Ever since there have been movies, there have been movie stars – and becoming one of the world’s greatest actors involves being able to be many things at once. For one, you have to be able to act – to really inhabit a character’s deepest emotions, to step into their skin so that the words on the page come across as lived and felt. Plus, you have to be able to take that technical mastery and apply it across multiple genres, from quiet character dramas to epic action-packed blockbusters. And on top of that, you have to have that thing that can’t really be learned, or taught – a charisma, a command of the camera, an energy that enlivens even the most stellar script, and makes audiences flock to the multiplex in their droves.

Nothing screams "must-see" quite like a new Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaboration. They're the dream duo of modern American cinema, the closest thing we have to a Frank Capra-James Stewart tandem. They've made five films together, and all but one ("The Terminal") are legitimately great.
The only baffling element of their creative partnership is that it didn't happen sooner. Hanks was in his 40s and Spielberg in his 50s when they came together for 1998's devastating World War II epic "Saving Private Ryan." If you're wondering what took so long, Spielberg is right there with you. If the two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker had been able to swing it, he would've loved to direct Hanks in 1993's "Philadelphia."

Tom Hanks is looking back on playing a gay lead with his Oscar-winning turn in “Philadelphia.”
The 1993 film, based on a true story, earned Hanks his first Academy Award for playing lawyer Andrew Beckett, who filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit against his firm after he is fired upon disclosing his HIV diagnosis. Denzel Washington co-starred as the attorney who took on Beckett’s case.
“Let’s address ‘could a straight man do what I did in ‘Philadelphia’ now?'” Hanks told The New York Times. “No, and rightly so.”
Hanks continued, “The whole point of ‘Philadelphia’ was don’t be afraid. One of the reasons people weren’t afraid of that movie is that I was playing a gay man. We’re beyond that now, and I don’t think people would accept the inauthenticity of a straight guy playing a gay guy.”

Tom Hanks doesn’t think modern audiences would accept accept his Oscar-winning performance as a gay lawyer battling AIDS in 1993’s “Philadelphia.”
“Could a straight man do what I did in ‘Philadelphia’ now? No, and rightly so,” he said in an interview with The New York Times Magazine published Wednesday. “The whole point of ‘Philadelphia’ was don’t be afraid. One of the reasons people weren’t afraid of that movie is that I was playing a gay man.”
He continued, “We’re beyond that now, and I don’t think people would accept the inauthenticity of a straight guy playing a gay guy. It’s not a crime, it’s not boohoo, that someone would say we are going to demand more of a movie in the modern realm of authenticity.”

1993's "Philadelphia" was a key turning point in the career of Tom Hanks. Now considered to be one of America's finest and most cherished actors, Hanks won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Andrew Beckett, a lawyer diagnosed with HIV who was fired after his condition was exposed at his law firm. The movie was a gigantic financial hit as well, making it one of the biggest success stories of that year.
Yet, nearly 30 years removed, Hanks feels that the movie wouldn't -- or perhaps couldn't -- be made in the same way today.

For this year’s Oscars ceremony on Sunday, “Black Panther” is the first motion picture based on a comic book to receive a nomination in the Best Picture category. “Roma” could very well become the first foreign-language film to win in that same category. And as the years go by, it’ll be difficult to remember that there was ever a time that these things weren’t part of the norm. Remember a time when Tom Hanks had never won an Oscar and was more well-known for his comedy roles? When people didn’t like to speak about AIDS, much less make a feature film about it? Or a time when the great Steven Spielberg had yet to hold the gold statue in his hand? And when a woman or an African-American person had never hosted the annual telecast solo? It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since...
