The Fall Guy writer Drew Pearce has addressed the controversy surrounding the joke about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in the action comedy film. Released earlier this month, the film has been receiving backlash for featuring a joke referring to the alleged alterations between the ex-couple, highlighted during the 2022 civil defamation trial.

However, despite the criticism surrounding the joke, Pearce has argued that the dialogue underscores Hannah Waddingham’s character, Gail, in the story, claiming that she is meant to say such things as she is depicted as anything but a decent human being.

[Editor’s Note: The following piece contains spoilers for the film “The Fall Guy”]
Master yarn-spinner and twist-lover Drew Pearce is setting the story straight on his film, “The Fall Guy”. The big screen adaptation of the ‘80 TV series was directed by former stuntman David Leitchb and stars the mega-watt talents of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Pearce wrote the screenplay and despite a huge marketing push, the film didn’t land its box office punch opening weekend. However, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pearce expressed his belief that the film will fight on and that — looking past the grand scale — it holds up as an accurate depiction of Hollywood messiness.
“I’m from England — well, Scotland, actually,” said Pearce. “But I never knew anyone in the business. So when I came here, everyone was like, ‘Oh no, that’s an apocryphal story. That stuff doesn’t happen.’ But my experience is that literally anything that is supposedly apocryphal is absolutely commonplace.

After the many industry-wide challenges of the last four years, The Fall Guy screenwriter Drew Pearce just wanted to make a feel-good Friday night movie, and based on various metrics, the consensus among critics and audiences is that he and the rest of his collaborators succeeded. In ten years, the social framing around the David Leitch-directed movie won’t be that it opened to $27.7 million instead of a projected $30 million. Rather, the impression of a good action romcom will remain above all.
Pearce is no stranger to IP-driven films, as he’s officially written for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3, the fifth Mission: Impossible film, Rogue Nation, as well as the Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. That also doesn’t include all the cups of coffee he’s had with other franchises in an uncredited capacity. So, compared to the aforementioned IP, the assumption is that The Fall Guy,...

Stunt work is all about selling an illusion. When the medium of cinema was first invented, it was initially marketed and thought of as something akin to a sideshow attraction, a wondrous magic trick where a series of pictures put next to each other and illuminated in rapid succession gave the illusion of movement. After this initial novelty gave way to artists utilizing the medium to tell stories, the craftspeople making movies realized that the concept of illusion extended to every aspect of filmmaking.
Where theatre was traditionally bound to a stage or perhaps a circus tent, the movies could expand the canvas of what could be done physically — if cameras could capture it, it could be performed. It's no surprise, then, that films saw people like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and others push the boundaries of physicality and feats of derring-do in the cinema.

Ostensibly a big-screen reboot of the 1980s television series of the same name, “The Fall Guy” is actually director and former stunt performer David Leitch’s love letter to both his wife, producer Kelly McCormick, and the undersung art of stunt work — only not always in that order.
Working closely with screenwriter and executive producer Drew Pearce, who previously scripted his “Fast and the Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” Leitch creates a clearinghouse of gobsmacking stunts (some truly record-breaking) while chronicling the tumultuous relationship between veteran stunt man Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and first-time director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). It’s quick-witted (and quick-footed) fun that bridges multiple generations of Hollywood moviemaking, melding together rom-coms and bombastic action into one blockbuster package.
Since making his screenwriting debut on Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3,” Pearce has developed an aptitude for conceiving stories that maintain a singular yet cohesive tonal balance.

Said to be a mix of Top Gun and Back To The Future, T-Minus will be an expensive-sounding action thriller based on a Philip K Dick short story. Michael B Jordan will co-produce.
Michael B Jordan, who’s currently working with Ryan Coogler on his currently untitled horror movie, now has another major project in the works. Called T-Minus, it’ll be produced by Jordan through his company, Outlier Society, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.
The script will be co-written by Drew Pearce, who wrote the upcoming The Fall Guy, and Nick Cuse, writer of TV’s Watchmen and Masters Of The Air.
What’s really intriguing about T-Minus – for this writer at least – is that it’s based on a Philip K Dick short story, A Little Something For Us Tempunauts.
First published in 1974, it’s about three time travellers (the Tempunauts of the title) whose mission to...

