Lana Del Rey, she of the country club Chemtrails, has finally discovered “Blue Skies” — at least in the form of songwriter Irving Berlin’s 98-year-old standard.
Of course, since it’s Del Rey, “blue” is a double-entendre, and there’s a sadness in her voice that she can’t quite shake. Where Ella Fitzgerald quivered her voice with a little hope on her rendition and Willie Nelson went full country funk with his, winking his way through every line, Del Rey sounds restrained and distant, as if the blue skies...

Nestled amid a tale of hardship and torment, “Keep It Movin'” is a bright spot in the newly released adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Just as sisters Nettie and Celie (Halle Bailey and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) are about to be torn from one another, they find a brief moment of respite and optimism as they sing to one another on the beach. “Nothing’s gonna take you down, oh / Just let it go / Life can never break your soul,” sings Nettie, instilling a feeling of hope that flickers and wanes in Celie as the film endures.
As one of the few original songs included in director Blitz Bazawule’s revival of “The Color Purple,” “Keep It Movin'” has already emerged as a focal point for the movie, which earned the second-biggest Christmas Day opening in history following its release on Dec. 25. Beyond its buoyant charms, it’s resonated beyond the...

Exclusive: Cameras are rolling on Stargazer, a new feature from artist-filmmaker Christian Neuman, which producers have described as a “modern psychic thriller” starring Rosalind Halstead and Poppy Delevingne.
The pic is Neuman’s second feature, following the 2019 horror feature Skin Walker, starring Udo Kier and Amber Anderson. The first week of principal photography has wrapped up in London, with the production now in Belgium and set to conclude in Luxembourg by mid-December.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Stargazer follows Fey Vilar, portrayed by Rosalind Halstead, a celebrated actress grappling with the abduction of her son, Paul. Using performance as a coping mechanism, Fey’s life takes an unexpected turn when she is offered a role in a play in which she must embody the character of Estelle Maar, Paul’s captor, in order to uncover the truth about her son’s disappearance. January 2024 will mark the eighth anniversary of Jennifer Lawrence’s second Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globe victory for “Joy,” which, having followed her previous lead and supporting triumphs for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013) and “American Hustle” (2014), made the 25-year-old the youngest three-time film acting honoree in the organization’s history. That particular hot streak ended there, but she may be set for a comeback at the upcoming 81st Golden Globe Awards if enough voters favor her work in the raunchy summer flick “No Hard Feelings.” If she does end up adding another trophy to her vast collection, she will set several new precedents and tie her category’s record for most wins.
At this point, the only two women who have clinched three Best Comedy/Musical Actress Golden Globes are Rosalind Russell and Julie Andrews, who respectively reached the milestone in 1963 (“Gypsy”) and 1983 (“Victor/Victoria”). Russell had previously been lauded for...

This story about “The Color Purple” composers Nova Wav first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap magazine.
As far back as Steven Spielberg’s 1985 adaptation of Alice Walker’s game-changing novel, “The Color Purple” has always had a musical legacy. In addition to being scored by none other than Quincy Jones, the film boasted an earworm of an original song, “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister),” that was co-penned by Lionel Richie. So it wasn’t shocking that “Purple” would spring to life in Broadway musical form, first in 2005 and then in a multi-Tony-winning revival 10 years later, which would launch the career of an exciting upstart named Cynthia Erivo.
When the prospect of an adaptation of the musical into an all-singing, all-dancing major film bloomed into reality, it was clear the team would need some new tunes to goose the already-rousing ones in the two-act musical. Enter Nova Wav,...

It’s official: U.S. Senate hopeful Hill Harper will not return to The Good Doctor for Season 7, TVLine has confirmed exclusively.
“Hill Harper feels strongly that there is a crisis in American democracy — too often, government only works for the rich and powerful while the rest of us struggle to find a voice,” Harper’s campaign spokesperson tells TVLine. “Hill is dedicating his efforts full time to fixing that, and he’s running for the U.S. Senate as an active union member to give working people more of a voice in Congress.”

