Before receiving a digital release last week, Dune: Part Two racked up nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office, paving the way for the third Dune film that writer/director Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya all expressed interest in making during the build-up to the second movie’s release. While the first two Dune movies were both based on the story told in Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, the third movie would move on to different source material: Dune Messiah, the second book in Herbert’s series. During an interview with The New York Times, Villeneuve confirmed that he’s writing Dune Messiah right now!
Villeneuve said, “That anger (felt by Zendaya’s character at the end of Part Two) is tremendous. I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third movie. I know exactly what to do. I’m writing it right now.

Zack Snyder has always managed to polarize viewers with his projects. He did it when he was at the helm of the Dceu, with some of his choices deemed a little scandalous. On the flip side, Snyder has garnered a massive fanbase, by primarily adapting comics into action films that satisfy the so-called ‘fanboys.’
The director’s new film, Rebel Moon- Part Two: The Scargiver, tells a very similar tale. While the second installment of the franchise has been panned by critics, the audience feels very differently about it. A few even believe that it might be better than Dune 2, the biggest hit of the year.

This article contains possible spoilers for Dune: Part Three and Dune Messiah.
When Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part One opened in 2021, it only took Warner Bros. six days to announce the sequel. However, when Dune: Part Two opened this past March 1—despite doing huge business and clearly paving the way for a third chapter—it took the studio over a month to confirm a film of Dune Messiah was in development. Why the delay? Well, lots of possible reasons, actually.
Even though Dune: Part Two is likely to soon cross the $700 million mark at the global box office, it was an expensive movie to make at a reported $190 million ($25 million more than Part One), plus a marketing budget that likely took that final price tag well over the $300 million mark. Once you factor in that half the box office is going to theaters, you have a low margin for profitability,...

Olivia Williams, the BAFTA-winning actress and recent SAG Awards nominee as an ensemble member for her performance as Camilla Parker Bowles on “The Crown,” has worked on the British stage in classic and new productions. But in a new interview, she points to a beloved American sitcom as an “alarming” and “harrowing” experience when compared to other gigs.
Williams appeared as a bridesmaid in the fourth season finale, in which Ross (David Schwimmer) married Emily (Helen Baxendale) in London. (You may recall some zany hijinks at some historic landmarks.) Speaking with The Independent, the actress recalled the “alarming” experience of sharing a car with an elderly actress Williams described as “distinguished” and “very good” who was later berated by a producer and told, “You’re not funny!” According to Williams, the unnamed performer was not on set the following day.
“‘Friends’ was a brand,” she continued, “and you had to fit the brand.

Dune: Part Two is a film directed by Denis Villeneuve based on the novel by Frank Herbert. It stars Timothée Chalamet and features performances by Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem.
Denis Villeneuve is back, dazzling us with this desert spectacle about a war between civilizations, where the visual elements again become the main lure.
Dune: Part Two is a three-part story narrated across several worlds and characters, leading young Atreides to accept the prophecy that transforms him into a messiah as a war rages in every corner of the known universe.
These films, with such eye-catching visual elements that they almost overshadow everything else, tend to sideline the story, over-burdens the characters, and stories often become secondary because what matters is what you see.

Stan Lee’s favorite DC character could find a place in James Gunn’s Dcu if one director were to helm the film. In the earlier Dceu, reports suggested that Michael Bay was attached to direct a movie featuring the character Lobo. The Transformers director has a knack for creating movies that gamble with absurd characters and produce amazing results. He might be the right fit to handle this character of an intergalactic bounty hunter.
The character of Lobo could still get a solo project in James Gunn’s Dcu
Interestingly, Jason Momoa pitched a solo Lobo film to Gunn during the promotion for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Momoa became a fan of the minor Superman villain of the ’80s who became popular in the ’90s as a parody of grim and gritty characters who defined comics in that decade.

