Amazon Prime’s latest offering, Dhootha, chronicles the story of an ambitious journalist, Sagar Verma (Naga Chaitanya Akkineni), who joins a major newspaper publication as a chief editor. Sagar considered himself Dhootha, the messenger who brings the truth to people. The irony of the situation was that Sagar was a corrupt journalist who would go to great lengths to secure his victory. Also, Sagar got the chief editor position by manipulating his superior against Charles, the journalist who was supposed to succeed in the role. Sagar told everyone that Charles wasn’t a great fit for the job, as he was mentally unstable. Sagar had it all: wealth, power, and fame, but his perfect life took a nosedive when a newspaper clipping predicted the death of his dog. At first, Sagar made it out to be some kind of silly prank, but soon, the prediction written on the paper became a reality.

ReviewDirector Indhu Vs has made a daring, promising debut with her unambiguous politics, which is the biggest plus of the film.Lakshmi PriyaDisney+ Hotstar“I have only done what people expect from me so far,” Nithya Menen’s unnamed character tells a journalist halfway through the film 19(1)(a), amid what seems like Nithya’s first slightly rebellious act. She is a woman stuck in routine, struggling to keep her widowed and depressed father’s photocopy shop afloat in a village in Kerala, more resigned than happy in her small world. The film’s initial sequences are an apt reflection of her life, ebbing and flowing calmly, with no loud overtures or theatrics. Things begin to change with the entry of Vijay Sethupathy’s Gauri Shankar, a writer and activist named with purpose — no doubt, a reference to slain journalist Gauri Lankesh. It is through him that the reason behind the film’s name,...

FilmsThe children’s film becomes sweet, telling and entirely genuine, just by letting children be children, and subtly giving a wake-up call to a pressing issue.CrisAjay with the kids in 'Madappally United'Watching child after child gather into a group of 11, chattering, swinging a bat and tossing a ball around, can be such a heart-warming picture. They walk in and out of each other’s homes, bring out parts of a cricketing kit split between them and stride towards the only open field they knew was big enough to play. The scene is from a Malayalam film, Madappally United, yet to release, but which has gone to many film festivals across the world and won awards too. It manages to be sweet, telling and entirely genuine, just by letting children be children, and subtly giving out a wake-up call to a pressing issue. Ajay Govind, the filmmaker who happened to...

Review'Home' falls in the category of light-weight, 'feel good' Malayalam cinema that wets its feet in an issue of concern but doesn't dare to take the plunge. Sowmya RajendranHome, directed by Rojin Thomas, is anchored by a wonderful Indrans who plays an insignificant man with many insecurities. Having built his career as a comedian, it's only in later years that his ability to do serious, profound and moving characters came under the spotlight. In Home, Indrans is named Oliver Twist. Ironically, the boy from the Charles Dickens novel is best remembered for asking for 'some more', but Oliver Twist of Home shrinks away from asking for the bare minimum — respect. As he recedes to the background each time his sons throw barbs at him, Indrans is a pleasure to watch. Few actors can perform with such nuance, making the pain their own. Several films have come out on how technology has overturned our lives,...

MollywoodDirector Dinjith Ayyathan presents a smoothly packed script but appears to take a stand to not offend conventions while handling the serious subject of arranged marriage and divorce.CrisA flight home, a marriage bureau, a marriage, a honeymoon – too much happens all at once in too little time for Shajith Kumar Amminippilla or us to make sense of what’s happening with his life. The title character of Kakshi: Amminippilla is nearly forgotten in the chaos that his marriage is. He stands there helpless, as decisions are made for him, a look of utter annoyance on his face turning into utter frustration in the middle of a song that makes him stand up and announce to the world: I want a divorce. The movie, as it’s been revealed through the trailer, is about an Nri who makes petty complaints about his new wife and asks for a divorce, and...
