Following the success of their feature debut, the horror film Talk to Me, the directing duo of Danny and Michael Philippou signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise, started developing a Talk to Me sequel titled Talk 2 Me, and let it be known that they had already shot some sort of Talk to Me prequel (but it’s not clear if or when we’ll get to see that footage), had an action drama project they’d like to make, and also had a horror script called Bring Her Back that they wanted to get into production. Now Deadline has confirmed that Bring Her Back is heading into production and will be made before Talk 2 Me or Street Fighter, with two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins of The Shape of Water and Blue Jasmine signed on to star in the film.

When the character Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut back in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the idea was that we’d be seeing the character again the following year in her own Disney+ show Ironheart… but 2023 came and went without Ironheart, and the show still doesn’t have an official premiere date. This has caused some fans to speculate that Marvel and Disney+ might have decided to scrap Ironheart, along with the series Wonder Man, which had Yahya Abdul-Mateen II taking on the role of the title character, who is also known as Simon Williams and hasn’t been seen in the MCU yet. But no, Ironheart and Wonder Man are not being scrapped, and in a new interview with Agents of Fandom, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum described the shows as spectacular, amazing, and different.

We know for sure that Danny and Michael Philippou, the sibling directing duo behind the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at This Link, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above) are going to be making a sequel to that movie. The film not only racked up over $90 million at the global box office, it also earned praise from the likes of Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Jordan Peele, George Miller, and Ari Aster… so it was no surprise when A24 announced they had given a greenlight to the a follow-up, titled Talk 2 Me. But while the sequel moves ahead, one person who still doesn’t know if they’re going to be involved with it is Talk to Me star Sophie Wilde.
Talk to Me marked the feature directorial debut of the Philippou brothers, who have a following of over 6 million subscribers on their YouTube channel RackaRacka.

Adelaide teens take an occult party game too far in this terrific debut from Australian YouTube celebrities (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou. Inventive, creepy and confidently directed, it’s one of the best horror films of the year.
After a deeply disturbing prologue, shot in an impressive single take, the film centres on Mia (Sophie Wilde), who’s grown more and more distant from her father (Marcus Johnson) since the traumatic loss of her mother, two years previously. Accordingly, Mia spends most of her time at her best friend Jade’s (Alexandra Jensen) house, which is slightly awkward, because Jade is dating Mia’s ex-boyfriend, Daniel (Otis Dhanji).

A24 hit big with their acclaimed horror movie Talk to Me earlier this year, which is now available on Digital outlets with a 4K and Blu-ray release set for October 3, 2023.
In celebration of the film’s Digital release today, A24 has also put up for grabs a screen-accurate replica of the “Party Hand” from Talk to Me, and it’s available now in their shop!
In the film, the mysterious prop is said to be the severed, embalmed hand of a powerful medium, and it’s used to conjure spirits. The basic gist is that you hold the hand and speak the words “talk to me” aloud, inviting in whatever the hell decides to come through from the other side. From there, you can let go of the hand or let the spirit inside of you. The latter option is essentially the film’s unique version of getting high, becoming...

"Barbie" isn't really queer cinema ... but it's also not not queer cinema. Indeed, director Greta Gerwig and her collaborators fill their billion-dollar blockbuster (Barbiebuster?) with cheeky innuendos, like having Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu's Kens threaten to "beach" each other off, or Gosling's Ken being checked out by a man when he and Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) are skating around Venice Beach. In fact, the Kens are more than just a little camp in general, from their incredibly colorful attire to the way they romp around Barbieland pantomiming that they're riding horses "Monty Python"-style.
That being said, there's no explicitly sexual material in "Barbie," assuming the moment where two Kens give Gosling's Ken a peck on his (facial) cheeks during the "I'm Just Ken" musical number doesn't count. Nevertheless, the film has been unexpectedly banned in the countries Kuwait and Oman -- places that, according to the Los Angeles Times,...