Exclusive: Outlier Society is developing the Amazon MGM Studios action thriller movie, T-Minus, which is being co-scripted by Fall Guy‘s Drew Pearce and Watchmen and Station Eleven scribe Nick Cuse.
Outlier Society’s Michael B. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo will produce with Pearce who is producing via his Point of No Return Films and Isa Dick Hackett via Electric Shepherd Productions.
Pearce
The project was initially developed by Pearce’s banner Point of No Return Films. Outlier Society’s Elizabeth Raposo heard the pitch—said to be an action-thriller along the lines of “Top Gun meets Back to the Future, with a Philip K. Dick twist”—and saw the potential for it to be the perfect Outlier project: an elevated piece with major tentpole potential.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, T-Minus will be adapted from the Philip K. Dick sci-fi 1974 short story A Little Something for Us Tempunauts.

During the last decade, much has been discussed about the stunt department and how the fearless, talented individuals who work in this area deserve more recognition in the film industry. From various movements to creating the respective category in awards ceremonies – unfortunately, the Oscars remain stubborn – to an unmistakable shift in the action genre – nowadays, it’s almost mandatory for an action flick to have an oner – stuntmen and stuntwomen have been increasingly valued with each passing year, so it would be expected that a movie paid them the proper tribute. With one of the most influential voices from the stunt world at the helm, David Leitch (Deadpool 2), The Fall Guy is a true love letter to a unit often overlooked by the general audience. In a mix of mystery, love, and action, Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), a stunt double, returns to work after an incident that almost ended his career.

There are innumerable tales of films in Tinseltown that were never finished due to a variety of reasons. But among the most strange and tragic cases is the follow-up to the classic Russell Crowe 1997 flick, L.A. Confidential, helmed by Curtis Hanson.
For those unfamiliar, this Warner Bros. film, which starred Crowe, Kevin Spacey, and Guy Pearce, was one of the greatest neo-noir crime works of the 1990s. Hanson and co-writer Brian Helgeland even shared the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for it. Also, the $126.2 million flick received rave reviews from critics as well as audiences, and fans were excited about a potential sequel.

Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are the Barbenheimer comedy duo we didn’t know we’ve been waiting for in The Fall Guy. Trailer number two shows off more of the chemistry between Gosling and Blunt while also delivering more action, more humor, and enough shirtless Gosling scenes to keep audiences satiated until the film’s theatrical release on May 3, 2024.
Joining Gosling and Blunt in the action comedy are Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train), Winston Duke (Black Panther franchise), and Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
Drew Pearce (Hobbs & Shaw) wrote the screenplay, stuntman David Leitch directed, with Leitch, Gosling, Kelly McCormick, and Guymon Casady produced. Executive producers include Pearce, Geoff Shaevitz, and the creator of the original Fall Guy television series, Glen A. Larson.

Buckle up because Universal Pictures has released a brand new trailer for "The Fall Guy." With a pair of huge stars in Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") and Emily Blunt ("Oppenheimer) at its center — both of whom are coming off of Oscars nominations for their work on two of 2023's biggest movies — this flick has summer blockbuster written all over it. A reboot of largely forgotten IP, a director who knows his way around action, and a couple of very charming stars? It's all here. Check out the trailer for yourself above.
Lots of action and lots of comedy at play here. David Leitch, whose previous credits include "Bullet Train" and "Deadpool 2," seems to be very much at home with the material, especially since he was a stuntman before becoming an A-list director. It looks, in a word, fun. That's because, for my money, it is a great deal of fun.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert premiered to a rapturous, midnight-screening reception at Cannes on May 15, 1994. The tart, feel-good comedy follows a trio of Sydney drag queens — Terrence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce — who travel by bus (that’s Priscilla) to a gig in the Outback, finding their way into hijinks and eye-popping outfits along the way. The film became a crossover sensation and even won an Oscar for its costumes (this despite having a costume budget of approximately $5,000). Its writer-director Stephan Elliott joins THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast this week to reveal all about this making of the comedy classic on the cusp of its 30th birthday. Here are five facinating takeaways from the episode:

