Disney's Wish is now streaming on Disney+, with new viewers who may have missed the movies in theaters wondering what big criticisms attributed to the film's negative reviews.

Serving as a celebration of 100 years of Disney, Wish follows a young girl named Asha (Ariana Debose) as she takes on the sorcerer king Magnifico (Chris Pine) who is secretly harboring peoples' wishes with no plan to grant most of them.

Walt Disney Animation Studios announced Monday that the musical feature “Wish,” which made more than $250 at the global box office, will premiere on the Disney+ streaming service in April.
The film takes place in the fictional town of Rosas wherein the charming King Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine) is able to grant people’s wishes. “Wish” is directed by Oscar-winning director Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, and produced by Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones. Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore wrote the script. As the producers of Disney‘s Wish, Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones say that every aspect of the film was inspired by each Disney animated film for the past 100 years. This included the animation style, the character of Star, and especially the villainous turn of Magnifico.
Wish follows Asha (Ariana DeBose), a young girl who disagrees with how the kingdom’s ruler Magnifico (Chris Pine) treats the wishes of her fellow citizens. She wishes upon a star for change, but is surprised when that star comes down from the sky to answer her call. Even though Wish brings back the idea of the traditional villain, it was important for Magnifico to still stand out and have that turn from hero to villain.
‘Wish’, from left: Star, Asha (voice: Ariana DeBose), Valentino (voice: Akan Tudyk)
Deadline: Where did the story come from?
Peter Del Vecho: It actually came from Jennifer Lee.

As the directors of Disney’s Wish, Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn were in charge of creating a film to honor 100 years of Disney animated features. After looking at every film that came before it, they decided to use the theme of wishing upon a star and created a watercolor storybook style of animation to match.

There is a magic kingdom, one where prospective inhabitants give up their dreaming in return for security. They may retain lesser wants and needs but they have exchanged their greatest wish for blanket safety, one knitted not from the wool over their eyes but a hollowness in their hearts. That's proper fabulous stuff, but what adds weird light to that sense of darkness is that it's being told by Disney.
Disney, celebrating a hundred years of film-making. Disney, the corporation whose assemblage of intellectual properties now gives them powers they've lobbied to strengthen again and again over the stuff that childhoods are made of. Disney, the capitalist entity with private territory, embassies from the imaginary with their own police forces and tax-raising powers. Disney, whose parks are places of pilgrimage. Disney, who have monetised and merchandised folk tales. Disney!
Though much like Magnifico (Chris Pine) their rise to power is made of.

For Disney’s 100th anniversary, writer-ep Jennifer Lee was tasked with creating an original fairytale that celebrated the legacy of Disney animated films. After finding a common theme in wishing upon a star, Wish was born as a way to dissect the power and vulnerability of the concept.
While Star was originally a character with a voice, Lee says the simpler version of Star led to a much more fun character with physical humor.

Deadline: How did you arrive at that animation style? It’s very storybook-like.

Disney’s Wish is meant to celebrate 100 years of its rich and dreamy legacy, an ode to all things fascinating, if you may. However, for a film that is decidedly about having individual sparks, it completely fades into the background. Don’t get me wrong, I happened to go to a screening of this film with adolescent children who thoroughly enjoyed it because they were mostly engaging in dialogue with the characters out loud, and there’s a bunch of cute-looking characters that any kid would gobble up. It’s hardly a secret that Wish is only meant to be a cash cow for cute merch and another quirky Disney princess (she’ll probably become one) that little kids will imitate for 5 minutes and later forget. There’s nothing inspiring or relatable here, except for Ariana DeBose, whose performance obviously hits all the right spots, along with Chris Pine, who...

Disney Animation Studios’ chief creative officer Jennifer Lee had not yet written the script for “Wish” when Grammy nominated songwriter Julia Michaels wrote the demo for “This Wish” in 2020. But that demo, Lee says, “defined the whole movie; it became our North Star.”
Celebrating 100 years of storytelling at Disney, “Wish” pays homage to the celestial entity so many have wished upon. Ariana DeBose voices Asha, its main protagonist and heroine, a 17-year-old who lives in the magical kingdom of Rosas, ruled by Disney’s newest villain, King Magnifico, voiced by Chris Pine. Rosas is built on people’s wishes and hopes. When Asha makes a wish one night, she accidentally summons Star, an energetic character from the sky. In the latest from Disney Animation, Wish, we witness history. The film tells the story of a girl who wishes on a star and opens up a heap of trouble for the villainous ruler Magnifico. While the reviews have been mixed, I immensely enjoyed the story, the music, and the heart of this magical animated tale. Perhaps I needed some magic in my life, but this one was a treat. Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veersaunthorn and starring Chris Pine, Ariana DeBose, Alan Tudyk, and Victor Garber, Wish put a smile on my face, and it was a terrific way to escape into a flick.
I attended the film’s premiere the same night the SAG strike reached an agreement. Initially, I planned on participating in the interviews without the cast (due to the strike). Happily, with that news, we had a couple of new interviews to cover, including Chris Pine and Ariana DeBose.

