Exclusive: WME has promoted Annabel Gualazzi, Max Maulitz, and Daniel Molina to Partner in the agency’s talent department, Deadline can exclusively reveal. The rising trio will continue to be based out of the agency’s Beverly Hills office.
Gualazzi has been with WME since 2007 and represents actors and directors alike. She brokered Selena Gomez’s deal for Hulu’s Emmy-winning murder mystery series Only Murders in the Building, catapulted Wednesday breakout Emma Myers into roles in the forthcoming Minecraft and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, and recently closed Rami Malek’s deal for James Vanderbilt’s historical drama Nuremberg. Y’lan Noel has been cast as Dan Freeman, the protagonist in the FX adaptation of Sam Greenlee’s spy novel, “The Spook Who Sat By the Door,” which is being executive produced by Lee Daniels. The project is in pilot production at the premium cabler.
In “Spook,” the fictional Freeman is the first Black CIA officer hired by the agency in the late 1960s, who has trained in high-level combat and espionage. He is described as “a patriot, a Vietnam vet, and secretly, a Black Revolutionary.”
Noel, known for playing Daniel in Issa Rae’s “Insecure” on HBO, was most recently in the Stella Maghie romantic drama “The Photograph” from Universal Pictures last year alongside Rae, Lakeith Stanfield and Chelsea Peretti. In mixing real and fictional movie stars in Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino helped his cause by casting performers who were careful not to do impressions, but bite sized performances as iconic stars who in moments are eerily reminiscent of those subjects. Margot Robbie captured the essence of Sharon Tate, and Billions and Homeland star Damian Lewis perfectly channels Steve McQueen in a scene at the Playboy Mansion. A performance people are also talking about is Mike Moh’s brief but memorable turn as Bruce Lee. It is one of the funniest scenes in the movie, when Lee locks up with Brad Pitt’s stuntman character Cliff Booth in a disagreement over how the iconic Bruce Lee, all 5’8″ and 141 pounds of him, would fare in a brawl with the 6’3″ 200+ pound heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali.
