Ons Jabeur expressed some frustration after her 2024 Roland Garros defeat to Coco Gauff, admitting she would have liked a later start to her match.
The two quarter-final protagonists stepped out early to compete for a semi-final spot. Their match began at 11 a.m. local time, which wasn't that thrilling for Jabeur. She played a really strong opening set to go up 1-0 but then got outplayed in the following two sets to lose the match in three sets.
She was quite frustrated by losing the match, and she left out some of her grievances towards the end. The Tunisian admitted that she wouldn't have minded playing a night match instead of an 11 a.m. start.
"I would have loved a quarter-final at night, not at 11:00 am. For me, doesn't make sense. I wish I can see the contract time between both Prime and here to know what's the deal there.

Coco Gauff was able to reach her third consecutive major semi-final, beating Ons Jabeur at the 2024 Roland Garros.
It was a quarter-final of the French Open, meaning that the winner would be in the semi-final, likely against no other than the biggest favorite of the tournament - Iga Swiatek. Still, that's just one step away from the final, and two great players were going head-to-head in what was a fascinating battle.
The opening set was very close because both players had no issues with their serve at the start. Jabeur applied heavy pressure towards the end of the set, resulting in a break of her opponent's serve.
She was playing her peak tennis, hitting incredible winners, slices, and drop shots for the whole duration of the set, winning it 6-4. However, Gauff flipped the script in the second set completely as she played a good set of tennis.

Coco Gauff will take on Ons Jabeur for a spot in the 2024 Roland Garros semi-final, which would be a first for her opponent.
This is a proper semi-final delight in the French capital because two very good tennis players who have a lot to offer will clash, very likely on the Court Phlippe-Chatrier.
On the one side, there is Jabeur, who is a wonderful watch with all her variety and ability to hit some incredible shots. She's going to have plenty of fans backing her and plays really well on clay, generally.
On the other side, there is Gauff, who has looked quite impressive so far in Paris and is generally a very tough matchup on clay. She's quick, capable of defending well, and is generally quite hard to beat, no matter the opponent's style.
Head-to-head:

Charlize Theron is often front-row at tennis matches and fashion shows — but on Tuesday, she was on the court, playing doubles with No. 1 men’s player Novak Djokovic.
The Oscar winner hosted the 20th annual Desert Smash celebrity tennis tournament to support her charity, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. The organization funds community-based, locally led groups that work directly with young people in preventing gender-based violence, advocating for sexual reproductive health and rights, and providing access to higher education. For the final match, the Serbian tennis superstar made a surprise appearance, interrupting Theron’s game with Atp champion Frances Tiafoe, comedian Yvonne Orji and two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka.

Last year, Netflix's tennis documentary Break Point offered both fun and frustration to fans who were eager to see the sport's young talent introduced to a broader audience. Following closely along with players like Ons Jabeur, Frances Tiafoe, and Iga Swiatek as they ascended to the upper echelons of pro tennis was illuminating, but the year-long lag between filming and airing held the show back from being a true and vital companion to the ongoing tennis season.

Ons Jabeur is known as a very good and very cheerful tennis player but behind the contagious smile is a dedicated worker who endured quite a few unfortunate events.
Jabeur's story is pretty well-known to most tennis fans. A trailblazer from Tunisia who hopes to inspire across the Arab world. It took her a long time to work herself to the top of the Wta Tour, but she's made it and is certainly one of the best players in the world.
Getting there took a lot of hard work and hardships, but she's powered through with a bubbly personality that allowed her to keep smiling in spite of all of that. Much of this was known, but quite a few things were revealed in a 90-minute documentary about her life, which also featured some shocking revelations.

The first Grand Slam tournament of the 2024 season is on the horizon, and the entry list for the women's edition of the Australian Open has been released.
Running from January 14th to 28th, next year's Australian Open will have a historic Sunday start. One hundred twenty-eight women will compete in the biggest party of Australian summer, but only one player will be lucky enough to emerge from the fortnight with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.
The Australian Open is played on outdoor hard courts at its famed home - Melbourne Park. It's been ten years since there was a successful title defense in the women's tournament, so is that trend likely to continue, or will Belarus Aryna Sabalenka defend the crown she won 12 months ago?