Kansas, 1874. In a letter to his father, Will Andrews (Fred Hechinger) details his decision to leave Harvard and travel west, searching for a purpose while exploring the country. His idealistic desire to experience a hunt leads Andrews to join experienced buffalo hunter Miller (Nicolas Cage), who promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Little do they realise that the unfolding journey will risk their lives and their sanity.
Amidst announcements about this adaptation of John Edward Williams’ 1960 novel, the most attention regarding this film occurred during an actor roundtable, where Cage mentioned a horse named Rain Man that he believed wanted to kill him. Such a fun story feels different from co-writer/director Gabe Polsky’s feature about man’s all-consuming nature and the destructive aftermath left behind.

It’s the age of artificial intelligence, and whether we like it or not, the line between man and machine is getting blurrier by the day. With its vast potential, AI, or automated computation, is being used to replace human beings in various industries. The burning question remains: What really differentiates algorithm-based computation from sentient life in the long run? And if it is emotion, can technology also emulate that in automation we conventionally don’t consider to be alive? Gareth Edward’s recent feature, The Creator, is not the first movie to raise such questions, but it certainly becomes the most topical one due to the way it handles the question at a time when the world is preoccupied with the utility of AI.

An expanded version of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” will be released on Dec. 1, featuring more than 40 unreleased tracks, 11 of which are alternative takes from the film that have never been seen before.
Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer — who passed away in 2021 at the age of 91, after a storied acting career — starred in the iconic 1965 musical. Originally, Plummer recorded tracks for the film, however, his voice was later dubbed over by Bill Lee. Nearly 60 years later, Plummer’s vocals will be released to the public.
“The Little Dears,” a song that was never in the film and combines “I Have Confidence,” “My Favorite Things” and “New Governess,” will be featured on the Super Deluxe Edition. The songs “Do-Re-Mi,” “Favorite Things,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and more will also be included.
One of the alternative takes, “Prelude/The Sound of Music,” performed by Andrews is already available to stream.

A big, brawny original sci-fi movie is a rare thing in the age of franchise branding, which makes you root for Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, an admirably ambitious endeavor, stuffed with imposing visuals, impressive design work and nifty tech hardware. But this future-world action thriller about a war between humankind and artificial intelligence feels like a lot of movies scrunched together, most of them familiar. A dull lead, a wishy-washy vein of ersatz spirituality, racial optics by turns uneasy and pandering and the usual chaotic plotting don’t help. Even the charm of an enigmatic robo-kid only goes so far.
Co-scripting with Chris Weitz, one of the writers on the director’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Edwards repurposes ideas from that movie with an assortment of elements and iconography pieced together from several others, among them Blade Runner, Aliens, District 9, Akira, War of the Worlds and Apocalypse Now.

Gold Derby recently hosted two polls about which legends should be honored at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Your choice to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for film life achievement is Julie Andrews. The top selection to receive the Carol Burnett Award for TV life achievement is Dick Van Dyke. Wouldn’t that be an amazing ceremony if the iconic stars of “Mary Poppins” would both be celebrated on the same night? The only word to describe it would be “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”!
Both Andrews and Van Dyke have received the Kennedy Center Honors and SAG life achievement awards. Andrews was honored last year with the AFI life achievement award. Van Dyke has been inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
Our DeMille poll offered 18 possible choices, and here are the results below:

Editor’s note: Jesse Andrews is author of the novel Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which is one of five books pulled from the library shelves of high schools within the purview of Tallahassee, Florida-based Leon County Schools superintendent Rock Hanna, after the Leon County chapter of the conservative group Moms for Liberty petitioned the schools to remove the book because of the frank depiction of sex and gender identity issues. The others include Push, the Sapphire-penned book that inspired the film Precious; Doomed by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk; Lucky by Alice Sebold; and Dead End by Jason Meyer. Sydney, July 18 (Ians) The state government of Victoria in Australia on Tuesday announced that plans to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games have been cancelled, as costs will be ‘too high’ at over 6 billion Australian dollars (4 billion US dollars).
The Victoria government has advised the Commonwealth Games Federation (Cgf) and Commonwealth Games Australia that the state will be terminating the Host Agreement, reports Xinhua.
“The main reason we agreed to host the Games was to deliver lasting benefits in housing, tourism and sporting infrastructure for regional Victoria,” the state government noted in a statement.
Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said on his social media that “more than 6 billion Australian dollars for a 12-day sporting event is just too high.”
“It’s more than twice the estimated economic benefit the Games would bring our state,” said Andrews.

