When Los Angeles voters head to the polls March 5 and again in the November general election, President Biden won’t have to sweat the results here and across the state. Nearly twice as many Californians are registered Democrat as they are Republican. In 2020, 71 percent of L.A. County voters picked Biden.
But Los Angeles remains popular for Democrats for reasons beyond ballot counting — it’s a fountain of campaign cash, much of it spouting from the entertainment industry. Consider that clutch of December fundraisers where co-hosts and attendees included such glossy names as Steven Spielberg, Shonda Rhimes, Jon Hamm and Barbra Streisand. The events may have taken place amid some grumbling over lagging poll numbers and questions about whether the octogenarian commander-in-chief can woo young voters, but ultimately the wallets opened wide. Media reports put the take from the soirees at about $15 million, a hefty part of the $97 million the campaign on Jan.

Networks are heavily promoting their night of Iowa caucus coverage, with reporters fanned out across the state and, throughout the day on Monday, anchors doing their best to stir up excitement in the waiting game before voting actually begins.
But as large as the investment is for broadcast and cable networks, the coverage is facing heavy competition on the night of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Fox has the Emmys, and ABC has what is likely to draw the biggest audience, the NFL playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Broadcast networks are sticking to their regular schedules with the possibility of news updates, leaving the ongoing coverage to their streaming and cable channels.

Update: Joe Biden’s reelection campaign raised almost $100 million in the most recent quarter, helped in part by a huge haul during a Los Angeles fundraising swing in December.
The campaign said that it raised more than $97 million for the campaign and the Democratic party during the October to December time frame. That exceeds the amount raised in the second and third quarters of 2023, when around $72 million was raised in each of those time frames.
The Biden campaign also said that it had $117 million in cash on hand, the highest by any Democratic candidate at this point in the cycle.

As the nation’s ideological fight reaches book shelves, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation on Monday that would cut off state funding for Illinois public libraries that restrict or ban books.
Pritzker called the bill, which takes effect on Jan. 1, 2024, the first of its kind. The legislation arrives as conservatives across the nation push to restrict or outright ban texts discussing race and L.G.B.T.Q. issues. An intense storm caused the roof to collapse Friday night (March 31st) at the Apollo Theater in Belvidere, Illinois, where Morbid Angel were set to play along with Revocation, Skeletal Remains, and Crypta. One person has been reported dead, with at least another 28 injured.
The collapse came roughly 30 minutes into the metal concert, right after a tornado warning was issued for the area. Approximately 260 people were inside the sold-out 1,500 capacity venue at the time of the incident. California Gov. Gavin Newsom this week made what could either be considered a bold pledge or a shameless grandstand: He announced that the state was reevaluating the planned renewal of a contract with Walgreens, after the pharmacy chain assured 20 Republican attorneys general that it would not dispense Mifepristone in their states, including some states where abortion remains legal.
“California will not stand by as corporations cave to extremists and cut off critical access to reproductive care and freedom,” the California governor said in a statement. Walgreens had received about $54 million...

When it comes to any entertainment industry production, whether it’s a tentpole film or an independent commercial, creative choices must vie against the ever-important bottom line. Working in a state with tax incentive programs means productions can have the best of both worlds.
In Illinois, Gov. J.B. Pritzker just signed a 10-year extension for the state’s film-friendly tax incentive program, which guarantees productions 30% back on eligible expenses through Jan. 1, 2033. The credit was recently expanded to include eligibility for nine key positions for non-residents: director, writer, Dp, production designer, costume designer, production accountant, visual-effects supervisor, editor and composer.
Peter Hawley, deputy director of the Illinois Film Office, says applying for and receiving the incentives is an easy process with “plenty to go around” since there’s no cap on the state’s limits and how many productions may be approved.

Independent films dominated the latest round of productions granted tax credits to shoot in the state.
Of 24 movies selected to participate in California’s Film & TV tax credit program, only three are studio projects, the state’s film office said Monday. They’re helmed by Lionsgate ($21.1 million), MGM ($13.8 million) and Disney ($11.3 million).
Netflix and Warner Bros. Pictures, which have led the way in the previous four allotment of credits over the last two years, have no to titles on the list of films getting tax breaks for filming in California.
Michael Jackson biopic Michael headlines the three studio titles that were conditionally granted incentives. The production is projected to generate more in-state spending than any other movie in the film office’s 14-year history, with $120.1 million in qualified spending. (Defined as wages to below-the-line workers and payments to in-state vendors.) It was given $21.1 million in credits.
MGM was also granted credits for Thomas Crown Affair.

New York is looking to increase the cap on tax credits the state gives to the film and TV industry from 420 million to 700 million and raise the incentive to 30 percent, according to the 2023 state budget proposed by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday.
The changes, which would run through 2034, are aimed at luring productions back from jurisdictions that left the state when it lowered its credit to 25 percent in 2020. Since then, states have turned to offering increasingly competitive incentives as film and TV production spending reached record highs. The proposal includes a 5 percent bump for TV series that relocate to New York, among other major revisions.
If the budget passes the legislature, it would also make above-the-line wage costs eligible for tax breaks for the first time, with certain restrictions. The credit would be capped at 500,000 per individual and limit above-the-line tax incentives to 40 percent of other qualified production expenses.
The proposed change follows Illinois Gov.