Ons Jabeur described the 2023 Wimbledon final loss as the toughest one of her career, and now we know why that is.
Ons Jabeur contested three Grand Slam finals in her career and didn't win a single one. The first one was the Wimbledon final last year against Elena Rybakina, where she was favored. She won the first set but then lost the next two and lost the match.
Her second chance would come later that year at the US Open, but once again, it was a losing effort. This time around, it wasn't even particularly close. The next chance came this year at Wimbledon again.
She actually felt quite confident leading up to the event and was the overwhelming favorite, but then fell against a player who didn't have much success on the grass before that event.
To say that it crushed her would be an understatement, and she said so herself.

Many tennis players succeed in their junior days and win a Grand Slam in that category, but does it guarantee success on the main Tour?
Forming any rapid conclusions based on junior Grand Slam results is risky business. Of the active Wta players who have won a junior Grand Slam until 2020, only six of them - from a list of 47 players - have won a major on the main tour.
Almost half of these 47 players achieved a career-best ranking of World No. 20 or higher. From the same data, it is striking that most players who won one of Roland Garros or Wimbledon went on to scale even greater heights at the Wta level.
About 16 players who won either of those tournaments broke the Top 20 at some point. This includes players like Iga Swiatek, Simona Halep, Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Paula Badosa, Belinda Bencic, and Elina Svitolina.

Aryna Sabalenka bested Ons Jabeur in a prestigious exhibition match played at the 2023 Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia.
The two players probably got the best possible preparation for the new season, as they got to play an exhibition match during the 2023 Riyadh Season at the exhibition called the Tennis Cup, which will also see Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz face off.
Before traveling to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Sabalenka competed at the 2023 World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi, where she managed to beat even current world no. 1, Iga Swiatek.
Now, she played the sixth highest-ranked player on the Wta Tour, and the match certainly did not disappoint fans who came to watch it or even those who streamed the Tennis Cup live.
Early on, it seemed that it would be a one-sided affair, as the Belarusian came out firing, winning the first game on her serve and having a 40-15 lead...

Aryna Sabalenka has been described as a raw power hitter ever since she entered tennis, and she certainly backed that up in 2023.
Not so long ago, we heard how tennis was shifting to a more power-based approach. It made sense because all of the players that were at the top mostly focused on hitting the ball as strongly as possible.
There are advantages to that as well. Most serves in women's tennis are not that powerful, and it allows you to attack. If you're able to attack with force and early, you're basically guaranteed the point.
It's how Serena Williams could dominate for as long as she did in sport. She simply had more power than anybody else and bullied her opponents on the court consistently.
Jelena Ostapenko has played like that for years, as has Sabalenka, who is probably known as the player with the most power right now.

The 2024 Australian Open will be one of the most riveting Grand Slams in recent memory, given the myriad of contenders.
There has not been a successful title defense at this tournament since 2013, so Aryna Sabalenka could have her hands full when she returns to Melbourne.
But incidentally, the last woman to win back-to-back Australian Opens was a Belarusian (Victoria Azarenka), so this could be a good omen for Sabalenka.

Iga Swiatek once again proved to be a dominant force in 2023, but her reign was seriously challenged and will be challenged again in 2024.

Women's tennis could experience a major shakeup in rankings next season, with plenty of interesting names expected to make their mark.

One of the stats of the 2023 Wta season showcased Iga Swiatek's unwavering dominance that cemented her spot as the world's top-ranked woman for the second year in a row.
Swiatek won Roland Garros for a third time in June thanks to an epic win over first-time Grand Slam finalist Karolina Muchova in three pulsating sets. She extended her unbeaten streak in Grand Slam finals to 4-0 and is now part of a very exclusive list of players to achieve this feat.
The 22-year-old from Warsaw is just the third Wta player in the Open Era and fourth overall across both tours to win their first four Grand Slams finals. Swiatek has won more French Opens than Maria Sharapova and Martina Navratilova and has drawn level with Serena Williams.

