Langley replaces Susan Rovner, chairman of the NBCU Television and Streaming’s Entertainment Content division, who is exiting the company.
Additionally, Mark Lazarus has been promoted to NBCUniversal Media Group chairman. Lazarus will continue to run the company’s TV networks, direct to consumer business, including Peacock, as well as the NBC Sports Group and NBC affiliate stations. In addition, he will oversee advertising sales, which will continue to report to interim chairman of global advertising and partnerships Mark Marshall, and content distribution, which will continue to report to the division’s chairman Matt Bond.

NBCUniversal, looking to pump up its Peacock subscriber numbers, inked a deal with DirecTV to offer the streamer to the pay-tv provider’s customers.
Beginning Thursday, customers of the broadband-delivered DirecTV Stream will be able to add Peacock Premium (with ads) directly to their bill for 2.99 per month, a 40 discount from the 4.99 retail price. According to the companies, the special discounted offer for Peacock Premium “will be extended to additional select DirecTV [satellite] customers in the coming weeks.” In addition, Peacock Premium Plus (without ads) will be available at the standard rate of 9.99/month to both DirecTV and DirecTV Stream subscribers.
For DirecTV, which spun off from AT&T last year, the addition of more over-the-top streaming services is an attempt to keep customers who may be on the fence about dropping their pay-tv service. Last week, DirecTV announced a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to offer Discovery+ with ads at the same 40 price discount.

An unlicensed “Making a Murderer” musical is set to have its world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland next month – without Netflix’s involvement.
“Making a Murderer: The Musical” is based on the story of Steven Avery, who is also the subject of Netflix docuseries “Making a Murderer.” The musical is written by BAFTA-winning writer Phil Mealey (“The Royle Family”), who admits he was inspired by the Netflix documentary.
“When I watched the documentary, like many others I was outraged at the way the system seemed stacked against Steven and his nephew Brendan,” said Mealey. “As a writer I saw so many astonishing twists and turns and intriguing characters that if this were written as an original story no-one would believe it was plausible.”
“Our intention is to highlight and parody the inconsistencies in the case where people with power have not used that power fairly or effectively.

Charter Communications is giving free access to Peacock Premium free for one year to Spectrum TV subscribers through its deal with Comcast’s NBCUniversal.
Also under the pact, Spectrum Internet customers are eligible to get Peacock Premium (normally $4.99/month) for 90 days at no additional cost. The Peacock promotions were included as part of the Charter-NBCU multiyear distribution deal reached a earlier this year.
The offer is available to eligible Charter customers starting Monday (Dec. 13). The offer will let Charter’s Spectrum TV and broadband customers stream tens of thousands of hours of movies and shows, live news and sports, and more from across NBCU’s portfolio and other sources. Peacock Premium, which includes ads, provides a more expansive bucket of content than the totally free, ad-supported version of Peacock.

NBCUniversal and Amazon just announced that Peacock will launch on Amazon Fire TV and Fire tablets in the U.S. starting Thursday.
The Peacock app will bring thousands of hours of on-demand movies and shows, as well as live news and sports programming, to Fire TV and Fire tablet customers nationwide. I hear the announcement, which was teased on social media yesterday, is part of a larger partnership between Amazon and NBCU, with more announcements coming soon.
It’s a significant breakthrough for the year-old streaming service, as Fire reaches more than 50 million U.S. households. The distribution deal fills in the last remaining gap in Peacock’s distribution. NBCU recently announced a pact with Samsung, the leading smart-tv maker, and last fall reached terms with Roku, the top streaming gateway.
The news comes just a month before the start of NBCU’s Tokyo Olympics coverage, in which Peacock will play a key role.

NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock will expand nationally tomorrow with 13,000 hours of programming available for free and 20,000 on its premium subscription tier.
The company on Tuesday offered its first breakdown of programming available on the free and premium tiers. (Deadline TV Editor Peter White has more programming details here.) Peacock Premium costs $5 a month, though it is effectively free for many initial customers, including those of NBCU parent Comcast. Both free and subscription tiers carry ads, though subscribers can also pay another $5 a month for an ad-free version.
Peacock first launched April 15 in the Comcast Xfinity footprint, both on X1 pay-tv systems and the broadband video offering Flex. Its national expansion caps a run of major streaming debuts, from Apple TV+ and Disney+ last November through Quibi and HBO Max in May, as media and tech companies chase streaming incumbents like Netflix and Amazon.

Peacock, the NBCUniversal streaming service initially launched in April, has set a distribution deal with Google for its national expansion in July.
Google platforms and devices spanning Android, Android TV and Chromecast will begin carrying Peacock on July 15. Starting then, Peacock will offer a free tier featuring more than 7,500 hours of movies and TV programming. The higher level, Peacock Premium, will have 15,000 hours of content, and Android and Android TV users will get Premium for free until October 15.
After the promotion ends, Peacock Premium subscribers will pay $5 a month, with an option to upgrade to an ad-free tier for another $5 a month.
Peacock’s rollout was always planned as a two-step process, with an early release favoring Comcast subscribers and then a national debut, with the latter initially timed to the Summer Olympics. Peacock, the streaming service launched last month by NBCUniversal for Comcast subscribers, has set a deal with Apple to be available across the tech giant’s devices when it launches in July.
The distribution partnership is the first one beyond Cox Communications to be announced by NBCU for the July 15 national rollout.
Initially, Comcast and NBCU were hoping to use the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a major promotional platform to drive customer adoption this summer. The Games were shifted to 2021 due to the effects of Covid-19.
The distribution agreement covers the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV for Peacock’s national debut on July 15. At that stage it will have a free, ad-supported tier with 7,500 hours of TV and movie content live and on demand. For $5 a month (for non-Comcast customers), viewers can upgrade to the premium level, which will have 15,000 hours of programming. An additional $5 a month brings subscribers an ad-free version.

Turns out, preparation is not always key — at least not when it comes to Oscars speeches.
Twitter immediately reacted after the winners of the Best Hair and Makeup category stumbled through their acceptance speech at the 2019 Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.
When Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe, Patricia Dehaney-Le May took the stage to accept the award for their work on the film Vice, they attempted to share speech duties by taking turns reading off a sheet of paper.
But within seconds, the group lost track of who was supposed to be reading, leading to a rather awkward acceptance speech.