[This story contains major spoilers from The Regime‘s finale.]
Will Tracy initially wrote the lead character of The Regime as a man. But then he used a writer’s trick: change one thing in the script and see what comes of it.
“It seemed to present a lot of interesting possibilities,” the series creator told The Hollywood Reporter of the seed that kicked off the story. “I don’t think I’ve really seen that before in American fiction about an autocracy, and it seemed really interesting that the character would be aware of that and she would use her status as a kind of weapon.”
What came of it was Kate Winslet inhabiting the role of the authoritarian leader in the Succession writer’s geopolitical dark comedy, which concluded its six-episode run on Sunday. Much like the entirety of the series, the ending was unpredictable: It was a victorious one.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Regime Season 1 Episode 6 series finale, “Don’t Yet Rejoice.”] The Regime always promised we were seeing the final year of an authoritarian regime, and viewers saw Chancellor Elena Vernham’s (Kate Winslet) reign come toppling down in gripping finale. The HBO limited series came to a close on Sunday, April 7, wrapping up Elena and Herbert’s (Matthias Schoenaerts) wacky love (or lust) story and revealing both of their fates as their political world crumbled around them. Elena and Herbert spent most of The Regime finale on the run after rebel forces unseated Elena from power. Finding the Chancellor and having her answer for her crimes was the top of the rebel forces’ list of priorities after the coup. Keeping Elena safe was the top of Herbert’s. Elena was as delusional as ever hiding in the countryside, thinking they’d soon come across a supporter who’d give them safe harbor. The ...

In Denis Villeneuve's 2021 sci-fi epic "Dune: Part One," Jason Momoa plays Duncan Idaho, a Gonaz Swordmaster in the service of House Atreides. He was robust and friendly, kind to the young Paul (Timothée Chalamet), and capable in a fight; he famously killed multiple Sardaukar warriors before being overwhelmed and slain during a Harkonnen raid on the Atrides' mansion in Arrakeen. Despite this, Frank Herbert's second "Dune" book, "Dune Messiah," sees Duncan return as a clone, Indeed, Duncan clones, called "gholas," appeared throughout Herbert's six original novels, making Duncan Idaho the only "Dune" character to hold that distinction.

James Cameron has hailed 'Dune: Part Two' as "pure cinema".The 'Titanic' filmmaker was very impressed by Denis Villeneuve's sequel - the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far - and he believes that the 'Sicario' director has been far more faithful to Frank Herbert's 1965 novel with his movies than David Lynch was in his "disappointing" 1984 picture.Speaking to the French publication Le Figaro, James said: "David Lynch's adaptation was disappointing. It was missing the power of Herbert's novel."Villeneuve's films are much more convincing. The characters are sketched out, they are very identifiable. It's pure cinema. I speak regularly to Denis, filmmaker to filmmaker. We record our conversations, like (Francois) Truffaut and (Alfred) Hitchcock."Cameron, 69, is the latest esteemed director to laud 'Dune: Part Two' after Steven Spielberg recently described the epic as one of the best sci-fi films he has ever seen.

The current rendition, Ripley, streaming on Netflix, is a web series written and directed by Academy Award winner Steven Zaillian. The primary story surrounds the titular fraudster at the low of his occupation when all his shrewd manoeuvres are devised to outwit the victims and fizzle out. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 is well on its way to becoming one of the most successful blockbusters in Hollywood. A brilliant sequel to its impressive predecessor, the film was bigger, more visually spectacular, and more emotionally intense that the first part, which is credit to Villeneuve’s prowess and skill as a filmmaker.

Quite a bit of work goes into making the worlds of science fiction and fantasy films feel lived-in and "real" enough for the audience to suspend their disbelief. One of the best ways to add some authenticity to a fictional world is to add a constructed language (often called a "conlang") with a few words or phrases to pepper in with the regular dialogue. Conlangs have been around forever, like the languages that author J.R.R. Tolkien created for his "Lord of the Rings" books and the Klingon language created for the "Star Trek" franchise, helping fans really get into these fictional worlds. Frank Herbert's "Dune" novels contained a few words from the language Chakobsa, spoken by the Indigenous people of Arrakis, the Fremen, but there wasn't quite enough there to use reliably in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two." That's where linguists (and married couple) David and Jessie Peterson came in,...