A remix of themes, tropes and references to other – and better – Disney classics, Wish is a hollow pandering to die-hard fans for the studio’s 100th birthday. It’s so derivative and bland that one wouldn’t be surprised if Disney announced it was the first movie written and directed by artificial intelligence.

Unfulfilled potential is a powerful theme for a story. Making Disney’s choice to explore what might happen if an entire kingdom of subjects surrendered their chance to fulfil their destinies by entrusting their deepest wish – and every memory of it – to their king an intriguing premise. Is it better to live with the hope that one day your wish may come true or to hold that dream close to your heart and let it guide your life’s path?
We’ll never know. Because, sadly, the House of Mouse’s hundredth-anniversary offering fails to interrogate its own themes, choosing to bimble about looking pretty (it is Very pretty), ticking off generic highs and lows in the place of real plot points and making knowing nods to animated features past instead. Leaving us to gloomily ponder what might have been.

It's been 100 years since Walt Disney created The Walt Disney Company, which first produced short silent films like "Alice's Funnies." That film starred Walt Disney himself, in live-action, showing a little girl how he created his cartoons. The events of the next century are much too voluminous to write them all down here but needless to say, Walt Disney's company underwent many changes. Original characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy helped make the studio an industry titan, and feature films like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Cinderella" cemented its box office clout. What does it mean to be a Disney Princess? This could be a question regarding corporate decisions, as the Walt Disney Company has a specific classification for their "Princess Line" media franchise and toy line, but it's also a bit existential. “Wish” stars Ariana DeBose as Asha, a young girl hoping to become the apprentice of King Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine). The king is adored by his subjects, as he both protects and grants their wishes. But, realizing Magnifico is maybe not looking out for everyone, Asha sets out to find an answer.
In the end, all she wants is for everyone to be able to pursue the wish in their hearts. So, here’s how you can get in touch with your Disney side and see the film.
When did “Wish” come out?
“Wish” hits theaters on November 22, 2023.
Is “Wish” in theaters or streaming?
For the time being, “Wish” can only be seen in theaters.

To celebrate the release of Disney’s Wish, their new animated feature that helps celebrate the studio’s 100th birthday, we had the pleasure of chatting with some of the creatives who helped make it all possible.
The film is an all-new musical-comedy welcoming audiences to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen. This article contains spoilers for "Wish."
In honor of Walt Disney Animation's 100 year anniversary, the House of Mouse has released its 62nd animated feature -- "Wish." Starring Oscar winner Ariana DeBose and "Best Chris" Chris Pine, the story follows a young woman who makes a wish on a star with so much passion that the little Star comes down to help her save her kingdom from the evil, magical King Magnifico. Blending traditional hand-drawn animation styles and the new computer generated artistry into one film, "Wish" is also Disney's first original fairy tale. The film is the pièce de résistance of Disney's centennial celebration, and as such, features countless references to the films and characters that turned a scrappy animation studio into the most powerful name in entertainment.

If there's a constant, all-encompassing rule to the universe, it's that absolutely nothing is built to last. If all matter is doomed to the inescapable fate of entropy, and every living thing eventually dies, then what hope do such lovely intangibles as love, desire, and dreams have?
Well, to quote that ersatz Disney prince, Vision, "a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts." Love, dreams, and wishes are beautiful almost because of the fact that they can't always come true; it's the hope, the having of these wishes, that makes life worth living more than merely the attainment of them. Walt Disney and the studio that still bears his name have been a proponent of this principle for Disney (the man's) entire life and Disney (the studio's) existence to date. And now that the studio has reached the milestone of sticking around for 100 years, it's only natural that they'd wish to...

