Between its swivel chairs, Steals and duet-or-die Battles, The Voice has always been as much about gimmickry as it has singing. So on paper, the Block, installed in Season 14, made sense as a fresh, fun novelty. But in practice, it didn’t work.
Yes, the new button, which allowed the coaches to choose a rival to block from being chosen by a certain contestant during the Blind Auditions, afforded Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Alicia Keys and first-timer Kelly Clarkson additional chances to playfully spar. And yes, that’s inevitably a good time.

Monday night on “The Voice,” Kaleb Lee and Justin Kilgore represented Team Kelly Clarkson during the first knockout round episode of Season 14. Kaleb sang Zac Brown Band‘s “Free,” while Justin took on Billy Joel‘s “Shameless.” After both country artists performed Kelly chose to save Kaleb for her team, thereby eliminating Justin from the reality TV singing competition. Your days are numbered, Jaron Strom. The Voice on Monday began its Season 14 Knockouts, aka the rounds designed to discharge the last of the coaches’ cannon fodder prior to the Playoffs. So, before sitting down and tuning in, I was thinking that Jaron would soon be jettisoned from Team Blake, Gary Edwards would be dropped from Team Adam, Dallas Caroline’s nerves would at last be settled by her elimination from Team Alicia, and Jamella would get cut from Team Kelly (probably in a montage like both her Blind Audition and her Battle, poor thing!). Who actually got knocked out when past winners Jordan Smith,...

Season 14 of “The Voice” aired the third of four episodes devoted to the battle round of the competition on March 26. With the first two episodes last week having been dominated by artists from teams coached by Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys, this installment was focused primarily on those mentored by Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
At this stage, each coach pits pairs of artists against each other and has them sing the same song for survival. After deciding which contender in each battle to take to the knockout round, the other coaches can steal the loser for their teams (save for Levine who has used his two steals already). At rehearsals, the coaches had fellow artists on hand to offer advice: Clarkson turned to Hailee Steinfeld, Keys was counseled by Shawn Mendes, Levine had Julie Michaels by his side, and Shelton brought in Trace Adkins.

Each of these initial teams is comprised of a dozen artists from around the country who inspired at least one coach to hit their button and turn during the blind auditions. Next up are the battle rounds, where the coaches will pit pairs of artists against each other to determine who will advance and who’ll be sent home. It’s at this stage that the judges are allowed to steal three artists from their rival coaches.

We need to talk about Adam Levine. And I don’t mean the Jimmy Buffett-style Hawaiian shirt he’s worn throughout The Voice’s Season 14 Blind Auditions (I’m with Johnny Bliss — I kinda like it) or even the porn ‘stache that NBC promo pics have warned that he’s going to be sporting shortly (see photo below).
I’m talking about his team. It is, in short, a mess. Going into Night 5 of the Blinds, only two of his singers whose full auditions aired got B’s from me; the other three were in the C range. And obviously,...

This season on “The Voice,” new coach Kelly Clarkson is not shy about bringing up the fact that she’d be the best mentor because she’s been through a similar process on “American Idol.” While Clarkson is in the reality TV record books for being the first-ever “American Idol” winner back in 2002, she’s not the only alum to show up on “The Voice.” Last season Jennifer Hudson joined the NBC singing competition after coming in seventh place on “American idol” in 2004. Which “American Idol” superstar is the better “The Voice” coach? Vote now in our poll below.

Before signing on to “The Voice” Clarkson was rumored to be a contender to judge ABC’s revival of “American Idol,” which debuts Sunday, March 11. Instead, Clarkson joined “The Voice” Season 14 alongside longtime coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton and second-timer Alicia Keys.

Season 14 of “The Voice” threw a new twist at the coaches — Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys — by allowing each of them one opportunity to block another from getting an artist to join their team. So far Levine, Shelton and Keys have all used their blocks, meaning Clarkson is the only coach still with her block in play as we head into the final week of blind auditions. What do You think of the controversial block twist? Vote now in our poll below.

“Do you see what these fools did?” Clarkson asked Latin artist Johnny Bliss during Monday’s blind auditions after learning she’d been blocked by Levine. “It’s red, I’m blocked! It’s wrong. I can’t believe I’m looking at this ‘blocked,’ Adam!”
“I blocked Kelly,” Levine explained to Bliss.

Even before The Voice’s Season 14 Blind Auditions continued on Monday, a Top 12 was forming. Maybe only in my mind/our minds, but still… That counts… er, right? Pryor “I Eat Gravel for Breakfast” Baird was on the list, as was Jaclyn “I’m 98.5 Percent Pixie Dust” Lovey and Kyla Jade, whose Blind Audition I suspect only hinted at what she had to offer. (For the moment, I’m also reserving spots for Kelsea Johnson, Justin Kilgore, Brynn Cartelli and the one-man charm machine that is Britton Buchanan.) And, after Night 3 of the Blinds, I added another couple of names...

Monday night on NBC, 30-year-old Justin Kilgore sang Chris Young‘s “Tomorrow” during the blind auditions of “The Voice” Season 14. Justin closed out the season premiere, proving that producers were banking on the Texas country singer to strike a chord with fans. All four coaches — new judge Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton — turned their chairs around for Justin, but he ultimately went with Clarkson. Can Justin make it all the way to the Season 14 live shows? Watch “The Voice” blind audition performance video above.

One of Justin’s biggest singing inspirations is Reba McEntire, which gave Clarkson the edge because McEntire is her mother-in-law. “Do you know Reba McEntire?” Clarkson asked the other coaches while doing a “drop it like it’s hot” dance. “Her grandchildren are my children, I’m just sayin’. I’ll call her.
