Monday night’s Daily Show saw Jon Stewart attract his largest live-plus-same-day audience in more than a month.
Per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, Monday’s Stewart-led Daily Show episode averaged 697,000 total viewers and 152,000 P18-49 viewers at 11 p.m. Et. Comparing live-plus-same-day data, that’s up +1% in total viewers, but -11% in P18-49 viewers from his most recent Daily Show episode.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that The Daily Show‘s May 20 episode will see a significant linear viewership bump once time-shifted data arrives in the coming days.
Chairperson of the Commission on Presidential Debates co-founder and co-chair Frank Fahrenkopf was Stewart’s guest last night on The Daily Show. Fahrenkopf’s appearance was a newsy one, having come on the heels of news last week that both President Biden and former President Trump had agreed to face-off at two presidential debates that would be held outside the purview of his organization,...

The Commission on Presidential Debates was founded 35 years ago, and it has overseen the general election presidential and vice-presidental debates ever since—until this year.
Which makes The Daily Show‘s booking of the Cpd founder co-chair Frank Fahrenkopf tonight a bit of a “get,” coming hot on the heels of news last week that both President Biden and Former President Trump had agreed to face-off at two presidential debates that would be held outside the purview of his organization.
The Commission had previously announced plans to host a series of debates in September and October, which both campaigns criticised for being too late in the election cycle. Although the Cpd has said it’s still ready to execute on those plans, Stewart’s guest tonight seems be taking more of a scorched-earth approach to his reponse that Biden independently arranged debates with CNN and ABC—and that Trump had agreed to participate in them.

Donald Trump said that his campaign has agreed to participate in a vice presidential debate — but on Fox News.
His statement came a day after Joe Biden’s presidential campaign said that Vice President Kamala Harris had accepted CBS News’ invitation for a debate, either on July 23 or Aug. 13.
In a message on Truth Social, his social media platform, Trump wrote, “On behalf of the future Vice President of the United States, who I have not yet chosen, we hereby accept the Fox Vice Presidential Debate, hopefully at Virginia State University, the first Historically Black College or University to host a Debate – Date to be determined. I urge Vice President Kamala Harris to agree to this. Make America Great Again!” Trump didn’t say anything about the CBS News invite.

The Republican National Committee is withdrawing from presidential debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates, concluding that the group has been unresponsive to its concerns over the next events in 2024.
In a statement, Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the RNC, said, “Debates are an important part of the democratic process, and the RNC is committed to free and fair debates. The Commission on Presidential Debates is biased and has refused to enact simple and commonsense reforms to help ensure fair debates including hosting debates before voting begins and selecting moderators who have never worked for candidates on the debate stage.”
The vote was unanimous.
The Commission on Presidential Debates is the non-partisan group set up in 1988 to host the fall presidential debates. The organization, chaired by Frank Fahrenkopf and Antonia Hernandez, is tasked with selecting moderators, dates, formats and other elements of the events, which have produced some of...

The Republican National Committee is threatening to block its 2024 presidential nominee from participating in the next general election debate unless a series of changes are made to schedule and structure of the organization that holds them.
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said on Thursday that the party would begin to amend its own rules at its upcoming winter meeting to prohibit those candidates from participating.
“The RNC has a duty to ensure that future presidential nominees have the opportunity to debate their opponents on a level playing field,” she wrote in a letter to Frank Fahrenkopf and Kenneth Wollack, the co-chairs of the Commission on Presidential Debates.
She added, “So long as the Cpd appears intent on stonewalling the meaningful reforms necessary to restore its credibility with the Republican Party as fair and nonpartisan actor, the RNC will take every step to ensure that future Republican nominees are given that opportunity elsewhere.

C-span Places Steve Scully On Indefinite Leave After He Admits To False Claim About His Twitter Hack
Updated, with comment from Debate Commission co-chair, Trump: Steve Scully, the longtime C-span anchor who was to moderate the second presidential town hall debate this evening, is being placed on leave after he admitted that he falsely claimed that his Twitter account had been hacked.
Last week, in the face of attacks from President Donald Trump, Scully posted a public message on Twitter directed at Anthony Scaramucci, the former White House communications director, asking him how he should respond. Although many speculated that Scully mistakenly posted the tweet when it should have been a private message, the next day he claimed that his account had been hacked. The Commission on Presidential Debates, which was organizing the events, said that it was investigating.
In a statement, C-span said, “Steve Scully made us and the Commission aware of this new information late Wednesday (10/14). By not being immediately forthcoming to C-span and the Commission about his tweet,...

Updated, with comments from Debate Commission co-chair: Frank Fahrenkopf, co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, told Deadline that they have yet to directly hear from the Trump campaign that they will skip next week’s debate after it switched to a virtual format.
Fahrenkopf also said that in a virtual format, there would be media in both locations with the candidates, so that they would not be able to read from notes or a Teleprompter.
After the announcement was made that the Oct. 15 event would switch to the virtual format, Trump’s supporters quickly argued that Biden would use notes, in line with their general argument that the Democratic nominee is too feeble to be president.
Fahrenkopf said that they gave a heads up to the campaigns at about 7 Am Et, about 20 minutes before the announcement went out, but said that it was the type of decision, made in consultation with the Cleveland Clinic,...

President Donald Trump says he will not participate in the second presidential debate, which is set to go virtual after Potus and First Lady Melania tested positive for Covid-19.
On Thursday morning, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that the candidates would appear remotely during the Oct. 15 debate “in order to protect the health and safety of all involved.” Shortly thereafter, Trump told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo that he would not attend unless the Cpd reverses course and authorizes an in-person event.

Kamala Harris and Mike Pence quickly clashed in the vice presidential debate over the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus.
Separated from her rival by plexiglass barriers, Harris called the response — led by Pence as the head of the coronavirus task force — as “the greatest failure of any administration in the history of the country.”
Pence, however, took issue when Harris said that she would not take a vaccine if it is Trump who recommends it.
“I just ask you, stop playing politics with people’s lives,” he said. “The reality is that we will have a vaccine, we believe, before the end of the year and it will have the capacity to save countless American lives.”
But Pence also had to defend what has been happening at the White House in the past week, as dozens of White House staffers have tested positive for the virus along with...

The first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden likely will be the most watched political event of the cycle so far, but it’s the aftermath of the debate that will be almost as important as what they say and what they do.
The minutes, hours and days afterward will see an avalanche of analysis, polling and other data to try to frame who won and who lost. Key moments will get played and shared, and even debate moderator Chris Wallace will be scrutinized for his framing of questions and his control over the proceedings.
Chris Wallace Selects Presidential Debate Topics
There will be no shortage of ways to watch the debate, which starts at 9 Pm Et at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic. All the major broadcast and cable news networks will carry the feed, while it will be shown on platforms ranging from Roku to Twitter.

Fox News’ Chris Wallace, C-span’s Steve Scully and NBC News’ Kristen Welker will moderate the three presidential debates between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, and USA Today’s Susan Page will be at the helm for the vice presidential debate.
The Commission on Presidential Debates, a bipartisan group that has organized the debates since 1988, announced the lineup on Wednesday.
Wallace, anchor of Fox News Sunday, will moderate the first presidential debate on Sept. 29 from Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic. He also moderated a presidential debate in 2016. The format will be more traditional, with nine segments of 10 minutes each. The moderator will pose an opening question and the candidates will have two minutes to respond. Then there will be a longer discussion of the segment topic.