Plot: A man, Fallon (Alex Pettyfer) roams the land as a creature of the night as he comes to terms with tragic loss of his family at the hands of a brutal demagogue, Reynolds (Guy Pearce).
Review: “The Sun Never Sets On Evil” may just be the most generic tagline for a vampire film possible. So I understand if you, like myself, are trepidatious when it comes to Sunrise. The basic vampire formula has been used time and time again but I always appreciate it when someone has an interesting new vision. On the surface, this is a simple story of a vampire helping a family get justice. But it’s so much more than that. I’ve always believed that it doesn’t matter how generic the story is, so long as it executes those ideas. And Sunrise provides a beautiful tragedy with some wonderful performances.

Sunrise Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Crystal Yu, William Gao, Kurt Yaeger, Olwen Fouéré, Guy Pearce
Director: Andrew Baird
Sunrise Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – Lionsgate Movies / YouTube )
What’s Good: Guy Pearce’s sharp performance as the detestable Joe Reynolds stands out, capturing the essence of a villain with racist ideologies and a sense of entitlement. The film occasionally succeeds in capturing the gritty essence reminiscent of top-tier vampire films, exploring the terrifying aspects of racism and violence.
What’s Bad: “Sunrise” grapples with generic dialogue, a lack of character depth, and an inconsistent exploration of its intriguing concepts. The film’s attempt to fuse a vampire story with themes of American racism feels awkward and lacks nuance. The narrative meanders through various genres, resulting in a slow and disorganized amalgamation of ideas.

John Sauer, Donald Trump‘s lead lawyer in his federal election fraud case, declared that presidential immunity would allow a U.S. president to order Seal Team Six to assassinate a political rival without having to face criminal prosecution.
Sauer made the wild claim for executive immunity at a hearing at a federal appeals court on January 9.
When delivering his statement, he said that only if a president has been impeached and Congress has removed him from office, only then could they be criminally prosecuted.
According to Sauer, this means that Trump is immune from criminal prosecution.
“Could a president who ordered Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival, and is not impeached, would he be subject to criminal prosecution?” one judge asked Sauer.
“If he were impeached and convicted first… there is a political process that would have to occur,” Sauer replied.

Update: Former President Trump made remarks after Tuesday morning’s D.C. Circuit hearing on presidential immunity.
But with less than a week before the Iowa caucuses, he seized on the attention of the moment to get in digs at President Joe Biden who, if polls are correct, he likely will face in the November election.
“They’re losing in almost every demographic,” Trump said. “Numbers came out today that are mind boggling if you happen to be Joe Biden.” He countered by claiming that Joe Biden was a “threat to democracy” by claiming his prosecution was politically motivated, even though there is not evidence that the president ordered Trump’s indictment.
Fox News carried Trump’s remarks, even though it did not carry on air the live audio of the hearing itself. CNN carried a portion of Trump’s remarks before going to a fact check and commentary. MSNBC...

Seven months have gone by since we heard that The Shrouds, the latest thriller from legendary director David Cronenberg, had wrapped production. Shane Black's 2013 film "Iron Man 3" (or "Iron Man Three" as it is titled on-screen) is handily one of the best films in the long-running and now-pretty-much-dead Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is a clever, witty film that forces Tony Stark to solve a mystery and face off against bad guys without a fully functioning Iron Man suit. It displayed how capable Stark was as a wise human being as opposed to a mere superhuman. The end of the trilogy also brought the "Iron Man" story to an effective conclusion. We'll simply have to ignore that Iron Man appeared in other films after it.
Additionally, Black invented a clever twist with the film's villain. In the original Iron Man comics, the hero frequently faced off against a nemesis called the Mandarin, a racist Fu-Manchu-like caricature — armed with ten magical rings — born of pulp cliches of the 1960s. "Iron Man 3...

Guy Pearce has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.
The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).
“Inside” is being produced by Marian Macgowan for Macgowan Films and Kate Glover for Never Sleep Pictures, with Thomas M. Wright...

