Peak television was officially declared dead earlier this year when FX boss John Landgraf revealed that the number of scripted series on air in 2023 dropped 12% from the previous year – the first reduction in over a decade.
A collection of television studio bosses gathered in Austin to talk about the “strain” of producing so many shows – 600 in 2022.
Karey Burke, President, 20th Television, Nicole Clemens, President, Paramount Television Studios, Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Entertainment, Katherine Pope, President, Sony Pictures Television Studios and Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television, discussed the topic, as well as the contraction over the last twelve months in a panel at the Atx Festival in Texas.
“We’re on the other side of it,” said Burke. “I never want to celebrate the loss of opportunity but I think we all felt the strain of 600+ television shows in the marketplace and not being able to get the eyeballs.

If you've watched any of the biggest television series over the last several years, from "Stranger Things" to "Shōgun" to Marvel's "Secret Invasion", you're likely all too aware of one of the biggest debates forever raging among nerds like us: What's the best way to experience the major water-cooler shows commonly considered to be "appointment viewing"? Is the binge model popularized by Netflix the way to approach things, in which viewers are able to spend a whole weekend devouring every episode of an entire season all in one go? Or is it better to exercise a little patience and release episodes one at a time in weekly installments, allowing word-of-mouth momentum to build while keeping the entire production at the center of the cultural conversation for much, much longer? (Or, perhaps, we can have the best of both worlds through "Hacks.")

Originally envisioned as a British mockumentary spin-off starring Ricky Gervais and co-created by Steven Knight, The Office soon became one of the most popular sitcoms in history. Television fans today know that The Office is one of the most popular sitcoms in history, and while both the British and American iterations are over, the franchise is far from being dead. We have recently reported that a spin-off series was in the works with Greg Daniels returning, but while information about the spin-off had been scarce at the time, we finally have some important updates about the plot of the spin-off, which is going to be set in the same universe.
Alongside the British original and the popular US version, the following countries also produced their own version of the series: Australia, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden. Plans for a...

It's officially official: We are returning to the "Office" universe. Yes, we say universe because NBC's beloved sitcom isn't being revived or rebooted. Rather, the powers that be have opted to craft a spin-off of sorts set in the same world as the American version of "The Office," albeit centered on a new cast of characters in a new location. Per a press release, the series is set to begin filming in July for an eventual release on the streaming service Peacock, and the first plot details have been revealed.
The currently untitled "Office" spin-off hails from Greg Daniels, who officially came on board to develop the project last year. He also adapted the original British "Office" series for American television. Daniels is working alongside "Nathan for You" co-creator Michael Koman. A new mockumentary series set in the world of “The Office” is not only being developed — but was just picked up by Peacock. “The Office” creator Greg Daniels and “Nathan for You” co-creator Michael Koman’s untitled project has been ordered to series, produced by Utv.
The untitled Daniels/Koman project will star Irish film star Domhnall Gleeson and “The White Lotus” Season 2 breakout Sabrina Impacciatore, as well as an ensemble cast that has yet to be announced. According to a press release from Peacock, the documentary crew behind “The Office” (who stepped out from behind the camera in controversial later seasons) is back to work looking for a new subject, “when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” Like Dunder Mifflin’s struggle with selling paper in the digital age, the series’ synopsis suggests that it will tackle the...

Independence Day and Moonfall director Roland Emmerich heads to ancient Rome for the TV series, Those About To Die. Here’s a trailer and some other things.
Whether he makes sci-fi disaster films or somewhat more grounded dramas, writer-director-producer Roland Emmerich’s work is seldom dull. For a recent example, just take a look at Moonfall.
Emmerich is heading to ancient Rome for his latest opus – the 10-part TV series Those About To Die. It’s based on the book by Daniel P Mannix, and is all about the scheming and political intrigue that goes into the staging of gladiatorial contests. It’s probably no coincidence that the series will stream in July – a matter of months before Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated Gladiator 2 emerges in November.
Anthony Hopkins leads the ensemble cast, and stars as Emperor Vespasian. You’ll also find Dimitri Leonidas as Flavius Scorpus (who was a...