“Barbie” just got kicked out of Algeria.
The billion-dollar Greta Gerwig film has been pulled from Algerian cinemas after the government’s culture ministry requested all screenings cease due to the film’s alleged promotion of gay themes.
An official source told Reuters that the film “promotes homosexuality and other Western deviances” and “does not comply with Algeria’s religious and cultural beliefs.”
Private news site 24H Algérie first reported the ban, citing that the Algerian government told local distributor MD Ciné and cinema chains that “Barbie” was being removed for “damaging morals.”
Warner Bros. declined to comment.
The film has also been banned in Kuwait due to how it “promulgate[s] ideas and beliefs that are alien to Kuwaiti society and public order” per the BBC (via Reuters). To note, Kuwait recently barred A24 horror film “Talk to Me” from release due to non-binary star Zoe Terakes.

Whether it’s one of the many stars in this summer’s blockbuster, or the bratty bully in Talk to Me, trans stars are showing up on cinema screens. And the big deal is that it’s no big deal
The last few weeks have quietly seen a significant and mostly unremarked flowering of on-screen trans visibility, to the extent we might consider cinema is at a tipping point for trans acting. In Barbie, Talk to Me and Red, White and Royal Blue, three films on worldwide release at the same time offer vastly different declensions of trans representation at a time when trans rights are being rolled back around the world. This variety of depictions, from billion-banking blockbusters to breakout hits and cult concerns, has raised few eyebrows from audiences, giving a few clues as to cinema’s ability to provide hope as to public views on trans people.

Last week, we shared a quote from Danny and Michael Philippou, the sibling directing duo behind the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at This Link, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above), where they said they wouldn’t be able to resist making a sequel to their film if they were given the opportunity. Now Deadline reports that they are getting that opportunity. The Philippous are officially working with A24 on a sequel titled Talk 2 Me!
Danny Philippou previously said that he already had scenes and set pieces in mind for a follow-up, so it sounds like he’s going to be able to bring them to the screen now. He wrote the screenplay for Talk to Me with Bill Hinzman, who just happens to share a name with the late actor who played the Cemetery Ghoul in George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead...

Directed by brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, the horror movie Talk to Me has scared up an impressive $26 million worldwide for A24 in the last couple weeks, and Bloody Disgusting has learned this afternoon that a sequel is already on the way!
Danny and Michael Philippou will return to direct Talk to Me 2 for A24! The Australian duo got their start with the popular YouTube channel RackaRacka, launched back in 2013.
Danny Philippou is writing the screenplay with Bill Hinzman (Talk to Me).
Talk to Me was made on a reported production budget of just $4.5 million, which the movie was able to earn back in its first day of release. A24 acquired the film out of Sundance for a reported “high seven figures,” and it looks like that gamble is paying off big time for them.

Kuwait in an usual move had banned the Australian horror film ‘Talk To Me’ on Friday due to it featuring a trans actor. In response, Zoe Terakes, who identifies herself as trans, gave out a statement saying there are no LGBTQ themes in the movie, and that they are just an actor who got the role.
In a statement on X, Terakes talking about the ban said: “Our film doesn’t have queer themes. I am a trans actor who happened to get the role. I’m not a theme. I’m a person”.
They added, “Kuwait has banned this film due to my identity alone. It is a targeted and dehumanising means to harm me.”

Trans actor Zoe Terakes called the news that censors in Kuwait banned their latest film “Talk to Me” a “heartbreaking” move, lamenting how such censorship harms LGBTQ individuals in the Middle Eastern country.
Terakes, who identifies as nonbinary and transmasculine, plays a teen who regularly attends parties in which partygoers use a cursed ceramic hand to summon dead spirits, with deadly consequences for those who use the hand for more than 90 seconds.
In a statement posted to Instagram on Sunday, Terakes noted that “Talk to Me” does not have any explicit LGBTQ themes like past films that have been banned in Kuwait, nor does their character share their trans identity.

As Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” flies past $1 billion at the worldwide box office, the film has nabbed an official theatrical release in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Those are the two biggest regions in the Middle East in terms of overall theatrical box office. This follows a delay in several Middle Eastern countries from July 19 to Aug. 31.
That news spurred chatter that the Margot Robbie-Ryan Gosling blockbuster might get outright banned in the region. TheWrap has confirmed that it’s now set to open Thursday in Saudia Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The reason for the delay was reportedly related to LGBTQ-related narration and dialogue. While “Barbie” features several openly LGBTQ performers, such as Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Scott Evans and Hari Nef, the PG-13 feature contains little-to-no explicit LGBTQ content.
A Warner Bros. rep didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment...