Ons Jabeur may have fallen short in her quest to become the first African woman to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era, but she did not leave the Wta Awards Week emptyhanded.
The Tunisian trailblazer won two awards during the Wta's annual prize-giving celebration that rewards the best-performing players and coaches in terms of match results and those who went above and beyond in contributing to every facet of the sport.
The self-proclaimed "Minister of Happiness" won the Karen Sportsmanship Award for the second year and the Peachy Kellmeyer Player Service Award for the first time. She is the first Wta player to bag two year-end season awards since Kim Clijsters.
The Sportsmanship Award is bestowed upon the Wta player who demonstrated exemplary ethical behavior on and off the court, abiding by the rules of fair play, respecting her peers, and being gracious and considerate.

World No. 5 Jessica Pegula and the defending champion Ons Jabeur have signed up to play the 2024 Charleston Open in South Carolina.
The Charleston Open is synonymous with being the oldest all-women's tennis tournament in the United States, having been a staple on the Wta calendar since its inception in 1973 (except 2020 due to Covid-19), the same year the women's governing body was formed.
A host of the world's greatest tennis players on the Wta tour have played and won this tournament in the past, such as Chris Evert (eight-time champion), Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, and Serena Williams.
In 2022, the tournament commemorated its 50th year of staging the event at Daniel Island by unveiling its renovated Credit One Stadium, which offered significant upgrades in seating options and enhanced hospitality experiences.

Coco Gauff had a really strong 2023 campaign, which saw her climb to the top of the list of highest-paid female athletes.
Women's sports are growing with every year, and tennis is one of the leading sports. You only need to look at the highest-paid athletes in the world published by Sportico to see where tennis stands.
The two top earners are both tennis players. Iga Swiatek didn't emerge on top of this list, though, as the Polish superstar is only second behind Coco Gauff. Both did really well for themselves, of course, as Swiatek dominated the Wta Tour and accumulated $9.9 million in prize money.
She added 12 million in endorsements, bringing the total to $21.9 million. Gauff still edged her out, thanks to her endorsement deals. The American earned $16 million from them while adding $6.6 million in prize money for a total of $22.7 million.

Despite missing the whole calendar year due to a doping ban, Simona Halep surprisingly ranked 13th in the latest Utr rankings.
The Utr (Universal Tennis Rating) is a global rating system that provides a real and accurate measurement of the skill level of all tennis players regardless of age, gender, or location of any match they play. It has a rating scale between 1.00 to 16.50.
A player with an index of 1.00 is usually a beginner, while a high-level pro normally has a double-digit rating. The Utr gives the greatest weighting to match results and considers the quality of opposition a player will face rather than the number of matches they play.
So, in hindsight, the higher the Utr, the greater the skill level. Utr differs from official rankings, which is why Simona Halep, currently unranked in the Wta rankings due to her inactivity ( banned for up to four years for doping...

Ons Jabeur will return to Abu Dhabi Open for the first time in over a year, to compete in the Wta 500 event held in the UAE's capital city.
The Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open has been a mainstay on the women's calendar and is the first of three stops of the Middle East swing next February. It will commemorate its third edition in 2024 and has landed the most prominent Arab tennis player in the world.
Jabeur played in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Open in 2021 and reached the third round stage, where she lost to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. She was ranked just outside the world's Top 30 at the time and was embarking on the trajectory to become the player she is today.
Last year, she missed the tournament due to a knee injury and had to undergo a minor surgery that ruled her out from Doha and Dubai as well.

