Across the sprawling city of Los Angeles — within feet of children’s bedrooms, playgrounds, office buildings, and places of worship — there’s an oil well, exuding toxins that put nearby residents at risk of asthma attacks, reproductive issues, and multiple types of cancer. The evidence stacked against Big Oil is alarming, and after more than 130 years since drilling began in the town of flowers and sunshine, the Los Angeles city council unanimously voted to phase out drilling in January 2021.
In response, oil and gas companies collected enough signatures for a referendum to challenge the legislation.

“When Jane Fonda calls, you show up,” explained John Legend, tickling the ivories in front of a large crowd of glittery art lovers, environmentalists and celebs. “Wouldn’t you?”
The large artist, art collector and celeb crowd mingling in the white chandelier-strewn tent behind Gagosian Gallery made it pretty clear they not only would, but did. Fonda, along with gallerist Larry Gagosian and Christie’s, organized the evening, titled “Art For a Safe and Healthy California” — an art sale to support California’s grassroots fight against Big Oil, in an attempt to protect neighborhoods from toxic oil drilling. With so many years of activism and fundraising dedicated to feminist, pacifist and environmental issues — organizing, fundraising, holding benefits, walkouts, protests, not to mention getting arrested four times — Jane Fonda is now going up against Big Oil.
Nothing the lifelong rights fighter can’t handle, of course.
“What’s more important than the destruction of our planet?...

Maybe it was in 2014, when its second location opened in the Kardashian-rich foothills of Calabasas.
Or was it 2018, when Kanye West tweeted about “Erewhon drip,” sending legions of Yeezy wearers on a mad scramble for (then-bootleg-only) merch? How about the summer of 2022, when TikTok caught on to its Hailey Bieber smoothies ($18 and fortified with things like “vital proteins vanilla collagen” and “hyaluronic acid”), unleashing an avalanche of #Erewhon-tagged content to the tune of 450 million views?
It’s up for debate what the true tipping-point moment was that transformed Erewhon from just another L.A. health food market into a money-minting retail phenomenon. But there can be no arguing that the wildly popular chain with the strange name — pronounced “air Juan,” an anagram of “nowhere” — is doing something right.

From acclaimed L.A.-based artist Alex Israel comes ‘Spf-18‘. This will be Israel’s first foray into feature films, as his career has mostly comprised of making splashes in the La art scene. The film itself includes elements of his gallery shows, and Israel describes the film as “An artwork for teenagers, who watch movies at school, on iTunes, and on Netflix.” This trailer for ‘Spf-18‘ seems reminiscent of recent coming of age tales like ‘The Kings of Summer‘ and ‘The Way, Way Back‘, mixed with the cheekiness of a show like ‘The O.C.‘.
‘Spf-18‘ is sure to follow in the same vein, albeit providing a more millennial approach. The film stars Carson Meyer, Noah Centineo, Bianca Santos, Jackson White, Sean Russel Herman, Rosanna Arquette, Molly Ringwald, Keanu Reeves, Pamela Anderson, and Goldie Hawn.