“Talk to Me” producers are speaking up against Kuwait banning the A24 film over non-binary and trans masculine star Zoe Terakes.
The horror film was banned in Kuwait over the gender identity of Terakes, which is not referenced in the movie. Production company Causeway Films and sales agent Bankside Films issued a joint statement to The Hollywood Reporter in response to the Kuwait release ban.
“We stand in solidarity with Zoe Terakes following the decision by Kuwait to ban the film ‘Talk to Me’,” the statement reads. “Zoe has made their own statement, which we fully support, and we are immensely proud of their involvement in the film.”
Actor Terakes took to Instagram to address the discrimination in Kuwait. “Talk to Me” is the first film to be barred from release in Kuwaity over the gender or sexual identity of an actor rather than queer themes onscreen.

The Barbie juggernaut is — finally — set to reach the Gulf.
The Hollywood Reporter can confirm that the film — which has already passed $1 billion at the global box office — is set to be released in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates this Thursday, ending weeks of speculation that Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking blockbuster would join a growing list of films to be banned.
THR understands that the film had originally been due for release across the region in line with its worldwide rollout on July 21. However, when local censors suggested a number of small edits, this date was pushed back to Aug. 31. While the move did destroy chances of Gulf cinemas getting to experience the so-called “Barbenheimer” phenomenon (Oppenheimer took full advantage and stormed to the top of box offices in its first week), it did presumably give both the censors and Barbie studio Warner Bros. ample time to iron out any issues.

Terakes, who plays a character whose gender is never mentioned in the film, called the decision ‘targeted and dehumanising’
The hit Australian horror film Talk To Me has been banned from screening in Kuwait, reportedly solely over the casting of non-binary trans actor Zoe Terakes, who plays a character whose gender identity is never mentioned in the film.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported on the decision, which they confirmed was based entirely on the presence of Terakes, an Australian actor who identifies as non-binary and trans-masculine. A rising star who has appeared in Wentworth and Nine Perfect Strangers, they are also the first trans actor to be cast in a Marvel TV series, with a role in the upcoming superhero show Ironheart. The Guardian has confirmed the decision independently.

Causeway Films, the producer of horror feature Talk to Me, and its sales agent Bankside Films have issued a joint statement in support of the film’s star Zoe Terakes. While many films have been banned in Kuwait for the inclusion of LGBT themes or references, this title is the first to be blocked from release over the gender identity of a castmember, something not referenced in the story, and could represent the start of a worrying trend going forward when it comes to LGBTQ talent.

Let's get something out of the way: Kuwait, and other countries within the Gulf, ban films all the time for featuring Lgbtqia+ characters and themes. Best Picture winner "Everything Everywhere All At Once" was banned for Joy's queerness (and moments like the butt-plug battle), "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" was banned for Gwen and her father's trans pride flags, "West Side Story" was banned for making the tomboy member of the Jets into a canonical trans character, and Marvel's "Eternals" was banned after refusing to cut its gay elements. At this point, it's not a surprise to read a headline about a film being banned in a region ruled by an oppressive regime, but in the case of the buzzy A24 horror film "Talk to Me," the ban is not about content, but a casting choice.
The film is not being banned because it's legitimately horrifying and features extreme moments, but...

Australian supernatural horror film Talk to Me has been blocked from release in Kuwait, which is considered to be the region’s strictest market when it comes to censors. And while that might not cause much of a surprise, the reported reason could.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the decision to ban Talk to Me, which has been both a critical and commercial hit internationally and became A24’s second biggest domestic opening after Hereditary with $10 million, has nothing to do with the contents of the film. Instead, it concerns the identity of its star Zoe Terakes, who identifies as nonbinary and trans masculine, and confirmed news of their gender confirming surgery in 2022. Last year it was also announced that Terakes would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first transgender actor when they were cast in the the TV series Ironheart.