Russia's precociously talented teenager Mirra Andreeva has been nominated for the 2023 Wta Newcomer of the Year award alongside four other breakout stars.
The five-player shortlist includes three teenagers, namely Andreeva, Linda Noskova, and Diana Shnaider. At 16, Andreeva is the youngest of the bunch. This award category aims to crown the player who made a Top 100 breakthrough during the season and punched well above her weight.
In the case of Andreeva, she certainly ticked all the boxes. Of all the Top 100 players, the 16-year-old made the biggest surge within a 12-month span, vaulting 359 spots to break the world's Top 50.
Having finished runner-up at the Australian Open girl's singles tournament, she commenced her professional career by winning two W60 Itf titles. Andreeva scored four Top 20 wins this season and her career highlight thus far came at Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round.
Second on the list is another Russian teenager, Diana Shnaider.

Ons Jabeur endured more heartbreak this year by losing in the Wimbledon final, but she's backed to finally get it done in 2024 by former Wta player Martina Navratilova.
The career of Ons Jabeur has been fascinating to observe. She is a late bloomer struggling to find her footing early on in her career. With time and hard work, Jabeur worked her way to the top of tennis, where she's been for a few years now.
She belongs at the top as she made her way to three Grand Slam finals so far in her career but lost all of them. It was pretty heartbreaking, especially the Wimbledon one this year, as she faced a player who was not known as a great grass player.
She lamented her heartbreak about Wimbledon many times this year and it makes sense. Everybody was ready to hand her the trophy, but Marketa Vondrousova had other plans.

Anett Kontaveit played a tennis match one last time over the weekend in her native Estonia against her good friend Ons Jabeur.
Kontaveit pulled the plug on her playing career earlier this year when she revealed the heartbreaking news. She announced that Wimbledon would be her last professional tournament on the circuit.
At the age of 27, it was one of the most upsetting tennis retirements in recent memory, more so for a career so cruelly ended with a degenerative back injury that left Kontaveit wincing in pain in every movement.
Kontaveit wanted a proper sendoff despite having played her last pro match at Wimbledon in July. And there was no better place than home in front of a jam-packed stadium in Tallinn, her home city.
It was a fitting way to bow out and play an opponent of her choosing who is a trailblazer in her own right. Kontaveit played World No.

Aryna Sabalenka may have relinquished the No. 1 ranking after just eight weeks, but there is one chart in which she outscored the rest of the tour.
It is easy to forget that Sabalenka led Swiatek in the Wta race in 43 of 44 weeks this season, but we cannot deny she was the Wta's big-stage player in 2023. And there is no bigger battleground than the Grand Slams.
For many years, the Belarusian was treading dangerously on the path of underachievers, having come tantalizingly close to breaking her Grand Slam duck but stumbled when a couple of steps was all she needed.
With renewed vigor and unwavering confidence, Sabalenka was determined to change her track record in Grand Slams. And it all started from the first ball she struck in the Australian summer series.
Sabalenka won the Wta 500 in Adelaide, a result that gave her the platform to go on record in Melbourne.

Iga Swiatek won this year's Wta Finals and truncated Coco Gauff's huge lead in the Olympics Race.
The Polish star reclaimed the World No. 1 ranking after besting the eight-woman field in Cancun, Mexico, to win the prestigious season-ending championships for the first time. Swiatek walked away with the full 1,500 points on offer for going undefeated during the week.
Her dominant title win was historic for a number of reasons. At 22, she became the youngest Wta Finals champion in 12 years and broke Serena Williams' decade-long record of dropping the fewest games to win the title by some margin (only lost 20 games).
Among the impressive feats she conjured in Cancun, Swiatek's performance in the final match was simply breathtaking. She completed a rout over World No. 5 Jessica Pegula, in the most one-sided championship match in Wta Finals history.

Coco Gauff will be playing in her maiden semifinals at the Wta Finals after she qualified thanks to multiple things going her way.
The easiest way to qualify for the semifinals at the Wta Finals is to win all three round-robin matches, but because all of the players competing are in the Top 8, it's not that simple. Yet, Iga Swiatek managed to do that this year , and so did Jessica Pegula.
But Gauff's journey wasn't so simple. She lost to Iga Swiatek , and because of that, she wasn't certain to make it to the semifinals, especially after she lost the opening set of the match against Marketa Vondrousova.
Eventually, the American won in three sets , but she still needed Ons Jabeur not to win her match in two sets . That didn't happen, meaning that the 19-year-old made it to her maiden Wta Finals semifinal.

