Japanese mystery writer Kōtarō Isaka saw great success with the adaptation of his novel "Maria Beetle," which became the Brad Pitt action flick, "Bullet Train." The highly-stylized film about five international assassins aboard a swiftly-moving bullet train who find out that their missions are connected performed extremely well at the box office, putting the rest of Isaka's bibliography in high demand with Hollywood executives. As was announced today, the next tale from Isaka to get the cinematic treatment is "Seesaw Monster," aka "Shisō Monsutā."
"Seesaw Monster" is a wholly unique tale unrelated to Isaka's "Hitman" trilogy, which includes "Maria Beetle" and "Three Assassins," the latter of which was the source material for the 2015 Japanese revenge thriller film, "Grasshopper." Interestingly, "Shisō Monsutā" is one of Isaka's short story collections, so there are plenty of ways the stories within could be adapted.

Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault are boarding a bullet train for Netflix. The two actors are set to star in and produce a feature adaptation of the novel “Seesaw Monster,” by Kōtarō Isaka, who wrote the novel on which “Bullet Train” was based.
Plot details of the film are under wraps, but Netflix describes the film as an action-comedy that will see Hathaway and Hayek Pinault play rivals forced to work together. The “Seesaw Monster” book was published in Japan in 2019 and has not yet been released in English, so little information about its plot exists online.
News of the project follows the end of the theatrical run for “Bullet Train,” a Sony Pictures adaptation of Isaka’s thriller “Maria Beetle.” The book, the second in the mystery author’s “Hitman” trilogy, focused on a group of assassins attempting to carry out their assignments on the same Japanese bullet train ride.

Netflix has landed feature rights to Seesaw Monster — a 2019 book by Kotaro Isaka, whose novel Maria Beetle was recently adapted into the David Leitch actioner Bullet Train for Sony, starring Brad Pitt.
Olivia Milch (Ocean’s Eight) will adapt the screenplay, with Oscar winner Anna Hathaway (Armageddon Time) and Oscar nominee Salma Hayek Pinault (House of Gucci) attached to star. Who will direct is not yet clear.
While Netflix is keeping plot specific under wraps, it has described the film as an action-comedy two-hander that will have Hathaway and Pinault playing rivals forced together. “Bullet Train,” Columbia Pictures’ R-rated action film starring Brad Pitt, made 4.6 million at the box office in its Thursday preview screenings, which began at 3 p.m. from 3,595 locations. It opens wide on over 4,300 screens this weekend.
“Bullet Train” may be the last major release of the summer in what will become a relatively quiet period at the box office after it opens, and Sony is in some ways counting on the fact that it will allow the film to leg out beyond its opening weekend. The studio is projecting a 30 million start for the film against a 90 million budget.
For some comparisons, “Free Guy” with Ryan Reynolds opened last August and made 28.4 million in its opening after first bringing in 2.2 million at the Thursday box office. And the R-rated superhero movie “The Suicide Squad” made 26.5 million in its opening after starting with 4.1 million in its Thursday previews, though that film...

Brad Pitt seemed as surprised as anyone when asked at the Bullet Train premiere tonight about his impending retirement.
Pitt had a semi-humorous and very visceral reaction to the question, which was prompted by a recent GQ interview. On the red carpet tonight, he laughed and spun halfway around as if embarrassed before coming back with, “No, I mean…I really have to work on my phrasing.”
He continued, “I was just saying, ‘I’m past middle age and I want to be specific about how I I spend those last things however they may be.’ “
Asked about specifics on those specifics, Pitt said, “I’ve never been a five year plan kind of guy. I’m just, whatever feels right for the day. I still operate that way.”

Tonight at the premiere of Sony’s Bullet Train, Zazie Beetz spoke with Deadline about her part in the upcoming season of Netflix’s Black Mirror, which she revealed she has already wrapped.
“I just came off of shooting that, actually. I just shot that in June,” she told Deadline of the part.
Asked if it was a lot of fun she replied, “I wouldn’t say my character is having a lot of fun, but…I think there’s a really great tongue-in-cheek dark element to it, premonition kind of element. The mirror reflecting back on us.”
Beetz is best known for playing Van on FX’s Atlanta alongside Donald Glover and Lakeith Stanfield. Her Black Mirror casting was revealed relatively recently, in mid-July. You can watch her discuss Black Mirror below.

Brad Pitt has his hands full — and then some — in the colorful new trailer for the upcoming Columbia Pictures action thriller “Bullet Train.”
Directed by David Leitch, the filmmaker behind “Atomic Blonde” and “Deadpool 2,” the film is based on the book “Maria Beetle” by Kotaro Isaka. It follows an unlucky assassin (code name Ladybug) whose latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from across the globe. That this all happens largely on a speeding bullet train in Japan makes the fight all the more difficult, but this new trailer shows Pitt’s character keeping a swell sense of humor in the midst of the violence.
Sandra Bullock co-stars as Pitt’s handler in the second of two films to team up the A-listers, with the first being “The Lost City,” in which Pitt played a dreamy trainer opposite Bullock’s romance novelist.

Brad Pitt is back in action movie mode in the first trailer for “Bullet Train,” which finds the actor battling a gaggle of stylish assassins on a train speeding through Japan.

Leitch made his filmmaking debut co-directing the first “John Wick,” and brings his penchant for colorful and stylish action to the enclosed setting of “Bullet Train.”
Pitt nearly worked with Leitch on “Deadpool 2” as he was approached for the role of Cable, ultimately played by Josh Brolin. Brad Pitt is set to star in Bullet Train, the Sony Pictures action movie that just got as director David Leitch, the helmer of Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
Zak Olkewicz wrote the script, based on the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka. In the novel, five assassins find themselves on a fast-moving bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka with only a few stops in between. They discover their missions are not unrelated to one another. The question becomes, who will make it off the train alive and what awaits them at the terminal station?
Pitt is coming off an Oscar-winning performance in the Quentin Tarantino-directed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The actor is firming up his dance card, eyeing several projects but committing only to this one for now. A start date for later this year is eyed.