A few days ago, we shared a snippet of a Hollywood Reporter interview with Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at This Link, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above), in which they said they wouldn’t be able to resist making a sequel if they are given the opportunity. Now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed an even more exciting bit of news: the Philippou brothers have already filmed a prequel to Talk to Me!
Talk to Me features a character named Duckett, played by Sunny Johnson – and when The Hollywood Reporter directly asked the Philippous if they have been talked about making a Duckett prequel, Danny answered, “We actually shot an entire Duckett prequel already. It’s told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, so maybe down the line we can release that.

A24 gave the Australian horror film Talk to Me a theatrical release this past weekend – and while the movie was expected to draw in around 4 to 5 million, it actually exceeded expectations and had an opening weekend of $10 million. That’s very good for a movie that reportedly had a budget of $4.5 million, and could be the first step on the path to a sequel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, directors Danny and Michael Philippou, who have a following of over 6 million subscribers on their YouTube channel RackaRacka, said they wouldn’t be able to resist making a sequel if they are given the opportunity.

A24 released their latest critically acclaimed new horror movie Talk to Me in 2,340 theaters here in the United States over the weekend, with early projections anticipating a roughly $5 million domestic total for the opening weekend. But positive word of mouth and strong buzz allowed the film to shatter those expectations, scaring up $10 million over the weekend.
The official number for the weekend is $10,028,632, giving Talk to Me the #6 placement on the domestic box office charts during the #Barbenheimer phenomenon’s second weekend.
Directed by brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, Talk to Me was made on a reported production budget of just $4.5 million, which the movie was able to earn back in its first day of release. Important to note, however, that A24 acquired the film out of Sundance for a reported “high seven figures,” and the company also spent a good deal of money to market the release.

As the box office behemoth that is Barbenheimer crushes Disney's ill-timed release of "Haunted Mansion" beneath its wheels, it's easy to think that any movie would be foolish to go up against "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" in their second weekend. But while "Haunted Mansion" is battling "Barbie" for family audiences with its PG-13 Disney theme park-based scares, another horror movie has found quiet success in its debut this weekend: "Talk to Me," the supernatural terrorfest from Australian directors Danny and Michael Philippou.
The film might not look like a success story at first glance. Per The Hollywood Reporter, "Talk to Me" will rank in sixth place at the box office in its opening weekend, with an estimated debut in the $9 million to $9.5 million range. But while "Haunted Mansion" landed third place with its projected opening weekend total of around $25 million, it's buckling under the weight of a $150 million production budget. "Talk to Me,...

Children shouldn’t play with dead things: not just the title of a low-budget American horror from 1972 but words to live by, especially in this unnerving and highly effective Midnight entry from Australia. But though it employs some familiar tropes — high-schoolers dabble in the occult and soon begin to wish they hadn’t — Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou’s film Talk to Me does attempt to do something new with an old idea, for one thing making the crossing of infernal thresholds seem like an awful lot of fun.
From the start, the most striking thing is that there’s not much in the way of a preamble and very little lip service to genre traditions. The Philippous are respectful enough of modern audiences to...

As the Summer is reaching its final weeks are you looking for a super cool fun activity that will take your big late-night party to another level? Sure, “Spin the Bottle” and “Five Minutes in Heaven” are a bit of naughty fun, but where’s the danger? There’s certainly none in the classic board games (moving an icon from one square to the next) or the variations of pantomime. Aha, there’s the creepy ole’ Ouija board, but that’s too old-fashioned. Perhaps that’s why the kids in this flick from “down under” have come up with something that’s more of a direct “channel” to the “other side”. Plus it’s got a limited length, so it makes for an ideal online video. Now once the needed props are set up, the participants only need to recall a couple of commands, beginning with “Talk To Me”. Then watch out!

Loss and grief bring a lot of changes to one's life, more than it may initially appear. It's a personal, grim reminder of the final destination that awaits us all, a full-on wake-up call that it can and will happen to you. As much as a death by natural causes hangs over every human being, the specter of unnatural death looms even larger; not just for reasons of unfairness, but because it implies an additional amount of pain and suffering coming along with it.
Thus, it's a natural impulse for most people (and especially young people) to not so much confront their fears but to dismiss, belittle and mock them, in the hopes that they'll be sufficiently diminished. In YouTube stars Danny and Michael Philippou's debut feature, "Talk to Me," the world of the dead is treated as something to be laughed at,...