The Good Doctor star Hill Harper is officially running for the United States Senate. The actor announced his run for office on Monday, July 10. See his campaign announcement video below. Harper is running to represent the state of Michigan, going up against Democratic Representative Elissa Slotkin. They’re both running to fill outgoing senator Debbie Stabenow’s seat. Harper, a single dad who lives in Michigan with his son, Pierce, plays Dr. Marcus Andrews in the ABC medical drama, which was renewed for Season 7 in April just before the May Season 6 finale. Harper’s Dr. Andrews stepped down as president of the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital during the finale, which could open the door to an exit from the long-running series. Harper — one of the three remaining original series regulars in the cast — has not revealed whether this means he’s leaving The Good Doctor. TV Insider reached out...

Oh yes, Lifetime is back covering another V.C. Andrews Saga.
And we're back with our reviews of this utter madness. We're kicking off the cutthroat Cutlers saga with V.C. Andrews' Dawn this time.
And the generational battle of the badass blonds was deliciously epic and entertaining.
It wouldn't be a V.C. Andrews special without scandalous family secrets, shady rich people, incestual relationships worth side-eying, and deliciously evil women.
But dare one say they were fairly light on some of those things, which was a bit of a surprise.
Another surprise was just how enjoyable Dawn Longchamp Cutler (?) was as a protagonist.
No offense to some of the other V.C. Andrews' girlies, ahem, Heaven, let's be real, it's freaking Heaven, but for the most part, Dawn at least seemed like she had full control of the brain cell at all times, if you catch my drift.
The girl was sassy,...

Lifetime isn't Lifetime without V.C. Andrews's book-to-screen adaptations!
And we know you're excited about the four-part Cutler Saga, kicking things off with the first in the series, Dawn.
We can already tell you it's pure campy fun, and the cast is no joke.
We had the opportunity to sit in on a presser with the cast of Dawn, with a special appearance by V.C. Andrews' ghost writer, Andrew Neiderman.
It was all copacetic as everyone discussed how they got into character, gushed over star Brec Bassinger's performance and work ethic, and expressed all the fun they had filming this piece.
Fortunately, TV Fanatic got the opportunity to jump on Zoom with star, Bassinger, to discuss what it was like to play the film's titular role as we follow her through her journey from adolescence through adulthood.

Prince William’s ‘in Love’ With the Entire Middleton Family, Royal Author Says: ‘It’s Not Just Kate’
Apparently, Prince William’s love for Kate Middleton extends to her parents and siblings too. According to a royal biographer, the Prince of Wales is not only “in love” with the Princess of Wales but also with her entire family.

The Prince of Wales doesn’t necessarily dread encounters with his in-laws, Michael and Carole Middleton. On the contrary, he seemingly enjoys their company.
“We’ve seen over the past few years that he gets on really well with them,” commentator Rachael Andrews told Ok! Magazine of Kate’s parents.
Indeed, William and Kate are known to take vacations with the Middleton family and spend holidays together.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has swung into theatres with aplomb, matching (if not beating) the excitement and love that the first movie, “Into the Spider-Verse,” garnered in 2018.
“Across the Spider-Verse” follows on from that first movie with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) now a successful Spider-Man in his own universe. But another encounter with Hailee Steinfeld‘s Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman leads to Miles being launched into the Spider-Verse wherein he encounters a society of Spider-People, led by Oscar Isaac‘s Miguel O’Hara, and a new foe — Spot (Jason Schwartzman). The film ends on an outrageous cliffhanger, teasing the conclusion of the series with next year’s “Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
For now, however, fans will have to be satisfied with this excellent addition to the Spider-Man canon, which currently stands at an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s critical consensus reading: “Just as visually dazzling and action-packed as its predecessor,...
