Exclusive: In Playing Nice James Norton stars as Pete, a doting dad who finds out his son was switched at birth, giving him a different kind of hero to portray. “He’s a kind of small hero,” Norton told Deadline. “Unlike most of the characters I’ve played, he’s very likable, very amenable and recognizable. There’s a simplicity to him, which I hadn’t really played before, and a likability and quietness that made him feel very real.”
The adaptation of the Jp Delaney novel is produced by Studiocanal and Rabbit Track Pictures, the indie Norton set up with Kitty Kaletsky in 2019. It will bow on ITV in the UK and play on Canal+ in France. Studiocanal is handling international sales and will launch the series internationally this week in Cannes at MIPTV.

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for all episodes of “The Girl Before,” which arrived to HBO Max on February 10.
David Oyelowo isn’t eager to inhabit a minimalist home like his character from “The Girl Before.” “It would probably be fun for a weekend as a novelty, but this is not the place for me,” he says. “If Edward Monkford were my landlord, I think he would murder me.”
And murder was certainly on viewers’ minds during the four-episode HBO Max series, as Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Jane doggedly pursues answers about the death of her building’s former tenant, Emma (Jessica Plummer).
Before joining the cast, Oyelowo didn’t read the book “The Girl Before” is based on, written by creator and executive producer J.P. Delaney: “I didn’t want to know, because that’s part of the joy of it, trying to figure it out. Having all these twists and turns,...

“Selma” star David Oyelowo has played spies, saints, and even a guy who drowns a dog in “Chaos Walking,” but you’ve never seen him in a role quite like Svengali-esque architect Edward in “The Girl Before,” which premieres on HBO Max on Feb. 10. It’s based on the 2016 novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney, who adapted it for television.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as Jane, who’s trying recover from a tragic loss. She applies to live rent-free at One Fulgate House, an ultra-modern, minimalist house designed by Edward, who has some very strict rules for his tenants. Jane encounters his rarely-given approval, and he soon makes his romantic intentions towards her clear. He becomes her lover as well as her landlord, but when she learns the previous female tenant, Emma (Jessica Plummer) – who looked remarkably like her – died in the house, she wonders if she can really trust him.

There’s a feeling of familiarity in Lisa Brühlmann’s adaptation of J.P. Delaney’s “The Girl Before.” It’s possible that feeling comes from how deeply inspired it seems by Hitchcock features, particularly “Vertigo.” Or maybe it’s how the story weaves between two separate women who share far more in common than they realize. Brühlmann herself has worked on twisty stories of dueling women in the likes of “Killing Eve,” and while this HBO Max series never veers into that frenetic territory, it shows the quadrants “The Girl Before” is hitting. It makes for one emotionally complex and engaging four-part series.
As Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) says upon entering the minimalist house designed by brilliant architect Edward Monkford (David Oyelowo), “It feels like it’s waiting for someone.” The house itself has everything: a below market rent, a housekeeper system that would make Siri blush, and a list of...

"The Girl Before" isn't a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 psychological thriller, but it hangs onto the film's elements of psychological obsession with women and repeating motifs between them. As a voice in this trailer points out, someone is "acting out the same psychodrama with new players allotted the same role." Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney, "The Girl Before" has been adapted by Delaney and newer co-writer Marissa Lestradem (writer of 2022 environmental thriller series "The Swarm") into a four-episode series for BBC One and HBO Max. The series already dropped in the U.K. in December, but will...

As Mipcom rolled on at Cannes, U.K. public service broadcaster BBC held a preview of its upcoming scripted titles for journalists at an event on Monday presided over by Piers Wenger, director of BBC Drama.
A hot button topic of discussion in recent weeks has been the matter of “distinctively British content.” Hours before he was removed from office, John Whittingdale, then Minister for Media and Data, told the Royal Television Society convention at Cambridge that the government intended to introduce a White Paper that includes a requirement for such content.
“If it’s set in Britain and made in Britain by our public service broadcasters, then it should be distinctively British,” Whittingdale had said.
These proposals were rubbished during a BFI London Film Festival event last week by “Succession” writer Lucy Prebble and “His Dark Materials” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” writer Jack Thorne.

Perhaps there's a case to be made that Ron Howard might be one of the more underrated directors working at the moment. He may not be the flashiest, or the most cinephile approved, but his talents recall old school Hollywood directors like Michael Curtiz who could shift seamlessly from genre to genre with accomplished ease. His recent trio of pictures paint a pretty convincing case, finding the director moving from the racetrack biopic "Rush," to the upcoming watery adventure "In The Heart Of The Sea," and next year, delivering another high gloss blockbuster with "Inferno." And now, once again, he's pivoting to something different. Read More: Ron Howard, Robert Zemeckis & Steven Spielberg All Turned Down Directing The 'Star Wars' Prequels Deadline reports that Howard will helm an adaptation of the upcoming book "The Girl Before." Penned by J.P. Delaney (apparently the pseudonym of Tom Strong), the Hitchcock-esque story follows a woman.

With In the Heart of the Sea set to debut in just a few days, director Ron Howard is already locking down another directing gig.
Deadline reports that Universal has snagged the rights to J.P. Delaney's upcoming novel The Girl Before and has hired Howard to direct a film adaptation. The book — which is apparently suspected to have actually been written by bestselling author Tony Strong, who used a pen name here — is being called a "Hitchcockian thriller" that's a "haunting portrayal of the darkest shades of obsession." The book won't even be published until next year, but Deadline has a quick synopsis:
In The Girl Before, a traumatized woman falls in love with an extraordinary minimalist house and with the man who designed it. But when she discovers that three years earlier another damaged woman died here, she starts to wonder if her own story is just a re-run of the girl before.