Less than a month ago, it was reported that a high number of Top 20 players table a formal letter to the Wta with a list of demands.
Chief among those demands was the subject of prize money and improvement in players' welfare. The report has been verified by the Athletic who confirmed that a three-page document, single-spaced letter was ratified by at least 20 of the leading Wta players.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka together with Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova led the revolt by affixing their signatures following meetings held in the early days of October at the China Open.

Coco Gauff still can make it to the semifinals at the 2023 Wta Finals, and that's thanks to the unique format of the competition.

Ons Jabeur lost a few times to Marketa Vondrousova this year, but she won at the 2023 Wta Finals quite comfortably.
Vondrousova handed Jabeur one of the toughest defeats of her career when she bested her earlier this year at Wimbledon. It was a match Jabeur was widely expected to win, but it didn't happen.
She finally got her revenge at the Wta Finals , and it was a pretty convincing win for the Tunisian. Her first match against Gauff a few days ago was not good , as she was all over the place.
Today was kind of similar, but she was still far better than Vondrousova, who struggled immensely the entire day. She wasn't very good against Iga Swiatek either , so this isn't a huge surprise.
Control was the biggest problem, as she couldn't find the right angles on anything. Her serve was off as she committed a few double faults.

Coco Gauff hit four consecutive double faults in her match against Iga Swiatek at the 2023 Wta Finals, and it cost her the match.
The 19-year-old American is one of the biggest talents the sport has ever seen, but as every player, she's developing and learning every day, and at the 2023 Wta Finals , she certainly learned a lot about the mental side of the game.
After crushing Ons Jabeur in her opening match at the year-end tournament in Cancun, the teenager met the world no. 2, Iga Swiatek . Although the Pole dominated this matchup before, Gauff recently showed that she could beat her, and she wanted to show that again.
However, in the opening set, Swiatek showed why she's "one of the best players of her generation," and didn't allow her opponent to do anything, beating her comfortably 6-0.
But Gauff never gave up, like she never does. She showed her qualities in the second set,...

It's a new week, but Coco Gauff 's dominance in the Olympics Race shows no signs of waning.
The American teenager superstar has earned 4,200 points since the race began in mid-June, thanks largely to her three title triumphs on US hard courts which included a maiden Grand Slam title in New York . Gauff leads second-placed Iga Swiatek by 1,340 points ahead of the Wta Finals.
Marketa Vondrousova is in third place and is currently the Czech Republic's top-ranked player. The bulk of her 2,835 points came from her shock Wimbledon success in July . The lefty is ahead of World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka by just 30 points.
Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys are two of three American women inside the Top 10 in the Olympics Race (along with Gauff). One nation can only be represented by a maximum of four of its best-ranked players in the 64-player draw.
African hopes will be shouldered by Tunisia's...

Coco Gauff has already achieved so much in tennis that we almost forget that she's still technically a teenager and, as of last night, the first teenager since Venus Williams to win a Wta Finals match.
Tennis has always had brilliant young players who seemingly emerge overnight and establish themselves as one of the best players in the world. At the same time, every era of tennis had that it's not that common.
There are many ways to demonstrate that, but historical stats are certainly the best one. For example, Coco Gauff is the first American teenager to win a match at the Wta Finals since Venus Williams did that in 1999.
It's been a while, but we haven't had that many great American teenagers since then. Gauff is the most recent one but also probably one of the most experienced ones.
Don't forget that she broke out as a 15-year-old...

