Mary Lynn Rajskub and Jay Ryan have boarded the Netflix, CBC and Aptn comedy North of North, which has started production in Nunavut in northern Canada.
Rajskub played Chloe O’Brian on the long-running 24 drama and also starred in the comedy Night School with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and Mayfield Games with Mira Sorvino. Ryan is a veteran of New Zealand soaps and series like Mary Kills People and Beauty and the Beast.
Other new cast members for North of North include Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Kelly William, Zorga Qaunaq, Doreen Simmonds and Tanya Tagaq. They join the previously-announced lead Anna Lambe, who plays young Inuk mother Siaja, with Keira Cooper, a 7 year-old actress from Iqaluit, Nunavut, playing her daughter Bun.
Siaja wants to build a new future for herself, not easily done in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business, according to a synopsis for North of North from the producers.

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the success of “Night Country,” which saw Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. Per HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.
“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López said. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey,...

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.
However, what’s clear is that, despite creator Nic Pizzolato’s criticisms, López’s season has brought a return to form for the True Detective universe, becoming the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.
As part of López’s new multiyear deal, she will also create new content for HBO and Max.

We’ve arrived at the final episode of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country and we’re finally getting answers as to what’s really going on in the town of Ennis, Alaska. More importantly, episode six revealed exactly what happened to the researchers, the whereabouts of Raymond Clark, and who was responsible for Annie Kowtok’s death.
Episode six begins on December 31st, the 14th day of night, with Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) making their way through the ice caves. When Liz hears whispers, Navarro asks, “You feel it too, don’t you?” Navarro thinks she sees something – a body, perhaps – and leads Liz toward it, insisting “it’s here.” Unfortunately, they’re met with blocks of ice.

"True Detective: Night Country" has drawn to a close and it turns out there are no Lovecraftian beasts or evil spirits from the beyond to blame for the goings on in Ennis, Alaska. Instead, we learned the Tsalal research station scientists perished at the hands of an enraged mob made up of Ennis' embattled women. Or, rather, as a result of being stripped naked and forced onto the Alaskan tundra by said mob.
Of course, there's a lot more to the "Night Country" finale than that. Far from just being a bunch of peeved-off cleaners, the ladies of Ennis become the physical embodiment of an ancient Inuit legend, awakened by the horrific injustices visited upon her land. Throughout "Night Country," we see the women of Ennis fall victim to domestic violence, stillbirths as a result of the polluted environment, and...

Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are the focal points of "True Detective: Night Country" for good reason. To witness a clash between two equally strong personalities is nothing short of riveting, especially when Liz and Naravarro make a solid team, despite their innate differences. The two women have been dealing with their inner demons in markedly different ways so far — while Danvers suppresses her trauma with impulsive, headstrong actions, Navarro suffers in silence and channels her rage into solving the Tsalal/Annie K. case. However, there is a third individual in Ennis who is integral to the investigation and has seldom gotten the credit: Peter Prior (Finn Bennett), and his single-minded dedication to the case needs to be talked about if we are to discuss the complicated web of conspiracies gripping the town.

Well, we're five episodes into "True Detective: Night Country" and the mystery just keeps getting more... mysterious. What caused a group of research scientists to perish in apparent anguish on the Alaskan tundra? How is that linked to the murder of Annie Kowtok, an Indigenous woman whose body was found dumped in the small town of Ennis some years before the discovery of the scientist's bodies? And how does the spiral from season 1 fit into all of this?
At this point, there's all sorts of speculation among fans, including talk of pollution causing the inhabitants of Ennis, Alaska to lose their minds, and even a potential Lovecraftian creature that would finally fulfill the cosmic horror promises of season 1. Considering new showrunner Issa López's penchant for weaving the paranormal with gritty realism, as evidenced in her 2017 feature "Tigers Are Not Afraid," it wouldn't be completely out of the...

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he’s not creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show. He has made his lack of involvement with the new season very clear on social media, where he even went so far as to refer to one element of the new episodes as “stupid”. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season. To find out what Lopez thought of Pizzolatto’s comments, Vulture reached out to her – and did get a response.

It's official: we're in the Night Country now. All season, "True Detective: Night Country" has been taking viewers on a scary thrill ride through the frozen heart of a small Alaska town, but the latest episode kicked everything into an almost unbearable high gear — and finally said the show's title in the creepiest context possible. While Navarro (Kali Reis) is left grieving, haunted, and possibly disabled, Danvers (Jodie Foster) sinks lower into her own cycle of self-destruction, and both women face a type of evil that evades easy explanation.
"True Detective: Night Country" is juggling an impressive number of themes, clues, and intersecting plot points, clicking each facet of its multi-genre story together with a satisfying snap as it goes. The series feels like an expertly crafted high-wire act that manages to balance drama, mystery, dark comedy, science fiction, and several types of horror.

When Ned gets arrested for selling pot, after his release all of his sisters try to keep him in their houses with their families and friends but Ned’s personality always gets in the way maybe what the Rochlin sisters are missing in their...