The latest Netflix series Ripley is a reimagining of the quintessential character ‘Tom Ripley,’ starring Andrew Scott. If you’ve watched Matt Damon’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, then I must say that it is not a possible feat to compare the two portrayals. Even though Damon perfectly played this sociopathic character with his 90s boyish charm, Andrew Scott might yet again prove that he’s one of the greatest actors of this generation. Ripley follows the same plotline as the 1999 movie, but it does have its own details and differences, which I feel is quite justified. Moreover, the monochrome just adds to the grittiness of the narrative and keeps you hooked on the screen despite the Tarkovsky-esque slowness.

Who is Tom Ripley? It's a question that hangs over "Ripley," Steven Zaillian's chilly, chilling, uber-stylish adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's "The Talented Mr. Ripley." This material has been tackled on screen before — once as the 1960 French film "Purple Noon," and even more prominently in 1999 via Anthony Minghella's "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Zaillian, who wrote and directed the entire new Netflix series, seems to go to great lengths to distance his adaptation from Minghella's, even if they're essentially the same story. While the 1999 film was awash in bright, sunny colors, Zaillian and cinematographer Robert Elswit employ noir-tinged black-and-white cinematography that often looks straight out of a silent German expressionist film.
Minghella's film also leaned into the homoeroticism at the center of the Ripley character, but the Tom Ripley here, played in a brilliant calculating manner by Andrew Scott, feels almost sexless. One...

Dune 2, starring Rebecca Ferguson, is a masterful work of storytelling. Adapted from Frank Herbert’s book of the same name, the film is a faithful adaptation, and the final product is stunning, to say the least.
Denis Villeneuve recreated the best parts of the book to absolute perfection. From character development to the cinematography, every aspect of the film proved Villeneuve’s genius. He expertly crafted the intrigue that Herbert had written in his masterpiece. His eye for detail is excellent, and it translated onto the screen remarkably well.
The film has several excellent moments, and the Bene Gesserit sisters have been the subject of interest since the first film came out. However, the ending of the second installment hinted at something rather big that many might have overlooked.

Understandably so, the bulk of the box office talk generated from this past weekend's worth of moviegoing has been centered on the performance of "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The kaiju flick obliterated expectations with an $80 million opening, making it one of the biggest of the year. But the biggest domestic opening of 2024 still belongs to "Dune: Part Two," which debuted at $82.5 million back in March. And, while Godzilla and Kong were busy topping the charts, director Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic passed a pretty significant milestone.
"Dune: Part Two" held remarkably well over the weekend, taking in another $11.3 million domestically. That was good enough to hold onto the number three spot, with the film dropping just 36% in its fifth frame. Warner Bros. and Legendary production has now amassed $252.6 million domestically to go with $373.7 million internationally for a grand total of $626.3 million. Frank Herbert's "Dune" is one of the most influential science fiction books of all time. The original novel remains a groundbreaking story that draws inspiration from the hero's journey or monomyth, environmental science, politics, real history, and Arabic religion and Middle Eastern culture to deliver an unprecedented epic about the dangers of messianic leaders and the importance of ecology.
Ever since its initial publication in 1965, "Dune" has captivated all kinds of audiences, including hopeful producers and executives eager to adapt the story of Paul Atreides and his rise to power into a cinematic event. For a long time, filmmakers kept trying and failing to turn "Dune" into a movie, resulting in Herbert's book being labeled "unadaptable." Since then, however, there have been a handful of movie and TV adaptations, each of them highlighting different aspects of the original novel and its sequels.

Using high-tech stillsuits, the Fremen can capture and recycle every last microgram of fluid their bodies excrete. When one of their own dies, they can siphon the water out of their bodies and add it to special underground casks that keep it fresh and drinkable. Additionally, they have trained themselves to walk using an irregular stepping pattern, as regular footfalls attract massive underground sandworms that might eat them alive. The Fremen all have blue-tinted eyes due to constant exposure to the spice melange, a valuable psychedelic resource that expands consciousness and facilitates space travel.

