Who could forget The Adventures of Sharkboy & Lavagirl? Planet drool, the land of milk and cookies, aliens! This is surely every kid’s best dream, but in reality, the feature simply wasn’t good. It felt that Robert Rodriquez wanted to tap into the world of Spy Kids but didn’t want to copy the franchise, so he decided to make something so crazy and out-of-the-box that it ultimately feels meaningless. Likely, as a kid, you properly enjoyed the feature as there’s no shortage of interesting visuals, and there are some good intentions with the message. Other than the “you shouldn’t be

Indie Film Temperature Check: Vaccines Roll Out And Production Revs Up But Insurers, Banks Still Mia
With more than 50% of the U.S. adult population at least half vaccinated and studios plotting start dates, visions of a return to normalcy abound. So what’s the prognosis for independent film, when insurers and bank lenders remain on the sidelines even as production perks up?
Mark Gill, CEO of Solstice Studios, said things are looking up and he’s hoping to stick to a September shooting date for Hypnotic, the Robert Rodriquez thriller with Ben Affleck. But right now, “You have trouble financing any size of movie except the small ones.”
“Mostly what we do is [in the range of] $40 million to $80 million that made it impossible for us to go into production. I had hoped it would ease up.”
“As soon as the insurance is workable, it all snaps back,” Gill added, referring to Covid-19 insurance, which disappeared for new independent productions over a year ago. Specialty insurance is available but...

The company, launched in late 2018, has begun making cast offers and will distribute the film in the U.S. and sell the international rights.
“Ground Control to Major Tom” is the story of an astronaut and a Nasa ground control expert who have never met but fall in love over the course of the astronaut’s classified mission to an abandoned space station. When things go wrong and the astronaut’s ship is destroyed, ground control and the rest of the world presume he’s dead — until 18 months pass and they receive word he’s alive. Now, the only thing standing between them is a huge expanse of space and a dangerous attempt to get him home.
The title is taken from the opening line of David Bowie’s 1969 single “Space Oddity.

Chicago – The creation of new worlds has always been a mainstay of the cinema, virtually since it was invented. And whether you love or are indifferent to the films of James Cameron (“Titanic”), he remains one of the prime movers in advancing the creative tools of films. His influence is all over “Alita: Battle Angel.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Cameron co-wrote the screenplay, based on a Japanese manga graphic novel, and the film used the advancing technology invented for Cameron’s “Avatar,” which re-creates human beings into digital characters that are partially based in reality and partially computer-generated art. “Alita” is wholly an innovation of this application, as the actress provides the voice and movements, but the character is a product of digital design. The result is entertaining eye candy, as the action sequences combine martial arts power with super heroics, as interpreted by veteran director Robert Rodriguez (“Sin City” series). Add the...

If you want to know what James Cameron has been up to since he achieved worldwide box-office dominance with Avatar 10 years ago — besides tinkering away on a bunch of Avatar sequels we still don’t have release dates for — you may want to check out Alita: Battle Angel. Cameron didn’t direct this cyperpunk epic adapted from Yukito Kishiro’s manga comics, one with a reported budget of $200 million and heavy-lifting from Peter Jackson’s FX team; he handed off that job to B-movie maestro Robert Rodriquez (Sin City). But...

In 1999, two years after crafting what would be the highest grossing film ever made for over a decade in Titanic, James Cameron was brought to the attention of a Japanese Manga Battle Angel Alita from his young seven-year-old daughter. Engulfed by such a rich and vast property Cameron promised his daughter that one day he would bring the tale of Alita to life on the big screen. Twenty years later Cameron indeed kept his promise. Opting out of the directors’ chair to co-write and co-produce the Robert Rodriquez directed Alita: Battle Angel, but oh boy should it have been left as an empty promise sitting on his desk all these years.

Rose McGowan is living life on her own terms. After years of outspoken activism and a particularly fraught past few months, the actress and filmmaker has just released her first memoir, “Brave,” which promises “a no-holds-barred, pull-no-punches account” that will “expose the truth about the entertainment industry.”
Billed by publisher Harper Collins as being “unscripted, courageous, victorious, angry, smart, fierce, unapologetic, controversial, and real as f*ck,” the book has finally hit shelves and, with it, a slew of insightful new revelations about McGowan’s past and her hopes for the future. Here are seven of the biggest, and yes, the bravest.