Viewers of True Detective: Night Country may find the forbidding darkness and snow-caked backdrop of the Arctic-set Max crime drama jarring, especially as Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in fur-hooded parkas breathe out cold wisps of air while investigating evil all around them.
But co-star Anna Lambe found the frigidly cold, dark filming set for the latest True Detective season more like home sweet home. “I was snug as a bug in a rug,” says the Inuk actor from Grise Fiord, Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost community, who tells The Hollywood Reporter she embraced the permanent darkness and freezing cold of a winter in Iceland, which doubled as remote Alaska during production.
Lambe plays Kayla Prior, the wife of young cop Peter Prior (Finn Bennett), who defends her family amid the primal beauty and ferocity of a snowbound Alaskan winter while Foster and Reis investigate a cold-case murder and the mysterious...

True Detective made a strong return to HBO on Sunday night.
The premiere episode of Night Country delivered about 2M viewers across Max and linear telecasts, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.
This is a pretty strong showing for True Detective, which returned for its fourth installment five years after the Season 3 debut. It’s not entirely accurate to compare Night Country‘s performance to Season 3, considering it was released before the launch of Max.
To help put the numbers into perspective, The White Lotus Season 2 debuted with 1.5M cross-platform viewers, while Euphoria managed 2.4M for its Season 2 debut. The final season of Succession came out of the gate with 2.3M for its premiere episode.
It’s also not uncommon for HBO series to put up a significant amount of viewership as the season progresses. According to the company, episodes of The White Lotus and Euphoria Season 2 ultimately grew to around...

The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. Set in the remote town of Ennis, Alaska, Night Country follows former partners Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearance of eight researchers from a remote facility. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.
True Detective: Night Country marks Jodie Foster’s first television appearance since the ’70s – not counting her handful of voiceover and narration guest roles in the ’90s and early ’00s – though certainly not her first time starring in a thriller. Foster is joined by a number of other talented actors, including Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, and Christopher Eccleston.

Looking back, 2014 was truly a different time: Obama was in office, skinny jeans still reigned supreme and “True Detective” established itself with an unabashed emphasis on masculinity. Three years earlier, Ryan Murphy had revived the anthology series with “American Horror Story,” but it took the imprimatur of HBO, massive movie stars and a “serious” genre like crime to give the format real prestige. In pairing Matthew McConaughey with Woody Harrelson on a journey through the bayou, creator Nic Pizzolatto elevated some of that genre’s clichés and left others intact — including a marginal presence for women, crowded into bit roles as wives and villains to make room for portentous monologues and four-minute tracking shots.

True Detective has had a long and storied history on the small screen.
After a critically adored freshman season, the series returned with a dud of a follow-up that seemingly ended the franchise.
Almost four years later, we got True Detective Season 3 -- a marked improvement on the sophomore season.
Now, we're getting True Detective: Night Country, a new chapter in the anthology series.
Below, we've rounded up everything we know about True Detective: Night Country.
What is True Detective Night Country About?
We have a synopsis from HBO:
When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace.
The White Lotus Season 3: Everything We Know
To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

The new trailer for the upcoming season of HBO’s hit crime show True Detective has just been released courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. Season 4 of the anthology brings audiences to Alaska, where the location is known for having days of constant sunlight as well as constant darkness. Both extremes have been depicted in films like Christopher Nolan‘s Insomnia and the vampire movie 30 Days of Night. This new trailer has Jodie Foster back at odds with a mysterious killer, which will ring memories of Silence of the Lambs, and she pairs up with Kali Reis to solve a case that seems to tread on supernatural elements. It also looks as if this season is connecting to past seasons with the reveal of a spiral marking that has been featured in season one and season three.

The latest trailer for True Detective: Night Country puts a strong emphasis on just how unsettling the long periods of darkness in Alaska can be.
The fourth season of HBO’s anthology series stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives — who evidently have some not-so-great history with one another — investigating the disappearance of eight scientists from an arctic research station as the months without sunlight descend on Alaska. “To solve the case,” the show’s logline reads, “Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
The trailer also expands on an earlier teaser by offering up a few more details about the case — and showcasing the crooked spiral iconography that’s a visual signature for True Detective, having featured in seasons one and three (which...

New Canadian podcast spotlights Indigenous actors turning the tide on representation in the industry
Meaningful representation of Indigenous Peoples on screen has exploded in the last few years but there’s still work to do. High profile stories about fraudulent claims to Indigenous identity can leave the harmful impression that there aren’t many accomplished or talented genuinely Indigenous artists. Of course that’s far from the truth. Actors and Ancestors is a brand new podcast that aims to create a space for Indigenous actors to tell their own stories on their own terms, push back against old stereotypes, and inspire positive change in the broader film and TV industry.
Actors and Ancestors launches on November 26th, 2023. Guided by the show’s creator and host, Rocky Cree actor, Joel D. Montgrand, every episode of Actors and Ancestors features a screen-based Indigenous actor with a story to tell. Montgrand aims to center joy and laughter while not shying away from difficult topics. His guests dive...