With the phenomenal response to Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic, Dune 2, viewers have been desperately awaiting the next entry in the franchise. Nonetheless, recent hints from the Canadian filmmaker himself that he may not return to the director’s chair following the third flick have sparked speculation about who might take over the reins.
Not surprisingly, one name that has been popping up in our minds is none other than legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. What is more exciting is that the Jurassic Park director has even heaped praise on the critically acclaimed Dune 2, declaring it “one of the most brilliant science fiction films” he has ever seen.

“My planet, Arrakis, is so beautiful when the sun is low. Rolling over the sands, you can see spice in the air,” a proud and somber Chani says of her desert planet, Arrakis, which is home to the Freman, at the beginning of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part One.”
Critics around the world hailed the first installment of Villeneuve’s take on Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi classic about false idols, imperialism and religion back in 2021, and now, three years later, reviews are also strong for the long-awaited sequel. But despite praise for the film’s stunning cinematography and visual effects, “Dune: Part Two” is being criticized by some commentators for failing to properly contend with the book’s Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) influences and commentary on Western imperialism. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two has worm-ridden its way to success after debuting with $182 million on opening weekend. The film has earned over $514 million at the international box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024 as of now. The Timothée Chalamet starrer has also been widely regarded by critics and audiences as a masterpiece.
The film is a follow-up to 2021’s Dune: Part One, continuing the story of Paul Atreides and his mother Lady Jessica on the desert planet of Arrakis after their family is betrayed by the evil Harkonnens and the Emperor Shaddam IV. Both films are based on Dune by Frank Herbert. While the novel series has four more books, Villeneuve reported is just interested in adapting the second book and wrapping up the story with Dune 3.

At the beginning of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune," Paul Atreides is only 15 years old. By the time he survived an assassination attempt, moved into the desert, and become a Messiah for both the Fremen and the Bene Gesserit, he was only about 17 or 18. In Denis Villeneuve's recent film adaptations of "Dune," Paul was played by Timothée Chalamet, an actor who was 23 when shooting began. He's 28 now. Either Paul was aged up for the film, or Chalamet is playing a teenager. Either way, Paul's age is unspecified. Also, there is a lot of time compression in Villeneuve's adaptation; Paul's time with the Fremen takes place over only a few months -- gauged by his mother's pregnancy -- and not two full years like in the book.
In 1969, Herbert wrote a sequel called "Dune Messiah," which took place 12 years after the events of the first novel. In it, Paul...

Dune is one of the standout films of this decade. The film is an immaculate adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name, and Denis Villeneuve proved his genius once more with this production.
The technical aspects of the film are very intriguing, contributing just as much to the finished product. Ultimately, the results are glorious, from the more obvious features, such as acting and direction, to the more mechanical facets, such as sound production and editing.
Dune and its sequel are as much a visual treat as they are an auditory delight. Moreover, a legendary Jamaican dub reggae artist inspired the team to create some of the most chilling scenes ever seen on a screen.

New Line Cinema teamed up with the rock band Dokken when they needed a song and music video to help promote their 1987 film A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, but when the time came to make another Elm Street sequel the following the year, they decided to switch musical genres and find a rapper they could work with on a song for the soundtrack of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. The overwhelming success of Dune: Part Two has definitely put some pressure on Denis Villeneuve to deliver a third film. Villeneuve’s first and second films have left untold a lot of story arcs from Frank Herbert’s novel, which fans believe will be completed in his film based on the second book, Dune: Messiah. Interestingly, the film may not happen anytime soon as the visionary director wants to make sure that one condition is met for this threequel film.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is being hailed as a sci-fi epic and the film’s box office just proves this description. Villeneuve was a long-time fan of Frank Herbert’s novel and revealed that a young Paul Atreides’ story influenced him in a way to venture into filmmaking. However, he was not completely satisfied by the first cinematic adaptation of the novel by David Lynch.

