“The Comey Rule” premiered on Showtime over two nights on September 27 and 28 of last year telling the story of James Comey’s (played by two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels) tenure as the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The two-part limited series frames Comey’s time as the head of the FBI through two of the most high profile investigations the agency conducted. The first is the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary and Comey’s decision to announce that the investigation was being reopened (due to a connection with former congressman Anthony Weiner) less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election. The second part of the series examines Comey’s navigation of the agency’s investigation into the campaign of President Donald Trump (played by Emmy winner Brendan Gleeson) and possible connections it had with the Russian government.

The mark of a great actor is the ability to deliver a powerful performance, even without a lot of noise. That’s what Jeff Daniels does in Billy Ray’s ripped-from-the-headlines two-part limited series “The Comey Rule,” which hit Showtime September 27, 2020 for maximum impact ahead of the November election. For this docudrama, Daniels took on a well-known figure in recent American history — FBI Director James Comey — who went toe-to-toe with President Donald J. Trump (Brendan Gleeson), who infamously fired Comey in May 2017.
Daniels (“The Newsroom”) brings his trademark decency and gravitas to the role. (He’s also 6’3″ to Comey’s 6’8″.) Ray, Oscar-nominated for the adapted screenplay for “Captain Phillips,” pursued Daniels because “he brings instant credibility,” he said in a phone interview. “You know the guy’s telling you the truth. With someone as polarizing as Comey, that’s an important hire. Jeff is someone America already trusted. I needed...

Overshadowed by global pandemic and political strife, 2020 and 2021 have seen the end of several flagship Showtime series, including “Homeland,” which garnered the network its one and only win for Outstanding Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards back in 2012. But all is not lost for the premium cable network, which just might have a few tricks up its sleeve yet, as Golden Globe nominations grow closer.
But let’s start with a look at those series which recently took their final bow. While it might be something of a long shot to see “Homeland” return to its former glory, particularly given the final season’s invisibility at last year’s Emmy Awards, it’s not unthinkable that Claire Danes slip into a lead actress lineup or two in acknowledgment of her final turn as Carrie Mathison.
It’s also fair to mention “Shameless,” currently airing its 11th and final season.

President-elect Joe Biden has selected Merrick Garland as his nominee to be the next attorney general, the Associated Press and other outlets reported.
Garland, who sits on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama in 2016 after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to advance his nomination, or even meet with him.
Garland has served on the appeals court since 1997.
If confirmed, Garland would have one of the highest-profile Cabinet positions, with enormous influence on criminal and civil prosecutions. Perhaps his biggest impact on the entertainment industry will be on who he selects to lead the Antitrust Division, which reviews major mergers and acquisitions.
Biden also would get a vacancy to fill on the D.C. Circuit with the nomination. The appeals court can have enormous influence over laws passed by Congress and regulations implemented by federal agencies.

Ava DuVernay will headline a fundraiser for Cory Booker’s Senate reelection campaign on Wednesday.
Booker’s re-election is widely predicted, as he faces Rik Mehta, a biotech entrepreneur. But the New Jersey incumbent has long ties to the entertainment industry that extend to his days as the mayor of Newark. Booker and DuVernay both have become champions of criminal justice reform.
The event’s ticket price starts at $50 per person and rises to $5,000 for those who want to be listed as co-chairs.
Among those on the host committee for the virtual event are Emily Deschanel, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Michael and Lydia Kives, Bari Mattes, Erik Moore and Chuck Ortner.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Booker has raised almost $700,000 from entertainment industry sources for his campaign, placing him in the top 10 among all Democrats.
The event is among several fundraisers planned in the last week before the election that include showbiz figures.

Is it possible for something to feel dated and too soon at the same time? Watching The Comey Rule, Showtime’s two-part limited series (premiering tonight) about former FBI Director Jim Comey’s rocky four-year tenure straddling the Obama and Trump administrations, is in some ways like stepping into a distant period piece. In the opening minutes, we meet Comey on the morning of his job interview with Obama at the White House. Comey (played by Jeff Daniels) stares into his closet, mulling which navy suit to wear. His wife eventually picks one for him.

Showtime airs the battle between ex-fbi director James Comey and President Donald Trump and the investigation into Russian election meddling depicted in The Comey Rule on Sunday and Monday. This after ViacomCBS changed a shocking decision to relegate the $40 million star-studded series to January. Here, Billy Ray holds court on the place both men will occupy in history. Jeff Daniels plays Comey, Brendan Gleeson plays the man who fired him, and they are surrounded by a lauded cast to tell a story Ray says most viewers only think they know.
Deadline: You told James Comey when you first met him that you believed his decision to raise the alarm on Hillary Clinton’s emails again 11 days before the election allowed Donald Trump to win the 2016 election. Having immersed yourself in his decision-making process with this miniseries, how do you feel about it, and will he be remembered as being on the right side of history?...

Billy Ray is expecting Donald Trump will not be happy at how he is portrayed on Ray’s two-part Showtime miniseries “The Comey Rule.”
Though Ray began by stating that he “gave up predicting how Donald Trump would react to things about five years ago,” the writer and director of the upcoming miniseries added during Showtime’s virtual press day Thursday, “it’s likely the IRS will start auditing my taxes.”
“I have no idea how he will react. I imagine I will be on his radar,” Ray, who wrote and directed the upcoming miniseries, said Thursday during Showtime’s virtual press day. “I think it’s likely that the IRS will start auditing my taxes. But I think at the very least, I’m in for a mean nickname on Twitter.”
The series is based on former FBI director James Comey’s memoir, “A Higher Loyalty,” which was released in April 2018 by Flatiron Books.

The first character we hear speak in “The Comey Rule,” Showtime’s two-episode limited series about the unhappy tenure of the former FBI director launching Sept. 27, is not James Comey at all. (Fear not! It should come as no surprise that he’ll have plenty to say later.) Instead, it’s former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, played by Scoot McNairy, who starts us off, pulling Comey’s memoir “A Higher Loyalty” from a shelf and complaining about its author’s flair for self-dramatizing antics. “In governance, there are people who do the work and there are showboats,” Rosenstein says. “Jim was always a showboat.”
Not even most Comey fans might contest this point. Comey’s late reopening of the case against Hillary Clinton is seen by many (including the onetime candidate herself) as decisive in delivering the election to Donald Trump. But the man himself has tended to depict...

This week’s first virtual Democratic National Convention has come and gone, and “Jane the Virgin” star Jaime Camil was ready to recap all of its drama like it was “straight out of a telenovela.”

Showtime has moved up the premiere date of its upcoming miniseries “The Comey Rule” based on former FBI director James Comey’s memoir. It will air over two nights on Sept. 27 and 28.
Last week, Showtime announced that “The Comey Rule,” which stars Brendan Gleeson as President Donald Trump, would air in late November. The election is scheduled for Nov. 3. Showtime told TheWrap yesterday it was likely to move up.
Additionally, Showtime picked up the six-episode drama “We Hunt Together” from BBC Studios, which “explores the intoxication of sexual attraction and the dangerous power of emotional manipulation. As two conflicted detectives (Eve Myles and Babou Ceesay) track down a pair of deadly killers (Hermoine Corfield and Dipo Ola), the series reveals how finding a volatile form of solace in another can have dire consequences.” It will premiere on Aug. 9, moving back the Ethan Hunt-led “Good Lord Bird” to Oct. 4.
