In “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” the gorilla has a new adversary: Skar King, the cunning, lanky, red-haired orangutan-like creature, who lords over the subterranean realm of Hollow Earth like a sadistic bully to keep his ape minions in line. With Shimo, the ancient ice Titan, whom he controls as his slave, Skar King is so formidable that it takes the two titular Titans to stop him from achieving world domination.
In creating the best villain yet in the five-film MonsterVerse franchise, director Adam Wingard relied on Wētā FX — the king of ape films, with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” right around the corner — to animate Skar King. They overhauled the design concept to ensure his biomechanics worked in line with the desired motion and also roughed him up, complete with a cat-eye reflection in one of his eyes.

Apart from having a loyal fan base of MonsterVerse enthusiasts, the film also sees deaf actor Kaylee Hottle reprising her central role from 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong. Casting a hearing impaired artist in the lead role is an inspiring step towards representation of the deaf community and Hottle is grateful to be part of this effort. Marvel’s Eternals is the other film that cast a deaf actor Lauren Ridloff in the role of Makkari.

Making a strong antagonist in monster features is always a tough task, especially when human association isn’t involved. Aside from the risk of writing becoming pretty generic and turning the characters into one-toned, motiveless evils, connecting with the audience remains a challenge. In Legendary’s Monsterverse, aside from the iconic King Ghidorah, no other adversary had managed to make that much of an impact in viewers’ minds, which is why Godzilla X Kong needed a well-written opponent to justify the team-up of the eponymous behemoths.

During the early production stage, the first mentions of Skar King as an evil, degraded version of Kong didn’t go down well with the fans, who considered it lazy to not come up with a new Kaiju and just use established characters as templates to create a new one. However, after Godzilla X Kong hit theaters, the reasons for making Skar...

Director Reveals Why Skar King is the Perfect Villain in the MonsterVerse
Director Adam Wingard wanted to show how smart primates can be in real life, and he used that to shape Skar King’s character.

Although “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” has no shortage of spectacular action involving its legendary title characters, it’s a new addition to the Monsterverse that nearly steals the show. Suko, a sort of “mini Kong” who has a complicated relationship with his more famous elder, is both utterly adorable and completely consistent with the savage nature of the monsters that populate the “Godzilla” and “Kong” movies. According to director Adam Wingard, the idea for Suko was first floated during production of his previous movie, “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
“The idea originated with [producer] Mary Parent,” Wingard told IndieWire. “We were having a story meeting, and she was talking about the future of the Monsterverse. She mentioned the idea of a ‘Son of Kong’ movie, and nobody knew what that meant. But I let it ruminate for the next two years.” When the time came for “The New Empire,” Wingard started...

Iconic characters survive the brunt of time and stay relevant through generations by adapting to new themes and varying treatments—an aspect that is clearly noticeable when we take a look at the seventy-year journey of Godzilla in the pop culture landscape. In a journey that mimics that of another pop culture legend, Batman’s transformation in comics itself, Toho’s Godzilla movies have ranged from originating in grim-dark disaster horror-themed spectacles to pure campy monster battles intended for the amusement of the younger section of the audience to metaphorical sci-fi allegories. Such a variety of treatment has not only made character timeless but has also paved the way for the global popularity of the iconic Kaiju. Which is why we can have a Godzilla movie set as a post-World War II human drama and, within a few months, have another one radically differing in tone as a monster bash-em-up movie,...

Adam Wingard returns to the director’s chair to deliver a second helping of the mother of all monster battles, following his superlative work on 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong. The fifth film in Warner Bros’ MonsterVerse series, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees Kong and Godzilla teaming up to take on a new pair of adversaries, but not without punching each other a bit first. Got to give the fans what they want, after all.
The plot picks up a couple of years after the events of the previous film, with Kong now settled into his new home in Hollow Earth and Godzilla taking down Titans on the surface world, in between power naps in the Colosseum. However, when Dr Ilene Andrews’ (Rebecca...

Warner Bros. and Legendary are hoping for a monster-sized opening weekend for “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and are tapping every method possible to pull in moviegoers, including partnering with Roblox to grab the attention of its young audience so that they will sway their parents to take them to the theater.
Over the past two weeks, Warner Bros. has been engaging Roblox users via its interactive trailer for the “Godzilla vs. King” sequel, which allows players to enter the 2D video and come out in the movie’s world of Hollow Earth. The trailer then becomes playable via an obstacle course where players are joined by Suko, the Mini-Kong, while navigating through the video and collecting movie-themed crystals.

There is a twist with the latest offering from the now-decade-old Monsterverse, a franchise that has featured Kong and Godzilla in their own movies and then in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong battling each other to the death. (These monsters never really die. But you knew that). The twist this time is there an even greater threat for these iconic giant creatures to each other and the world, so instead of being on opposite sides of the ring, they team up against an evil new villain, a batshit-crazy ape on steroids named Skar King, in order to save not just Hollow Earth — where most of the action takes place in a dense rainforest — but just about everyone else.

Let them fight? No. Let Them Be Friends!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire had me feeling like a little Donato again; sitting on the couch, cradling a bowl of sugary cereal, with my favorite Saturday morning cartoons on TV (like Godzilla: The Series). Will the screenplay win an Academy Award? Hell no. Does director Adam Wingard have an absolute blast staging supersized Titan mayhem? Big time.
Godzilla: Minus One satisfied our cravings for societally introspective and richly commentative kaiju narratives that produce more than citywide destruction. Godzilla x Kong is almost exclusively about everything Toho’s Oscar-winning Godzilla flick is not. The only thing missing from this royally massive rumbler is famed ring announcer Michael Buffer’s “Let’s get ready to rumble!” catchphrase and a ring bell’s ding each time mayhem erupts. That’s the energy Wingard brings — the definition of Friday night popcorn entertainment.

The fifth and latest entry in the Warner Bros. MonsterVerse franchise has the misfortune of arriving on the heels of the Oscar-crowned Godzilla Minus One. That Japanese film demonstrated that it’s still possible to make a monster movie involving the iconic, irradiated giant lizard that also features a compelling narrative and memorable characters. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, on the other hand, mainly traffics in the sort of CGI-generated mayhem resembling a video game that will please the series’ fans but doesn’t bring anything new to attract non-diehards. At one point in the film, Godzilla, weary from all that stomping around, lies down to take a well-deserved nap in the middle of Rome’s Colosseum. It’s the most relatable moment in the film.

The King of the Monsters is standing taller than ever since he became a surprise Oscar-winner earlier this month, but filmdom’s most famous kaiju isn’t about to let his newfound prestige get the better of him. Anyone worried that Godzilla might pull an Adam McKay and make a sudden pivot towards self-importance will be delighted to find that “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” eagerly strips both of its namesakes of whatever seriousness they might have accrued over the years, even if that means stripping them of their souls along with it.
Don’t be confused by the multiplication suggested by the silent “x” in its title: This goofy-ass, clumsily assembled Saturday morning cartoon of a movie might as well be called “Godzilla Minus Everything,” if only because the more accurate “Godzilla Minus Everything Plus Dan Stevens in a Hawaiian Shirt” wouldn’t fit on a marquee.