Dune: Awakening, Funcom’s upcoming open-world survival title set within Frank Herbert’s iconic universe, received a comprehensive overview earlier this month via a new trailer.
Details regarding base building, combat mechanics, and the harsh desert environment of Arrakis were revealed in the trailer, which enjoyed a lot of popularity thanks to Dune: Part 2 reinvigorating fan interest. However, a conspicuous omission garnered the attention of hardcore Dune fans: the absence of sandworm riding at launch.

Riding sandworms is a core element of Dune lore, where riders traverse the vast desert dunes (pun intended) atop colossal sandworms. The movies feature this as well, but strangely, it will not be available in the initial release of Dune: Awakening.

Elon Musk’s former partner Grimes, a singer, songwriter, and record producer, once found similarities in her life to that comparable to the world and characters presented in Frank Herbert’s opus, Dune. Resonance with fictional media is not a one-person affair; most delve into them to find parallels to one’s experiences or the emotions, goals, and characteristics a character becomes emblematic to mirror their own.

However, what has taken some netizens to side-eye Dune super-fan Grimes’ comment in a 2022 interview was the Canadian artist finding her son, X Æ A-12 Musk, analogous to the 1965 novel’s protagonist, Paul Atreides. Well, not through personality traits, per se (she didn’t specify), but through the journey Paul follows within the overarching storyline.
This, of course, holds some intriguing implications when we consider the character’s trajectory in Dune Messiah.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series has successfully captivated audiences’ interest thanks to its visual effects, direction, and screenplay among other elements. Fans applauded the project for mostly remaining true to its source material, referring to the two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. However, the director decided to enhance its beauty by making significant changes in the movie which were different from the original material.

"Dune: Part Two" has continued to rake in the dough and has now surpassed 2021's "Dune" at the global box office. When all's said and done, director Denis Villeneuve's sequel will probably make somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.5 times as much as the first movie did, which is great news for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. It's also very good news for those who want to see Villeneuve finish his trilogy in a few years, as all signs point to the studios giving a third installment the green light.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two was recently released and gained more fans for the already-famous franchise. The sci-fi epic starred Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, and Stellan Skarsgård in lead roles. Based on Frank Herbert’s acclaimed novel, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films have raked in commercial profits besides enamoring the viewers with a deft adaptation of a colossal source material. Previous efforts in getting the novel(s) brought to the big screen had rendered the premise largely unfilmable.
It’d be wrong to affirm, though, that all attempts to ‘film’ the saga fell short, as in 2000 and 2003, two three-part miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel saw the triumphant adaptation of Herbert’s first three novels—a feat nothing short of remarkable.

Like all media, Dune: Part Two isn’t immune to criticisms, despite being deemed one of the greatest sequels ever, which is justified following its brilliance in almost every aspect. But while almost every actor excels in the space opera, thus succeeding in maintaining the immersion that we really are on an alien planet, fans couldn’t get behind Christopher Walken’s performance in the film.
While everyone loves Walken, who has been pigeonholed into weird roles throughout his decades-long career, many weren’t fans of his work as the Emperor in Dune 2, stressing he was miscast.

The Dune fanbase, which includes both film and novel fans, doesn’t spare anyone when you go after the franchise. Actor Jason Momoa learned this the hard way as he was bombarded with negative comments after he claimed that Duncan Idaho is not a “cool name.” After playing the character in Dune (2021), the actor believes that he has played characters with cooler names than Duncan Idaho.

In the Dune universe, Duncan Idaho was a Ginaz Swordmaster. He is the only character to feature in all six of Herbert’s original Dune novels. Just like the novel, Momoa’s Duncan Idaho was the swordmaster of House Atreides and one of Paul’s mentors. Unfortunately, the character didn’t return for the sequel, Dune: Part Two (2024).

Many might have noticed some similarities in the themes of both these groundbreaking works of fiction but most fans don’t know that Tolkien absolutely hated Herbert’s influential novels.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels were peak works in the 20th-century fantasy genre
Tolkien openly talked about this hatred in a letter to a friend. However, he didn’t mention the reason behind his dislike for Herbert’s work. Many speculate that Tolkien’s opinion about Dune stemmed from how the novel handled its religious theme as opposed to Lord of the Rings.
