’re mostly remembering Seasons 1-3, but thanks to the character designs available at the time the series was in development, X-Men made the early '90s relaunch and the designs made famous by Jim Lee the most iconic look for the mutant heroes. Just watching these episodes takes me right back to junior high and high school, when...

It wasn't easy, but we picked the best Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes. We used some rigorous criteria. Well, we tried to.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is not the type of show that many people have lukewarm opinions about, thus any kind of ranking list is going to inspire some pretty fierce debate. Like any great work of art, Buffy operates on a lot of different levels, means different things to different people, and a decent argument can be made for various points of view on what its stronger and weaker elements are.
I start with this disclaimer because there will invariably be someone who won’t see their favorite episode anywhere on this list and will wonder why. Well, it’s partially because I’m human and thus subject to my own point of view and biases, and that’s going to inform whatever’s written here.

Ever notice the similarities between the events and characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sailor Moon? You will now!
A sweet, somewhat ditzy blonde teenager reluctantly accepts her birthright, becoming a champion of good destined to defend mankind from unspeakable supernatural forces, and despite her desire to be an ordinary girl, she rises above her immature foibles in crisis after crisis, becoming a true hero for whom her own epic series is named.
To what popular, trailblazing heroine of the '90s does this description apply? Most Americans’ first answer would be Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and they wouldn’t be wrong. Buffy was an instrumental figure in the Girl Power movement of the late '90s, inspiring countless writers to not only introduce stronger, more complex female characters, but place them at the center of their narratives. Indeed, every word of that description fits Buffy to a T,...