There's a market for nostalgia, and NBC's cashed in big with its newest hit, Quantum Leap.
The 2022 revival of the popular 1980s Scott Bakula-anchored time travel series came in like a quantum accelerator, throwing everything and everyone into the mix.
While maintaining some temporal continuity with the original series, the new Quantum Leap introduced viewers to the team behind the project rather than just the leaper and his guide.
What is Quantum Leap about?
The initial twelve-episode order was quickly upped to a full eighteen-episode season, and the leaps got wilder as Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) slowly regained his memories of why he took his unauthorized leap in the first place.
Guided by his workmate and fiancée, Addison (Caitlin Bassett), he managed to survive each leap into various individuals facing moments of crisis that would change their lives and the future.
In turn, Addison relied on the Q.

We officially got a full decade of Chicago Pd under our belts!
The first spinoff in the One Chicago franchise has done incredibly well and survived departures, plot shifts, and much more.
And it continues to provide viewers with often topical storytelling, edge-of-your-seat action, deep-dive character arcs, and adrenaline-racing thrills.
Viewers can't get enough of following the Intelligence Unit, headed by the polarizing and, at times, dodgy Hank Voight.
Throughout the series, we've seen various policing styles and an evolution in how things are done, particularly as the series has needed to evolve with the oscillating viewpoints on policing.
Chicago P.D. has always been timely, and it has made it the perfect fit for the One Chicago franchise, focusing on policing and immersing us into the streets of Chicago while still, at times, crossing paths with those of Chicago Med and Chicago Fire as well.

Night Court will remain in session on NBC.
NBC renewed the hit comedy for a second season today.
Although the ratings have dipped from the revival's premiere, they're still pretty impressive.
Night Court stars Melissa Rauch as unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone, the daughter of the late Harry Stone.
Abby follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding.
Fielding is played by the always-impressive John Larroquette, offering significant laughs that haven't changed since the series' initial run.
In addition to Rauch and Larroquette, Night Court also features India de Beaufort, Kapil Talwalkar, and Lacretta.

Night Court will remain in session. NBC announced today that they have renewed Night Court for season 2.
The new Night Court series revolves around “unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch), the daughter of the late Harry Stone, who follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (John Larroquette).” The launch of the series gave NBC their best comedy premiere since Will & Grace in 2017, so it’s no surprise that they’re game for more. The network said that the revival has reached an audience of 25.7 million in delayed viewing since it debuted last month.

Night Court might have just returned to our televisions on January 17, but already, we know it’s not going anywhere. NBC has renewed the comedy starring John Larroquette, reprising his role as lawyer Dan Fielding and Melissa Rauch starring as Judge Abby Stone (daughter of the late Harry Stone from the original 1984 show) for a second season. This news comes ahead of the fifth episode airing on February 7 (the first two aired back-to-back) and just two days after NBC renewed La Brea for Season 3. (The network also previously picked up Quantum Leap for a second season.) “It’s so rewarding to have audiences respond and return to a show in which they have such incredibly warm feelings, and, more broadly, it’s testament to how broadcast is still a huge driver of communal viewing,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Television, and Streaming, in a statement. “A huge thank you to our studio partners,...

“It isn’t often that a series resonates so deeply with an audience that it airs for 10 seasons, but The Blacklist proved to a perfect combination of highly talented producers, stellar writing, a cast that never failed to deliver and a crew that always rose to the occasion,” Lisa Katz, president scripted content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a statement. “A huge thank you to our partners at Sony, everyone from the past decade who made this show an integral part of NBC’s storied history and, of course, a special nod to James Spader, whose performance remains nothing short of spectacular.”

A month and a half after ordering a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake from Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller, the Peacock streaming service has now announced that they’re also teaming up with genre filmmaker James Wan for a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here). Inferno is a town in trouble, driven to the brink by racial tension, gang violence, and a collapsing economy. But things can always get worse, and they do so with astonishing speed...

There's a lot more leaping in our future, Fanatics!
After a thirty-year break, the Quantum Leap project is once again a going concern, and NBC is backing it with an early renewal, guaranteeing fans will have more adventures with Dr. Ben Song and his team to look forward to.
Quantum Leap is currently on its midseason hiatus, having aired eight episodes and with ten more to come after NBC added six more episodes in October to its initial twelve-episode season order.
A continuation of the 1990's sci-fi time travel adventure that starred Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell, the new series has done an admirable job treading a new path while paying respect to the canon that has come before.
2022's Quantum Leap is more of an ensemble cast than its predecessor, with Ernie Hudson, Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee starring alongside Raymond Lee as the time-traveling Dr.