Since The Asylum doesn’t have something to release at the moment, Full Moon Pictures has graciously stepped up and given us Bad CGI Gator. With a self-referential title designed to deflect criticism of its shortcomings, I really can’t say I was expecting much, and maybe because I had such low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised.
Somewhere in Georgia, a group of friends, Sam, Hope, Chad, Sarah, Pearce and Paisley are planning a Spring Break blowout.
Those plans include tossing their school laptops into the lake for a video they hope will go viral. Instead, it somehow transforms a tiny alligator into a huge, hungry beast. Actor Guy Pearce once teamed up with movie maker Christopher Nolan for their film Memento. The partnership was a learning experience for both, as Pearce showed Nolan something important when it came to collaborating with actors.

Nolan hadn’t worked with too many mainstream actors before Memento. His debut feature, Following, was a low-budget project that consisted of some actors who Nolan knew personally. Memento saw the filmmaker working alongside big names in Hollywood for the first time like Carrie-Anne Moss and Pearce. Despite being a still somewhat unproven director back then, Pearce was more than eager to star in Nolan’s Memento. So much so that he asked the director personally if he could be a part of the film.

“The Fall Guy” is now crash landing in theaters on May 3, 2024, after “Deadpool 3” vacated the release slot amid the work stoppage caused by the recently ended SAG-AFTRA strike.
David Leitch’s action thriller, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, was originally set to release on March 1, 2024. Based on Glen A. Larson’s 1980s television series of the same name, the film stars Gosling as Colt, a stuntman on the hunt for a missing movie star he once doubled for. Blunt stars as Gosling’s director and ex-girlfriend Jody Moreno, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Awol star Tom Ryder.
Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Winston Duke (“Black Panther”), Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) and Teresa Palmer (“A Discovery of Witches”) round out the cast.
Disney previously announced that several films have been delayed due to the actors strike, including “Deadpool 3,” Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” “Mufasa: The Lion King” and its “Blade” reboot.

When Summit Entertainment brought Christopher Nolan’s Memento to the American Film Market in 2000, the British- born director was still a relative unknown. The screenplay he wrote for his second feature proved puzzling as it wove together two timelines, one in reverse chronological order, to tell the story of a man with short- term memory loss trying to piece together the truth behind his wife’s murder.
But producer Aaron Ryder, calling it “perhaps the most innovative script I had ever seen,” brought it to Newmarket Films, which agreed to finance the project on a budget that was variously reported as $4.5 million to $9 million. When Newmarket failed to interest an American distributor, the company decided to release it itself domestically, with Summit coming aboard to handle international sales.

After a world premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and its North American premiere over the weekend at the Hamptons International Film Festival, Noah Pritzker’s (Quitters) second film goes for a mix of Woody Allen, John Cassavetes, Paul Mazursky, Noah Baumbach and other white male filmmakers, past and present, who enjoy basking in the midlife marital crisis in which many guys find themselves trapped. While not on the level of those acclaimed filmmakers, in this case, Pritzker manages to cast his net wider into an early-, mid-, and late-life crisis over three generations of the men in the Pearce clan.
The result is an engaging indie exercise that’s for sale to any distributor who finds promise in a premise that might be a tough sell for mainstream buyers despite a game cast that lifts it up a notch or two. Art houses would seem to be its theatrical future,...

Perhaps deciding that the relationship tribulations of white, coastal-American men of medium-to-high class-privilege levels — which were well-served on the big screen in previous decades — have been rather overlooked of late, writer-director Noah Pritzker goes back to the well of male midlife neurosis for his sophomore feature and dredges up not quite enough to fill up one amiable indie dramedy. Powered largely by the affability of Griffin Dunne playing a reluctant pending-divorcé whose aging father has recently left his aging mother and whose adult son is having woman troubles of his own, “Ex-Husbands” which world-premieres at the San Sebastian Film Festival, is likable enough in intention, but flounders en route to its destination. Not unlike its befuddled protagonists, who can’t seem to translate meaning well into doing well.