Chris Pine voices the role of villain King Magnifico in Disney’s new animated film Wish and he has a very catchy song in the movie called “This Is The Thanks I Get?!”
Magnifico is a powerful ruler who has the magical gift of being able to grant wishes, but the hero Asha learns that he only grants wishes that won’t threaten his power.
In his song “This Is The Thanks I Get?!”, Magnifico is angry that the citizens of Rosa are asking for answers about what happens with their wishes after they give them to him.
Magnifico sings, “I let you live hеre for free / And I don’t even charge you rent / I clean up all your messes / And I’m always there when you need to vent / I give and give and give and give / You’d think they’d all be content / And all I...

So most of the big animation studios have sent us their big 2023 features already. Last weekend Dreamworks sent out those music-lovin’ Trolls into the multiplex, while Sony “kicked off” the flood of flicks early this Summer with another trek across the Spider-Verse, followed quickly by the fine folks at Pixar with their Elemental. Yes, they’re still a Disney “brand”, but what about the big “kahuna, the “Mouse House” themselves? Though they suffered from a major stumble with Strange World last Winter, they’re bouncing back in a big way. After all, it’s the official 100th anniversary, so this is a return and in many ways a tribute to, the fantasy themes that were such a big part of those original full-length films. Thinking about it that way, the title makes a whole lotta’ sense because the plot of many of them centered around a Wish.

Plot: When a young woman discovers that the wishes of her community are being destroyed by an egomaniac ruler, she must try and create a little magic herself to bring joy to everyone.
Review: “When You Wish Upon A Star” is a song that has become a staple for even the slightest inclusion of Disney in their lives. It’s impossible not to be able to recognize the iconic tune featured in the animated classic Pinocchio. Initially performed by Cliff Edwards, the music has become a signature for everything Disney. And with the current 100-year celebration, Walt Disney Animation is bringing audiences their latest big-screen musical adventure, the appropriately titled Wish. The Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn-directed feature is a joyful, sweet, and engaging tale; although wishes may not come true for all audiences, it sure did for the audience I saw it with.

This year marks Disney’s 100th anniversary as an animation studio, and they’ve decided to celebrate the occasion by taking several of their classic characters and throw them all together into the same film for one magical story. That, at least, is what Wish is supposed to be—if you squint hard enough. The film plays incredibly coy with its portrayal of its classical Disney archetypes and tropes, choosing to take recognizable characters and their trademark traits and transpose them onto ancillary characters with only seconds of screen time.
What Zack Snyder did to DC Comics is what Wish does to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and that’s extremely odd for a studio so surgically effective at fracking its own nostalgia to new audiences. That wouldn’t be such a knock against Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn’s film had it turned out to have a life and vibrancy all its own.

“When You Wish Upon a Star” is one of those songs, like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” that’s bigger than a song. It was first heard, of course, in the 1940 Walt Disney animated classic “Pinocchio,” where it was sung by Jiminy Cricket. Disney made it the company theme song in the ’50s, and since the early ’80s it has been featured in the studio’s motion-picture logo. Steven Spielberg added a layer of fairy dust to the song’s mythology when he talked about how close he came to playing it over the final moments of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” For Disney, “When You Wish Upon a Star” is more than an anthem — it’s a totem of corporate magic, a statement of everything the company represents and holds dear.

“Be careful what you wish for” is the moral of Disney’s latest animation, an odd sort of greatest-hits package that ticks all the boxes for what passes as inspirational fare these days. Sadly, that message mostly applies to the studio bosses, who appear to have closed their eyes and blown out 100 candles in return for a 95-minute movie based on the company theme song: Pinocchio’s “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
Cliff Edwards’ haunting, seven-note refrain is referenced throughout the entire movie, but in a weirdly mutated version that, whenever it chimes in, sounds like whoever’s playing it has forgotten how it actually goes, or might be playing it with a rubber spoon. Similarly, on closer examination (which is not at all advised), the plot comes to resemble a similarly wonky AI meditation on the song’s lyrics, which served Pinocchio’s themes very well with its talk of hearts’ desires,...

In the Renaissance era of the 1990s, Walt Disney Animation Studios had seemingly cracked the code in terms of telling old-fashioned stories with a modern twist. There were still plenty of fables and fairy tales to adapt, from the story of a mermaid who wanted to be a human to a star-crossed romance between a brainy young woman and a monstrous beast. And the studio was able to harness present-day Broadway-style songs into these stories, lending them a grandeur and epic quality that made them annual theatrical events. To the eagle-eyed viewer, there were also funny little Easter eggs referencing past Disney films, if you knew where to look. In "Aladdin," for example, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in which the portly Sultan is seen playing with a series of figurines, including one that is unmistakably the Beast from "Beauty and the Beast." To recognize this gag was a miniature reward...

