Mumbai, Nov 19 (Ians) Even as Team India finds itself locked in a nail-biting battle of wills against Australia, diehard fans of Rohit Sharma & Co are turning to Kabir Khan’s Ranvir Singh-starrer ’83’ for solace. After all, back in 1983, Kapil’s Devils had put up an eminently beatable score of 183 in their surprise appearance at Lord’s in the Odi Cricket World Cup final against the then cricket superpower West Indies, yet they came home with the prized trophy.
Pan to Ahmedabad 2023, where we just saw the Australians mount an asphyxiating bowling attack on Team India, restricting them to 240 runs.
Forty years ago, as a generation learnt from ’83’, India too had lost the toss, and was asked to bat first by the West Indies, who bowled out their less-fancied rivals for 183, sending Indian fans into a sulking vortex, just like after the first innings of the ongoing Word Cup Final.

Mumbai, April 6 (Ians) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) expresses its profound grief at the sad demise of Sudhir Naik. The former India opener passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday.

He played 85 first-class games and scored 4376 runs, including a top score of 200 not out.
Post his playing days, Naik played an ever-bigger role in Mumbai. Managing the affairs of the National Cricket Club, he was instrumental in shaping and nurturing the careers of Zaheer Khan, Wasim Jaffer and Nilesh Kulkarni,...

Indian cricketers were scaling the upward graph with performances of match-winning ascendancy. The cricket world was amazed with the supreme quality of cricketers being churned out from various corners of India. Unknown and unheard-of players seemed to emerge to become superstars and India soon boasted of being able to challenge most sides with even their second-string players.
The Ipl and the initiatives taken by the Bcci were the reasons for this blossoming pool of cricketers, each one with a tale that made one marvel at their dedication and hard work. Most of them were from humble and not privileged backgrounds.
The advent of the digital and multi-media world drew the Indian cricket fans in droves and cricket and cricketers became the pin-up stars for one and all. There was no exit interview or interaction between the employees and the company and a call or a message was all that apparently one got as an adieu.
Reverberating with the unceremonious exits of thousands of Twitter, Amazon, Meta and several other such companies, one was surprised about the dreaded pink slip that was given to all the selectors of the Indian cricket team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) as well.
The loss in the semifinal stage of the T20 World Cup was the death knell for the wise men who failed to select the right winning squad for the prestigious tournament.
The selectors in the past have been called various names. However, two of India’s legendary cricketers, referred to them as ‘A bunch of Jokers’ and ‘Court Jesters and Lame Ducks’, which was pretty amusing at that time. Both were proven right. However,...

New Delhi, Oct 20 (Ians) Newly-elected Bcci president Roger Binny on Thursday said the board can’t decide on its own whether the Indian cricket team will visit Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup or not as the travel-related decisions are taken by the government.
The Bcci president’s comment came after he was posed with a question on the recent decision of India to not travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup.
“That is not the Bcci’s call. We can’t say where our team has to go. Whether we leave the country or teams coming into the country, we need clearance. Once we get clearance from the government then we go with it. We can’t make decisions on our own. We have to rely on the government,” Binny said at an event organised by Karnataka State Cricket Association in Bengaluru.

Mumbai, Oct 18 (Ians) Former India all-rounder Roger Binny, who on Tuesday succeeded Sourav Ganguly as the newly-elected Bcci president, underlined two primary areas of focus — reducing player injuries, improving pitches for domestic cricket in the country.
In his first interaction with the media, the 1983 World Cup winner called the injuries to premier India cricketers a “concern” and said he wants to get to the bottom of it and figure out ways of reducing them.
“We will look to improve on what we can do to reduce the injuries to players. Players getting frequently injured is a concern, and we wish to get to the bottom of it all and see how it can be changed for the better,” Binny told reporters after Bcci’s annual general meeting, where he was elected.

The 67-year-old Binny was the lone candidate for the post of Bcci president and was elected unopposed for the top post in the Indian cricket board.

Binny was the first Anglo-Indian of Scottish origin to play cricket for India. His son, Stuart Binny, followed in his father’s footsteps, representing Karnataka at the domestic level and India in six Tests, 14 One-day Internationals and three T20Is.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (Ians) Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who is soon going to become a former Bcci president, has fallen out of favour in the board and is reportedly ending his term on a ‘disappointing’ note.
During the upcoming Bcci Agm and elections on October 18, most members of the outgoing administration are set to find places in the new dispensation, barring Ganguly and Jayesh George, the joint secretary. And, Ganguly is definitely not pleased with the developments in the last few days.
The former India allrounder Roger Binny on Tuesday filed his nomination for the post of Bcci president and is likely to get elected unopposed since no other candidate has emerged so far as his challenger.
As a normal practice, the outgoing Bcci president proposes the name of the upcoming board chief but a dejected Ganguly didn’t do the same with Binny. The former cricketer was to...

After a series of meetings of the top brass of the Bcci, along with senior past and current administrators from prominent state associations, in Delhi last week and one on Monday evening in Mumbai, it was clear that Ganguly will not continue as president. India’s stunning 1983 World Cup triumph is retold in endearing style by a sports film with a sharp anticolonialist drive
Previously a fashioner of star vehicles for Salman Khan, director Kabir Khan anchors this nimble and big-hearted biopic of the India cricket team’s improbable 1983 World Cup triumph in a smiling performance from new-generation hunk Ranveer Singh as captain Kapil Dev. Dev’s wobbly English, which makes him a laughing stock among his teammates, seems to stand for the group’s inferiority complex. But inside this awkwardness is an obduracy and capacity for improvisation that becomes the guiding light of their victory run. As he blurts out on the team bus: “Taste the success once, tongue want more!”
India, who had only won a single World Cup match before the tournament, were deeply unfancied outsiders. So Khan frames the arrival in England of Dev, and other now legendary cricketers such...
