There’s gracefully admitting a mistake, and then there’s what the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office did in late February: attacking Alec Baldwin’s lawyers for pointing out that one of the charges against him was unconstitutional.
The problem with the charge was clear. It was based on a sentencing enhancement enacted after the Rust shooting — an enhancement that required a minimum five-year sentence if a firearm was discharged in the commission of a felony.
The prosecutors decided to use this updated enhancement against Mr. Baldwin. Then, for some reason, they promptly went on CNN and Fox News to talk about it, before the charge had even issued.
There was just one problem: This charge violated the Constitution’s ex post facto rule. That’s the rule that says you can’t be charged with a crime if what you did wasn’t a crime at the time you did it.

Lizzo recently stopped by Sesame Street, where she was gifted a one-of-a-kind flute made of cookies by her new friend Elmo. With Cookie Monster roaming around, it was only a matter of time before the instrument met its demise, and that’s exactly what happened when the blue furball of fury came by to say hello.
“I’ve played a lot of instruments, but I’ve never played a cookie before,” Lizzo said after being handed the flute. “May I?” The virtuoso got Elmo dancing with a catchy groove before Cookie Monster caught wind of the music.
True to nature, Cookie Monster couldn’t help but devour the flute once it was right in front of him. “That was the one and only cookie flute,” Lizzo dejectedly said after he weaseled his way into eating it as a tasty snack. “I know, how can me not eat it? What an honor,...

Lizzo took to the stage of Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena for the latest stop on her The Special Tour on Friday, and had some words to share about comments being made about her in the media.
Speaking to the crowd, Lizzo appeared to reference Kanye West’s appearance this week on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight”, when he brought up the “About Damn Time” singer to critique the body-positive movement, calling the media’s championing of her weight “demonic” and comparable to “genocide of the Black race.”

Lizzo must be exhausted. Each week she’s the subject of a new uproar, and last week’s was truly one for the books.
After years of establishing her flute skills, playing the instrument is one of her big party tricks. So of course the Library of Congress took the opportunity to invite Lizzo to not only look at their collection of 1,700 flutes but to also play a crystal flute owned by James Madison. The flute was one of the few artifacts retained from his tenure as president due to...

Saturday Night Live Weekend Update co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che were at it again Saturday, addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s latest moves, Lizzo’s flute playing, and Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker’s agenda should he win office.
“In a speech after annexing sections of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin attacked the U.S. for satanism and denounced the many genders in fashion in the West. It was a hateful, unhinged speech which has many Americans calling him electable,” Jost quipped.
“The U.S. Embassy in Moscow is urging all...

Bill Plante, a longtime CBS White House correspondent who spent 52 years with the network in various capacities, died on Wednesday, CBS News announced. He was 88.
According to CBS News, Plante’s family say he died of respiratory failure.
“He was brilliant, as a reporter and as a human being. There wasn’t anything Bill didn’t excel at in our profession: he was a gifted writer, a first-class deadline maker and a breaker of major stories. He’ll be remembered for his reports from the White House lawn, his booming voice that presidents always answered and his kind heart,” 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl said. Stahl and Plante covered the White House together for a decade, CBS said.

The first look at the live-action feature of Hamilton dropped tonight during the ESPYs. The hip hop musical about American Founding father Alexander Hamilton debuts on Disney+ on July 3.
As Deadline first told you, Disney shelled out $75M for the global rights to the movie, beating a number of rival studio suitors. Soon after the pic’s acquisition, Disney decided to send the movie to its streaming service instead of booking the movie in cinemas; the pic’s original theatrical release date being Oct. 15, 2021. Great timing, because the bulk of the major exhibition circuits aren’t opening until July 10, and further on in the month as they prepare for Disney’s Mulan on July 24 and Warner Bros.’ Tenet on July 31. And there’s a millions views that Hamilton will score, just you wait, just you wait.

Washington — President Trump put a nauseating new spin on Bible-bangin’ when he ordered flash grenades and tear gas to be lobbed at peaceful protesters outside of the White House so he could take a picture holding a Bible in front of a church. He has proven himself a Tartuffe of the highest order.
Amid the stampede, still ringing in my ears is the voice that cried out, to nobody in particular, that “There are kids here!” It was 6:30 p.m. on a gorgeous Monday. Surely, Trump’s base...

Your July calendar has just been filled. Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda announced today that the filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton will be premiering on Disney+ on July 3rd. Yes, that is just in time for American Independence Day. And, yes, this is the only acceptable way to celebrate the holiday this year.
Disney is “fast-tracking” the premiere, which was scheduled to be a theatrical release in October 2021. No doubt the “social distancing” measures brought about by the global Covid-19 pandemic has changed the original plan, as it has done for so many things. It’s nice to have things to look forward to.
It’s only a matter of time…

On Sunday, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) equated President Donald Trump’s malfeasance with another disgraced president who was facing impeachment, Richard Nixon, but instead on a global scale.
Klobuchar told Meet the Press host Chuck Todd that behavior like what Trump is accused of is what motivated America’s Founding Fathers to include impeachment in the constitution.
“The first obligation is a constitutional one. We don’t have a choice,” Klobuchar said of moving ahead with articles of impeachment. The candidate continued, “This is something where the Founding Fathers themselves,...