A brave young woman who comes into her own via mild danger and zippy musical numbers: check. Talking animals: check. An adorable sidekick of indeterminate origin: check. A menacing evildoer who traffics mostly in scary green magic: check. A world populated almost exclusively by sweet citizens who continuously break into song: check. Dead parent: check check check! For its latest original animated outing, Disney sticks to the usual trappings with a few twists here and there, most of them appealing to moviegoing families desperate for a new film to entertain kiddos to over the holidays.

There’s a character in Disney’s self-mythologizing movie Wish whose life dream is to inspire the next generation. He lives in Rosas, the fictional kingdom ruled by the self-taught sorcerer Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine). For reasons that remain murky, the wizard hoards his constituents’ wishes in his castle tower. When residents of Rosas turn 18, they relinquish their greatest dream in hopes that one day their benevolent dictator will fulfill it. Magnifico, like all authoritarian leaders, insists that it’s a small price to pay for their safety and eternal peace of mind.
The whole premise is very Disney, and Wish plays out as one would expect. Magnifico meets his match in Asha (Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old girl who dares to question the order of things. Their encounter represents the generational crossroads that Disney finds itself at during its centennial. In him, a symbol of authority and empire. In her,...

This holiday season’s Wish is the 62nd feature film from the fabled Walt Disney Animation Studios, and the only one to be released during the animation house’s 100th anniversary. You can feel the weight of legacy in nearly every pixel of the film’s exquisitely designed frames.
Ever since Disney made the fateful choice to shut down Wdas’ hand-drawn divisions some 15 years ago, the studio has struggled with a sense of loss; the loss of history, the loss of legacy; and the loss of a little bit of that Disney magic. In the same timeframe, the company also scaled new creative heights, releasing several of their best so-called princess (or fairy tale) movies in the canon—Tangled, Frozen, Moana—and some true groundbreaking risks like Zootopia and the first Wreck-It Ralph. However, it’s never been quite the same.
This may be why nostalgia for dreams of old permeates Wish.

Disney has created an entire legacy on the concept of wishing on a star, but what happens if that star was an adorable, autonomous being? That’s just the start of Disney’s centennial feature, “Wish,” an animated musical that simultaneously pays homage to the Walt Disney Company while forging a new path of storytelling meant to sustain another hundred years.
But the idea of making a film to represent 100 years of storytelling is a tall feat, and it’s the biggest barrier to “Wish.” For all the film’s adoration of the Disney Company, and it’s back to basic approach of celebrating a great villain, Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore’s screenplay often feels underwritten, with characters who are delightful but lacking that wee bit of verisimilitude to make them jump off the page. Make no mistake, “Wish” is a darling film with fantastic music and amazing voice performances,...

After 100 years of making animated film musicals about talking animals, princesses, classic literary characters, superheroes, and even space pirates, there's not a whole lot of ground that Disney has never covered before. With the upcoming "Wish," however, the House of Mouse will ring in its centennial by focusing on the very idea of wishes. It's a motif that's appeared time and time again in the studio's work, yet it's rarely interrogated. What even is a "wish," really? Who decides which wishes come true and which ones do not? And if wishes can change the course of one's life, what does that even mean for those whose greatest wishes are never granted? It's a real existential conundrum, the further you go down this rabbit hole.
No doubt, you'll be shocked to learn that Disney hasn't fashioned "Wish" as an Ingmar Bergman-esque rumination on these questions and what they say about the human condition.

Though the third “Frozen” installment is in early stages, Disney Animation chief creative officer Jennifer Lee — who directed the first two frosty films — told BFI London Film Festival attendees on Thursday that she is “blown away” by what she’s seen so far.
“Every morning last week they carved out space for me to work with the creative team on it, and I am blown away and I am so excited,” Lee said during a Spotlight conversation with Tricia Tuttle, head of directing fiction at the National Film and Television School. “I don’t know what I’m doing on it yet — I’m not doing nothing — except doing what I do now, which is we work on every project as as team and I’m in there with creative. But with ‘Frozen,’ just a little bit more.”
In addition to directing “Frozen” and “Frozen II,” Lee penned the screenplays.
