The Tokyo Olympics came one year late, but at least they happened. And they just so happened to be watched by 42% fewer viewers than the Rio Games in 2016, according to total audience delivery (Tad) tallies. The all-in number of 15.5 million average viewers across the Tokyo Games includes NBC, its cable channels and digital properties — including Peacock. The numbers come from a combination of Nielsen and Adobe data, and combined are down from the 26.7 million total viewers, per night, from Rio. We should note that the final Nielsen numbers for NBC’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday and the Closing Ceremony on Sunday will be in Tuesday. Earning gold, silver and bronze, respectively, were the first Sunday of competition (20 million viewers), the first Thursday (19.5 million) and the second Tuesday (17.4 million). On the No. 1 night, NBC aired the women’s gymnastics team’s — including Simons Biles — qualifying round during that Sunday primetime broadcast.

All that shines eventually loses its luster over time and viewership for NBC’s coverage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is no exception. Wednesday evening continued a downward trend in primetime ratings for the global sporting event on NBC, airing to 12.5 million viewers and earning a 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demo, per overnight numbers. Viewership fell 16% in viewers and six tenths in rating from Tuesday.
NBC’s Olympics coverage has dominated primetime since the opening ceremony on Friday, but this year’s games are no match for the viewership of the Rio Olympics, which drew in more than 26 million viewers for the corresponding night in 2016 for more than a 50% decline.
Last evening saw U.S. swimmer Caeleb Dressel take gold for the men’s 100m freestyle race. The night also consisted of the women’s table tennis semifinal, men’s BMX Racing quarterfinals and more.

It’s not even halfway through the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, but the storylines coming out of Japan have been shocking. Every morning, Americans wake up to another surprise victory — or a missed podium.
While gold medals were expected for Carissa Moore in surfing and USA in 3×3 women’s basketball, victories for Keifer Lee in fencing and Anastasija Zolotic in taekwondo shone a spotlight on sports that barely find coverage in a normal Olympics. Not to mention, fans everywhere are swooning over the 6-foot-3, tattooed athlete. With the victory and attention, many are hailing him as the next Michael Phelps. Except, the 24-year-old—dubbed the fastest swimmer in the world—thinks that comparison, er, sinks. Move aside Michael Phelps, because Caeleb Dressel has entered the pool. The 24-year old swimmer is the fastest swimmer in the world and has the potential to be the fourth swimmer in history to earn seven medals in a single Olympic Games. Does his name sound a bit familiar? Well, that's because the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be the second time Caeleb swims for Team USA. At the 2016 Games, he won two gold medals. And now, this summer, he will be swimming alongside 52 teammates, including Katie Ledecky and Ryan Murphy, in events such as the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Not to mention, he holds multiple world records plus seven gold medals from the 2017 World Championships and eight...

NBCUniversal said Monday that it will present an unprecedented 7,000 hours of coverage of the Tokyo Olympics this summer on two broadcast networks, six cable networks and multiple digital platforms serving both English- and Spanish-language viewers.
The Games, postponed from last summer, will unspool July 23-August 8 in Tokyo, the company said, dispelling rumors to the contrary that have been percolating given local discontent tied to low Covid vaccination rates in Japan. There will be no foreign visitors and may not be any live fans. But this will be the first major global gathering since the pandemic began.
“After a devastating year, the world comes together again, finally, in Tokyo this summer,” said Molly Solomon, Executive Producer and President, NBC Olympics Production. “We are going to deliver the most comprehensive — and accessible — coverage for any sports event in history.
