About six weeks ago, locals and visitors to the famed intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street saw one of the bare walls in the area begin to show some shapes and colors. Over on Instagram, posing at the same spot, Los Angeles urban pop artist Tristan Eaton wrote on July 17, “My dream wall is finally happening!”
On Aug. 25, the six-story mural, which adorns the south-facing side of the Aster club and hotel, had its official reveal in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The mural was created with spray paint and executed in Eaton’s signature collage style, which mixes pop art and traditional techniques. It’s a salute to Hollywood groundbreakers such as Judy Garland and Sidney Poitier, whose likenesses are the largest figurative elements of the work. Garland’s daughter, Lorna Luft, and granddaughter, Vanessa Richards, were among the guests who attended the ribbon-cutting.

Tristan Eaton’s art has travelled many places. It’s gone into space. It’s gone to the Super Bowl, emblazoning the game’s tickets in 2020. It’s found a home at Universal Studios, where the artist painted murals of classic Universal monsters in 2019. And his large-scale murals have covered walls in cities around the world, from New York, Los Angeles and Honolulu to Paris, Cozumel and Berlin.
Now a two-floor, 25-year retrospective of the artist and toy designer’s colorful pop-influenced work, titled “Tristan Eaton: All at Once,” has just opened at the Long Beach ...

To honor the milestone anniversaries of some of cinema’s scariest legends, Universal Pictures launched the Universal Monsters: Out of the Shadows contest, which will be hosted on the Tongal content creation platform.
The art initiative calls for U.S. residents to create an original character inspired by Universal’s classic cast of monsters, including Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Mummy, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Invisible Man. It runs from Feb. 11 through March 4 and hopes to discover visionary artists.
“We are seeking creatives who are drawn to the narrative that the Universal Monsters are the original outsiders, misfits and misunderstood,” said Holly Goline, a Universal film executive in charge of Universal Monsters.
Tasked with telling a story through one image of a creature, artists must create original, imaginative storytelling through their artistic medium of choice, whether...

In the wake of the 2017 Tom Cruise flop The Mummy, which failed to launch Universal's planned Dark Universe, the studio's classic monsters slinked briefly into the shadows. But Frankenstein and friends are living large again — and not just in films like the just-announced Invisible Man from horror filmmaker Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse. On a 50-by-200-foot wall on the studio's Universal City backlot, street artist Tristan Eaton has nearly completed work on a massive monster mural.