Whoopi Goldberg didn’t have any kind words for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday morning, after it was revealed that he used taxpayer money to send two planes full of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. According to the host of “The View,” it was a “nasty” move made by a “bonehead” — and a hypocritical one at that.
The situation led the Hot Topics discussion on Thursday’s show, with Whoopi offering her thoughts before opening the question to the table. To start, she cited the Statue of Liberty.

President Joe Biden today gave a speech marking the signing of a gun safety bill passed in the aftermath of recent mass shootings.
But even as lawmakers, gun reform advocates and victims’ families gathered on the South Law ceremony said that the new legislation would be meaningful, some also said it falls short of laws that were in place in the past, like an assault weapons ban, or even a ban on purchases of those firearms for those under 21. And some said it more loudly than others.
Biden’s speech was interrupted by Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin was killed in the 2018 Parkland, Fl shootings. Oliver could be heard shouting, “I have been trying to tell you this, for years,” and Biden then said, “Let him talk. Chicago – The Oscars are this upcoming Sunday, March 27th, and one of the great performances of the year – nominated for Best Actress – is Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” The producer of the film is Gigi Pritzker.

“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is remarkable because of Chastain, who portrays the infamous televangelist from college age to advanced middle age (with the use of prosthetics). The film is a balanced and nuanced story of Tammy Faye, making significant commentary on the state of America and religion during her reign of influence. The ending of the film is an artistic use of cinema – by director Michael Sholwalter – and Jessica Chastain simply kills it.

After an extraordinary day of violence and political discord in the nation’s capital, at least two governors and a growing list of civic leaders are calling for Donald Trump’s immediate removal from office even though the President only has two weeks left to serve after he failed to win reelection.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Democrat of Illinois, and Gov. Phil Scott, Republican from Vermont, issued public statements calling for Trump’s ouster as a matter of public safety. Some have called for immediate impeachment proceedings while others suggest invoking the emergency protections of the 25th amendment.
“There is no question in my mind that his efforts to encourage a coup represent high treason to this democracy, our Constitution and all Americans. He poses a danger to our nation,” Pritzker said in a statement. “This violence is the natural conclusion of Donald Trump’s efforts to unleash the forces of hate and divide our nation.

He poses a danger to our nation,” Pritzker said in a statement. “This violence is the natural conclusion of Donald Trump’s efforts to unleash the forces of hate and divide our nation.

BET has announced a new original documentary, “Smoke: Marijuana + Black America,” executive-produced and narrated by Nas. The two-hour film will provide a closeup look at marijuana culture and its impact on both American society and especially the Black community. It’s set to air on Nov. 18.
“The world has finally begun opening up to the cannabis industry the way I feel it should have years ago,” says Nasir “Nas” Jones. “Even still, hate exists in this business for black people, and that is something that sickens me and should be recognized for its blatant evil. The people that have been locked up for marijuana should not only be freed but receive restitution for the damage done to them by outdated laws. It’s important to spread awareness on this, and that’s why everyone needs to make sure they tune in and watch the documentary ‘Smoke!’”

President Trump pushed governors to use more aggressive tactics against protesters, according to leaked audio of Monday video teleconference call.
Several reports quoted the president telling the governors that they are “weak” and “not doing enough” to quell demonstrations. Trump also said that the governors “were a laughingstock all over the world.”
“You’re making a mistake because you’re making yourselves look like fools,” the president told the governors while urging them “dominate” the protesters.
“You have to dominate. If you don’t dominate, you’re wasting your time.

The day before Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker issued a stay-at-home order over the coronavirus, Reckless Records buyer Matt Jencik felt anxious. Over the previous week, Jencik’s chain of three Chicago music stores, which employ about 40 people, had been playing chicken with the inevitable: closing their doors. But Jencik was becoming increasingly worried about his customers and employees. “I would wash my hands every 10 minutes,” he says. “Every time we rang someone up, I would have to say, ‘Go wash your hands.’ It was getting to the point where I was just like,...

Illinois is joining California and New York in issuing stay-at-home orders, the latest attempt to contain the spread of coronavirus by asking non-essential workers to remain at their residences.
“To avoid the loss of potentially tens of thousands of lives, we must enact an immediate stay at home order for all in Illinois,” said Governor J.B. Pritzker, adding that “left unchecked, cases in Illinois will rise rapidly.”
The restrictions will start on Saturday evening, and it will extend through April 7.
Residents will still be able to leave their homes for essential services, as well as to go out and do activities like hiking and running. A set of sectors, including agriculture and media, will...

Washington — President Trump’s order restricting travel back to the United States to slow the spread of the new coronavirus has led to chaotic scenes and dangerous conditions at several major airports. Disturbing new photos show hundreds of returning travelers crammed together at Chicago’s O’Hare airport and Dallas-Fort Worth airport as they wait to go through customs, undergo health screenings, and reenter the country. In Chicago, returning international travelers reportedly waited for hours to retrieve their baggage and go through customs and health checks.

The Illinois Senate approved a bill legalizing marijuana on Wednesday — a major step toward becoming the 11th U.S. state allowing recreational pot use. The measure, which passed in a 38-to-17 vote, now needs House approval by the Friday deadline before heading to the desk of Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who helped announce the bill with other lawmakers in early May.