Coco Gauff hired Pere Riba over the summer, and for a while, it looked great; however, they are not working together anymore.
This was rather shocking news to many in the community, especially in the manner it was announced. During her match at the Wta Finals against Ons Jabeur, Chanda Rubin and Lindsay Davenport dropped the news that Gauff was not working with Pere Riba anymore.
She hired him leading up to Wimbledon after some good recommendations by other players. He was quite a modern voice in Gauff's camp, pushing her to play more aggressive tennis than before.
While Wimbledon didn't go that well, things looked much better after that. Some attributed that to her bringing in veteran coaching voice Brad Gilbert, which she kind of confirmed.
She maintained that they all worked as a team and were getting along well. Nobody questioned that because she was winning and playing great tennis.

Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova contested a really big match earlier this year, and now we'll see another one at the 2023 Wta Finals in Cancun.
The match in question was the Wimbledon final, which is still the most heartbreaking loss of Jabeur's career. She talked about it a few times after that match, admitting that she simply should have won it , and she was right.
She lost to a player who admitted her expectations as being a quick round-one loss, but either way, Vondrousova is a very good player. She's not just someone who stumbled into winning Wimbledon. She played well and won it deservedly.
Head-to-head:
The Wimbledon match was the most recent one they played, but it's not the only one. They actually played seven matches so far, including three this year, and funnily enough, Vondrousova won all of them. She bested Jabeur at the Australian Open to start the year.

Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur will battle it out at the Wta Finals so who exactly will come out on top in that matchup? Let's find out in the preview .
Swiatek has been spectacular this year, and while some will say that she wasn't, it's mostly because she was otherwordly last year. If you compare her to last year then yes, you will be disappointed by this year.
She won a Grand Slam , she won other trophies, and arrived at the Wta Finals as one of the favourites. I'd say that's a pretty good year.
Jabeur has had a good year, winning two solid trophies , but she lost the Wimbledon final, and that's going to mark this one as a disappointment either way. She hopes to turn it around at the Wta Finals, but it will be tricky.
Head-to-head:
Beating Swiatek would certainly be a good way to do it,...

Ons Jabeur has played three Grand Slam finals so far in her career, but she didn't win a single one, and she's particularly regretful about the last one she played.
Ons Jabeur dreams of becoming the first African player to win a Grand Slam title. She also wants to become the first Arab player to win the trophy, and so far, she played in three finals.
That's a pretty decent amount, considering that most players never even play in the Grand Slam final. The first one came at Wimbledon last year, and Jabeur won the opening set against Elena Rybakina.
She looked on the verge of getting it done but then lost the second set and, ultimately, the final one. The second chance came later that year (2022) at the US Open. She faced world number one Iga Swiatek in the final and failed to win it once again.

Coco Gauff admits she'll have plenty of time to reflect on her fantastic tennis accomplishments this season after the 2023 Wta Finals.
The World No. 3 is preparing for her opening group stage match on Monday evening, where she will confront Tunisia's Ons Jabeur . Gauff finished without a single win at the season finale last year, and she'll be looking to address that record in Cancun, where she is one the favorites to walk away with the top prize .
The 19-year-old has had an unforgettable summer on home soil. When she entered this year's US swing in August, there was doubt. Against the backdrop of a poor showing at Wimbledon, where she succumbed to a shock first-round exit, Gauff's confidence sunk to an all-time low.
Many tennis fans who made premature pronouncements about Gauff being the next big thing in women's tennis were now retracting from that statement. But tennis is a quick turnaround sport,...

Ons Jabeur hopes that this year's Wta Finals scenario of the venue not being completed days before the event never happens again.
The Tunisian was happy to make the Wta Finals , but she's not particularly thrilled with everything that transpired since then. She was one of the players who publicly called out the Wta for not announcing the Wta Finals venue on time.
She didn't mince her words this time around either due to the venue not being constructed by the time the players got there. They couldn't practice on the court on which they'll play, which is problematic for many reasons.
This is not some random event; this is the showcase of the eight best players who competed on the Wta Tour in 2023. Technically, that's the fifth-most important tennis event on the calendar, just behind the Grand Slams.
I mean, obviously as a player, I wish that the stadium...
