To the horror enthusiasts eager for a fresh cinematic experience, may I introduce: Dark Windows. Alex Herron (Leave) returns to the director’s chair for his second feature film, crafting a narrative that promises both depth and dread. Fans will recognize the up-and-coming Annie Hamilton, celebrated for her roles in The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) and Inventing Anna (2022).
The film’s narrative delves into the lives of four teenagers – Tilly (Anna Bullard), Monica (Annie Hamilton), Peter (Rory Alexander), and Allison (Grace Binford Sheene). Their youthful journey takes a tragic turn when a car crash claims Allison’s life. The tragedy casts a shadow over Allison’s memorial, where her grieving uncle bitterly confronts the trio, placing the weight of her demise squarely on their shoulders. Seeking refuge from the blame and the engulfing grief, Monica proposes an escape to her grandparents’ summerhouse, nestled in the tranquil countryside. It’s a...

Cross-cultural misunderstandings about in Alex Herron’s atmospheric fable about a young woman looking for her roots in a far-off land. A thriller dressed up as a horror film, perhaps to please Shudder, Leave is the first serious venture into fiction for the director, who is best known for his music videos – and, indeed, it uses the black metal scene as a backdrop in places. Although most of the action takes place in his native Norway, it’s mostly filmed in English, which other characters speak for the benefit of its American-born heroine, and is squarely aimed at an international audience.
She is Hunter (Alicia von Rittberg), found in a graveyard as a baby in an overblown opening scene which might have been lifted from one of Herron’s videos. The cross around her neck is interpreted as a Satanic symbol and causes consternation, but Raylan (Clarence Smith), the man who finds her,...

More than 300 industry delegates from top shingles including Warner Bros Discovery, Viaplay, Germany’s Constantin Film, The Match Factory and France’s TF1 Studio are expected on the shores of Haugesund, Norway, over Aug. 23-26, for Scandinavia’s major film showcase, New Nordic Films.
Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” will both open the film confab festivities and screen alongside 18 new Nordic finished films at the market. But for the avid buyers and programmers of Nordic content, the biggest draw will be the 18 works in progress – half of them looking for sales and distribution – and 23 pics in development available for co-production and financing.
“We’ve noticed a shift in recent years, with buyers and sellers favouring the Works in Progress and Nordic Coproduction Market over the market screenings. These seem to be more valuable for the industry,” said Gyda Velvin Myklebust, head of New Nordic Films.
